Immigration<br />
A contemporary plague<br />
On the occasion of the<br />
recent migration waves from<br />
countries that are currently at<br />
war and the tragic events that<br />
raised global awareness of the<br />
wretched conditions under<br />
which these uprooted people<br />
travel, I would like us to take a<br />
moment and try to put ourselves<br />
in their shoes.<br />
Nowadays, although<br />
major progress has been made<br />
in almost every aspect of our<br />
world, there are still a lot of<br />
things that the humanity cannot<br />
be proud of. Such a thing is<br />
that many people are forced to<br />
flee their countries<br />
and immigrate, facing<br />
a lot of unfavorable<br />
situations in<br />
order to find decent<br />
living conditions<br />
for themselves<br />
and their<br />
families.<br />
Trying to avoid<br />
wars or other adversities (such<br />
as Islam extremists) encountered<br />
in their countries, immigrants<br />
are desperately trying to<br />
find a way to leave their home<br />
seeking for a brighter future.<br />
Some people, though, are<br />
benefitted by that exact situation<br />
and grab the opportunity<br />
to get wealthier. Smugglers<br />
take advantage of these poor<br />
people and the little hope they<br />
have left by illegally providing<br />
them with tickets to other<br />
countries for extravagant<br />
amounts of money.<br />
What actually happens<br />
is that, after buying<br />
their ticket, people<br />
are stacked into<br />
wretched and adrift<br />
boats , spend many days<br />
in them and end up either<br />
chased by others<br />
countries’ governments<br />
or drowned helpless in<br />
the middle of the Mediterranean<br />
sea.<br />
