CITY Summer Camp 2014 CITY summer Leadership Camp is a leadership development camp targeted at teenagers in the society. The goal of the camp is centered on imbibing leadership and positive values and building sustainable capacity in the lives of teenagers. The 2014 camp is the third edition of CITY Summer Camp and the theme of the camp was “The Leadership Revival II”. Registration for 2014 edition of the camp included applicants from Lagos, Oyo, Ogun and Calabar. Selection was based on merit and students from both private and state owned institutions were duly represented. The participants were split into 8 different squads and usually worked in teams during camp activities with two volunteers providing guidance as squad leaders. The camp buddy system that allocated a volunteer to every four (4) campers also helped to ensure that there was maximum impact for every participant. The summer camp featured trainings in Leadership, Entrepreneurship, Building healthy relationship. There were also intellectually stimulating competitions, such as; case challenge, Speak for change and the Spelling Bee. The career fair was a high point for the participants. It featured various practicing specialists in engineering, fashion design, Law, Social entrepreneurship and many more. The participants were also exposed to hands on workshops in tye and dye, bag making, bead making, baking, make-up, music/song writing among others. Another highlight was the movie night which featured the inspiring story of Gabby Douglas, the first African American woman in Olympic history to become the individual all-around champion at age 16. It was indeed a huge motivation for the teenagers and a powerful example of what can be achieved with hard work and determination. The Camp successfully concluded with no major physical incidents and the participants returning safely to their respective homes. 6
The Leadership Revival The leadership revival is all about making the quest for leadership development commonplace. It is activating leaders everywhere. It is helping people discover, develop and deploy the leader in them. It is making the platforms and resources for leadership development available for every teen and youth in Africa. Inside every individual is a leader, just as inside every seed is a tree. If leadership is contribution, service, accepting responsibility, delivering change, motivating participation, rallying people around a compelling vision, solving problems… Then can’t we raise people to think and act in that way? Leaders are the most important variables in the equation for change and development. Africa’s greatest need remains true leadership. We can help individuals to discover and appreciate their uniqueness (gifts, talents, treasures); We can inspire them to define and develop their passions; We can shape their perspective towards service, contribution, and accepting responsibility; We can guide their orientation towards the discipline of leadership; We can encourage and guide them to develop character; We can coach them in the other techniques and fine details about leadership. In essence we can develop leaders! 7
