Švejk D-2, Praha 1, Široká 20, MStaroměstská, tel.
(+420) 224 81 39 64. Someone spent some money (and
not much by the look of it) to make a new restaurant look
old - basically what a beer hall would look like in the Czech
pavilion at the World Expo. That said, Švejk restaurants are
always good for traditional food like duck, pork and wild boar
served with dumplings, cabbage and a local beer. QOpen
11:00 - 23:00. (100 - 300Kč). A
Tlustá kachna D-2, Praha 1, Široká 4, MStaroměstská,
tel. (+420) 224 81 96 68, www.tlustakachna.cz. Imaginative
Czech cuisine can be done; and the Fat Duck is doing
it. Pork or duck with cabbage and dumplings isn't new or
exotic; but done right it is delicious, and it's done right here.
The must order though is the creamy garlic soup. Czech wine
and beer take care of the drinks. Two additional things stand
out; excellent service and big portions. Stop by. QOpen
11:00 - 24:00. 139-390kč.
U Maltézských rytířů B-2, Praha 1, Prokopská 10,
MMalostranská, tel. (+420) 257 53 00 75, www.
umaltezskychrytiru.com. This historical restaurant
called ‘At the Maltese Cross' is housed in a 14th century
building called ‘at the black horse' where the entrance
does not prepare you for the maze of tiny rooms below.
The international menu is small but inspired with excellent
Chateaubriand for two and traditional Czech dishes. Fish
and meat is predominantly organic (bio) and the ambience
is understated and secluded. QOpen 13:00 - 23:00.
(300 - 600Kč). AI
U Modré růže E-4, Praha 1, Rytířská 16, MMůstek,
tel. (+420) 224 22 58 73, www.umodreruze.cz. The
Blue Rose serves refined Czech dishes in an antique setting
to make you feel like a lord or lady. The candle-lit 15th
century brick cellar is an ideal place for a romantic dinner
with your sweetheart. QOpen 11:30 - 23:30. (350 - 750Kč).
AEGP
U Mušketýra I-5, Praha 1, Mezibranská 13, tel. (+420)
296 22 00 01, www.musketyr.com. A labyrinthine cellar
space (it can seat up to 200 diners) with eclectic furniture
and good service provides excellent, well-priced Czech
and international dishes. Svíčková and gulaš - topped with
lashes of freshly grated horseradish - particularly recommended.
Krušovice Mušketýr beer for 18Kč. Lovely... QOpen
10:00 - 24:00, Sat 11:00 - 24:00, Sun 11:00 - 23:00. (95
the Cobbler has seen some famous people, like the Spanish
Queen and the Pitt-Jolie couple. Mere mortals head there for
the Czech specialities like Svíčková Stroganoff and Staročeská
bašta, knedlík, zelí (Bohemian plate with dumplings and cabbage.)
The beautiful dining room, so close to Prague Castle,
make this a good choice for an elegant Prague night out. Q
26, MStaroměstské, tel. (+420) 224 22 52 93, www.
ukonvice.cz. Moderately priced traditional Czech dishes in a
fabulous, many roomed, authentically decorated cellar space
served up by a slew of avid waiters makes this a great Old
Town getaway. Use the steps descending from beside the
Grand Café Praha's terrace as the entrance from Melantrichova
is a tad stale. The copper vats hold Pilsner Urquell, and
here any hope of a cheap session goes up the chimney as a
half litre is 80Kč. QOpen 11:00 - 24:00. (150 - 295Kč). A
French
Brasserie La Provence E-3, Praha 1, Štupartská 9,
MNám. Republiky, tel. (+420) 296 82 61 55, www.
kampagroup.com. The people that brought you Kampa
Park went to great lengths to create a genuine brasserie
in the heart of Prague. The result is a ‘best of' amalgam of
several Parisian brasseries; a stunning Belle Epoque room
with large windows. Specialising in delicious fresh seafood
(anything from oysters to lobster), game like rabbit in tarragon
sauce and vegetarian onion quiche are also available. The
sommelier has selected several uncomplicated wines (that
can also be had by glass) that go wonderfully with the food.
www.celesterestaurant.cz. Newly opened on top of
the Dancing House (Tančící dům); excellent French cuisine and
fabulous city views are yours for the money. The contemporary
restaurant is set in an expansive space; complete with a summer
terrace. The cuisine is creative and solid; lots of seafood
and both the wine and dessert lists are substantial. There's an
accompanying bar on the ground floor. QOpen 12:00 - 14:30
70, www.francouzskarestaurace.cz. Superb French (and
some Czech) gourmet dishes from this restaurant’s award
winning chefs. Mussels, rabbit, foie gras and duck all make
delightful appearances in one of the world’s masterpieces
of art nouveau architecture (the Municipal House building
itself) and interior. Lunch specials and a concert package
lower prices somewhat, and try the Jazz Brunch on the first
Sunday of each month. Q Open 12:00 - 16:00 & 18:00 -
Pálffy Palác B-1, Praha 1, Valdštejnská 14, MMalostranská,
tel. (+420) 257 53 05 22, www.palffy.cz. The
ambience of this 100% antique, turn-of-the-century dining
room is shabbily aristocratic, and the clientele seem to feel
the need to keep up appearances. It is, on the other hand,
the perfect place to ask for the hand of your sweetheart. A
favourite weekend brunch treat, the excellent smoked salmon
and spinach pancakes are only surpassed by the stunning
views of the castle gardens. QOpen 11:00 - 23:00. (400 -
in Prague and the art nouveau design of this restaurant is
divinely matched by Chef Jan Mošna's inspired menues with
set meals for the undecided or choose from swordfish, turbot
or rabbit. Visit their famous jazz Sunday brunch (12:00 - 16:00,
U Malířů B-3, Praha 1, Maltézské nám. 11, MMalostranská,
tel. (+420) 257 53 03 18, www.umaliru.cz.
This is one of those restaurants that many acknowledge
is a must-do in Prague as it has the reputation of the best
French cuisine in the city. The pedigree is long, the restaurant
was given three stars by an otherwise difficult to please King
Rudolf II - in 1544, if you please. Go for the sumptuous décor
and the ambience of wealth. QOpen 11:00 - 23:00. (1,200 -
There seems to be a load of French restaurants
hanging about; but for a nice sampling and good prices; head to
Universal. Here you'll be treated to a near-perfect salmon tartar,
a creamy chicken dijonnaise (sauce on the side, thank you!) not to
mention filling salads, and of course delectable desserts. If you
are in the mood for brunch; you most likely won't find a fresher
more creative mid-day meal. Served Sundays from 11:00-14:00.
Greek
Kavala Prague 6, Charlese de Gaulla 5, MDejvická, tel.
(+420) 224 32 51 81, www.kavala-praha.cz. Following
an extensive reconstruction, Kavala joins and adds to the
emergence of Prague 6 as the location of some of Prague's
finest eating establishments (well, diplomats are a notorious
group of eaters and drinkers, so why not?). Good word-ofmouth
buzz and Greek chefs make this another authentic
haven for souvlaki, calamari and tender lamb lovers. QOpen
(+420) 222 540 400, taverna@kri-kri.cz, www.kri-kri.cz.
It's all Greek to them. From the food to the service, Kri-Kri is
about as authentic as you can get off the island. Be prepared
for a long evening and don't go in starving as the service isn't
the best. However, once your food arrives you'll be wallowing
in happiness over their stifado, shrimp saganaki and tzatziki.
Their Greek house wines are surprisingly cheap and good.
the most famous Greek restaurant in Prague. Excellent
Grecian starters, a haul of fresh seafood, and friendly, hard
working staff. Superb. And the garden here is one of the best
kept secrets in Prague and has a great playground to keep the
kids happy. QOpen 11:30 - 24:00. (200 - 500Kč). TAB
Manni Mini Praha 3, Seifertova 11, MHlavní nádraží, tel.
(+420) 222 51 16 60. From the people who run several oriental
oriented late night markets comes this small, functional but very
tasty Indian place to fill the gap in the market. Curries of every hue
and origin (tandoori, biryani, Punjabi, dopiaza, Madras, jalfrezi and
vindaloo of course) come in vegetarian, chicken, lamb and prawn
variations with basmati rice and a wide smile. Good not brilliant,
but oh, what a price. Wine for just 150Kč too. Oh, and they serve
and therefore whatever quibbles you have with it today, tomorrow
