The Art of Getting Money - CAPITAL
NOW you approach a lender for financial
help, the whole exercise starts by knowing what
your lender wants. A common way is to simply ask.
A better way is to ask a friend or business advisor.
For a business loan, the most common things are:
• Business financial statements
• Business tax returns
• Business Plan with budget or projection
• Personal financial statements
• Personal tax returns
Step two is to be ready to answer questions about your
business, and be ready to highlight your financial performance
both in the past and in the future. You will
be more impressive if you have carefully thought-out
answers, and have become familiar with your business
plan. Bring your accountant if you need help.
Be prepared to tell them why you need the money. “I just need
the money,” does not inspire confidence or the fact that you
have thought it through. In the previous edition we studied
a number of different purposes. Give them some detail.
“substance.” Avoid giving the impression of being
an over optimistic, “pie-in-the-sky” operator.
• Most start-up businesses don’t find a place for expensive
entertaining. Your lenders will be more interested in
knowing how their money is being used to grow your business.
• Do not depend on a bank to loan you
money to start a business. Most small businesses
are funded by personal savings.
• Make a shrewd appraisal to minimize your
risks and to limit losses to a predetermined limit.
• Your suppliers and vendors can be sources of financing.
For example, if you need an illuminated sign for your
store front, the company you contract with to make the sign
may provide financing so you can make monthly payments
rather than pay cash. (They want your business.) Examples:
o Longer payment terms
o Advertising and marketing assistance
o Furnishing or financing
of equipment, signs or inventory.
o Advertising and promotional programs
• Bartering, which is to trade by exchange one
commodity for another, can provide a source of financing.
For example your advertisements in the local
newspaper might be paid for by the bagels you make!
BIZFEM MAGAZINE
Propose a repayment plan. Examples of different structures
are:
• A line of credit, payable at your discretion
but subject to renewal annually by the bank
• Term loan payable monthly over a
number of years starting on a specific date
Most places have some flexibility. Potential lenders
appreciate that you are thinking about paying
them back instead of just getting the money.
Other tips to keep in mind:
• Needless to say, being well dressed and neat in appearance
at bank / lender meetings will reflect positively.
• Most lenders will want to see your business plan.
• Keep your lenders informed on the status
of your business: the good and the bad.
• If you are unable to make a loan payment
on time, call your lender in advance, advise
him/her of the problem and request the extension
you need. Explain the sources of repayment.
• Virtually all lenders will do a personal savings and
corporate credit check through ITC or other means. Be prepared
to discuss any prior credit issues/problems. The best
access to a lender is by a referral. Lending is a people business.
Have your attorney or friend introduce you to a lender.
• The first thing that will spook lenders or
investors is the fear you are “puff” rather than
“There may be
covenants”
After You Get the Money
Getting the money is only the first step. You should
strive to be a good customer so you can get cooperation
if you need help later. A good customer sticks to his/
her agreement. Make sure you understand the requirements
and perform to them as much as possible. In a
business relationship, lenders will ask for regular financial
statements, which you should produce on time.
There may be covenants. A covenant is a written agreement
in which you promise to meet specified obligations
such as submitting the agings of your accounts
receivable. The “agings” report will show the lenders
if your credit customers are paying on time or not.
Be proactive. Contact them if there is a problem. Be
sure to stay in touch even if nothing new is going on.
Get to the next highest level within the organization.
You have GREATNESS !
Life
Life caught you on the blind side and knocked you
off your feet. You expected something, but it did not
happen. You did not expect this challenge; however, it
came into your life. You worked hard and did not get
the outcome you wanted. No matter what your situation
may be, know this, the floor is no place for a winner.
Get up. Crawl if you must. Cry, scream or shout. But get
up! Lying down will not change a thing. Talking about
how close you were, will not bring it about. Complaining
will not put any money in the bank. Shake it off,
throw away the Kleenex and get your head right! We
all get the wind knocked out of us from time to time by
life. Don’t let it get the best of you! You are stronger
than you think you are. You have the right stuff. Don’t
take it personally. It is called life. Get up, get busy and
work your business. You have something special in you!!
Stop trying to change
other people
Stop trying to change the people you love and change
yourself! Stop trying to change people who take your
money but will not take your advice. You will only drain
your own mental, spiritual, emotional and financial reserves.
The truth is...people change when they are sick
and tired of being sick and tired or hit rock bottom.
Do not stop now!!
Continue to work on yourself and your dream. Do
not look for others to hold your heart, take your hand
or have your back. You are responsible for your own
life and for creating your own path. Commit to move
out of your own way. Stop procrastinating or waiting
for someone to rescue you. Be clear about who you
can count on and who you must count out. Make adjustments
and surround yourself with positive energy,
people and thoughts. Great things take time, effort and
sacrifice!! Keep looking up and moving forward with
the end in mind. You have something special within!
Be patient, continue to persist and move in the direction
of your dream. Many times a dream has a life of
its own. It will take you on a journey to build your
character, your confidence and your faith. Be patient!
Patience does not mean being inactive. It means positive
expectation and a knowing deep down in your heart
that you will be alright. Believe that things are going to
work out for you. Judge not according to appearances.
Be patient ~ even if you do not have a dime in the
bank, lost your job, or your money. Be patient. You
have the power in you to pull this out. Don’t judge
yourself based on what you do not have. What you
have is enough. Hold the vision. You have the power
in you to resurrect your dreams and make them become
a reality. Work on yourself. Believe in yourself
and in a power greater than yourself. Be patient and
keep moving forward. Things will work out for you.
Remember...You have something special.
You have GREATNESS within you!!
If you are dealing with addiction or irresponsible behavior
from grown adults ~ protect your wallet and your mind.
It does not mean you do not love them. Your attempts to
help may only delay what is inevitable. Allow them to
take the journey they have chosen for themselves. Choose
to let go of the guilt and be at peace. You may require
counseling or emotional support to stop being an enabler.
If necessary, give yourself some distance so that you can
stop being used or manipulated because they know that
you care and you love them. You have the right to enjoy
a guilt-free, happy and productive life. Commit yourself
to changing the only person you really can - YOU!!
The drive to succeed
in business
BIZFEM MAGAZINE
Being an entrepreneur is more than just being
able to start a business, it is more about having
the right attitude and drive to succeed in business.
Successful entrepreneurs have a similar way of thinking
and possess several key personal qualities that
make them successful in business. These successful
entrepreneurs are ambitious and have an inner drive to
succeed and grow their businesses rather than having
business degrees or technical knowledge in particular
fields. Good entrepreneurs have the following qualities:
• Inner drive to succeed – Entrepreneurs must
be driven to succeed and expand their business. They
must see the bigger picture and often be very ambitious.
• Strong self-belief – Entrepreneurs must
have a healthy opinion of themselves and often
have a strong and assertive personality.
• Search for new ideas and innovation
– All entrepreneurs must have a passionate
desire to do things better and to improve
their products offering or services offering.
• Openness to change – If something is
not working for them, they must simple change.
They must be up to date with the latest technology
or service techniques and must always be
ready to change if they see a new opportunity arise.
• Competitive by nature – Successful
entrepreneurs always strive on competition.
• Highly motivated and energetic – The
high standards and ambition of many entrepreneurs
demands that they have to be motivated.
• Accepting of constructive criticism – Innovative
entrepreneurs are often at the forefront of their
industry so they hear the words “it can’t be done”
quite a bit. They must readjust their path if the criticism
is constructive and useful to their overall plan.
True entrepreneurs are resource full, passionate and
driven to succeed and improve. They are pioneers and
must always be comfortably fighting on the frontline.
Small business (SMEs),
the way to grow economy
Everyone, the government, the private sector
and civil society all agree that small business
is the solution to job creation. There seem
therefore, to be a different opinion over how
small business should be developed to grow the
economy. More than twelve million people are
employed by small businesses in South Africa.
Entrepreneurship empowers citizens and is required
for any merging market to move forward and successfully
integrate into global economy. Government
and the private sector must constantly inspire
young people to embrace innovation and creativity;
this will lead to more entrepreneurs merging.
What is the status of entrepreneurs in our country?
– The government has set up a number of
small development agencies such as Khula Enterprise,
National Youth Development Agency,
Small Enterprise Development Agency and
many others to boost small business growth.
These agencies were established to offer alternative
financial assistance for small businesses because
of the problems experienced by emerging
entrepreneurs at banks. The Empowerment fund is
also taking strides in trying to bring a solution to
the funding problem for emerging entrepreneurs.
Information also comes out that suggest that it is
not only funding that is a challenge to small businesses,
but most importantly, it is information.
While the media try to give out more information
on small business development, and many agencies
publish that information on the internet, the fact is
that a lot of entrepreneurs are still in the dark, and
more so due to the fact that as vast of the information
is found online, a few entrepreneurs have
access to the internet especially the black community,
so that information does not reach them.
10 May/June 2015 www.bizfem.co.za

About 63 percent of the small businesses fail within the
first two years. Other reasons for the failure of small
businesses are the reasons for which people get into
business. For example as we come out of the resent
economic melt dawn, the economy shed a lot of jobs
forcing people to seek alternative means of income.
With few alternatives available, a number of people venture
into business without the skills or aptitude to do so.
The challenge is again with government to streamline
funding agencies into different sectors so
as to enable these agencies to develop products
which are tailor-made for the targeted sector.
This will make sure that merging entrepreneurs
will venture into businesses that the government
can support true tenders as demand will be exceeding
supply, thus the small businesses will prosper.
Motivation
BIZFEM MAGAZINE
Are you spending your time in other people’s
business? Is your energy and effort
spent minding other people’s concerns?
I am not referring here to gossiping, rumour mongering
or any such vice. I am referring to the thing
that makes thousands of people in this country get up
early in the morning, leave their families and homes
and make a mad dash through crazy traffic like it’s
the end of the world. That thing is work. More specifically,
it is employment. Whether in the formal
or informal sector, it is the dominant activity in our
lives throughout the world. It is a necessary evil for
most of us because deeper down we would rather not
be working for anyone else, but somehow we accept
that it is the only way to get by. Once a pay cheque arrives
at the end of the month we feel relieved, though
only for a little while, that we have our needs met.
By the 10th of the month the waiting starts all
over again. We have to endure the rest of the
month until the next paycheque. This is a reality
for most people around the world. We have
become slaves to our salaries. “Making a living”
is killing us instead of making our lives better.
Who are you working for?
When you go to work every day, whose purpose
are you fulfilling? It is the purpose of the company
or organization you are working for. You are
employed to help your organization achieve its objectives.
If someone else took over your position
they would still do the same thing you do in order
to achieve the organizations objective. If you
are working for an individual, you are still fulfilling
the objectives of that individual, so in both cases
you are still minding someone else’s business.
You are not what you do
However the situation gets more complex: many of
us have been led into believing that the organizations
purpose is our purpose. We whole- heartedly take up
the cause of the organization as our own. Our ideas
and thoughts slowly but surely come to be replaced by
those of our workplace. We become the perfect employees.
“You are not
what you do”
What’s wrong with that? Everything. You are not
what you do. Your work is not who you are. Unfortunately
our education system hasn’t helped in this
regard. It has trained us to become what we study. If
you study law you became a lawyer, auto mechanics
makes you a mechanic and cooking makes you a
cook. “The mistake in becoming what you study is
that too many people forget to mind their own business.
They spend their lives minding someone else’s
business and making that person rich.” Those are the
wise words of Robert Kiyosaki, author of Rich Dad
poor Dad.
Let’s Talk Business
ADVERTISING –
WHAT IT IS
Advertising is to call the public’s attention to
your business, usually for the purpose of selling
products or services through the use of various
forms of media such as print or broadcast notices.
The purpose of advertising is to:
• Make customers aware of your products and services
• Convince customers that your company’s
products or services are right for their needs
• Create a desire for your product or service
• Enhance the image of your company
• Announce new products or services
• Draw customers to your business
Your main focus as an entrepreneur is to make prospective
customers aware that your product or services
exists, draw their interest in what your product or
service can do for them, make them want to try your
product or services and let them take action by asking
for more information or actually buying the product.
Adapt like a
buffalo in your
business!
What determines the success of a business - is it
hard work or smart work, and can adaptability create
a competitive edge? Let’s learn from the buffalo.
Buffalo are extremely adaptable and can survive in any
terrain, from open grasslands to thick African bushes.
How adaptable is your business in a changing business
landscape? Does your business make use of the Kaizan
principle - expansion through continuous renewal by pursuing
new opportunities as the marketplace is reshaped?
Take optic fibre, for instance - a new technology that
reshaped the marketplace. It uses 5% of the energy that
copper uses and can carry up to 8 700 messages simultane
ously. Copper, traditionally used for communication
cables, can only carry 48 messages simultaneously.
Buffalo avoid the heat and graze in the cool hours of
the morning and even at night. This brings us to the
principle of economy of effort, or as some would
call it, working smart, not hard. While it is a virtue to
work hard, working hard without working smart can
consume unnecessary energy that could otherwise
have been applied more creatively in your business.
Smart businesses actively focus on opportunities
that require minimum input for maximum output.
Sometimes less is more. We tend to want to do too
much and do not differentiate between opportunities
in order to pursue the most profitable ones.
Businesses need to stop and think which opportunities
create the best returns on their sweat capital.
If buffalo are threatened they will approach the
source instead of waiting for the source to approach
them. The herd protects its members in
distress and brings the whole herd to the rescue –
even lions have been chased up trees by buffalo.
Buffalo have a reputation for even turning on their
pursuers, predator or human, to counterattack.
Learning from the buffalo, businesses should continuously
be aware of competitor activities and,
like the buffalo, move closer to the action to get
a clear impression of their competitors’ strategy.
The closer you study your competitors’ strategy,
the easier it will be for you to plan a counterattack.
In the face of a growing global economy, South
African businesses must also learn to think globally
while acting locally. More and more competitive
products will enter the South African
market and cannibalize their market share.
If the government, for instance, signs a trade
agreement with foreign countries, entrepreneurs
should make it their business to determine
whether the agreement will have an impact on
their industry and, if so, strategize accordingly.
Better the enemy you know than the
one you did not care to find out about!
RENEWABLE ENERGY
RENEWABLE ENERGY is energy which is
continuously being replenished by nature!!!
HOW A PHOTOVOLTAIC SOLAR
SYSTEM WORKS
The sun illuminates the solar
cells in the PV Array, which
convert the energy in the
sunlight into electricity. The
electricity goes into an inverter
and into the power lines to your
‣Parabolic (trough) mirrors can focus the
sun at 30 to 60 times its normal intensity
on a receiver pipe located along the focal
line of the trough.
‣Synthetic oil captures this heat as it
circulates through the pipe, reaching
temperatures as high as 750ºF. The hot oil
is pumped through a heat exchanger on
the power production side of the plant to
produce steam.
NEUTRON
BIZFEM MAGAZINE
‣Electricity is produced in a conventional
steam turbine/generator
‣The power cycle is completed with the
condensing of the steam through a
cooling tower and then pumping it back
through the heat exchanger connected to
the solar energy collection field.
