Group of volatile elements F, Cl, S
These elements show a loss in dependence of fusion temperature, precise temperature
setting required for high precision fusion.
Group of elements causing sticking in the mould Fe, Co, Cu, Cr
These elements change the viscosity of the melt depending on their concentrations.
This can only be eliminated by adding bromide or iodide salts.
This applies for: Fe > 40%, Co, Cu > 0.1, Cr > 0.5%
Minerals with carbon : continuous casting powder
Sulfi de ores : FeS, CuS, ZnS, MoS, PbS
Metal alloys : FeNiCo, FeSi, FeMn, FeMo, … FeXX
Organic compounds : Ca, Pb stearates
These materials have to be oxidized fi rst before normal fusion to avoid reaction
with platinum ware.
The Periodic Table of Fusion is also available as poster on request.

Drift monitors
After establishing a calibration on an X-ray fl uorescence instrument
everybody likes to use it as long as possible.
This wouldn’t be any problem if the instrument would not show any
changes in sensitivity over time. But it is the opposite.
The x-ray tube looses intensity and the detector looses sensivity
over time. Service works for example changing an x-ray tube or a
crystal might have an infl uence to the sensitivity as well.
To use an existing calibration over a long time the change in sensitivity
for an element has to be detected by a drift monitor and then used to
correct for it. Such samples are called drift monitors, monitor samples,
reference samples or monitor standards.
FLUXANA calibrations, installed in many customer laboratories,
contain a special selection of drift monitors to guarantee an excellent
long term stability.
These monitor samples were designed especially for the use in our
customer applications.
Driven by customers we produce monitor samples in our glass
production designed on the customer need.
Examples for FLUXANA monitor glasses:
FLX-C1, C3, Z1, Z2, Z3 Cement, raw materials cement industry, glass industry
Manual and electric hydraulic presses
The preparation of solid pellets requires a hydraulic press
and an appropriate die. Stable pellets can be prepared
from a loose powder, using an aluminium cap or binder
material.
Usual diameters for XRF are 32 and 40mm. Considering that
pressure is force per surface area it is recommended to use
at least 15 tons for 32mm and 25 tons for 40mm.
Pellet Dies 3.1.1
The Dies are designed for use with our Hydraulic Presses.
Halide disks for infrared analysis are usually produced with the smaller size dies.
The larger size dies are commonly used in briquetting samples for XRF and XRD
analysis and many other industrial applications.
All of the dies are equipped with nitrile O-ring seals and 2 pellets in between the sample is pressed.
There is a wide range of 440C hardened stainless steel Evacuable Pellet Dies,
used for compacting powdered samples into disks or briquettes.
Aluminium Cups
Aluminium cups are used to stabilize your sample from 2 sides.
However for a successful use the sample must show at least some binding properties.
Another advantage of this method is the possibility of labeling and sucking with autosamplers.
3 Solid Analysis
3.1.5 Binding additives for XRF analysis
Binding additives for XRF analysis
Not all samples can be pelletized using Aluminium cups. They may be unstable or the
aluminium cups effect the result. In such a case a binding material can be used.
The most common is Hoechstwax HWC, available as a loose powder.
Alternatively, a high performance “multimix” binder is available, in tablet form,
producing highly stable and durable pellets. It is important to mix the binder well
with the sample using a suitable mill. Contact us for information on appropriate
mills for your application.
Powders Wax Pellet
If you have only a small amount of sample material a stable pellet can be made by
using boric acid at the back of the sample. The boric acid is poured into the die first
and then the sample is added on top. During pressing the boric acid forms a
stable backing to the sample.
Wax is good for the preparation of reference samples or calibration standards.
Important is a good homogeneous mixture between wax and your sample.
Multimix is good for the preperation of cement, raw meal, clinker, sand, etc.
You just add 2-3 pellets before milling your sample and you will get a nice stable
dustfree pellet.
