COPENHAGUE
Design by /
Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec
Ever since the post-war years, Denmark has had a tradition of using
designer furniture and lighting in public institutions and facilities.
Either using furniture that was designed for the specific building
or furniture selected for its expressive impact and exquisite quality.
That is why we still see furniture from Danish design icons such as
Hans Wegner, Børge Mogensen and Arne Jacobsen in Danish
hospitals, schools and other public institutions.
We are proud to continue this legacy in the current project for the
interior design of the new buildings at the University of Copenhagen.
The custom-designed furniture had to meet high functional requirements
for stackability and cleaning while offering a warm and
welcoming feel. The sense of homeliness was a key priority for the
University of Copenhagen in the design of form and ambience,
and therefore we chose wood as the main material.
We had a strong wish to work with the French brothers, Ronan
and Erwan Bouroullec, who over the past decade have cemented their
position as two of the most skilled designers in the world. They have
an eminent capacity for combining originality with aesthetics in
products that have an eye on the future without throwing design
history overboard, and which are beautiful to behold. We went to Paris
to meet with the brothers and left with a promise that we would receive
a design proposal four months later. Two weeks later, we received the
proposal, and four weeks later, the first prototypes were ready.
It was amazing!
For a designer and a manufacturer, it is a gift to be allowed to
create site-specific furniture that engages in a direct dialogue with
the architecture. We are proud of the outcome.
COPENHAGUE CHAIR
Aesthetically, the COPENHAGUE Chair is a synthesis of contrasts between
hard and soft. Edgy and rounded. Minimalist and decorative. The repetition
of legs in triangle formations when it is stacked forms a sculpture itself
as a professional and aesthetic gimmick from RONAN and ERWan Bouroullec.
The COPENHAGUE Chair is also available in an upholstered version
where the seat and back are upholstered as a single section – in select
quality textiles.
Flow in a row. The COPENHAGUE Chair is able to transform
into straight rows of conference seats with an added click-system
that keeps the chairs in line.
CPH Chair
Keeping it simple cOPENHAGUE chair is 2 x 2 legs and TWO moulded plywood
shells. The sharply bent PLYWOOD is made of multiple sheets of fine veneer
layered With cheesecloth. This combination makes the shell stronger
than normal and Gives the chair a pleasant springiness that is essential
in a backrest, and which Gives a nod to bauhaus and the first
cantilever chairs.
adjusted: testing proportions, strength and durability.
COPENHAGUE BARSTOOL
CPH Barstool
The barstool merged seamlessly with the Copenhague collection.
Here, the legs of the COPENHAUE Chair have been extended and combined
with the front of THE seat, doubled up and mirrored. With a strong idea,
the variations are endless.
Same chair, two different expressions, endless possibilities.
COPENHAGUE TABLES
CPH10
The COPENHAGUE table series combines diversity and simplicity. The
University of Copenhagen needed a range of tables that offered variety,
flexibility and functionality in a welcoming and homely expression.
MOULDED PLYWOOD TABLES
CPH110 + CPH Chair
The university requested several different types of tables: desks,
meeting tables, dining tables and cafe tables. The Bouroullecs approached
this challenge by imitating the COPENHAGUE chair’s bent seat in the
tabletop used for the COPENHAGUE moulded Plywood Table, highlighting the
kinship. The visual and aesthetic bend provided an additional benefit:
a cable gutter for keeping cords and cables out of sight.
The characteristic bend in the BoUroullec design is also a key element
in the COPENHAGUE Moulded Plywood Desk, which includes a support for open
books and notepads. This clever feature gives the desk its unique and
almost human expression.
