Patient
NEW TECHNOLOGIES, NEW CONCEPTS
Operating room design is changing in order to
meet the requirements dictated by new procedures,
technologies and methods. This trend
will very likely continue for the foreseeable
future. When designing a new operating room,
it’s imperative to understand both the present
and possible future needs of the client.
FUTURE-PROOF DESIGN CONCEPTS
Dräger offers a wide range of products
designed with maximum flexibility in mind.
This is true both in terms of daily clinical
routine as well as long range planning. They
ensure smooth workflow, superior ergonomics
and offer custom solutions for just about
any workplace design challenge.

Ceiling fixtures
Ceiling fixtures for supply units
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The universal Dräger ceiling mount supports
the installation of Agila, Motiva and Forta
supply units as well as the Pendula. They are
designed for either anchor (fig. B + D) or boltthrough
(fig. A + C) mounting. The ceiling
supply can be directly attached to a concrete
ceiling (direct mounting, see A1 and B1 in
figure below).
A variable fixture kit enables mounting up to
1200 mm under the concrete ceiling in order
to bridge the space between it and a false
ceiling. A media flange, located between the
raw and false ceilings, offers enough space for
connecting supply voltage, medical gas, vacuum
and data cables. The installation manuals
are included in the delivery.
PLANNING GUIDELINES
Dräger ceiling supply units are validated and
certified for use with these ceiling fixtures.
This certification is invalidated if non-Dräger
ceiling mounting systems are used.
The ceiling mount must meet the following
criteria:
– 12.500 Nm of torque at the lower end
of the fixture
– 9.000 N tensile force at the ceiling
If the building design is not compatible with
a Dräger ceiling mount, a custom design can
be substituted. Certification of the two conditions
stated above is mandatory. The performance
specifications of a Dräger ceiling
supply unit cannot be guaranteed if a mounting
design is used which does not meet the
required criteria listed above. In such cases,
any given approvals are automatically invalidated.
Available for:
– Anchor mounting: Anchor mounting is
possible if the ceiling is constructed
with at least 250 mm of B 25 concrete
– Bolt-through mounting: Bolt-through
mounting is required if the ceiling
thickness is less than 250 mm or the
concrete quality is less than B 25.
Ceiling fixtures for OR lights/display arms
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Dräger ceiling mount supports the installation
of lights and display holders (on the
central axis). The OR light/display arm can be
fixed directly under the concrete ceiling
(direct mounting). The distance tube allows
mounting at heights of up to 1200 mm under
a concrete ceiling in order to bridge the space
above a false ceiling. The installation manuals
are included with delivery.
MOUNTING OPTIONS
Direct mount
This system is recommended as a direct
mount or for use with a false ceiling up to a
distance of 600 mm between the concrete
Gas Terminal Units
Planning and designing Gas Management
Systems for either complete hospitals or
individual areas like a new IC or OR area is
a challenging task. Different international
standards and guidelines provide different
information, require different system configurations
and different approaches to all the
challenges occurring.
Dräger is at your side when it comes to solving
these challenges and optimizing the system
design for the benefit of the hospital.
We have more than 50 years experience in
designing, building and testing Gas
Management Systems.
As every project is different and the systems
tailor-made for the hospital, it is difficult to
provide generic planning details. Therefore
we kindly ask you to contact your local
Dräger representative for individual planning
support.
GAS TERMINAL UNITS
The locations and quantities of gas terminal
units are essential parts of the planning of
every Gas Management System. Depending
on the clinical procedures and applications,
different gases are required in different hospital
areas and the amount of units provided
needs to match processes and devices used
there. Dräger builds world-renowned gas terminal
units since over 40 years and is offering
outlets according to DIN, British Standard and
other international types.
Alarm Management
ALARM MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
A complex system like a medical Gas
Management System requires good operational
management and provides a host of information.
Dräger Alarm Management Systems
consolidate all this information like operational
and emergency alarms. Analogue operational
data (e.g. pressure and flow) can also easily
be integrated. All information can be displayed
where ever required with LED-, text- or touch
display monitors and connected to integrated
building management systems.
which ensures that all gases are
available at the required points of use. Proper
system calculation according to Dräger
Design Guidelines and international standards
and comprehensive testing and installation
ensure quality and performance of the overall
system.

Learn more about planning an OR.
Planning an OR is a complex and technically
challenging process. This chapter will address the
many questions encountered when designing a
new OR.
An intimate knowledge of the Dräger product portfolio
44 |
PLANNING DOCUMENTS FOR OR |
GENERAL PLANNING
General planning
It is important to keep the following in mind:
CEILING SUPPLY UNITS
– Which anesthesia device (lifting or mobile version)?
– Which surgical devices have to be placed
(size, weight, media connections)?
– Is a cart (MovaCart) in use which could be docked
at the supply unit?
– Are there infusion pumps which have to be mounted?
– What is the most ergonomic placement of devices?
– Select a long or short column/head/equipment rack
(e.g. AN-device under or in front column)
– Select an arm system (where must the supply unit to
be placed, where are parking the positions?)
– Select height adjustable or non-adjustable system
(e.g. different staff and heights)
– Select workplace components (shelves, infusion poles)
– Select handles/grips for brakes/lift (from where will
the units be positioned? back, front)
– Select cable management (are many cables and hoses to be
expected? How can they be managed? Cable boxes,
cable holder, channels?)
CEILING MOUNT
– Design the ceiling fixture for max. load capacity (upgradeability)
– Select a uni-flange for possible double CSU (upgradeability)
– Design of double CSU: clarify dead swivel range
of arm system > long distance tubes on rear or front side
– Consider a second anesthesia CSU for TIVA
(Total intravenous Anesthesia) or infusion management
– Possible parking positions for supply units for OR change
> stops in arm systems have to be set accordingly
– For MediaDocking: The column has to be equipped with the same
media outlets. If a replacement anesthesia device is necessary
hoses and cables must be available to ensure media supply
– Consider possible collisions of pendants with air flow ceiling
curtains or other interior fixtures
– Consider space (clearance height) under arm systems
(arm/motor hood) and grips of OR lights, space under columns
for cleaning or further devices such as patient warmer or
suction systems
OR LIGHTS/CAMERAS/DISPLAYS
– How many light heads are required?
– Which size is necessary?
– Do you have a central axis?
(is it possible? movement of C-Bow)
or a separate mounting on two sides?
– Do you need a third light at foot end?
(e.g. for vein harvesting)
– Do you need a small examination light?
(e.g. preparation of catheter)
– Do you need an integrated camera or external camera?
– How will the lights be controlled?
(at cardanic, wall control panel, remote control, touch screen
(integrated OR))
– Where will displays be placed?
(size and number is important)
– Select a display holder
(e.g. Pendula, display holder at central axis or holder
at supply unit)
PLANNING DOCUMENTS FOR OR |
GENERAL PLANNING
Special OR types
Most common are Hybrid, Integrated and Modular ORs.
HYBRID OR
D-62775-2012
This type of OR is the combination of a
conventional operating room (e.g. heart
surgery) and a imaging system (e.g. catheter
lab). In this working environment, many devices
are require red and their placement must
be carefully considered. Imaging devices will
require mobile and ceiling-based x-ray shielding
and walls and windows must also contain
lead shielding. For the interventionist, a
sufficient number of monitors is essential.
The main monitor is often quite large (up tp
60"). The ceiling-mounted rails which support
the imaging equipment necessitate long swivel
arms in order for them to be able to reach
the operating field.
INTEGRATED OR
An Intergrated OR is a complete system.
Nearly all functions in the room are controlled
centrally by one system. This system controls
the doors, blinds, light, table, OR lights and
many other functions. In addition, video
management of the room is done by these
integration systems. These rooms will typically
contain a large number of devices (e.g. control
units) and interfaces. Providing sufficient
shelf space for device placement can be challenging
in rooms such as this. The devices
involved often require special media outlets
and cables (e.g. fibre optic).
PLANNING DOCUMENTS FOR OR | GENERAL PLANNING | 47
MODULAR OR
Modular ORs are comprised out of single
modules. These modules are prefabricated.
The prefabricated walls are already equipped
with electrical sockets and gas outlets. This
type of wall can allow the integration of
modern materials such as glass, artwork or
even illumination.
The advantages of such Ors include short
planning and construction times and flexible
room design.
