They say one person’s
rubbish is another person’s
treasure - this is certainly
true for our Borneo Trip
students who have just
signed up to the ‘Phil’ the Bag
Clothes Recycling Scheme
that will turn old and
unwanted clothing into much
needed funds for the
organisation.
A team of 15 students are
raising money in order to fund
a community project they will undertake in Borneo this summer where they
hope to build a new playground for children at one of the schools in a small
rural village. They are running their fundraising recycling campaign in
partnership with experts
“Despite a number of local textile banks and
charity shops that welcome donations of
used clothing, many people still bin their old
unwanted clothing– why not donate them
instead? You’ll be helping us raise money
for our Borneo community project and you’ll
be helping the environment at the same
time.” Colin Clarke (Year 13 student)
at ‘Phil’ the Bag, who
will give the Borneo
team up to £600 for
every tonne of clothing
collected. As they pay
by the kilo, every item
counts, so our
fundraising potential is
tremendous!

The Rt. Hon. Michael Gove MP attended a Presentation of the Windlesham
Junior Academy Cup and Scholarship Programme at Windlesham Golf Club
on Friday 25 January. Sarah Wlmore (9D) received a Scholarship for the
second year running, for being Joint Winner in Division 2 with a total of 389
points.
As part of the presentation Sarah had to speak for 5 minutes on her year as a
scholar and how she had benefitted from her year as a girl scholar at
Windlesham, an award she had received last year.
The programme has been designed to reward commitment and achievement
within a structured junior coaching scheme and it enables junior golfers a
supported route into full golf club membership. The Academy Cup Scheme
awards points throughout the year for a variety of elements including
attendance to coaching sessions, attitude towards their golf, achievement through the year, dress code, entry to
external County events and representing Windlesham Golf Club in matches.

As you will be aware we have been in discussion with a group of
students to plan an alternative drama activity in the Spring Term but
unfortunately it has proven too difficult to organise. Students and parents are asked to
support the Year 9 LAMDA production which will run in the Summer Term.
We look forward to the Collingwood Production returning in 2014.

Collingwood enjoyed four top ten finishes at Robert Mays School in Hampshire!
Mr Cleary accompanied a group of Years 7 and 8 girls to this event.
With four minutes to prepare for their race, Year 8 went first in a field of 43 runners.
Congratulations to Megan Raby who finished in 2nd place and Jasmine Alamo who
finished in 6th place.
Year 7, who ran a shorter distance, were in a field of 57 runners. Congratulations to Becky Storer who
finished in 4th place and Sammi Shaw who finished in 9th place.
Mr Cleary reported that the students were a credit to the College. Well done!

Textiles make up 12% of landfill. By recycling them, you
can help to protect the environment.
To participate in this ecofriendly
fundraiser, simply
drop off your unwanted
clothing in any type of bag
at any College Reception
on/before Friday 19 April.
“Fundraising traditionally calls for
donations of money, but not this time!
Instead, we want items usually placed
in the bin. In this climate of fastfashion,
people are replacing their
clothes more frequently than ever.
The old ones usually end up binned,
or are left in the back of a wardrobe,
gathering dust.”

Scholarships are offered each year to the winners of Divisions 1 and 2. The scholarships provide a year
of structured coaching, mentoring and a free membership for the winners. In return the Scholars commit to being
ambassadors for the club with an expectation that they take part in the Captains’ Charity
Day, Drive-In and Club Championships. In addition, the Scholars make presentations to
the Committee on their progress and development throughout the year.
A special mention also goes to Tom Hall (11J) who
came second in Division 1 and Dominic Hall (7C)
who was the winner of Division 3.

Students who complete a book review are entered into
a monthly prize draw.

The Year 7 and 8 girls basketball teams have had a fantastic season. Both
teams were entered into the North West Surrey Schools competition which
involved them playing in 3 separate tournaments. All of the results were then
combined and a final result was given at the end of the 3 rd tournament.
The girls played against other schools including Woking High, Fullbrook, Kings, Winston Churchill,
SJB, Rydens and George Abbott. Some teams even had an A and B team!
We have some very talented basketball players in both year groups and many of the other schools
commented on their amazing play!
The Year 7 team finished 2 nd narrowly losing out to the winners who were SJB. This still means that
they go through to the next round which is the Surrey Finals and will be held at Surrey Sports Park
in Guildford.
The Year 8 team finished 3 rd behind SJB and Woking High.
Please congratulate the following girls who have been very committed to basketball this year.

Parents often ask us what they can do to encourage their child's
development in literacy. To assist, the English Department have put
together some helpful tips. This week, why not find three types of text (a novel, poem
and newspaper perhaps) and compare how they have been laid out? Encourage your
child to see the differences and think about the reasons why they have been set out this way.
Presentational features are often used in non-fiction texts and are also worth discussing.
Use the bulleted questions to help aid your thought process:
Why are particular words/sections within a text in bold/italics/larger print?
Why have bullet points/numbers been used in this text?
How does the text layout help the reader?
Why has this text been highlighted?
How does a diagram/picture/caption help you to understand the information in this/these pages?
What is the purpose of the list/diagram/caption/sub-heading in this text?
Why has some of the information been presented in a table?
What is the main idea of this/each section/paragraph?
What would be a good heading for this section? Why?
