Collingwood CollegeNews & Views21 November 2012Dear Parents/CarersOFSTED’s Parent View WebsiteThe aim of this letter is to appeal to all thoseparents and carers, who believe that the Collegeprovides a good standard of education, to pleasespend just a few minutes of your time to give usyour support. You may be aware that OFSTED has created a special website, Parent View, which enables parents to rate their child’s school in response to 12 differentquestions, which are fairly similar to those which we circulate in our annualParents’ Survey, the most recent results of which I am pleased to report nowappear on our website at :http://www.collingwoodcollege.com/page_viewer.asp?page=Parents%27+Survey+2012&pid=515Parent View has attracted considerable opposition from schools, because, although parents have to register before logging their views and also tick abox to confirm that they have a child at the school, there is actually nothing toprevent widespread abuse of the system.Thursday 22 November -Friday 23 NovemberEnterprise DaysEventsComingUp ...Tuesday 27 NovemberYear 12 Parents’ EveningThursday 29 NovemberYears 9-11 Spanishstudents - Onatti TheatreCompany visitCollingwoodThursday 6 December -Friday 7 December6th Form Revue, 7.30pm -10.00pm, KingstonTheatreSchools’ data does not appear on Parent View, unless there is a minimum of 3 responses. This, initself, has been a cause for concern, as a school of the size of Collingwood is treated in exactly thesame way as a very small rural infant school with no allowance being made for the size of the schoolpopulation. Please click here to read the remainder of the letter from Mr Oddie ...We woke up in the youth hostel to thefirst frost of the year across thesouthern side of Dartmoor which, naturally, didn’t make the prospect ofspending the following four days outsideall that appealing.Practising micro-nav on the training dayNevertheless, after sausage sandwiches and copiouscups of tea, Alpha group and Bravo group were readyto hit the moor to embark on our adjustment andtraining day, which aimed to prepare our navigation, camp craft and teamwork skills that would be assessedover the four days in order for us to pass theexpeditionsection of ouraward.Click to continue reading aboutthe DofE Gold Expedition ...Collingwood College • Kingston Road • Camberley •Surrey •GU15 4AE •01276 457600

This year's theme is 'We're better without bullying' - it highlights the effect bullying has onachievement (information available at http://www.anti-bullyingalliance.org.uk/)Staff may raise issues relating to anti-bullying week inassemblies/form periods/lessons during the week and will be highlightingthe following areas:What is bullying? The College's definition is as follows:Bullying is the repeated and wilful use of verbal or physical aggression with the intention of hurting anotherperson. Bullying results in pain and distress to the victim. Bullying can be emotional, physical, racist, sexual, religious, homophobic, verbal or cyber. How can students report bullying?Students can speak to their Form Tutor, Year Manager, Pastoral Assistant or subject teacher. If they are at allconcerned about raising a problem in person they can e-mail a member of staff. The key message is that wehave to know about it to deal with it!Is bullying only physical? No, bullying includes inappropriate language - students must not use discriminatory or derogatory languageincluding homophobic ( e.g. ' that's gay'), racist comments or negative language towards disabled people. Norshould they use disparaging language related to perceived ability, race, religion, sexuality, appearance or family background. This cannot be condoned as ‘banter’ - we should all respectindividual differences and celebrate diversity. What about bullying using e-mails, texts or facebook?SummaryAnti-Bullying Week 19 - 25 NovemberCyber-bullying is a worry given the increased technology available. We have madeclear to students that the College has the power to sanction students for any malicious oraggressive emails or texts that have an adverse impact on other students in College even ifthese are sent outside of the College. In such cases it is very likely that there would be policeinvolvement. We want to give all bullying the same importance as we do racist issues and therefore we have asked all staff todeal with such issues in the same assertive way, liaising with senior colleagues as necessary. Any Incidentsare recorded so that we can monitor trends and the success of our strategies to deal with such problems.Mr Tanner - Vice PrincipalWe would like to remind you that the College’s on-linecommunication system is accessible via the Parent Portal(once you have logged in click on the icon as shown onthe right). It would be much appreciated if you would use this innovativesystem when contacting our staff instead of emailing them direct.Thank you for your co-operation in this matter.Collingwood College

Parents and carers will understand that, in a school of nearly 2000 students andmore than 270 staff, there will always be times when a few individuals will feelaggrieved and want to register a complaint, which in the vast majority of cases wewill resolve to their satisfaction. Unfortunately, however, parents are not able to have their responseswithdrawn or changed until the next academic year, which is another cause for concern about ParentView. Our own Parents’ Survey contains a great deal of positive and supportive feedback from parents andcarers, as you will see for yourself – not least a near complete (98%) consensus that the College iswell led and managed. We know that the vast majority of parents and carers are pleased with thestandard of education which we provide. You will understand, therefore, our collective disappointmentthat, of the 3 responses submitted to Parent View, 2 are negative. As I said at the beginning of this letter – we need your support - to ensure that a true picture ofCollingwood is conveyed on Parent View. You can find the website by clicking on:http://parentview.ofsted.gov.uk/parent-view-results/survey/result/23863/currentand registering to give your views on the College. It is a simple process and will not take verylong. Please don’t delay – do it today!Thank you for your support.Yours sincerelyMr Jerry Oddie - PrincipalThe Onatti Theatre Company iscoming to Collingwood on Thursday29 November Period 5, to perform aplay called “En el campamento”.This is Spanish as never experienced before andgives a whole new dimension to languagelearning!!Your son/daughter’s Spanish teacherwill prepare a lesson on keyvocabulary before the play to helpstudents and they’ll be amazed athow much Spanish they already know andunderstand!Students have always given us excellentfeedback on previous plays and will have afantastic time!In order to help us cover the cost of this event andbe able to organise other performances in thefuture, we ask for a voluntary contribution of £4.Please download the letter from the parent portal.Muchas gracias a todosMrs A Riedmuller - MFL DepartmentBelieve and Succeed
