O’Young Proving the One to Beat in the
Porsche Carrera Cup Asia 2008.
Championship leader Darryl O’Young has further
fuelled his hopes of a second Porsche Carrera
Cup Asia (PCCA) title this season with his eighth
straight podium finish, including a win in Round 7
at the notoriously tricky Sentul International
Circuit, Indonesia in July.
Along with GruppeM Racing’s Tim Sugden, O’Young
showed some brilliant driving for Team Jebsen
grabbing the lead from the start of Round 7 and
never giving it up to finish more than three seconds
clear of Sugden who managed to squeeze past
Germany’s ace Christian Menzel of Team StarChase
on the final lap.

But in the following race, Sugden, determined not
to let history repeat itself, made his move on lap
four to snatch the lead and with Australia’s Christian
Jones and O’Young caught up in their own battle, he
was able to pull out a gap at the front and take the
chequered flag.
After being untouchable in Rounds 5 and 6 at the
Zhuhai International Circuit the month prior, Jones,
who set the fastest lap of the race, remained upbeat
despite not taking a win this time round. “Although
I’ve lost points to Darryl in this race, I still believe I’m
in a position to fight for the championship.”

Singapore’s Melvin Choo celebrated a double
victory in searing heat in the two previous rounds
in Zhuhai China, but had to settle for third in Round 7.
Class B pole-sitter Philip Ma of Hong Kong converted
his grid advantage to a victory ahead of Malaysia’s
Tunku Hammam, who later stormed back to take
the win in Round 8.
O’Young now sits comfortably at the top of the
Overall leader board, 11 points clear of Jones
with Sugden another point adrift. In Class B,
Choo remains at the top of the points standings,
ahead of Malaysia’s Tunku Hammam and Australia’s
Paul Tresidder.
Team StarChase with Christian Menzel together with
Ringo Chong of Team Kangshun joined an activity
of the Zhuhai International Circuit and the PCCA to
raise funds for victims of the recent earthquake in
China by treating donors to the ride of a lifetime with
some hot laps in the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car.
The Porsche Carrera Cup Asia is back in action in
September at the inaugural 2008 FORMULA 1
SingTel Singapore Grand Prix, where the drivers will
be amongst the first to compete on the exciting new
Marina Bay street circuit on September 26 – 28. n
