<strong>The</strong> Universal Postal hankers Midget postage meter was developed in England aml placed in service in<br />

April 1926 <strong>The</strong> same year this popular postage meter was introduced in to Canada Types 2 and 3. with over 3<br />

being sold in the period 1927 to 1929<br />

<strong>The</strong> Midget postage meter was introduced into Newfoundland in 1928. A proof indicia is dated 41128.<br />

In Newfoundland, the mailing machine and the postage meter were each purchased and owned by the customer; in<br />

Canada, the mailing machine was purchased by the customer hut the meter was rented. Advertising plates were<br />

available or the Midget postage older.<br />

<strong>The</strong> first Midget postage meter in Newfoundland was pumbased by the Avaloo Telephone Company in<br />

928. <strong>The</strong> serial number was 1", and the meter pnnted values of Ic, 2c, and 3c. <strong>The</strong> Royal Cypher "GvR" was<br />

:hanged to GviR between 1940 and 1946.<br />

1949, this postage mete, was converted by repkcing the name<br />

In 1953, after 25 years of use, the postage meter required parts. Pitney&wes stated the meter was<br />

obsolete and parts were no longer available. It was retired from service. A very brief four years ol Canadian use.<br />

<strong>The</strong> latest known meter with NEWFOUNDLAND is 12 II 49. and the earliest date found with CANADA<br />

is 18 Ill 50. <strong>The</strong> latest is 9 LII 53.<br />

Many covers just bear the irnk, with no townmark. Ad plates are in red and usually wad: TIlE AVALON<br />
