During the discharge of a firearm, escaping gases from the weapon deposit gunshot residue (GSR) on the 

skin of the shooter’s hands, on the clothing of the shooter, and on other objects located in close proximity 

to the shooter. Included in this gaseous cloud of residue are particles composed primarily of primer residue. 

Primer compositions may vary with different types of ammunition and different manufacturers, but the most 

common constituents of primers have been lead styphnate, barium nitrates, and antimony sulfide. Analysis 

and characterization of the residue for the trace elements (lead, barium, and antimony) are used to indicate 

if a suspect has fired, handled, or been in close proximity to a weapon when it was fired. 

The efficient and reliable removal of GSR particles from hands and/or clothing is critical in preserving GSR 

evidence for analysis in the laboratory. The GSR-AA (Atomic Absorption) and GSR-SEM (Scanning Electron 

Microscopy) Gunshot Residue Evidence Collection Kits and supplies shown in this section have been specifically 

designed to meet the needs of both the crime laboratory analyst and the collecting officer in the field. Our 

kits contain all components necessary for GSR collection, including a step-by-step instruction sheet to assure

4 Stub GSR-SEM(C) Collection Kit 

The GSR-SEM(C) is designed for law enforcement agencies whose crime laboratories use SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) 

as their method of GSR analysis and request “Right Back,” “Left Back,” “Right Palm,” and “Left Palm” samples be collected 

from the suspect’s hands.

4 Stub Surface GSR-SEM/SUR(C) Collection Kit 

Agencies are now collecting GSR from surfaces other than a suspected shooter’s hands. Our GSR-SEM/SUR(C) Surface 

Collection Kit is designed for this purpose and simplifies collection, assuring the crime laboratory receives GSR samples that 

are clearly identifiable (i.e. collected from tabletop, dashboard, doorframe, clothing, etc.). 

The vials are labeled Sample Number 1, 2, 3, and 4, and each vial label has a write-on area to indicate where the sample 

was collected. The GSR Analysis Information Form requests a detailed description of where the samples were collected, 

along with other information to assist your crime laboratory.

Our “D” stub and “Q” stub were developed to meet the specific needs of two of our customers and 

are now being used by agencies throughout the world for the following reasons: 

A) Both “D” & “Q” stubs are color-coded 

to correspond with the colored label 

affixed to the protective plastic vial. 

This color-coding of the stub and vial 

label assures the crime laboratory 

analyst that the SEM stub has been

AA Collection Swabs and Nitric Acid Dispenser Kit 

This kit is used for collecting additional GSR from a site 

other than a suspect’s hands: i.e. doorframe of a car used 

in a drive-by shooting or in rooms where a shooting has 

reportedly taken place. Two swabs are supplied in each 

of the five polypropylene snap cap vials with write-on 

labels affixed and one 3 ml dispenser containing a 5% 

nitric acid solution.

Plastic Gloves 

These disposable Plastic Gloves are the same gloves included in our GSR kits 

and are used to eliminate the possibility of trace-metal contamination from the 

collecting officer’s hands. 

Each glove is mounted on a sheet of paper to facilitate putting them on without 

contaminating the gloves. Our gloves are packaged in a ziplock bag to prevent

Hand Bagging Kit 

Our Hand Bagging Kits are used to “bag” the hand of a decedent when suicide 

is suspected. 

The bagging of the hands prevents the loss of GSR from hands while the body

The kit consists of 50 white paper bags and 50 wide rubber bands. The bags and 

rubber bands are packaged in a ziplock bag to prevent trace metal contamination
