Aloha, and welcome to Kailua-Kona, home of the Ford Ironman World Championship!<br />

Throughout race week, you will experience athletes’ pre-race excitement and nerves; take in the<br />

energy. On Saturday, 1,800 athletes will attempt a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike and 26.2-mile<br />

run across the beautiful Big Island of Hawai’i. Their journeys to the starting line have inclu<strong>de</strong>d<br />

obstacles and accomplishments, and each athlete has a unique story to share. From the soonto-be<br />

2010 Ironman World Champions to the athletes who cross the finish line just shy of<br />

midnight, you will witness individuals who possess <strong>de</strong>ep courage, perseverance and passion.<br />

Observe their joy and pri<strong>de</strong> as they test themselves mentally and physically, with some fulfilling<br />

lifelong goals. Be inspired by their journeys and find meaning in the Ironman mantra,<br />

“ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE®.”<br />

From introducing the world to an unlikely challenge among fifteen men to helping grow this<br />

event into a global phenomenon, media have played a vital role in the rich history of Ironman.<br />

There are few sporting events that can match the excitement and emotion of the Ford Ironman<br />

World Championship; you have the opportunity to capture and showcase all of this through<br />

your imagery and words. If this is your first assignment covering the Ford Ironman World<br />

Championship, you will soon see why this race has grown in popularity with each year. For<br />

those of you who have covered before, we are glad you have returned and hope this year’s event<br />

<strong>de</strong>epens your love for the sport.<br />
