celebrated his win with an overall time of 8:20:21. Other<br />
top men’s finishers inclu<strong>de</strong>d Raelert, Chris McCormack<br />
and Rasmus Henning. Great Britain’s Chrissie Wellington<br />
won for the third-consecutive year, breaking Paula Newby-<br />
Fraser’s course record that had been in place for 17 years.<br />
Wellington took the lead early, dominating a competitive<br />
professional women’s field and winning by nearly 20 minutes<br />
in a time of 8:54:02. On her first attempt at a fulldistance<br />
race, Australia’s Mirinda Carfrae, an Ironman 70.3<br />
World Champion, placed second behind Wellington. With<br />
more than 10 70.3 titles to her name, Carfrae swam a 58:45,<br />
biked a 5:14:18 and ran a 2:56:51, finishing in 9:13:59. Her<br />
first-ever marathon broke the women’s run course record,<br />
set in 2008 by Wellington. Among the race field were many<br />
inspirational age group athletes, including U.S. Navy Cmdr.<br />
David Haas, who trained for the event while <strong>de</strong>ployed on<br />
the USS Thach; Elizabeth Thompson, a stroke survivor who<br />
re-learned to walk just two years prior to attempting the<br />
140.6-mile journey; and Mike Adamle, a former professional<br />
football running back and well-known national and Chicagoarea<br />
sportscaster, who tested his strength and drive for the<br />
second time in Kailua-Kona.<br />
