As Chairman of the NSA Northern 

Region I would like to extend a 

sincere welcome to everyone 

attending to this year’s NSA North 

Sheep, being held in one of the 

most magnificent areas of Cumbria. 

The Northern region is one of 

the largest regions within the NSA 

and we are very proud to have a 

diverse range of farmers from around our 

region on our committee. We are constantly striving to 

promote, as well as sustain, the long term growth of the sheep 

industry within our area. We work as a team to deal with the 

variety of issues, challenges and opportunities that are currently 

facing the sheep industry. With a General Election this year, 

change in inevitably afoot, and the Northern Region aim to be 

proactive to ensure the industry’s long term sustainability. 

Being held in our region North Sheep 2015 provides us with 

the perfect forum to showcase all aspects of the sheep sector. 

We are using this event to celebrate the ever growing sheep 

industry and to highlight the new developments within the 

sector. Not only are we looking forward to welcoming farmers, 

breeders and shepherds, Millstone Moor Farm, Cockermouth by 

kind permission of Neil and Sally Marston, we are also delighted 

to welcome our auction companies, suppliers,manufacturers 

and breed societies . 

As a father of three children, I know that farming is rapidly 

becoming one of the most difficult industries for young people 

to get into ,so we need to look at every opportunity possible to 

encourage and support new entrants into this sector. Events 

such as North Sheep are a perfect platform to engage with the 

younger farming community. They provide them with up-todate 

information and are a forum to ‘voice’ their opinions as 

well as giving them an opportunity to socialise with others in 

the industry. 

Neil and Sally are well known for their excellent quality of 

sheep which are bred, shown and sold. In particular they have 

had great success nationwide with their North of England Mules 

and their ‘Highberries’ Flock of Blue-Faced Leicester’s. Millstone 

Moor Farm is 650 acres where Neil Farms with his parents 

Raymond and Frances. 

On behalf of everyone in the Northern Region I look forward

Weather and farming policies are two things that have 

a massive influence on the success of farming. One is 

entirely out of our individual control and the other we 

can influence to a limited degree, although far more 

if we join forces through organisations like NSA. 

Equally important are markets and prices. Some 

would say these are out of our control too, but I 

would disagree. What happens globally in terms of 

demand and supply, and wider economic factors, 

may well be out of reach, but understanding market 

trends, hitting specifications, getting closer to the end user, and supporting 

efficiency through the entire supply chain is within our grasp. 

Similarly, efficiency and production costs are things we can do something 

about and this is essentially about optimising the effectiveness of our investment 

– whether that be investment in genetics, land and soil, seeds and fertilisers, 

feeds or health treatments. We have to make sure we spend money on the things 

that yield money, and not just in the short term. 

When we look at farming policies the complexity of implementing the most 

recent round of CAP reform defies the intention of simplification. The CAP 

sometimes seems to be out of step with reality, and with global population 

forecasts and food security getting more attention,you might think that 

incentives might once again swing towards production. 

Personally I wouldn’t hold my breath, and would predict in the future 

we will see continuing moves towards free and unsupported market trade, 

and incentives to tackle climate change, resource efficiency, environmental 

enhancements, and more social gains such as alleviating poverty. For this read 

‘public goods’ but don’t ask about the public good of feeding people because 

that gets tangled up in markets and economies. 

What does all this mean for your average sheep farmer in Northern England? 

Well, stay abreast of new technology and combine this with the best of 

traditional practice; do things as well as you possibly can and apply attention to 

detail. Understand where policies are heading; be ahead of the curve if you can 

or at least ride the crest of the wave. But unless you have other means don’t get 

left behind, it will be an uncomfortable place. 

Finally, if you haven’t already, then join the NSA. Collective strength will help, 

the rewards are greater than the costs, and as NSA North Sheep will show, we 

offer a great gateway for information and knowledge.

Looking for Progressive 

Young Shepherds 

The biggest long-term challenge which continues to face the industry is encouraging young people to 

become involved. So, to encourage the next generation, and designed to help equip tomorrow’s sheep 

farmers with the skills they need and give recognition to 

the skills they have acquired the “NSA North Sheep 

Young Shepherd of the Year Award”, looking for the best 

young shepherd or shepherdess in the North. 

The competition sponsored by Askham Bryan and Newton 

Rigg Colleges is a test of key shepherding skills in five areas, 

and is open to young people aged up to 26 years and 

living in Northumberland, Co Durham, Cumbria, 

Lancashire, Isle of Man, North & East Yorkshire. 

The entrants taking part all have a British Wool 

Marketing Board Blue Seal Certificate for shearing and 

have been chosen on the strength of their written entry 

to the competition. 

The tasks to be completed during North Sheep by each 

competitor are to: 

Complete EBLEX lamb selection 

Shear two sheep 

ATV Handling, completing a set course 

Give examples of correct foot care 

techniques/ handling, vaccinating & dosing 

Answer questions on flock 

management and health issues 

Matt Bagley Head of Agriculture at Newton Rigg College,gives some background to the tasks: 

This is a multi-skilled competition, a test of skills, knowledge and aspirations which covers the main 

features of handling sheep. ATV competency is a very important, and will be testing health and safety aspects 

and all-round handling competency and speed awareness. 

Within the younger generation, there is a considerable amount 

of talent and a deep rooted history in the sheep industry. The 

competition side between the young people is increasing in 

popularity which I find very heartening, as it gives these young 

people, who are of course our farmers of the future, an opportunity to 

showcase their skills. Competitions such as this inspire the competitors 

as they can see just how good their knowledge and skills are.

What is the Future 

of the Sheep Industry? 

The Seminars focus on Sheep Health Issues, the future of the 

industry and how planting trees can benefit land and livestock. 

The seminars taking place throughout the day are 

focussing on key issues within the sheep industry. 

The speakers are all experts in their field will give the 

expert’s answer on how to get the best from your 

flock. 

The topics being covered include:- 

1. CAP and Countryside Stewardship, 

Sheep Health Issues 

2. The Outlook For The Sheep Industry 

3. How Planting Trees Can Benefit Land 

And Livestock 

4. Supplementing Grazing for Optimum Results 

Probably one of the most talked about issues at the 

current time is CAP and the Countryside Stewardship 

Scheme, and this seminar has been designed to 

give farmers the very latest information from Will 

Cockbain of Natural England, Advisors H&H Land 

and Property, and Cumbrian Farmer and Swaledale 

Breeder Alan Alderson. 

As David Morley, Environmental Adviser at H&H 

Land and Property,says:“This is a completely new 

scheme. The details of which are forever changing 

and evolving. My aim is to highlight the information 

as much as we know it, and describe the potential 

impacts and opportunities for sheep farmers. 

This scheme is all competitive so I will discuss the 

priorities that farmers need to start considering to 

benefits themselves.” 

Chief Executive of the NSA, Phil Stocker, will give 

his thoughts on the outlook for the sheep industry 

and his visions for the future. Looking at the export 

side of the industry will be Head of exports at EBLEX, 

J P Garnier, and they will be joined by Norman 

Bagley from AIMS. 

Helen Chesshire,Senior Adviser from the 

Woodland Trust,will discuss how Planting trees can 

benefit land and livestock, in the Flock and Foliage 

Seminar. She will be promoting the Trust’s view 

about the benefits of agro-forestry to sheep farming. 

She tells us, ”We argue that tree planting can help 

to prevent health issues, for example hypothermia, 

liver fluke and lameness, by providing natural shelter 

and reducing water logged conditions, which in turn 

will support more cost effective sheep systems.” 

Helen’s presentation explains how trees can 

improve the resilience and productivity of sheep 

farming systems. This will be followed by Peter 

Leeson, Partnerships Manager of the Woodland Trust, 

as he briefly explains the advice and support the Trust 

can provide to farmers interested in tree planting, 

before opening the floor to questions. 

David Thornton M.Sc.,Technical Manager, 

Rumenco Ltd will present Supplementing Grazing 

for Optimum Results. Histalk will highlight the likely 

nutrient gaps in grazing that limit performance, which 

depending on the time of year, might be energy level, 

protein level and quality, minerals, trace elements and 

vitamins. 

He adds: “My aim is to ensure that producers are 

better informed over their choice of supplementary 

feeding programme to exploit the grazing and their 

stock’s potential.” 

In the Sheep Health Issues seminar, Philip Skuce 

from the Moredun Institute will present the latest 

information on Fluke, while his contemporary Stewart 

Burgess will cover Scab. Joe Henry of Alnorthumbria 

Vets will give details of their strategy for managing 

scab on farms and on a regional basis and as he 

says: “The best way to solve a problem is to share a 

problem “ 

He explains their strategy, “Here in 

Northumberland if ever we have diagnosed SCAB 

– Scab is never a one farm problem, so we ask the 

farmer to tell all of his neighbours, because we cannot 

break confidentially, and then we arrange a meeting 

in the nearest Village Hall whereby we will discuss the 

issues, and come up with an agreed time which treats 

the problem in a coordinated fashion. This works – 

and it is something that sheep farmers across the 

length and breadth of the country really should take 

on board. A collaborative approach is the way forward 

in minimising ongoing costs and welfare issues.

WHAT TO SEE AND DO 

AT NSA NORTH SHEEP 2015 

For the first time in 10 years NSA Northern Region’s biennial event,NSA North Sheep, is returning to 

Cumbria. It is being staged at Millstone Moor Farm, by kind permission of hosts Neil and Sally Marston, 

who are noted for the quality of their Blue-faced Leicesters and North of England Mule sheep. 

Cumbria is one of the country’s most renowned 

sheep producing areas and Millstone Moor Farm is a 

working farm on the edge of the Lake District. 

With visitors expected from the length and 

breadth of the UK NSA North Sheep is the major 

sheep event in the North of the country, and an 

important industry showcase. This year there is a very 

strong focus on the challenges and opportunities 

being faced by sheep farmers and the developments 

within the sheep sector. 

After Tim Davies CEO of Carrs Milling Ind, 

officially opens NSA North Sheep 2015, NSA 

President the Duke of Montrose will present the 

prestigious NSA George Hedley Memorial Award 

2014 to David Croston M.B.E. former Chief Executive 

of EBLEX and active member of the NSA. This award 

is made annually by the NSA to an individual who 

has made an outstanding contribution to the sheep 

industry. 

Showcasing and demonstrating the latest 

information and technology available within the 

industry are over two hundred trade stands with a 

number of companies launching new products and 

services. There are35 breed societies represented, 

and a series of seminars and competitions being held 

throughout the day. 

Guided tours of the Marston’s 650 acre farm, 

and home to the North of England Mule-producing 

Highberries Crossing Blue-Faced Leicester flock, will 

take place throughout the day. The farm tours are 

being sponsored by Lloyd Ltd, Portequip, Jennings 

Brewery and Cockermouth Fudge and Sweet Shop. 

Not only will you see some of the most tremendous 

breeding sheep in Cumbria, you will also see some 

of the most spectacular views, panoramas across 

the Northern Lake District across the Solway Firth 

towards South West Scotland. 

Maintaining a healthy flock is always a top 

priority, and the current health issues being faced by 

sheep farmers and the most effective way to manage 

them will be discussed in a dedicated seminar. 

Other seminars include CAP and Countryside 

Stewardship, the outlook for the sheep industry and 

supplementing grazing for optimum results. 

Not only is this is an important educational event 

for the industry, it also an important educational 

event for local schools, and this year we are delighted 

to welcome many schools from the surrounding area. 

Throughout the day there are a number of 

competitions taking place including the 2015 

Young Shepherd of the Year contest, supported by 

Newton Rigg and Askham Bryan College’s. In the 

inter-county Sheep Shearing Competition, arranged 

by Lakeland Shearers, teams of two from each of 

the 6 northern counties will battle it out to become 

NSA North Sheep 2015 County Team Shearing 

Champions 

On a more light-hearted note, a 

“Ready Steady Cook” competition will 

demonstrate that sheep-selling 

professionals can turn lamb from the fell 

to lamb for the table. 

In addition to Major Sponsor Carrs

Lakeland hill farm to host 

industry summer showcase 

Millstone Moor Farm, Cockermouth, is the 350-acre family farm run by Neil and Sally Marston 

and home to the Highberries crossing Leicester flock which produces some of the most sought-after 

North of England Mule ewe lambs. 

The Marston Family 

Cumbria is recognised as one of 

the UK’s key sheep producing 

areas, and Millstone Moor Farm is 

home to one of Cumbria’s most 

noted flocks. The farm provides a 

perfect showcase for NSA North 

Sheep 2015, giving visitors the 

opportunity to see a well-run 

traditional North Lakeland Farm in 

action. A bonus is provided by the 

amazing panoramic views of the 

North Lakes, across to South West 

Scotland. 

Trading as N.C. Marston, the 

business is a partnership between 

Neil and his parents, Raymond 

and Frances. Neil runs the day to 

day farming enterprise with his 

wife, Sallya well-known local show 

jumper. They employ one regular 

casual worker, Jack Cartmell, 

who is integral to the overall 

management says Neil: “Jack is a 

huge asset to us and we certainly 

could not manage the farm 

without his support.” 

Neil, now aged 44, grew up on 

the family’s dairy farm at Scaleby, 

near Carlisle and has always been 

passionate about sheep farming. 

He started his own flock of 

pedigree Blue Faced Leicesters as 

a child, 30 years ago,aged 15. 

To pursue and further develop 

their sheep farming enterprise, 

the family moved from Scaleby 

to Millstone Moor Farm six years 

ago. This is a traditional North 

Lakeland Farm, which unusually 

for the area, benefits from fields 

which are sizeable in comparison 

to many other farms. Since 

moving to the area, the family 

have extended their acreage and 

today they rent an additional 300 

acres of land on holdings nearby. 

The Marston family are 

delighted to be hosting the NSA 

North Sheep 2015 and are looking 

forward to welcoming people with 

both an interest in sheep and the 

development of the sector. In 

terms of sheep farming, Millstone 

Moor Farm offers something for 

everyone, from the commercial 

farmer to the pedigree sheep 

breeder. As it is post-lambing, 

there will be in the region of 

5,500 head of sheep on the farm, 

comprising of 2,000 ewes and 

3,500 lambs. 

During their visit, people will 

see the award-winning stock; a full 

cross-section and spectrum, from 

the hardy hill ewes to lowland 

sheep, and learn about the 

family’s management techniques. 

Millstone Moor Farm, is home 

to a 1,000-strong Swaledale 

flock, started six years ago, 

including 30 pure-bred pedigree 

Swaledales which bear the. 

Millstone Moor prefix. The 30 pure 

bred Blue Faced Leicesters have 

the Highberries prefix. There are 

an additional 50 non-registered 

pure Beltex ewes, 500 Mule ewes 

and 300 Texel ewes. The farm 

also runs a herd of 70 suckler 

cows Limousin and Belgium Blue 

Crosses.

Bentham and Cockermouth, and 

have sold their highly-regarded 

North of England Mulesand 

Blue Faced Leicesters lambs at

prime lambs all go deadweight to 

St Merryn, Merthyr) 

Their tups are much sought 

after, and were the highest priced 

at Cockermouth auction mart in 

2014, at £7,000, with an overall 

average of around £2,000 fortups 

and females. 

Neil is a regular on the 

showing circuit, the highlight of 

the year being the Royal Highland 

Show where in 2014 he won the 

mule ewe lamb class, and overall 

reserve as well as the Blue Faced 

Leicester Male Championship 

and Overall reserve in his first year 

show Bluefaced Leicesters. 

Neil is keen to point out that 

the North of England Mule is 

becoming more popular because 

with the right terminal sire you 

can produce E grade carcases 

which are very easily finished off 

grass, it is an easily manageable, 

low maintenance and low labour 

sheep. It is suitable for high 

stocking, is easy to lamb and

more profitable. He adds: “It is 

amazing how you can turn a 

high maintenance sheep like the 

Leicester with one cross into such 

an easy manageable sheep as the 

Mule.” 

Neil’s breeding policy is to try 

wherever possible to anticipate 

what the market wants. They cross 

their home-bred North of England 

Mules with a Beltex tup, to provide 

them with a finished product with 

minimal input. “Prime stock is 

unpredictable so we always try to 

breed as many head of breeding 

stock as possible as we know 

quality breeding stock demands a 

good premium.” Says Neil 

There are extensive housing 

and farm buildings at Millstone 

Moor whichare used for both 

housing and lambing in March 

and April as spring weather 

conditions on this farm, which 

rises to 220-metres-above-sealevel, 

can be so unpredictable. 

Since the Marston’s took over the 

farm they have converted many 

of these buildings to make them 

more efficient and manageable 

for one person feeding and 

bedding. 

In the past the farm was part of 

the ELS Scheme, however they are 

currently in a 

transactional 

period and 

are awaiting 

the details of the new 

schemes. 

The April weather 

especially is a key factor in 

determining the success 

of the year, both in terms 

of lambing, survival rates 

and, of course, forage 

potential. The farm is 

almost self-sufficient in 

fodder. Around 100 acres 

is utilised for clamp silage 

and eight acres of turnips 

and root crops are grown 

for finishing. 

Some concentrates 

and minerals are 

purchased in as is straw for 

bedding purposes. 

The Marston family 

are very much looking 

forward to welcoming the 

sheep industry to their 

farm and to Cumbria for 

NSA North Sheep. They 

hope that visitors will not 

only enjoy seeing some 

tremendous sheep in one 

of the most magnificent 

parts of the North Lakes, 

but will also learn how

Lamb! 

One of the more light hearted aspects of NSA North Sheep 2015 

is the Ready Steady Cook Competition. 

Local Auctioneers will be challenged on their skills in 

the kitchen, cooking the lamb they normally sell in 

the ring. Based on the popular TV show, The North 

Sheep Ready Steady Cook competition has two 

heats and a final Cook-off.

on the microphone to become RSC commentator 

for the day. Barbara Huddart, who trained as a
