The old village of Sopiki, Pogoni N Epirus and the mountain
Nemertsika
From the book " The old Villaqe of Sopiki as we knew it and remember it." by, Loui-s James
The old vitlage of Sopiki, Epirus, which by virtue of its large population, was also
known as Comopolis of Sopiki, was also famous for its many springs of cold, icy
water, and was suspended by two huge mountains; one of each was named
Nemertsika, being the closest as well as the highest, about 2495 meters, (9980 feet)
above the sea level.
Nemertsika, with its panoramic view from the village below, not only was the tallest
vertically, but if one woutd go on a journey and walk more southward and reach the
summit to a certain locale known as " Tsouka", he would see the town of Yiannina
and the Limni ton Yanninon ( the Lake of Yannina), and on a clear day could see as far to the northeast the town of
Corfu, Kerkira.
The mountain with its deep ravines known as "Harathres" and gigantic cliffs in a steeplike formation had clear
running water from the snow above which lasted from October until early May of each year.
Geographically, it begins at the boothill of Clisoura, and the town of Premeti on the north side and extends
horizontally and widely all the way in a straight line tapering down in the village of "Mitsitie"
During the months of May, June, July and August the sheep herders would bring their enormous numbers of flocks
of sheep for grazing and ultimately churn their milk in to delicious fresh cheese called -Hloro tiri". They would bring it
horseback on a daily basis in "Tzadiles" (perforated sacks) and sell it to the villagers, hence they would salt it and
place it in wooden banels to last throughout the winter until the following spring.
Aside from these worthy attributes, Nemertsika was known for its hygienic qualities as a healthy resort, due in paft to
the purity of its air. lt has been nanated by the elders of the village that during the hot summer months, many wealthy
citizens would travel to Nemertsika to spend a few days and some even longer in hopes of being cured from suth
dreaded diseases as tuberculosis and long cancer, Still others would come not only from the near by towns of Greece,
but more significantly, from such distant places as ltaly and elsewhere seeking nature's gift of Aerotherapy.
Another equally beneficial by-produci derived from the mountain was the natural availability of its ice. Duilng times of
bodily injury, as of someone falling, resulting in swetling, the ice proved an invaluable aid, Even in the more serious
cases of appendix or appendicitis, it was incumbent upon the local doctor to order or suggest an immediate
application of ice to relieve the suffering person's discomfort . Due to the urgent nature of the situation, volunteering
relatives formed in two or thee groups and were dispatched to the mountain to seek isolated spots in deep holes
hovered by a large suspended rock thereby preventing the force of the sun from melting the ice.
After locating the ice, it was picked by a digging tool and placed in heavy bags and brought to the family of the sick
person and placed instantly to the afflicted area.
In addition, it is appropriate at this point, that during the last days of the Second World War, the late John Nicozisin,
(President of the Brotherhood that time), father of Tim, Mary. and Alex, initiated a plan whereby the Sopikiotes in St.
Louis during that period should undertake to study the possibility of the acquisition of that section of the mountain
encompassing our village from whatever govemment being the legal owner thereof.
Subsequently. Mr, Nicozisin ananged for a meeting to take place and the idea was proposed and accepted
unanimously, although it would have been impossible for any govemment to approve such a deal,
The purchase of the mountain would have had tremendous value to the villagers ftom its unexplored natural
resgurces, let atone the income deriving from the sheepherding and cheese producing rights.
Unfortunately, how could it have been foreseen that our entire village would be ceded to the communistic regime of
slavery and tyranny.
Tyranny, like Hell, is not easily conquered yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict the more
glorious the triumph.
What we obtain too cheaply we esteem too lightly, it is deamess only that gives everything its value.
