“Innovation doesn’t have to mean starting
from zero. It can be recognizing what assets
are out there and leveraging them creatively
in an unanticipated way. Haas and the
Berkeley MBA program encourage that.”
“The entrepreneurial resources here are
extraordinary. For example, the Opportunity
Recognition class was an intense, firsthand
learning experience for me. It turned
out that I had a great idea that wasn’t a great
opportunity. Getting that insight was invaluable
and will shape the way I evaluate future
entrepreneurial endeavors.”
The Berkeley MBA Program is about developing leaders
who possess a distinct advantage: the ability to lead using
the power of innovation. At the Haas School, Leading Through
Innovation is defined as a mindset and an array of capabilities that will
enable you to promote and foster environments where innovation flourishes.
In acquiring this way of thinking and doing, you can become a leader of
innovation. Because leadership and innovation are central to creating value
in the global economy, these abilities will offer you a career advantage.
Leading Through Innovation is definitely not just about technology – although
this is an important aspect of innovation, and the Haas School and UC
Berkeley have long been recognized for their strengths in the technology
area. It is also about thinking of innovation from a strategic and
organizational perspective.
The Haas School has a culture where fresh thinking is encouraged and
supported, and where leadership is expected. For example, Haas was one
of the first business schools to pioneer cross-disciplinary study of product
design via the elective Managing the New Product Development Process. This
elective, which has been taught by Senior Lecturer Sarah Beckman for more
than a decade, was among similar offerings that prompted BusinessWeek to
name Haas as one of the top design schools in the world in October 2006.
The culture of innovation here is continually enriched by a faculty of
innovators who study at the frontiers of knowledge, and bring their insights
into the classroom. And the Haas School has a history of students and
alumni who have changed organizations by leading through innovation.
In fact, a key school goal is to develop new generations of business leaders
who succeed because of their ability to build and manage organizations
where innovation flourishes.
The Berkeley MBA Program also has a tradition of creatively linking
exceptional programs and courses across disciplines at UC Berkeley. If
you take courses in the Management of Technology Program, for instance,
you interact with students and professors drawn from the schools of
business, engineering, and information.
Finally, the program is located in an innovation ecosystem that is unequaled
anywhere in the world – the San Francisco Bay Area, which includes Silicon
Valley. Innovation is a huge part of the ethos in the area, and you will feel it
every day at Haas.
“Bringing new ideas and a new approach to the
table adds value. That is central to innovation,
and it is what Haas has helped me learn to do,”
says Alexis Green. Two of her experiences at
Haas crystallize the school’s Leading Through
Innovation mindset.
Green was on the implementation team for
Haas@Work, a semester-long project that
started with a daylong workshop that brought
together Haas students and employees at a
leading online travel firm. “We brainstormed
business ideas from acquisition strategies to
risk management to upselling opportunities,”
Green recalls. “At the end of the day, we
presented our ideas to the company’s executive
board, including the CEO, CMO and VP of
Merchandising.” Green was on the team of
six students selected to explore whether
marketing strategies and tactics – beyond price –
could affect customer conversion. “Some of
our recommendations are on-line now as part
of a pilot plan. Being able to see the results of
our work was one of the great things about
Haas@Work.”
Green also saw results – and got to practice
her Spanish – when she worked with a nongovernmental
organization in El Salvador as
a part of the International Business
Development program. “We were the first
Haas team to go to El Salvador. Our assignment
was to develop a strategic growth plan the
NGO could use to increase the number of
coffee farms in El Salvador obtaining the
Rainforest Alliance certification seal. We
identified missing information and ways for
the NGO to align itself better in the process.”
Another Haas team will return this summer
working on a new project for the organization.
Throughout her time at Haas, Green has
been impressed with her classmates’ “openmindedness
about trying things. My classmates
really made the Haas experience for me.
Everyone is willing to get down and dirty.
There is no feeling of pretentiousness or sense
of entitlement. People are incredibly bright,
passionate, and inspiring.”
“These two years in the Berkeley MBA Program
are an opportunity for me to take a long look
at myself and determine where and how I can
make a difference – to grow as a person and
as a leader. Haas is helping with that search,
and is giving me the tools I will need to have
the impact I want. Being involved with Peers@
Haas and co-leading the Bio-Entrepreneurship
Roundtable really has stretched me.”
“All business schools are about creating
leaders. The Haas way is so much more holistic.
Instead of having a narrow view of their world,
my classmates see connections everywhere.”
Leading Through Innovation in the Berkeley MBA Program
represents a challenging set of educational experiences
that take advantage of the school’s culture of leadership
and innovation. The lessons begin in MBA orientation, with an
exploration of the innovation process. They continue into the core MBA
curriculum, which covers the foundation of management and business, with
an emphasis on leadership development.
A cutting-edge, required leadership course will develop your capacity to
lead others by giving you an in-depth understanding of your own capabilities,
based on 360-degree evaluations from past managers, co-workers, peers,
and clients. You will also participate in experiential leadership exercises,
read the latest advances in our understanding of leadership, and discuss
cases offered by top leaders of organizations. By the end of the course, you
will develop a customized plan to elevate your own leadership potential by
improving such skills as fostering creativity and mastering a flexible set of
leadership styles.
And when the Leadership course concludes, you have the option of joining
a structured, peer-coaching program designed to make you an even more
effective leader of innovation. Called Peers@Haas and part of the Leading
Through Innovation initiative, it starts by having you identify one specific
behavior that you want to change, and then ask fellow students, alumni, and
others to judge your progress toward improvement over the next 11 months.
Students work together with a partner, and also meet with six-member
coaching groups monthly.
Leading Through Innovation is supported by a series of experiential programs
and executive skills seminars. Key among them is Haas@Work, a successful
applied innovation program that sends teams of Berkeley MBA students
to work with top executives at a local firm. In the program, you research a
competitive challenge posed by the firm and develop potential innovative
solutions during a one-day, on-site workshop. The best ideas are selected
by the executives, and a core student team is then chosen to implement the
strongest solution at the firm.
A series of optional executive skills courses also helps you fine-tune your
leadership abilities. Recent speakers have included Srikumar Rao of
Columbia University, who taught students how to manage ambiguity and
uncertainty, and to focus on challenging the status quo in the pursuit of
dreams. Marshall Goldsmith, acclaimed author on effective leadership,
prepared students to be effective peer coaches in leadership.
Finally, you can master Leading Through Innovation by taking a series of
cutting-edge elective courses, such as Creativity and Innovation in Marketing,
in which the goal is to enhance your ability to generate creative ideas, and
not merely to evaluate ideas of others, as is true of more traditional courses.
Managing Innovation and Change draws from economic, organizational, and
engineering perspectives to identify the sources of innovation inside
corporations.
Johns Hopkins University
Job prior to Haas:
During his time at Haas, Dank has “actively
sought out any experience with the word
‘leadership’ attached to it – implicitly or
explicitly.” He found no shortage of opportunities:
He served as the MBA Association
president and co-founded the Leadership
Club. He also worked as a graduate student
instructor in the Leadership and
Leadership Communications classes.
“Students should know from their first day
here that questioning and challenging the
status quo is how Haas does business,”
says Dank. “Sustaining any cultural
movement in a place with as transient a
population as a business school is tough.
What Haas is doing is creating a culture
among not just the students, but among the
faculty and administration that recognizes
and rewards innovation year after year.
That is leadership.”
One of Dank’s most innovative – and
impactful – experiences has been Peers@
Haas, a leadership coaching program for
students. “It taught me how to ask for
feedback, acknowledge it, and incorporate
it into my life,” he says. “Haas is creating
a feedback culture. That’s something
that will have lasting effect on me and
on my approach to the people I’ll be
working with.”
Dank describes his classmates as “shockingly
well-rounded.” And while he admits
that his decidedly liberal arts academic
background occasionally put him at a disadvantage,
the collaborative nature of his
coursework taught him to recognize and
draw on the individual strengths of his
peers. Dank learned “not to get in the way
of the spreadsheet wizards” in his study
group and they came to rely on his ability to
express himself – and his team – using the
written word.
“Being at Haas is about preparing yourself
to act on your passion,” he says. “Haas is
a place where you can test and clarify your
wildest ideas and bring them to fruition.”
Learning Beyond the Classroom
Jenna Feldman
BA (Honors), Business Administration
University of Western Ontario, Canada
Job prior to Haas:
In 2006, Jenna Feldman was one of six
Haas CSR Fellows invited by McDonald’s
Corp. to look at its beef supply chain from
every angle: the environmental issues, animal
welfare, and labor and social concerns.
The team visited ranches, feedlots, and processing
plants, and had access to corporate
executives. The results of their analysis can
be read in McDonald’s worldwide corporate
responsibility report, posted on the firms’
web site. “McDonald’s had been wrestling
with these issues for a long time, so a lot
of our findings weren’t new to them. But I
have to give them credit for taking a chance
and opening their doors to us,” she says.
It wouldn’t have happened, Feldman says,
without Adjunct Assistant Professor Kellie
McElhaney, executive director of the Center
for Responsible Business at Haas. “Kellie
took a risk herself, that McDonald’s would
be open to the idea. She encouraged us
every step of the way.”
Feldman’s CSR Fellowship, which required
10 to 15 hours of work a week, complemented
her regular coursework. “It was
a terrific opportunity to see first-hand the
intersection of corporate responsibility
and the bottom line.”
Feldman is applying what she learned on
the job at Origo, Inc., a consulting firm that
helps businesses create environmental and
social value along with profit. “The issues
are so complex. There are so many moving
parts. You need broad thinking and collaboration
to arrive at solutions that will work
across the system,” she says.
That’s the kind of thinking she encountered
among her Haas classmates. “They
constantly surprised and impressed me,”
she says. “A new skill or expertise would
emerge whenever it was needed. Each of
us took the lead when our strengths were
needed to solve a problem.”
The Berkeley MBA program is immeasurably enriched by a
large array of innovative courses that combine classroom
learning with hands-on exposure to real-world business
situations. In addition, the program offers you numerous opportunities to
get involved in field activities that make use of the knowledge and skills you
have mastered in your coursework.
Over 50 percent of full-time Berkeley MBA electives make use of hands-on
projects. This almost always means team projects – an important aspect
of experiential learning. For example, teams of Berkeley MBA students work
directly with firms such as Hewlett-Packard, Gap Inc., Ford Motor Co., and
McDonalds Corp. in a corporate responsibility course. One of the past teams
spent fifteen weeks conducting a third-party assurance of Intel’s corporate
social responsibility report, which was highlighted on the company’s web site.
International Business Development (IBD) is one of the Haas School’s most
heralded experiential electives. Each summer it sends 70 Berkeley
MBA students to work in small teams with a variety of clients for three
weeks on consulting projects in various countries. One team recently worked
in the jungles of Borneo, Indonesia, helping farmers to set up a viable
business co-op that will allow them to pool the rattan they harvest and
sell it to furniture manufacturers at a reasonable profit. In Zambia, Africa,
an IBD team conducted market research for products designed by the
Wildlife Conservation Society to promote sustainable agriculture and end
animal poaching.
Beyond the course-related field activities are a plethora of projects, studentorganized
conferences, case and business plan competitions, and numerous
special events that challenge Berkeley MBA students to put their learning to
work right away in innovative ways. The Haas@Work project last November
sent nearly 50 Berkeley MBA students to consult on a key business issue with
top executives at a large online travel agency in the Bay Area. “Innovation is
about fresh ideas being put to work, and Haas@Work is about applied
innovation,” says Adam Berman, executive director of curriculum innovation.
An innovative research fellowship sends teams of MBA students and other
Berkeley graduate students overseas on projects, such as one to create solarpowered
lighting systems in rural China, and another to extend microfinance
loans in Uganda. The activities are part of a collaborative effort between
the United Nations Industrial Development Organization and UC Berkeley’s
Management of Technology Program that focuses on researching sustainable
solutions for economic development in developing countries. Student teams
spend at least three weeks abroad conducting field research, which is
published in a journal and later presented at a UN-sponsored conference held
at the Haas School.
“As we were packing, my wife told herself that
it would only be for two years. Then we could
come home,” recalls Carlos Penzini “Within a
couple of weeks of our arrival at Berkeley, we
knew we could happily stay here forever.”
“I have been following Silicon Valley on
the news and in magazines ever since my
childhood. This is where the action is,” says
Penzini. “I knew I had to be here.” But what
sort of place would it be for his wife, Andrea,
and son, Carlos Eduardo? They would have to
make a life in a new setting, with a different
culture, and do it all in a foreign language.
And, they would have to do it without the
support of family.
The Haas support system for international
students and students with families provided
plenty of tips and recommendations. “My wife
is active in the Partners Club, and Haas Kids is
great for my son. As first-year students, most
of us were new to the area, so we made friends
quickly,” he says.
Penzini and his family revel in the cultural
offerings available at Berkeley. Trading
babysitting with Haas classmates, they
have enjoyed world-class performers at the
Zellerbach Auditorium on campus. “We go to
the Lawrence Hall of Science at least once a
month,” he says, marveling at the proximity to
so much Nobel Prize-winning innovation.
Now expecting their second child, the family is
putting down roots in the place Penzini continues
to believe is “the epicenter of innovation.”
The Berkeley Experience
In addition to attending one of the premier
business schools in the world, Haas students
join the larger community at one of the most esteemed
universities. The mission of the University of California
is to excel in research, teaching, and public service.
Over the decades, this mission has developed a culture
at UC Berkeley that stimulates greatness.
UC Berkeley’s global flavor and close proximity to
Silicon Valley and downtown San Francisco – the
finance capital of the West Coast – provide unmatched
opportunities. The Haas School encourages you to take
Berkeley, whose graduate programs are consistently
ranked among the best in the world, and whose
undergraduate programs are among the most selective.
The proof is in the university’s distinguished record of Nobel-level
scholarship, constant innovation, a concern for the betterment of our world,
and consistently high rankings of its schools and departments – the Haas
School among them.
You are encouraged to supplement
business courses with graduate
classes outside the business school
in areas ranging from engineering,
law, and urban planning to foreign
languages, international area studies,
and public policy. In addition, special
interdisciplinary opportunities within
the Berkeley community – such as
the widely popular Management of
Technology Program – enable you to
learn from top experts in almost every
field. Joint courses with students
in law, engineering, information
systems, and public health enhance
the educational experience of many
MBA students.
Since its founding in 1868, UC
Berkeley has grown with the rapidly
expanding population of California
and responded to the educational
needs of the developing state. The
business school was founded in 1898,
Creative, resourceful, intelligent, energetic, entrepreneurial,
motivated to make things happen, and above all, confident
without attitude – all of these are hallmarks of the
Berkeley MBA student.
Student leadership is a defining aspect of the Berkeley MBA culture, and
leadership abilities are among the key attributes of its students. Whether
they are creating student-initiated elective classes in the MBA curriculum or
launching school-wide events, students regularly lead the way in shaping the
Full-time MBA Program. This high level of innovation and involvement helps
the school to stay attuned to the emerging interests and needs of students,
and to evolving trends in the marketplace.
The highly selective Berkeley MBA program attracts individuals who have
solid academic backgrounds and test scores confirming they possess the
intellectual capacity and stamina to meet the challenges of the academically
demanding program. They also arrive having already distinguished
themselves in their previous work experience, as well as in community
activities and other outside endeavors.
While the Berkeley MBA program is dedicated to teaching you about business
and the creation of opportunity, it also offers lessons in the importance of
sharing opportunities that come from business success. Arun Sarin, Berkeley
MBA 78 and CEO of Vodafone, describes Haas graduates as “leaders with
heart.” He believes this captures the essence of Berkeley MBAs: innovative
leaders concerned about leaving the world a better place.
The friendly enthusiasm of Berkeley MBA students is most evident in
how they interact with one another. Teamwork is at the heart of the Haas
experience, and students quickly recognize the value of working closely with
and learning from fellow classmates. Coursework and programs like Peers@
Haas actively train students to improve their own skills by helping others
become stronger business leaders.
Diversity is essential for innovation and a key strength of the Berkeley
MBA program. Students represent a wide range of ethnic backgrounds,
religious affiliations, and sexual orientations. About a third of the students
are from outside the United States, representing more than 40 countries.
The academic backgrounds of students vary widely, ranging from science
and engineering to economics and fine arts. Professional experience
and outside activities are astonishing in their breadth. The Haas School’s
Standing Committee on Diversity is dedicated to ensuring that Haas fosters
a welcoming environment for students from all backgrounds.
willing to help others. We believe
in ourselves, but we believe in each
Cheung’s dream is to work for a nonprofit
environment. Energy – in particular
the potential of alternative energy
goals. Her role on the leadership team
of the Berkeley Energy and Resource
Her involvement with BERC often
intersects with her work for the Net
Cheung explains. An example
is the recent on-campus screening of
Studying for an undergraduate degree in
philosophy isn’t all that different from an
MBA, says Carolyn Herzog: “Both require
you to read a lot, to break down an argument
or a proposal and then to rebuild it.
What made so many of my Haas classes
great was that they forced me to come up
with my own ideas and my own solutions.”
“For instance, the core class in
Entrepreneurship was one of the best I
took at Haas. Writing a business plan and
having it torn apart by a real venture capitalist
taught me how to look at business
strategies from A to Z.”
At Haas, Herzog says “students learn
by doing, whether that means reviewing
100 business plans in the Venture Capital
class or questioning Haas alumni about
their approaches to financial modeling
at workshops sponsored by the Finance
Club.” Her involvement with the Finance
Club, including a year as its president, was
“a super way to network and connect with
practitioners in the real world.”
A self-described “bond geek,” Herzog is
now a fixed income investment analyst at
Capital Research, one of The Capital Group
Companies. “I’ll be analyzing companies
based on pretty limited information, mostly
what the company wants you to know.
It’s important not to rely solely on facts
and theories, but to make use of everything
that you have available. Haas gave
me the tools to do that.”
When the world’s most selective
organizations seek new talent, they
turn to Haas. The school’s key location and
deep ties to global firms will provide you with
the tools and connections you need to launch the
next stage of your career.
Prestigious investment banks, consulting
firms, and technology companies are among
those firms that hire Haas graduates as
interns and full-time employees. Employers
seek out Berkeley MBA students because they
demonstrate not only a mastery of powerful
quantitative and management tools, but also
a solid understanding of best practices for the
changing technological, global, and human
dimensions of business. Because organizations
recognize the value of innovative leaders, Haas
is widely recognized as one of the most desirable
schools at which to recruit.
Whether you aspire to direct the marketing
efforts of a Fortune 500 company, manage a
hedge fund on Wall Street, or lead a technology
startup to new heights of success, the Berkeley
MBA helps put new career opportunities
squarely within your grasp.
The Haas School provides you with access to employers through multiple
forums for presenting oneself to a prospective employer. Last year, MBA
Career Services facilitated hundreds of on-campus interview opportunities
specifically targeting Berkeley MBA students. In addition, you are given the
ways, including industry firm nights, career panels, corporate visits, alumni
mixers and job fairs.
If your career goal is to work for a firm or industry that doesn’t recruit on
for a customized job search. The school’s small MBA class size allows career
The goal of the Chetkovich Career Center is to provide you with resources
The Center plans workshops, panels, networking events and receptions
While you are in the Berkeley MBA program, you will learn
how to manage a successful career and prepare yourself
to secure the job you want after graduation.
You may have well-defined career goals when you arrive at Haas, or you may
want to test the waters using elective courses, club activities, and summer
internships. One of the many roles of the Chetkovich Career Center is to
assist you in thinking strategically about your career objectives, to offer you a
structured approach to tackling today’s job market.
As a first-year Berkeley MBA student, you will accelerate your preparations
for the job search process during an intensive, two-day Career Management
Conference in the fall. The purpose of the conference is to educate you on how
to pursue a job successfully and how to set and manage career objectives now
and in the future. “The conference is proof of how seriously we take the subject
of careers for our students,” says Abby Scott, Career Center executive director.
“The regular first year MBA curriculum stops completely for two full days so
that students can focus on mastering the career search process.”
The Career Services Office also sponsors a variety of other programs, such as
the Practitioner Training series, where professionals from firms such as JP
Morgan, Goldman Sachs & Co., Bain, and McKinsey & Co. are invited into the
classroom to train Berkeley MBA students how to apply their classroom skills
to the real world. Haas’ Expert Practical Training Premium programs bring
outside groups such as Training the Street and Corporate Scenes to Haas for
1-2 day seminars and workshops. Students interested in real estate careers
have the opportunity to be partnered with a practicing professional through
the school’s Analyzing Careers in Real Estate program.
The Career Center also offers counseling services at all stages of the
career planning process. The career advising staff consists of professional
counselors and second-year career coaches who together offer a broad range
of training and business management experience.
Four senior-level account managers, each with different areas of industry
expertise, manage thousands of on-campus interviews, hundreds of
relationships with companies, and numerous career fairs and networking
receptions. They also monitor a web-based job posting service that provides
you with hundreds of targeted job postings each year. The Center also
has an account manager based in New York City, focused on maximizing
opportunities for Berkeley MBA students with financial services and other
firms on the East Coast.
The Center organizes special visits by Berkeley MBA students to finance and
high technology firms. You can visit Wall Street finance firms in New York, or
travel on a “Tech Trek” to nearby Silicon Valley to learn about employment
opportunities at firms such as Google, Yahoo!, BEA, and Electronic Arts.
The school’s new, state-of-the-art student careers website, CareerNet,
“I wanted a business school with a great finance
program and a broader outlook, and the general
management program at Haas offers just the right
blend. The finance courses and faculty are top
grade, and the varied interests and backgrounds
of students enrich the learning environment. The
decision to come to Haas was undoubtedly the best
career decision for me.”
“The hidden entrepreneur in every student is
challenged and nourished. Class exercises and
cases helped me build confidence to solve real-life
problems. I feel well equipped to apply all the tools
learned at Haas in my career.”
Your Haas education is anchored in the fundamentals
of management and the latest theories and best
practices in business.
You will experience a rigorous, comprehensive curriculum in which you master
the essential skills of management and leadership, from accounting and
finance to marketing and strategy. You build a basic framework in qualitative,
analytical, strategic, and problem solving skills. The innovative nature of the
Berkeley MBA program also provides a level of flexibility that enables you to
customize your path of study according to your goals and ambitions.
Top-ranked Specialties
In 2007, U.S. News & World Report
ranked the followingHaas School areas
of study in the top ten nationally:
• Entrepreneurship
• Finance
• International Management
• Marketing
• Nonprofit
All Haas School courses are rooted
in the scientific disciplines of the
university – economics, mathematics,
social sciences such as psychology
and sociology, and other areas. Faculty
members who are experts in these
fields apply them toward increasing
our knowledge of successful
management, leadership, human
behavior, how organizations work,
and how the economy and markets
function. As a result, you not only gain knowledge about best business
practices, but also learn about the fundamental principles behind them – the
“how” and the “why.” The Berkeley MBA program is for individuals who like to
think deeply and expand their understanding of the world.
The Berkeley MBA curriculum consists of 12 required core courses that
provide the analytical tools and essential knowledge to lead effectively. The
core courses, which make up about 40 percent of a typical student’s course of
study, are all taken in the first year and are deliberately designed to build upon
one another. In nearly every core course, faculty members make significant
use of team assignments and projects where students work together in small
groups to learn.
A central component of the Berkeley MBA program is its impressive menu
of original elective courses, which comprise 60 percent of the curriculum,
meaning you begin to customize your own course of study in the first year of
the program. You may choose from a wide variety of electives and dual degree
offerings – from within the Haas School and from the wider university – as
well as design courses of your own in conjunction with a faculty member.
Global experience is an increasingly integral aspect of the Berkeley
MBA experience. You are encouraged to take advantage of international
opportunities, such as spending a semester abroad, attending international
seminars, planning study trips to other countries during breaks, or serving as
a consultant through the International Business Development program, which
places students with companies around the world for three-week projects.
Two years at Haas gave Santiago
Campero just what he was looking for:
“a top-notch education that will prepare
me to make good business decisions.”
Before coming to Haas, Campero could
follow discussions of management
issues; now he can lead them. “There is
more depth to my reasoning. I don’t have
to rely on intuition. Instead, I have knowledge,”
he says.
Two classes stand out for Campero.
Deals, taught by Professor Rui de
Figueiredo, looked at ways to structure
transactions to meet business objectives.
“This course provided an insightful perspective
into the economic forces at play
in many business transactions,” Campero
says. Behavioral Finance with Professor
Terrance Odean, he says, “complemented
the ‘rational actor’ perspective taught in
other economics classes. We studied how
people’s behavior routinely deviates from
rationality and how behavioral biases
influence financial markets.”
”My professors were very good at making
me question conventional wisdom and
the implicit assumptions you encounter
every day in the business world.”
Opportunity Recognition: Technology
& Entrepreneurship in Silicon Valley.
The Haas School’s proximity to Silicon
Valley strengthens its connections
to the high-tech community. Faculty
members frequently invite local
executives to be guest lecturers in
their courses and to partner with
them in research projects. Student
groups host special events, such as
the daylong Berkeley Nanotechnology
Forum, and organize career-oriented
activities with local firms.
Most Popular Program
The Haas School offers a
technology specialization through
its Management of Technology
(MOT) program. The program, which
focuses on the set of management
activities associated with bringing
high-tech products to market, is a
joint effort of the Haas School, the
College of Engineering, and the
School of Information.
MOT has also become the most
popular interdisciplinary program
on the campus because it has
successfully integrated business and
technology education in classes that
bring MBA students and engineering
students together. Numerous
Silicon Valley firms sponsor MOT
projects every year in which teams
of MBA and engineering students
act as project consultants. Three
MOT fellowship programs offer paid
opportunities to about 25 students
each year.
Interdisciplinary Collaboration
A graduate of Haas’ Management of
Technology Program (MOT), Sabrina Ko,
MBA 07, was naturally drawn to the fast
pace of entrepreneurship in the technology
sector. “Berkeley is one of only a few
universities whose graduate programs
in both engineering and business rank in
the top 10,” she notes. “The collaboration
between the schools fosters new ideas
and innovation. Students from the other
disciplines bring different experiences and
perspectives to every subject.”
The San Francisco Bay Area
has long been a hotbed for
new business creation, and
the Haas School remains a leading
center for the study and practice
of entrepreneurship. The Berkeley
MBA program offers its students the
skills and knowledge to launch fastgrowth,
high-potential enterprises
and teaches them how to start
careers in the venture capital
industry. Some Haas students begin
their own firms even while in school
or launch startups immediately after
graduation.
One of the first business schools in
the nation to offer entrepreneurship
courses, the Haas School emphasizes
the integration of academic learning
with experiential learning by
bringing leading members of the
entrepreneurial and venture capital
communities into the classroom.
At the center of these activities is
the highly ranked Lester Center for
Entrepreneurship and Innovation,
which focuses on the recognition and
capture of opportunities wherever
they arise.
Among the activities of the
Lester Center are two prominent
Haas School, drew a record 157 teams
from 80 universities in 20 countries.
business leaders. Just off campus
is the Haas-affiliated Berkeley
Entrepreneurship Laboratory, a
business incubator which has room
for up to eight startups launched
by Haas students or alumni. The
Entrepreneurs Association, whose
membership includes almost half
the MBA class, organizes activities
including internships at nearby highgrowth
startups.
Consistently ranked among the
nation’s top three programs,
the Real Estate Program at the
Haas School combines a strong
analytical focus with hands-on field
experience. It prepares students for a
broad range of career paths with
firms such as real estate investment
trusts, real estate operating
companies, developers, financial
institutions, investment banks, and
consulting companies.
Students focus on four areas
– real estate financial analysis, real
estate finance and securitization,
real estate development, and real
estate investment strategy. Real
estate courses in the Berkeley MBA
program combine lectures and case
methods, student-initiated projects,
and in-class work with leading real
estate professionals. Students can
further develop their professional
skills through internships, a CEO
mentoring program, participation
in the Real Estate Club, our new
real estate career development
program, ACRE, and extramural
real estate development and finance
competitions.
A nationally recognized real estate
research program at the Haas
School ensures that the latest ideas
and knowledge infuse the MBA
courses. Courses offered in the field
include Real Estate Finance and
Leading Expertise
Global Management:
The World is the
Classroom
Three teams of Berkeley MBA
students traveled to Ghana,
Africa to help implement
and expand a nationwide school
lunch program that uses locally
grown food, thus nourishing kids
while boosting the local economy.
Meanwhile another team worked
with Nokia’s Research Center
in Tampere, Finland to develop
commercial applications for
new mobile technologies, while
yet another team advised the
government of Macedonia on a
national IT strategy.
With the continuing globalization
of the economy, the need to think
and compete internationally has
become imperative. Nothing could
be more illustrative of this point
than the 72 students on 18 teams
who were part of the Haas School’s
acclaimed International Business
Development (IBD) program in 2007.
IBD sends dozens of students around
the world to consult for a variety of
organizations each year under the
direction of Sebastian Teunissen,
executive director of the Clausen
Center for International Business
and Policy.
IBD clients range from large
multinationals to nonprofit
organizations. During the first part
of the year, student teams prepare a
work plan in consultation with their
client and undertake background
research and analysis while
attending classes on related topics.
From mid-May to mid-June, teams
spend three weeks on location in
their assigned country. Upon return
to the Haas School, they carry out
additional research to complete
the assignment and present their
work to the Haas community in the
International Business Development
Conference.
Berkeley MBA students who want
to emphasize global business may
also take a series of international
courses, including international
seminars focusing on different
regions of the world, to obtain a
Certificate in Global Management.
The international emphasis of the
Haas School is an integral part of
its culture. Many Berkeley MBA
students have lived, studied, or
worked abroad, and over 30% of
Berkeley MBA students come from
more than 40 countries outside the
United States. Many faculty, too, are
either originally from other countries,
or have extensive international
experience and contacts. The impact
of this international diversity on the
MBA program is enormous, adding
varied perspectives to classroom
discussions, team projects, and
everyday interactions.
International
Consulting Project
As part of the International
Business Development
program, Berkeley MBA
students, including Dan
Brounstein (pictured), MBA 07,
traveled to Ghana to
improve the sustainability
of a school lunch program.
Preparing Leaders
for the Healthcare
Industry
The Haas School of Business
and the UC Berkeley School
of Public Health have teamed
up to prepare the next generation
of management leaders in the
healthcare industry. Because of
its location in the Bay Area, the
program leverages California’s
cutting-edge managed care, Internet,
and biotechnology industries as
laboratories for education and
research. The program offers a joint
MBA/MPH (Masters in Public Health)
degree program, and a Certificate in
Health Management.
The program is taught by leading
UC Berkeley academic researchers
from both the business and public
health schools, as well as prominent
industry practitioners. Faculty
members actively engage in applied
research that both broadens the
educational experience and expands
the state of knowledge about how
the health services system works.
Partnerships with industry are an
essential aspect of the program.
Faculty conduct research on
physician organizations and
management of chronic illness,
improving quality of care through
changes in technology and provider
payment incentives, expansion of
health insurance coverage, and
models for financing health care
for the poor both in the US and
internationally.
An active student club, Haas
Healthcare and BioBusiness
(H2B2) educates students on the
multi-faceted nature of healthcare
and biotechnology, and connects
them with industry alumni and
professionals, as well as to students
Symptoms of Success
As a student in the MBA/MPH program,
Laronne Faulkner, MBA 08, appreciates
the personalized support he receives
from both the Haas School and
the School of Public Health. “The
two programs are seamlessly and
thoroughly integrated,” he says. “The
rigor of the program is outstanding.
That benefits both students with
a business background and those
with mostly healthcare experience.
Everyone comes in with a different
level of understanding, and through
the core curriculum, everyone leaves
with an equal level of knowledge.”
from other associations and schools.
In 2007, students in the program
launched the first annual Business
of Health Care Conference, which
attracted more than 350 participants.
“The current challenges in
healthcare provide an opportunity for
leaders who understand the various
components of the industry, patterns
of disease, and the healthcare
technology explosion,” says Kristiana
Raube, adjunct professor and
executive director of the program.
Graduates of the Health
Management Program typically
receive multiple job offers from
consulting firms, health insurance
plans, managed care organizations,
and pharmaceutical, biotechnology,
medical device, and diagnostic firms.
A Catalyst for
Corporate
Responsibility
The Haas School’s long
tradition of exploring and
teaching the ethical and
social responsibilities of business
is headquartered in the Center
for Responsible Business. Topics
such as strategic corporate social
responsibility, social enterprise,
stakeholder engagement, and
business ethics are explored in
a robust series of programs and
through research, teaching, and
experiential learning projects.
In the core curriculum, all Berkeley
MBAs are exposed to the complex
issues of a corporation’s role and
responsibility to society beyond
simply maximizing shareholder
value. Additional concentrated study
is available through elective courses,
including an innovative strategic
corporate social responsibility (CSR)
projects course in which student
teams work directly with major
firms on strategic, high impact CSR
projects. For example, one team
helped Fetzer Vineyards assess the
public perception of sustainability
practices in the wine industry
and developed a comprehensive
communications strategy based on
their findings. Another team helped
Nokia create a product-oriented
strategy for its China CSR initiatives
in the areas of Environment and
Youth Development.
The Center hosts the thoughtprovoking
Peterson Lecture Series,
which brings top industry speakers,
such as Altria’s Chief Compliance
Officer, the whistleblower from
Enron, and the CEO of Clif Bar,
to address corporate social
responsibility topics. With the Gap
Inc. CSR Scholars program, the
Center provides support to full-time
MBA students who demonstrate
a commitment to the CSR field in
their professional and educational
pursuits. Berkeley MBA students
are very active in this area, including
fielding one of the nation’s largest
Net Impact Clubs, which aims to
develop and inspire a network of
leaders who promote innovative and
socially responsible practices that
succeed in the global marketplace.
Responsible Leader
Kellie A. McElhaney, Adjunct Assistant
Professor and John C. Whitehead
of MBA programs, for her innovative
academic leadership in the corporate
Explorers in Search of New Ideas
Haas School faculty members are explorers and
discoverers, seeking new ideas and insights at the
frontiers of knowledge. They are internationally recognized leaders in
the study of the economic, social, political, and technological forces shaping
global markets today.
At the Leading Edge of Marketing
The Haas School is among a handful of
business schools to offer a class on data-driven
marketing. Florian Zettelmeyer, (above) an
associate marketing professor, designed the
Information- and Technology-based Marketing
class to teach Berkeley MBA students how to
skillfully deal with the flood of customer
information that has inundated firms as a
result of advances in technology.
Haas faculty play an active role in the national
and international business communities, serving
as consultants, board members, and speakers at
major business conferences and seminars. They are
in demand for key government positions, and they
perform important interdisciplinary research with
colleagues at Berkeley and at other top universities
around the world. Rankings of academic reputation
consistently place the Haas faculty in the top ten of
business schools worldwide.
In their search for new knowledge, Haas School
professors go far beyond merely describing a
management or business problem and its resolution.
As members of a premier research university, Haas
scholars seek the deeper answers to why things
happen the way they do. They develop theoretical
explanations in order to understand and predict
future occurrences. These are among the tools
that eventually help executives navigate confidently
through even the most turbulent, changing times.
Several faculty members are authors of widely
used textbooks in marketing, economics, and
management. Severin Borenstein is a nearly
constant presence in the national media explaining
the ups and downs of the nation’s energy markets.
Hayne Leland and Mark Rubinstein are among the
world’s most knowledgeable securities experts.
Michael Katz is a leading thinker and strategist in
puzzling experience. The course challenges
students to formulate strategy by learning to
forecast the reactions of rivals.
“My teaching style is conversational, exploratory,
and interactive,” says Morgan, whose in-class
experiments call upon students to develop strategies
for everyone from OPEC nations to NBA
teams. He has found that students respond to
the interactivity of his classes, as well as the
accountability: Answer a question in class and a
follow-up “Why?” from Morgan is sure to follow.
This enthusiasm for inquiry has led to Morgan’s
role as a founding director of Xlab, UC
and to research such as his work on eBay auction
newfound knowledge of game theory, strategy,
With explorations that have ranged from
Google’s IPO auction to the pros and cons of
“I have been teaching the core accounting
course for the last ten years, and
have thoroughly enjoyed my teaching
experience. Berkeley MBA students
bring diverse work experience and
strong enthusiasm for learning, which
create a great deal of excitement and
energy in the classroom.”
The cornerstone of the entire Berkeley MBA program is its
distinguished faculty and the high quality of their courses.
At Haas, good teaching is the top priority.
The best proof of this is from Berkeley MBA students themselves, who are
asked to evaluate the teaching of their professors every semester. Over the
past several years, about two-thirds of the Haas School faculty members
have regularly earned coveted “Club 6” status in their student evaluations
– that is, their average ratings are 6 or higher on a 7-point scale.
In the Berkeley MBA classroom, faculty members emphasize both theory
and practice by using a variety of teaching methods. Case studies, seminars,
simulations, guest speakers, and group projects all facilitate the learning
process. Classroom learning is enhanced by numerous opportunities to apply
the lessons to real-world situations. For example, some courses in marketing
and entrepreneurship place teams of MBA and graduate engineering
students together at Silicon Valley firms for hands-on consulting projects.
The MBA program also makes creative use of experienced practitioners from
industry in its classes as adjunct professors and lecturers. For example, Wall
Street veteran Peter Goodson, former partner of private equity firm Clayton &
Dubilier, Inc., teaches the Mergers & Acquisitions course.
Haas professors regularly integrate their research findings into new course
offerings and reassess the MBA curriculum to ensure its relevance in
presenting current management issues. In their courses, Berkeley MBA
students benefit by being among the first to learn of faculty discoveries and
by studying first-hand with the inventors of new theories and principles for
management practice.
Since 1898, Berkeley’s business school faculty members have played a
strong role in state and federal government affairs. Faculty members who
have worked in government in recent years include Michael Katz, who was
deputy assistant attorney general for economic analysis in the Antitrust
Division of the Department of Justice, and former chief economist at the
Federal Communications Commission. Carl Shapiro also served as the
chief economist for antitrust in the Justice Department. Laura Tyson served
as President Clinton’s chair of the National Economic Council. And James
Wilcox served as the chief economist at the Office of the Comptroller of
Currency. David Levine was senior economist on the Council of Economic
Advisers, and Dean Tom Campbell was a US Congressman for five terms,
a California State Senator for one term, and recently served as director of
finance for the State of California.
If you put her life on a spreadsheet,
Millicent Anglin admits that she is running
a deficit in the “free time” column. But
that’s just fine with her. When she isn’t
immersed in coursework and activities
related to her real estate program
studies, Anglin can be found working with
several student-run organizations.
“Being on the UT Austin Real Estate
Challenge team was a great way to meet
people and an opportunity to wrestle with
a practical problem in the area that interests
me. It was a nice complement to the
academic frameworks we discuss in firstyear
classes,” she says.
Anglin is co-president of the Black
Business Students Association and
focuses her extracurricular efforts on
giving back to the Haas community, particularly
in the area of diversity. “I want to
increase the number of students at Haas
from diverse backgrounds and am active
in a variety of outreach events including
the Diversity Conference and the Admit
Weekends. These are great opportunities
to engage people and use my time in ways
that are most important to me and have
the most impact on the school.”
Haas and its resources have already had
a direct impact on Anglin. She credits the
Chetkovich Career Center, through oncampus
interviews and the Accelerated
Careers in Real Estate program, for
expanding her exposure to Bay Area
real estate professionals. The Berkeley
Real Estate Club and the San Francisco
chapter of the Urban Land Institute also
“opened doors and shined a light on current
trends and challenges in the real
estate industry.”
At Haas, teamwork and collaboration yield great
rewards. Students are members of a close-knit, supportive peer
network that draws on both shared experiences and a diversity of ideas and
backgrounds to build bonds that last a lifetime.
The Haas School is home to a fascinating, vibrant community marked
by a nonstop schedule of activities developed by and for students.
The reason for this has to do with the personalities of the students
themselves. Berkeley MBA students frequently speak of a welcoming
atmosphere that encourages involvement.
Among the school’s greatest assets is the community of fellow students, who
form a lifetime network of friends and professional contacts. The relatively
small size of the MBA program (only 240 students enroll in each entering
class) permits students to get to know all members of their class.
As a complement to their coursework, students get involved in clubs and
community service. They organize major conferences, put together panels of
executives, and assemble ski trips to nearby Sierra Nevada resorts. Students
take advantage of the university’s wide range of public lectures, exhibitions,
concerts, and conferences. Consumption Functions bring together the whole
school for food, fun, and camaraderie.
UC Berkeley has a long tradition of social responsibility and a commitment to
creating a better world. In keeping with that spirit, Berkeley MBA students
get involved to make a difference. Almost the entire MBA class participates
during the year in one of the many fun events that are a part of the Challenge
for Charity – talent shows, charity auctions, and sports competitions that help
raise money for the Special Olympics and other organizations. Many Berkeley
MBA students volunteer as mentors for disadvantaged high school students
through the Young Entrepreneurs at Haas program (YEAH). Nearly 100 percent
of these high school students go on to college, many to top schools.
The cooperative, team-oriented nature of the Berkeley MBA program
encourages students to work together productively and harmoniously.
Haas students are ambitious and driven to succeed, but they also
understand the value of studying together and socializing together –
and they always seem to do it in high gear. They embody the California
mantra: work hard and play hard.
Moving from the South Bay, where he earned an engineering degree and
worked for three years, to San Francisco made a world of difference in Cedric
Dupont’s MBA experience. “This is an amazing environment. I am never bored
living in San Francisco,” he says. “There are museums and music and great
restaurants.” And when he needs a change from the city, Dupont finds it easy to
head for the mountains to ski or hike.
Sidewalk cafés and ski runs are a big change from the Mojave Desert, the
scene of Dupont’s triumph in the 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge robotic vehicle
race. He organized the winning team of experts and convinced management at
Volkswagen to sponsor the effort. The team’s creation, named Stanley, completed
the demanding 132-mile course in less than seven hours.
“Since childhood, I wanted to be an inventor,” Dupont says. “But as I got farther
away from pure science in my jobs, and was given more responsibility for planning
and managing projects, I realized that I really enjoyed it. That’s when I figured
out that I needed a real business education. Here at Haas, everything was
new. Even my math skills, which are very strong, were tested in new contexts.”
A basketball court isn’t the most likely place to find an MBA student at 10
o’clock on a Sunday night. Unlikely, that is, unless the student is Elizabeth
Lombardi. That’s when the co-ed Haas team she put together for Berkeley’s
intramural basketball league played its games. “We competed a lot against
undergraduates. On some nights, we really felt our age,” she says. “But we had
fun, and it was a great way to get to know people.”
Athletics is a passion for Lombardi. In 2006, she was on a five-woman team
that competed in the 24 Hours of Northstar mountain bike race in Lake Tahoe.
“Mountain biking is a sport without a lot of women,” Lombardi recalls. “The
race sparked Clif Bar’s campaign to encourage more women to ride and to
donate to the Breast Cancer Fund.”
At Haas he found that “everyone has a specialty or something they are particularly
known for. Everyone sticks out for a unique reason. I think that is what
That sort of socially responsible marketing is what Lombardi is exploring in
her MBA coursework. “Haas is giving me the tools to be a change agent,”
makes it so easy for us to collaborate.” That collaboration is evident, according
Lombardi says. “My classes are laying a foundation for building my dreams.”
Lombardi admits that the beauty of the Bay Area and its proximity to beaches,
(DMEC). “I was amazed by the amount of support the administration and other
that this is also “a hotbed of social entrepreneurship and a focal point for
Where Natural Beauty Meets Endless Opportunity
Few geographical areas in the world can meet, let
alone beat, the Haas School’s central location in the
San Francisco Bay Area. The Haas community is, in turn,
profoundly shaped by its surroundings, including the school’s magnificent
facilities, the campus and the city of Berkeley, and Northern California.
The San Francisco Bay Area is perennially designated the world’s most
popular tourist destination – and for good reason. There is the area’s
stunning natural beauty, its seductively benign weather, and its atmosphere
charged with a worldly sophistication and a distinctive openness to new ways
of thinking.
The Bay Area is also home to an innovation ecosystem that is unequaled
anywhere in the world. With its venture capital firms, established technology
companies, and biotech and digital media industries thriving, the Bay Area
marks one of nation’s most unique confluxes of business centers. Many of
the most dynamic names in business, from Charles Schwab to Google, call
the region home. Innovation is a part of the ethos in our area, and you feel it
every day at Haas.
Clockwise from top: Looking over the San Francisco Bay toward Berkeley (left)
and Oakland (right) from Downtown San Francisco; a Napa Valley vineyard; Oracle
headquarters in Redwood Shores; The Pacific Ocean coastline off of historic Highway 1;
and the cliffs of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park.
The Berkeley campus is perched on a hillside; its upper reaches are
devoted to a vast nature preserve – excellent for a run or a contemplative
walk with postcard views of San Francisco, the Golden Gate Bridge, and
the Pacific Ocean beyond. Surrounding the campus is the city of Berkeley,
the quintessential university town, and a legendary one. With its multitude
of coffee houses, shops, churches, theaters, world-famous gourmet
restaurants, charming neighborhoods, beautiful gardens, and some of the
best bookstores anywhere, Berkeley is cosmopolitan, funky, friendly, relaxed,
and always stimulating.
The city of San Francisco needs no introduction, since nearly everyone on the
planet has either experienced its charms or seen it in countless films and
television shows. Entertainment, culture, nightlife, shopping, sightseeing,
architectural gems – San Francisco is the epitome of the world-class, openminded
city blessed with the best of everything.
Less than an hour north of Berkeley is the alluring wine country of Napa and
Sonoma counties. The moody, breath-taking Pacific Ocean compels a visit
to one of the many open beaches or picturesque seaside towns dotting the
coastline, including Big Sur, Carmel-by-the-Sea, and Mendocino. The natural
beauty of Yosemite National Park, with its exquisite glacier-carved valley
of towering waterfalls and granite mountains, is only three hours from the
campus, as is one of the country’s premier skiing destinations – Lake Tahoe.
Rato entered politics in his native Spain
after receiving his Berkeley MBA in 1974. He
became a member of Parliament in 1982 and
was named Spain’s finance minister in 1996,
managing economic policy with long-term
objectives of low and stable inflation and low
recently, he was Spain‘s minister of the economy
and vice president for economic affairs.
Sarah Takesh
MBA 03
CEO, Tarsian & Blinkley
Kabul, Afghanistan
Building a business from scratch is usually enough
of a challenge for most entrepreneurs, but Sarah
Takesh, MBA 03 (above, right), decided to take on
the extra challenge of launching her company,
Tarsian & Blinkley, in war-torn Afghanistan.
Amidst an atmosphere of poverty and political
corruption, Takesh persists in bringing a modicum of economic sanity to the
lives of hundreds of women in Kabul and beyond through Tarsian & Blinkley, the
apparel and accessories company she founded in 2002. Takesh pays local women
above-market wages to sew, embroider, and bead the “European minimalist”
women’s clothing she designs using fabrics gathered from all over Asia.
Takesh’s dream of working in Central Asia, a region she fell in love with as a traveler,
was nurtured by the Haas School early on. “I vaguely mentioned the idea in
my application, and before I knew it the school was actively courting me on it,”
she says. She found a mentor in Will Rosenzweig, lecturer in responsible business,
who encouraged her to research possibilities in Afghanistan the summer
after her first year in the MBA program. Drawing on her previous experience in
production and design with apparel startups in New York, Takesh developed a
business plan for Tarsian & Blinkley with several other classmates. They entered
their plan in the National Social Venture Competition in 2003 and took first place.
Currently, Tarsian & Blinkley designs are only available via the Internet and select
boutiques (see www.tarsian.com). Takesh has received a good deal of national press
coverage – her designs were featured in Oprah Winfrey’s magazine last fall. “We
only sell to people who understand what we’re all about,” says Takesh. Meanwhile,
the company has expanded to make clothing for new customers, including the
Afghani military, and has begun construction on a sewing factory in Kabul.
Paul Otellini
MBA 74
CEO
Intel Corporation
Santa Clara, CA
In 2005, Paul Otellini
became the fifth chief
executive officer of Intel
Corporation – a convincing
indicator of personal
achievement and professional
distinction.
His promotion came after more than 30
remarkably successful years spent entirely
at Intel. “I stayed because I never ceased to
learn or to have a new opportunity to grow,”
he says. “We went from startup to the largest
semiconductor manufacturer in the world while
I was working here. It’s pretty hard to beat that
in any other place.”
When asked to reflect on the attributes of a
successful corporate leader, he underscores
a few: “I think one must possess relevant
competence in one’s industry and firm. And
the ability to manage well is a prerequisite
for leadership.” He adds, “At least in a hightech
company, one needs to be close to one’s
Shantanu Narayen
MBA 93
Even though he had the tools to become
a technical success in Silicon Valley – a
bachelor’s degree in electronics engineering
President and Chief and a master’s degree in computer science
Operating Officer – Shantanu Narayen thought he needed to
Adobe Systems Inc. beef up his business knowledge. “It was clear
San Jose, CA
I needed to round out some of my entrepreneurial
genes with a business education.” So
in 1991, the then Apple Computer Inc. manager
decided to attend evening classes to pursue a Berkeley MBA.
Narayen says he learned not only how to apply his engineering knowledge to
running a business, but savored the interaction with his fellow students and
instructors. After Apple, Narayen served as director of desktop and collaboration
products for Silicon Graphics, then co-founded Pictra Inc., a company
that pioneered the concept of digital photo sharing over the Internet.
Narayen joined Adobe in 1998 as a senior VP of worldwide product research,
was later promoted to executive vice president of worldwide products, and
appointed to his current post in January 2005 at the age of 41. He defines
his professional success as being able to capitalize on the opportunities
Adobe provides and says of his Berkeley MBA, “It gives a very broad perspective
on business – and a tremendous amount of confidence.”
Barbara
J. Desoer
MBA 77
Chief Technology &
Operations Officer
Bank of America
Raleigh, NC
Barbara Desoer, MBA 77,
is Chief Technology and
Operations Officer for
Bank of America, where
she leads strategy
development and
execution for Bank of
America’s technology
platforms and operations
capabilities. Desoer also
leads the continued development and
implementation of the company’s increasingly
important payments strategy.
Desoer’s broad mandate – one that covers
technology connecting Bank of America
with its approximately 53 million consumer
households, as well ensuring that critical
operations function reliably and efficiently
to the satisfaction of the bank’s customers
– requires strong technical, analytical, and
strategic skills. Desoer says she was drawn to
Haas because the school provided her with a
comprehensive education in these core areas.
She says her time at Haas has helped her
throughout her career by giving her both a
analytical foundation and early leadership
experience. “The MBA program provided me
with a foundation of technical skills which
I have applied in various roles throughout
my career,” she says. “Team projects in
the program helped me understand group
dynamics such as leadership, compromise, and
how to more effectively work as a team.”
Desoer joined Bank of America in 1977 and,
over the course of her distinguished career,
earned respect of her colleagues at all levels.
During Desoer’s leadership of the bank’s
consumer products division, Bank of America
gained the number one industry positions for
retail banking, deposit market share, number
of banking centers and ATMs, and the number
of active online banking customers. In 2006 and
in 2007, US Banker named Desoer one of the
“25 Most Powerful Women in Banking.”
Desoer is passionate about using the “voice
of the customer” to inform her business
decisions. She believes strongly in the value of
managing using analytics, and is committed to
constantly improving business processes.
As president of
Absolut Spirits, Bengt
Baron drew upon
his expertise in both
Swedish brands and
U.S. business to lead
one of the world’s
premium spirit labels.
Now, Baron helms the
V&S Group, which oversees Absolut, along
with V&S Distillers and V&S Wine. About his
decision to join Absolut, Baron said, “There
are not too many international Swedish
brands, and I have spent a lot of time in the
U.S., which is Absolut’s strongest market. So
it was a combination I couldn’t turn down.”
The number two vodka worldwide, Absolut is
available in 125 countries, although all of it is
manufactured in one factory in Sweden.
After graduation from the Haas School,
Baron joined McKinsey & Co., then worked for
a series of consumer product companies. “My
Berkeley MBA gave me a solid foundation to
take on business challenges of various sizes
and shapes,” says Baron.
In 1999, he joined StepStone AS, an Internetbased
job posting board. As director of the
Nordic Region, Baron helped the company
build a pan-European presence and launch
a successful IPO. The company is still going
strong, and it was only the lure of Absolut
that convinced Baron to leave StepStone.
During his time in the U.S., Baron also made
his mark in the Olympic Games. He won
two Olympic medals, a gold and a bronze,
swimming for the Swedish team in the 1980
(Moscow) and 1984 (Los Angeles) games.
Arun Sarin
MBA 78
Ceo
Vodafone Group Plc
London, United Kingdom
Now at the helm of Vodafone Group Plc, Arun
Sarin, MBA 78, has built a legacy as a strategist,
operations genius, and visionary at the
forefront of the wireless industry. Sarin was
appointed head of London-based Vodafone, the
world’s leading mobile telecommunications
company, in 2003.
As someone who has devoted much of his career
to linking people together, Sarin believes in the power of connections, including
those found through the Haas alumni network, which he calls “very supportive,”
adding, “It is part of coming to Haas: it will help to propel your career in
time.” As an alumnus, Sarin still comes to Haas and often makes time to share
his wisdom with current students.
About business, Sarin says, “It is not about money, greed and power. It is
about doing something bigger than yourself.” He notes that Vodafone does
business in more than 50 countries around the world and has more than 230
million customers. What resonates for Sarin about his company’s products
and services is that “We connect people at the deepest level, through telecommunications.
For us, to be a responsible business is tremendously important.”
In fact, Sarin believes, “The key difference between Haas and any other business
school is Haas produces leaders with a heart – leaders who are going to
leave the world a better place.”
As a result of this and what he sees as the university’s rigorous academic
preparation, Sarin finds that the Berkeley name is recognized all over the
world. “Berkeley and Haas both have a tremendous brand name overseas.
Everybody recognizes the university. When I go around the world and meet
chief executives, there are many who also graduated from Haas.”
“At Haas, the concurrent MBA/MPH degree
is so thoroughly integrated that it is more
like focusing your MBA in health care while
gaining a broader public health perspective,”
says Clare Carron. That integration
extends from coursework to student activities.
Specialized classes like Health Care
Strategy draw on case studies and speakers
from the industry, but Carron says other
Haas courses proved equally valuable.
“Classes like Operations, Game Theory,
and Information and Technology-Based
Marketing are just as applicable in the
health care setting.”
Student-run organizations like the Haas
Healthcare and BioBusiness Club draw
students from all disciplines to organize
and host events like the annual Business
of Health Care Conference. The inaugural
2006 conference drew more than 350 people
to hear and network with nationally known
speakers and experts.
Distinguished faculty members like
Kristiana Raube, PhD, develop personal,
as well professorial, relationships with
students. “The dual degree program is like
a family. We trust, encourage, and support
each other,” says Carron.
Both students and faculty carry impressive
credentials. “I have one classmate with
10 years experience in the pharmaceutical
industry and another who has advised
the Bush administration on health care.
They are extremely smart, but very down to
earth. People at Haas have a sort of humble
confidence that is very appealing.
Among the skills Carron honed at Haas
is “being a devil’s advocate. Learning to
explore all kinds of ideas and perspectives
is crucial to innovation.” And innovation,
Carron believes, is imperative for the
health care industry. “There are so many
unmet needs and so many disparate players
and priorities, from the board room to the
doctor’s exam room. My MBA/MPH gives me
insights into all sides of the issues.”
Costs and Financial Aid
2007–2008
Fees and Costs
Financial Aid Office
Nine-Month Budget
We encourage you to explore the Berkeley
MBA program further, and we invite you to
apply for admission
Every fall, the Full-time MBA Program
enrolls approximately 240 bright, diverse, and
creative future business leaders. We admit
candidates with solid professional experience
and leadership potential who come from a
wide variety of industries and backgrounds. In
addition, we seek candidates who will add to
the richness of the classroom experience and
participate actively in the Haas community.
Candidates should apply online through
the Haas School of Business web site at
mba.haas.berkeley.edu. Please read the
application instructions carefully. In addition,
be sure to listen to the admissions podcast
available in which the director of admissions
provides helpful application tips and
suggestions.
Professional Experience
The quality of an MBA program is immeasurably
enhanced by the real-world business experience
that students bring to the classroom. For this
reason, most of our students have two or more
years of full-time professional work experience
following the completion of their undergraduate
degree. More important, however, is the
richness of that experience. When reviewing
applications, we are particularly interested in
the progression and milestones of your career,
as well as your supervisor’s assessment of your
value as an employee and potential as a leader.
Academic Aptitude
Candidates may apply to the program if
they hold the equivalent of a four-year U.S.
bachelor’s degree and have not obtained an
MBA or comparable degree from another
institution. In reviewing your transcripts, we
take into account your choice of coursework,
the rigor of your undergraduate major, the
competitiveness of your academic institutions,
and your grade point average (GPA). Although
we do not have a minimum requirement, a GPA
of B (3.0) or better is generally the standard for
serious consideration.
The curriculum at Haas includes courses that
have a qualitative focus and others that are
more analytical and quantitative. All applicants
should have completed, at a minimum, a
college-level mathematics or statistics course.
The Admissions Committee looks carefully
at quantitative proficiency when making its
admissions decisions.
GMAT Exam
All candidates are required to take the GMAT
exam prior to the deadline for which they
are applying. While there is no minimum
acceptable GMAT score, the average for the
fall 2007 entering class is 710, and the middle
80 percent range is between 660 and 760. We
are especially interested in your performance
on the quantitative section as an indication of
your mathematics proficiency. For fall 2008
admission, we accept official scores from exams
taken on or after October 1, 2002. Be sure to
have your exam results sent to Berkeley’s Fulltime
MBA Program, institution code: N2VPT47.
TOEFL or IELTS Exam
Applicants who received their degrees in
countries other than the U.S., UK, Australia,
or English-speaking Canada are required
to take the TOEFL exam or the IELTS. Only
applicants who have completed a full year of
U.S. university-level coursework with a grade of
B or better are exempt from this requirement.
Residence in the U.S. does not waive this
requirement.
Your most recent TOEFL score must be at least
570 for the paper and pencil test, at least 230
for the computer-based test (CBT), or at least
68 for the Internet-based test (iBT). The average
scores for admitted students entering in 2007
were 274 on the CBT and 110 on the iBT. To
have your exam results sent to Berkeley’s Fulltime
MBA Program, list institution code 4833
and department code 02. If you have taken
the IELTS, a band score of 7.0 is the minimum
required for consideration. For fall 2008
admission, we only accept official scores from
exams taken on or after June 1, 2006.
Letters of Recommendation
We require two letters of recommendation and
prefer that at least one come from a current
employer. Select individuals with whom you
have had considerable professional interaction,
such as your supervisor or a major client.
The title or status of those you select is not
important. What does matter is how closely your
letter writers have worked with you and whether
they can attest to your value as an employee,
your professional accomplishments, and your
personal qualities and interpersonal skills
in an organizational context. For this reason,
we strongly discourage academic references.
Letters of recommendation from co-workers,
someone you have supervised, relatives, or
personal and family friends are inappropriate
and can be detrimental to the review of your
application. Please do not submit more than
two letters, and if you choose not to obtain a
letter from your current supervisor, be certain
to explain why.
Interviews
The Admissions Committee conducts interviews
of applicants by invitation only, and we ask that
you please refrain from contacting us to request
Admission to Concurrent
Degree Programs
There are three joint degree programs available
for full-time MBA students, including an MBA/
MPH, JD/MBA, and MBA/MA in International
Area Studies. Candidates for the MBA/MPH
Program must complete the MBA application
form and apply by the normal MBA application
deadlines; applicants for the JD/MBA must
apply to the MBA program and the Law School
separately, and applicants for the MBA/MIAS
may add the International Area Studies program
during the first year of study.
The Berkeley MBA program has one of the
most reasonable tuition and fee structures
of any top MBA program. Almost 70
percent of Haas students receive some
form of financial assistance, including
scholarships and loans.
Educational Costs
Each year the Financial Aid Office estimates the
average costs for a graduate student during the
nine month academic year. These estimates are
the basis for determining financial aid eligibility
and supplemental loan borrowing limits. See
right for the estimated costs for 2007-2008.
Because these costs are averages for all UC
Berkeley graduate students, actual costs
– especially housing – may be higher.
Computer Costs
All MBA students are required to have a laptop
computer. Student discounts for laptop and
software bundles are available at the Scholars
Workstation, www.tsw.berkeley.edu.
California Residency
In many cases, U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent
residents will qualify for California residency
by their second year of graduate school. We
strongly recommend that students pursue this,
as it can significantly reduce their student fees
(by an estimated $11,069 in 2007-08).
Financial Aid
Federal financial aid, in the form of loans, is
available for MBA students who are either U.S.
citizens or U.S. permanent residents. To apply,
file the Free Application for Federal Student
Aid (FAFSA) at www.fafsa.ed.gov any time after
January 1st, but before the UC Berkeley priority
deadline of March 1st. The UC Berkeley federal
school code is 001312. Apply for aid before you
are admitted to Haas!
Student Loans
Most MBA students finance a portion of their
education through the Federal Direct Loan
Program: a federally funded, non-credit based
loan program. Up to $20,500 may be borrowed
annually through a combination of subsidized
and unsubsidized loan funds. The Direct Loan is
a fixed rate loan, with an interest rate of 6.8
percent. Students wanting to borrow more than
$20,500 can also utilize one of the supplemental
credit-based loan programs.
Brian L. Maxwell Fellows Program
The Brian L. Maxwell Fellows Program
supports Berkeley MBA students who
exhibit an entrepreneurial nature and
a willingness to take a chance on new
ideas and innovations. Students selected
as fellows receive full tuition and fees,
and become part of a fellowship network
with other recipients. The program was
established by Jennifer Maxwell, BS 88,
(Nutrition) in honor of her late husband,
PowerBar founder Brian Maxwell, BA 75.
Scholarships
In 2007-2008, the Haas School awarded over
$2.06 million in scholarships to domestic and
international students. At the time of admission
review, all applicants are routinely considered
for Haas Merit Scholarships, and awards are
based on exceptional merit and career potential
as demonstrated in the application. The awards
can cover up to full tuition and registration fees
for both years of full-time study. No separate
application form or special request is needed.
Applicants awarded a Haas Merit Scholarship
are notified in writing with the admission letter.
The Berkeley MBA program also offers Haas
Achievement Awards, which are given to
individuals who have achieved tremendous
success in spite of significant economic,
educational, health-related, or other obstacles.
As with the merit scholarships, these are
awarded at the time of admission and cover
up to full tuition and fees for both years of
full-time study. Please note, however, that
applicants for Haas Achievement Awards must
answer an optional essay question on the
admission application.
In addition to the Haas Merit Scholarships,
Haas Achievement Awards, and Maxwell
Fellowships, there are a variety of other aid
programs recognizing students in particular
discipline areas, including the CJ White Grants
for students pursuing careers in Finance,
the GAP Fellowships in Corporate Social
Responsibility, and the DK Kim Program for
second-year students. Further details for these
programs can be found on the Haas web site.
Instructorships
Many graduate student instructorships are
available to second-year students in several
fields. Graduate Student Instructors (GSIs)
receive reduced tuition as well as a monthly
stipend. Approximately 28 percent of the
second-year full-time MBA students served
as GSIs in 2006-07. You should apply for these
positions in the spring of your first year.
LRAP
The Haas School is pleased to be one of the few
top business schools to offer a loan repayment
assistance program (LRAP). The LRAP is
designed to provide modest financial support
to recent graduates of the MBA program who
are employed in the public or nonprofit sectors
(where salaries are typically lower).
Financial Assistance for
International Students
International students are eligible for Haas
Merit Scholarships and Haas Achievement
Awards, both of which pay up to full tuition
and fees for both years of MBA study. Please
note, however, that only a limited number of
students are chosen for these, and the only
other available aid is in the form of private
student loans.
Most international students will be responsible
for paying the entire cost of attendance for both
years of study, and should plan carefully to
ensure adequate financial resources.
Total Fees Estimate
for California residents $26,881
(including health insurance)*
Total Fees Estimate
for nonresidents $37,950
From the Dean
The Haas School of Business is the kind of place that
sets minds alight, and sets lives on a brighter course.
That is certainly true of the Berkeley Full-time MBA
Program. I encourage you to learn more about its
benefits for your future career success.
You will soon discover that the Haas School is about the
independent and innovative thinking that differentiates
UC Berkeley from others. Through the path-breaking
research and teaching of our faculty, and the pioneering activities and
leadership of our students and alumni, Haas plays an integral role in
creating world-changing innovations. Moreover, our school expects and
achieves excellence in its pursuit of new ideas and best practices.
As a relatively small program, the Full-time Berkeley MBA is about
community, and the kind of esprit de corps that this fosters. As
a Berkeley MBA student, you will become an essential part of a
community that values diversity. Our students are particularly well
oriented to adding value in team-based, collaborative ways, with a
community spirit that is so much a part of the Berkeley tradition. And
finally, our students possess confidence without attitude – a real asset
for success.
Haas is also a business school with large and growing momentum.
We are at a strategic crossroads and have set a course to build upon
our reputation for quality and leadership among the world’s very top
business schools. For example, we are significantly expanding the
size of our faculty and planning for a new, additional building. This
is a school that is proactively increasing its reach and its excellence
– striving to make a greater, positive impact on business and society. It
is an exciting time to be here.
Please visit us to meet the faculty, students, and staff, and sample what
we have to offer.
