Phillip Harris<br />

Phillip Harris is a young baritone from Oakl<strong>and</strong>, <strong>California</strong>. His operatic performances include the title role in Le Nozze di Figaro where he performed in<br />

Italy with the International Lyric Academy in Rome <strong>and</strong> Viterbo :opera in concert <strong>and</strong> Jimmy in The Threepenny Opera with Opera UCLA. He has also<br />

performed staged scenes from Die Zauberflöte, <strong>and</strong> Così fan tutte with UCI Opera. Recently, Phillip sang for the Links Inc 65 th anniversary celebration in<br />

Washington D.C. <strong>and</strong> for the National Association <strong>of</strong> Negro <strong>Music</strong>ians showcase in Los Angeles. Also associated with the National Association <strong>of</strong> Negro<br />

<strong>Music</strong>ians, he performed for the mid-day collegiate recital in Philadelphia during the 92 nd annual convention in July <strong>of</strong> 2011. A student <strong>of</strong> Dr. Darryl Taylor,<br />

he will be graduating in June <strong>and</strong> is currently auditioning for Masters programs in voice at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Michigan, Houston, Kentucky <strong>and</strong> Cal State<br />

Long Beach<br />

Richard Heard<br />

Lyric tenor Richard Heard, received the 2009 Silver Medal Winner in the American Traditions Voice Competition. He is a regional finalist <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Metropolitan Opera Auditions <strong>and</strong> has received prestigious awards <strong>and</strong> grants from the National Society <strong>of</strong> Arts <strong>and</strong> Letters, Rotary International, the Fuchs<br />

Opera Awards <strong>and</strong> Mu Phi Epsilon. A graduate <strong>of</strong> Southern Methodist <strong>University</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>California</strong>, Mr. Heard made his operatic debut at the<br />

Aspen <strong>Music</strong> Festival. He has given voice recitals at over 50 universities across the country. He made his European debut in December 1994, performing<br />

concerts in Merzig, Emden <strong>and</strong> Berlin. He is Director <strong>of</strong> American Singers Opera Project, a two-week summer opera workshop held at Wake Forest<br />

<strong>University</strong>. Mr. Heard is Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Music</strong> at Wake Forest <strong>University</strong>. He will release hi next CD “The Vocal Works <strong>of</strong> Florence Price,” in June<br />

2012.<br />

Bonita Hyman<br />

Brooklyn-born mezzo-soprano, Bonita Hyman, has been living <strong>and</strong> making her career in Germany since 1995. She appear as a featured soloist in<br />

numerous world premiere productions on international stages, among them Gr<strong>and</strong> Théâter de Genève, Opéra de Nancy et de Lorraine, Nationale Opéra de<br />

Lyon, the Festspielhaus at the Bregenzer Festspiele (Summer 2012), <strong>and</strong> the Komische Oper Berlin (Spring 2013), among others. Further operatic<br />

appearances include Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Dallas Opera, Lyric Opera <strong>of</strong> Chicago <strong>and</strong> the Opéra Comique de Paris, among others. Ms. Hyman’s diverse<br />

concert repertoire runs the gamut from Händel’s MESSIAH to the Verdi REQUIEM to the Berio SINFONIA. Her concert career highlights include<br />

appearances with: Tonhalle Orchester Zürich, L’Opéra et L’Orchestre Philharmonique de Marseille, <strong>and</strong> Houston Symphony, among others. Her frequent<br />

solo recitals <strong>and</strong> guest appearances under the auspices <strong>of</strong> UNICEF <strong>and</strong> Kommerzbank inspire sold-out audiences throughout Germany.<br />

Wayne Jennings<br />

Wayne Jennings, tenor, is a native <strong>of</strong> Washington, DC. A graduate <strong>of</strong> the Duke Ellington School <strong>of</strong> the Performing Arts <strong>and</strong> has been called "one <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Nation's top young talents" by the Washington Free Voice. He made his international operatic debut in 2009 at the Amalfi Coast <strong>Music</strong> <strong>and</strong> Arts festival in<br />

Italy as Rinuccio in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi under the baton <strong>of</strong> Maestro Joe Walsh. He was the featured soloist in Adolphus Hailstork’s I Will Lift Up<br />

Mine Eyes <strong>and</strong> R. Nathaniel Dett’s The Ordering <strong>of</strong> Moses <strong>and</strong> Gershwin’s Porgy <strong>and</strong> Bess under the baton <strong>of</strong> Maestro Stanley J Thurston. Mr. Jennings<br />

was also a regional finalist <strong>and</strong> 1 st place winner in the National Association <strong>of</strong> Teachers <strong>of</strong> Singing Competition, the Leontyne Price Competition for<br />

Emerging Artists, Paul Robeson Competition <strong>and</strong> the Omega Psi Phi Competition. In addition, he is a recipient <strong>of</strong> the Merit Award for the National<br />

Foundation for the Arts.<br />

Anita Johnson<br />

Ms. Johnson has been a performing artist <strong>and</strong> music educator for twenty plus years. She’s performed at the White House for President <strong>and</strong> Mrs. Obama;<br />

performed with Stevie Wonder, Pavarotti, Fleming, Alagna, <strong>and</strong> others at the Met, NYCO, <strong>and</strong> numerous theaters <strong>and</strong> auditoriums across the US <strong>and</strong><br />

Europe. She’s educated audiences about American music history through her one-woman shows the Black Roots <strong>of</strong> Song, <strong>and</strong> ABC’S: American Black<br />

Composers’ Contributions to Our <strong>Music</strong>al Heritage © ; created, directed, produced, <strong>and</strong> performed a Spirituals Event He’s Got the Whole World in His H<strong>and</strong>;<br />

<strong>and</strong> visited universities giving recitals <strong>and</strong> Performance Excellence master classes. Ms. Johnson has a BM from <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Southern <strong>California</strong>, an MM<br />

<strong>and</strong> K-12 <strong>Music</strong> Certification from <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Michigan; <strong>and</strong> completed the Met’s Young Artist Development Program. Currently she sings the title role<br />

Yol<strong>and</strong>a F. Johnson<br />

Yol<strong>and</strong>a F. Johnson, Lyric Soprano, most recently performed the role <strong>of</strong> Millie in the NY reading <strong>of</strong> the new opera, Harriet Tubman: When I Crossed that<br />

Line to Freedom, by Nkeiru Okoye. Other credits include Anita Hill in Clarence <strong>and</strong> Anita with Underworld Productions Opera Outreach <strong>and</strong> Noémie in<br />

New York Lyric Opera’s Cendrillon. She holds bachelor’s <strong>and</strong> master’s degrees in vocal performance <strong>and</strong> arts management, respectively. She has<br />

performed in several musical venues in the U.S. <strong>and</strong> internationally, including opera, concert, oratorio <strong>and</strong> sacred music <strong>and</strong> is an active recitalist/lecturer<br />

including, most notably, her concert on African-American spirituals, A Spirituals Experience. She recently released the album, Feel the Spirit! featuring<br />

unique renditions <strong>of</strong> traditional spirituals. Yol<strong>and</strong>a also serves as the United Nations representative for the Foundation for Post Conflict Development,<br />

where she will explore how music can help countries heal in the aftermath <strong>of</strong> wartime.<br />

R<strong>and</strong>ye Jones<br />

R<strong>and</strong>ye Jones holds her Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts degree in <strong>Music</strong> Education From Bennett College, Greensboro, North Carolina, <strong>and</strong> her Master <strong>of</strong> <strong>Music</strong> degree in<br />

Vocal Performance from Florida State <strong>University</strong>, Tallahassee. She is currently a doctoral student in Vocal Literature at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Iowa, where she<br />

studies with Stephen Swanson. Ms. Jones has gained international recognition for her research <strong>of</strong> African American vocalists <strong>and</strong> composers, represented<br />

through her Web site,Afrocentric Voices in Classical <strong>Music</strong>, <strong>and</strong> for her research project, The Art <strong>of</strong> the Negro Spiritual. A lecturer <strong>and</strong> recitalist, she most<br />

recently presented a lecture-recital on spirituals at the 2011 Phenomenon <strong>of</strong> Singing International Symposium VIII in St. John's,Newfoundl<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

Labrador, Canada. She is also on the library staff at Grinnell College, Grinnell, Iowa.<br />

Raymond Tymas-Jones<br />

Raymond Tymas-Jones’ creative research has concentrated in solo vocal performance <strong>and</strong> academic leadership in the arts. He has performed as a featured<br />

soloist with outst<strong>and</strong>ing orchestras such as the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, the St. Louis Orchestra, the Kämmergild Orchestra <strong>of</strong> St. Louis, the<br />

Dortmund Youth Orchestra (GER), the Erie Chamber Orchestra <strong>and</strong> the Waterloo/Cedar Falls Orchestra. His operatic <strong>and</strong> musical theatre performances<br />

with such companies as Artpark Opera (Lewiston, NY), Connecticut Opera, Syracuse Opera, Erie Opera Theatre <strong>and</strong> the Greater Buffalo Opera Company.<br />

Most recently, he toured with the Essence <strong>of</strong> Joy Alumni Choir <strong>of</strong> Pennsylvania State <strong>University</strong> to Belgium, Luxembourg <strong>and</strong> France as guest soloist,<br />

performing Adolphus Hailstork’s I Will Lift Up Mine Eyes, a cantata for tenor <strong>and</strong> mixed chorus. Tymas-Jones is currently Dean <strong>of</strong> the College <strong>of</strong> Fine Arts<br />

<strong>and</strong> the Associate Vice President for the Arts at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Utah.<br />

Victoria Kirsch<br />

Pianist Victoria Kirsch creates innovative programs that combine opera, song, theater, poetry <strong>and</strong> visual arts. Current projects include Trunk Show: Smoke<br />

<strong>and</strong> Mirrors, or the Alchemy <strong>of</strong> Desire; Andy Warhol’s World in Song; This, <strong>and</strong> My Heart: The Worlds <strong>of</strong> Emily Dickinson; <strong>and</strong> Chick Songs: Art Songs by<br />

Women Composers. She continues her association with Julia Migenes, playing for the celebrated soprano’s shows throughout the world. She is the music<br />

director <strong>of</strong> Opera Arts, a Palm Springs-based performance organization. Victoria has worked with national <strong>and</strong> regional opera companies (Los Angeles,<br />

Cincinnati, Long Beach Operas) <strong>and</strong> international competitions (Operalia, MONC Auditions), <strong>and</strong> she has been a popular teaching artist for Los Angeles<br />

Opera’s Community Programs Department. She was a vocal faculty member at USC’s Thornton School <strong>of</strong> <strong>Music</strong> from 1995 to 1999 <strong>and</strong> the SongFest
