Greetings from your Program Chair
It was Sunday evening August 3, 1952 when ten
dentists met in Dr. Sylvan Schierson’s home at 1571
North Crescent Heights Blvd in Los Angeles. These
dentists included Drs. Ariaudo, Johnson, Ratcliff, Yeoman,
Feder, Rice, Schierson, Shapiro, Bernick, and
Reeves. They formed what has become an enduring
organization, the Western Society of Periodontology.
I would like to invite you to the 63nd Annual Scientific
Session of the Western Society of Periodontology
September 26-27, 2015 in Newport Beach, California.
Much has been said recently about collaboration
between specialists and generalists. It’s as if it is a
new revelation in care. However, this organization
was formed with this being its fundamental basis.
Dr. Richard Knight a longtime general dentist member
stated in an interview for the Fall 2013 WSP
Gum Line digital newsletter: “The WSP collaboration
benefits general dentists, dental hygienists,
and periodontists. All interest groups win; most importantly
the patient. As members of WSP, the general
dentist and dental hygienist establish working
relationships with multiple periodontists, and that
allows for a better understanding of when and why
advanced periodontal procedures are required.”
The WSP has attracted the best and brightest clinicians
and academicians on the West Coast. Membership
has always been the who’s who of dentistry.
What are the benefits of attending a Western Society
of Periodontology Annual Scientific Session?
• Topics are selected first and foremost for the
clinician. The goal is for the attendee to use this
information when he / she returns to their private
practice.
• Periodontists, general dentists, and hygienists
share an equal stake in the meeting. Everyone is
recognized as counterparts in the delivery of care.
• The entire focus of the event is on collaboration.
• There is mutual trust and respect among members.
Ideas and suggestions freely flow. This is the essence
of camaraderie and many members consider
this is the greatest member benefit.
• New relationships are established and former relationships
are deepened.
Many consider this year’s program among the all-time
best for WSP. Current president Dr. Peter Russo recently
stated: “this is sure to be one of the best dental
meetings of the year in the United States”. Dr. Don
Clem will open the scientific session with a keynote
address. Don has been an officer for many organizations
and has over 30 years of clinical experience.
He understands the benefits of collaboration and has
a vision for dentistry’s future. Dr. Mark Reynolds has
an amazing knowledge in bone biology and regeneration.
His fundamentals were formed studying with his
mentor Dr. Gerald Bowers. Dr. Reynolds is the Dean
at the University of Maryland and is also a Director
for the American Board of Periodontology. Dr. Pascal
Magne is one of the leading esthetic dentists in the
world. He received his education at the University of
Geneva Switzerland under the mentorship of Dr. Urs
Belser. Dr. Magne is sure to give a lecture that will
never be forgotten. Dr. Joseph Kan is renowned in
implant esthetics related to the gingival smile line. Dr.
James Katancik received his PhD from the University
of Buffalo. His message, intended for the dental
hygienists, will encompass the merits of periodontal
therapy options based on the etiology and pathogenesis
of disease. Finally, Dr. Charles Goodacre and Dr.
Tom Kepic will close the session by sharing clinical
and inter-personal information they have developed
by their collaborative relationship over many years.
Please join us at this memorable event.
Sincerely,
Dr. Tom Kepic
