Saturday, September 26, 2015 8:30am - 9:00am Keynote Address Donald S. Clem III, D.D.S. Keynote Address It is clear that our population is aging. As we live longer, we will be faced with more diseases, employ more interventions and prescribe more medications. All of which will be delivered to a population of patients that see no boundries in terms of function or esthetics. How then can we take advantage of the synergy of working together to deliver state of the art dentistry in the most efficient, predictable, safe manner? The era of a patient having one doctor to take care of all their needs is over. Medicine has learned that managing this population requires the expertise of the team approach and health is no longer defined by the absence of disease, but by the quality of life associated with a longer life span. What will the next decade look like in terms of how periodontal diseases are managed and how implant therapy is delivered? What are the economic and social barriers to care and how can a well-functioning, highly communicative team influence the health of a generation? We must think of disease management in broader terms, plan for tooth replacements based on soft and hard tissue reconstruction and develop risk assessment strategies to identify those patients early in the diagnosis rather than when conditions have advanced to a level where predictability and cost become driving factors. All of which require a team of care givers who bring the expertise of training an experience to shape a healthier more proactive future for our patients. Biography: Dr. Clem received his dental degree from Loyola University School of Dentistry in Chicago, Illinois in 1980, and his specialty training in periodontics from the University of Texas Health Science Center - San Antonio in 1984.He was President of the California Society of Periodontists (CSP)in 1995.Dr. Clem was President of the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation (AAPF) in 2003. Dr. Clem has served on multiple American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) Committees and Task Forces including the Strategic Planning Committee, Education Committee, and the Editorial Liaison Committee. He was President of the American Academy of Periodontology 2010-2011. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology(ABP)and maintains a very busy private periodontal and implant practice in Fullerton, California. 4
