Page 6 From the Recorder’s Desk By John Olivarri As we began the year, everyone was talking about how much fun we were having. It seems that it just keeps getting better. While the temple has been dark, we have been enjoying all the activities that our Potentate set up for us. The bingo and poker games have seen big attendance, and the parades also have been attended well. There have been several benefits from different units and clubs, which were well supported. The Membership committee has been working long hours to help us gain that Gold. As we get ready to start the second half, we all look forward to finishing up the year with a bang. Proposed By Law Change Our current by laws call for a stated meeting every 3 rd Monday except in December, when we meet on the 2 nd Mon. The Potentate has the option of going dark in June, July and Aug. For several years, we have held two meetings on Saturday, which seem to be popular. We are doing this in violation of our By-Laws. Imperial By-Laws require Temples to hold a minimum of four stated meetings a year. I plan to continue meeting as we have been. We will continue to have the nine (9) meetings; six (6) will be on the 3rd Monday. The December election will be on the 2 nd Monday. We will have the two (2) Saturday meetings and will be dark in the Summer . This By-Law change would allow the Saturday meetings, and when we have a program such as Dr. Herndon’s hospital presentation (more suited to an open forum), we do not have to tile the meeting. The change is as follows; Previous 3.1 Stated Meetings. A stated meeting shall be held on the third Monday of each month except the annual December meeting which will be held on the second Monday. Proposed change 3.1 Stated Meetings. A stated meeting shall be held a minimum of four (4) times a year. No other change. This change will be read at the September 15 th stated meeting and voted on at the October 15 th stated meeting. Page 7 Arabia Shrine Sportsmen Unit By Rudy Staudt / Treasurer Now that our 6th Annual Sporting Clays Tournament is officially over, it’s time to thank some of the people who helped make it a big success. I would not have the space to mention everyone by name, but special thanks to our Unit Members; James VanMeter, Chris Staudt, the Divan and their Ladies, Sponsors and their guests. We had 126 shooters competing for awards. Many of these were major sponsors and their guests from the oil and energy industry. Because of their support we will soon be able to make large contributions to our local Hospitals. Several Shrine members were able to shoot, thanks to the generosity of our sponsors. Arabia Oriental Band By: John Barron We seem to have survived the long hot Texas summer, and once again the lights go up and Arabia moves back into full swing. Looking at the calendar for the balance of the year, we as Shriners are going to be very busy. It will not be long before we talk about Thanksgiving and Christmas, along with the New Year. There will be parties and dances, socials and plenty of good food and friendship. We have a surprise for our Oriental Band members as we continue to build out our unit room and furnish it with all the comforts of home. When you visit the band room on the east wall you will find a beautiful mural with an oasis scene that covers much of the wall. This stylish rendering was provided by Arabia’s own Vernon “Pogo” King of the Clown Jewels. After some collaboration, Pogo settled on a design that suits our goal, “Welcome to our Oasis”. We want everyone to feel welcome to enter our doors and enjoy first class The day started with coffee and breakfast tacos donated and served by Derrick Oil. After a morning of shooting, everyone came inside for cool refreshments and lunch. Harbor America, one of our major sponsors, cooked and served brisket, sausage, chicken wings and all the trimmings. The Fairbanks Lodge guys, also Unit Members, served chopped beef sandwiches, potato salad and homemade cookies complements of Moe’s Bar-B-Q. Coolers full of water were donated again by Ainsworth Trucking and placed at shooting stations throughout the course. By the time the next Arabian is published we should have the final net amount that will be given to our local Hospitals. Plans are already being made to make next year’s event even larger. If you have not been to a Sportsmen Unit meeting lately, do not forget that we changed the meeting night to the first Wednesday of each month. Our meetings start at 7:00 P.M. Dinner is usually served before the meeting. fellowship with our members and ladies. Stop by and visit when you find our doors open and have a taste of genuine Shrine hospitality. To our brother “Pogo”, thank you and remember there is always a comfortable chair waiting for your visit. September will also find the Oriental Band meeting much as we did earlier this year with a called meeting in the band room at 10 A.M., Saturday September 8 th . The ladies have graciously agreed to prepare lunch with our own version of a Mexican fiesta with enchilada’s and all the fixings. Please e-mail or call John Barron with your reservations so we can prepare plenty of good food and beverages. There will be several issues to discuss during the meeting portion, and a discussion of plans for hosting the 2013 T.A.S.O.B. mid-winter meeting. As with the title of the book, It Takes a Village”, there is need for everyone’s help. Hope to see YOU there; especially if you are a new Noble or just one looking for a new and unique opportunity to be a part of the continuing tradition of Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. But do not come if you do not want to have FUN! Grace and I would like to thank all of you for your prayers and well wishes.
