Dear Nobles and Ladies,
Potentate’s Message
Linda and I hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful and fun filled Summer; a
Summer that provided the opportunity to recharge the batteries. We will have a
very fast start in September:
1) 9/1/12 El Mina/Arabia membership Fish Fry in Alvin.
2) 9/6/12 Official Visit to the Southeast Shrine Club.
3) 9/7/12 Poker and Bingo Night for all Nobles, Ladies and guests.
4) 9/8/12 Cabiri Sock Hop for all Nobles and Ladies (free dance).
5) 9/15/12 Stated Meeting - 4:30, Mexican Fiesta - 6:00, Shrine Club Dance -
8:00 P.M.
6) 9/22/12 Bay City Parade.
7) 9/28/12 Ft. Bend County Fair Parade.
8) 9/29/12 Golfers Hospital Benefit.
Your Divan had a busy Summer; attending TSA, Imperial, Hospital Benefits, Christmas in July at the
Galveston Hospital, Schulenburg Parade and several official visits.
Your Divan and several Past Potentates, who attended the Imperial session, worked, played and enjoyed
a very constructive session. The big news from Charlotte during Imperial is that our Ladies and family
members will be allowed to participate in public parades with some restrictions. This change will be
discussed during our September stated meeting.
I want to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation to members of the Patrol who traveled at their
own expense to represent Arabia in the Patrol competition and the Imperial Parade. They also brought
home two trophies.
Lady Linda would like to thank the Divan and Staff for the beautiful flowers and gift presented to her at
Imperial. She sends her love to each of you.
A very special thanks from all who attended Imperial to Laris and Linda Nolan for transporting our luggage
and using their room as the “official” Arabia Hospitality Room. Thank you both for your hard work and the
love shown to each and everyone.
Nobles and Ladies: Please come to the Shrine Center to see the beautiful new Arabia Memorial Paver
Garden. Cornerstones from the Temple in Downtown Houston (chartered in 1915), the Braeswood Temple
and our present Temple will be in the Memorial Garden. Purchase a paver and be part of this beautiful area
at the entrance to the Shine Center.
Shriners have fun and take care of the kids; that’s what we do.
Yours in the Faith,
R.E. “Bob” Sharpe
A Living Memorial Lives On
Lest we forget, our Hospital Benefit Programs are year round by virtue of their continuing needs. “A LIVING
MEMORIAL” can add meaning to your remembrance for a friend or loved one and will help a physically
challenged child to walk or a burned child to live. “A LIVING MEMORIAL” will answer parents’ prayers.
More and more of our members are taking advantage of the postage paid memorial envelopes for such tributes.
I respectfully ask and urge you to support this portion of our Hospital Benefit Program.
Those of us who grew up in the South, specialty Texas, know to just be patient
and wait a few hours for the weather to change. Texans know that we need to
a d a p t
quickly to survive in this area of the country; my point being that some people
have been looking for canoes or jon boats because of the heavy rains and flooding that came during the last
few months. Being good Shriners, we do not let a little rain dampen our spirits. We just pull the hat down a
little tighter and lean forward.
After Imperial in July, most came home to rest while some continued with their vacations, and others just
let the world go by. One of our Shrine Clubs, about 60 strong, gathered toys, blankets, pillows, hats and
headed to the Burns Center in Galveston to offer those Children a Christmas in July. Mr. & Mrs. Santa Claus
even showed up for these Children. Motor Corps hosted a FUN RUN on August 4th, at five locations
(Woodlands Harley, Texan Harley, Kingwood Harley, Pasadena Honda & San Jacinto Harley). The winners
of the FUN RUN: 1st Place - Janet Hudkins, 2nd Place - Todd Blankenburg, 3rd Place - Evelyn Gregory, 4th
Place - Flynt Blackwell. Worst hand - Linda Nolan, who wins a gift certificate from Renegade. Consolation
prizes, which were donated by San Jacinto Harley-Davidson went to Steve Gregory & Sherman Markowitz.
Schulenburg TX had their Official Visit and Parade on Sunday the 5th of August. We also held an obstacle
course Aug 9-12 in San Antonio. Our Annual Commander’s Party on August 25th was well attended and
enjoyed by all.
Anyone interested in becoming a member, helping, participating or donating, please contact our
Commander, David Janda at baberuth60714@yahoo.com or Lt Cmdr. Albert Janda at afvkj@att.net You
do not need to own a Motorcycle or Red Racer to be a member of the Motor Corps. Our only requirement
is that “YOU WANT TO HAVE FUN”. If this fits you, this is your unit. We take pride in putting the Fez in the
public eye at many functions around the City and State. Not everyone knows that everything we do is for
the Children at our hospitals.
Thank You
I would like to thank everyone in the “Shrine Family” who supported Kathy Segerlind, Swede’s daughter and
me at the time of Swede’s death. The cards, the calls and the large attendance at the visitation and funeral
service were heartwarming. Thank you to the Provost Guard for providing the Honor Guard the evening of
the visitation.
Sincerely,
You missed it!!! A great time was had by all at our sixth annual pilgrimage to Alvin. Sixteen members and
two guests attended the Alvin Opry after a great buffet dinner at Parks restaurant. The Alvin Opry is only
performing on Friday nights. They had their usual line-up of local talent, plus some special guests performing
that Nashville sound. By far, it was the best show in a long time, and all for only $10.00 per person. This
event is still a fun time and a wonderful time for our members to socialize during our summer break. A tip of
the FEZ to the Alvin Opry and Parks Restaurant!
Southeast Shrine Club meets the first Thursday of the month at Golf Crest Country Club in Pearland at
7:00 P.M. Our next meeting is September 6 th , and it will also be the Official Visit. Come out and enjoy the
evening with us. Please RSVP to President Mike Sampson at 281-485-5119 if you would like to join us.

From the Recorder’s Desk
By John Olivarri
As we began the year, everyone was talking about how much fun we were having. It seems that it
just keeps getting better. While the temple has been dark, we have been enjoying all the activities
that our Potentate set up for us. The bingo and poker games have seen big attendance, and the parades
also have been attended well. There have been several benefits from different units and clubs, which were
well supported. The Membership committee has been working long hours to help us gain that Gold. As we
get ready to start the second half, we all look forward to finishing up the year with a bang.
Proposed By Law Change
Our current by laws call for a stated meeting every 3 rd Monday except in December, when we meet on the
2 nd Mon. The Potentate has the option of going dark in June, July and Aug. For several years, we have held
two meetings on Saturday, which seem to be popular. We are doing this in violation of our By-Laws. Imperial
By-Laws require Temples to hold a minimum of four stated meetings a year.
I plan to continue meeting as we have been. We will continue to have the nine (9) meetings; six (6) will be
on the 3rd Monday. The December election will be on the 2 nd Monday. We will have the two (2) Saturday
meetings and will be dark in the Summer .
This By-Law change would allow the Saturday meetings, and when we have a program such as Dr.
Herndon’s hospital presentation (more suited to an open forum), we do not have to tile the meeting.
The change is as follows;
Previous
3.1 Stated Meetings. A stated meeting shall be held on the third Monday of each month except the annual
December meeting which will be held on the second Monday.
Proposed change
3.1 Stated Meetings. A stated meeting shall be held a minimum of four (4) times a year.
No other change.
This change will be read at the September 15 th stated meeting and voted on at the October 15 th stated meeting.
Yours in faith,
Jim Spalding / Chief Rabban
Arabia Shrine Sportsmen Unit
By Rudy Staudt / Treasurer
Now that our 6th Annual Sporting Clays Tournament
is officially over, it’s time to thank some of the people
who helped make it a big success. I would not have
the space to mention everyone by name, but special
thanks to our Unit Members; James VanMeter, Chris
Staudt, the Divan and their Ladies, Sponsors and their
guests. We had 126 shooters competing for awards.
Many of these were major sponsors and their guests
from the oil and energy industry. Because of their
support we will soon be able to make large
contributions to our local Hospitals. Several Shrine
members were able to shoot, thanks to the generosity
of our sponsors.
Arabia Oriental Band
By: John Barron
We seem to have survived the long hot
Texas summer, and once again the
lights go up and Arabia moves back into
full swing. Looking at the calendar for the balance of
the year, we as Shriners are going to be very busy. It
will not be long before we talk about Thanksgiving and
Christmas, along with the New Year. There will be
parties and dances, socials and plenty of good food
and friendship.
We have a surprise for our Oriental Band members
as we continue to build out our unit room and furnish
it with all the comforts of home. When you visit the
band room on the east wall you will find a beautiful
mural with an oasis scene that covers much of the wall.
This stylish rendering was provided by Arabia’s own
Vernon “Pogo” King of the Clown Jewels. After some
collaboration, Pogo settled on a design that suits our
goal, “Welcome to our Oasis”. We want everyone to
feel welcome to enter our doors and enjoy first class
The day started with coffee and breakfast tacos
donated and served by Derrick Oil. After a morning
of shooting, everyone came inside for cool
refreshments and lunch. Harbor America, one of our
major sponsors, cooked and served brisket, sausage,
chicken wings and all the trimmings. The Fairbanks
Lodge guys, also Unit Members, served chopped beef
sandwiches, potato salad and homemade cookies
complements of Moe’s Bar-B-Q. Coolers full of water
were donated again by Ainsworth Trucking and placed
at shooting stations throughout the course.
By the time the next Arabian is published we should
have the final net amount that will be given to our local
Hospitals. Plans are already being made to make next
year’s event even larger.
If you have not been to a Sportsmen Unit meeting
lately, do not forget that we changed the meeting night
to the first Wednesday of each month. Our meetings
start at 7:00 P.M. Dinner is usually served before the
meeting.
fellowship with our members and ladies. Stop by and
visit when you find our doors open and have a taste
of genuine Shrine hospitality. To our brother “Pogo”,
thank you and remember there is always a
comfortable chair waiting for your visit.
September will also find the Oriental Band meeting
much as we did earlier this year with a called meeting
in the band room at 10 A.M., Saturday September 8 th .
The ladies have graciously agreed to prepare lunch
with our own version of a Mexican fiesta with
enchilada’s and all the fixings. Please e-mail or call
John Barron with your reservations so we can prepare
plenty of good food and beverages. There will be
several issues to discuss during the meeting portion,
and a discussion of plans for hosting the 2013
T.A.S.O.B. mid-winter meeting. As with the title of the
book, It Takes a Village”, there is need for everyone’s
help.
Hope to see YOU there; especially if you are a new
Noble or just one looking for a new and unique
opportunity to be a part of the continuing tradition of
Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. But do not come if you
do not want to have FUN!
Grace and I would like to thank all of you for your prayers and well wishes. We could not have made it without
so many of your prayers that God answered. It is good to know we have such great friends that we call our
shrine family…………………………………………….John and Grace Olivarri

September is in the air – Fall is just around the corner – gonna get busy around the Shrine Center!!! Hope
you all had a fun and restful summer – HERE WE GO!!!!!
Looking back a bit - June and July were a busy time - TSA in Tyler and Imperial in Charlotte with the Patrol
attending both and participating in Patrol competitions and both parades. We did manage a couple of trophies
at Imperial. The Schulenburg Parade in early August – a nice hot one!!!! The TSA victory dance at the Shrine
Center was another chance to get together and have fun!
The Patrol “First” Annual Fish Fry on the 24 th of August was a great “kick off” for this now to be Annual
Event. An opportunity to gather and visit, eat, play games and just have a good time in general, enjoying the
fruits of labor of the “fishy” Patrolmen!! A great group and great time had by all.
Saturday September 15 is a Shrine Center home run. Arabia Temple will have the first stated meeting
after the summer break, beginning at 4:30 PM, followed at 6 PM by a Mexican Fiesta dinner with all the
trimmings. Our Recorder and Oriental Guide are directing the Fiesta so it will be a meal you do not want to
miss. Following the Fiesta will be the Shrine Clubs & Units dance. See the ad for details. There will be an
excellent Country and Western band for your listening and dancing pleasure. Do not miss this fun filled
evening at the Shrine Center.
Saturday September 22 is the Bay City Rice Festival parade and Official Visit of the Divan.
In the Hospital news, our Potentate, Robert (Bob) Sharpe has been elected as Associate Board of Governors
and Hospital Ambassador. Nobles Craig Cowgill and Mathew Bell have been elected to the Board of
Governors at the Houston Hospital, while Noble Thad Miner was elected to the Board of Governors at the
Galveston Hospital. This represents a grand event for all of us, and we look forward to supporting the hospital.
Arabia Temple was the site for the Warden’s Retreat in August, which was attended by over 100 Masonic
leaders. All food prep and serving was done by The Daughters of the Nile and your Chief Ambassador. This
was a great gesture extended by Arabia to the Grand Lodge of Texas.
SUMMER – FALL ARABIA RAFFLE
Nobles of Arabia Shrine
We are off and running with our Summer & Fall Raffle. We have already collected over $7,000.00 for raffle
tickets. We will be sending out over 1,200 raffle tickets to cover this and we will have some very happy winners
at our drawing.
The purpose of our raffle is to raise needed funds for this year’s financial budget. We were surprised to
have a $30,000 increase in our building insurance due to Hurricane Ike.
WINNER’S CHOICE: A. $1,500 credit to a voyage of your choice or claim the $1,500 in cash for the
winning drawing. Winner may also choose an endowment to Arabia Temple. There are three great choices
for the winner.
SECOND: Wins his choice from first place after the winner selects his first choice.
THIRD: Wins a $500.00 gift card from Wal-Mart for a shopping spree.
The Shrine Center will be distributing the raffle tickets for sale and we will have them at this summer’s
Poker and Bingo events. Your Chief Ambassador will also be offering these at the Imperial meeting. Please
participate as much as you can. Our Potentate lives within his budget, but wishes to continue into the fall
with his “FUN” programs for all nobles.
Please contact our Shrine Center Office at 713-664-3437 if you wish to help sell raffle tickets or contact
Chief Ambassador Matthew Bell at my e-mail address, MBell90409@aol.com .
Remember: One raffle ticket for every $10.00 and BEST DEAL is 15 tickets for a $100.00 purchase.
This greatly benefits your Shrine Center, and we need your help.

Burn Patients receive “Royal” Visit
by Magen Cherry
The “Royal Shriner” truck, one of Royal Recycle and Disposal’s front-loader trucks, paid a special visit to
Shriners Hospitals for Children – Galveston on Monday morning. Just like the hospital, the bright red truck
is kid-friendly and adorned with multi-colored hand prints. The mobile billboard is equipped with Shriners
Hospitals for Children logo, phone number and website. Royal’s owner, Charles C. Gregory III, said that “It’s
our pleasure at Royal Disposal and on behalf of its family and employees and its customers, we are proud to
provide this equipment.”
Patients, employees and hospital administration all came outside to take photos with the colorful truck.
Although Royal Recycle and Disposal does not service the Galveston area, they made a special trip to
generate awareness for Shriners Hospitals for Children. Shriners Hospital – Galveston Director of operations
and patient care services Mary Jaco said, “We appreciate all that Royal Recycle and Disposal is doing to
increase the visibility of the excellence in care provided to our patients at Shriners Hospitals for Children.”
Each day thousands of people see the truck in and around Houston.
LAKE HOUSTON AREA SHRINE CLUB
by Ruben Robles
Our 4 TH of July parade was held in Kingwood this year. We had a great turnout from our Shrine Club, and we won
the 1 st Place trophy again this year.
Thanks to Jerry and Becky Berry for allowing us to decorate the float at their home and all the Nobles and ladies who
participated. Special thanks to the Motor Corps, Hot Rods, Drum and Bugle Corps for their support again this year.
After the parade, we had our annual picnic at Coaches Sports Bar, where we had a great time with plenty of hamburgers,
hot dogs and Blue Bell ice cream. Thanks to Ruben and Brenda Boyd and Don and Irene Blair for making all the
arrangements.
Come and join us at our next stated meeting on September 20 TH at the Kingwood Country Club. Please RSVP to
YOU’RE INVITED
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 2012 – ARABIA BALLROOM – 8:00 P.M.
PRESIDENTS, CAPTAINS, COMMANDERS, MARSHALS
UNITS AND CLUBS
It is in your honor that this special occasion is being held!
A fun and free evening has been planned for your enjoyment with a theme designed to bring back some
“yesteryear” memories.
Since this event is free for all nobles and ladies, there is a catch. As top officers of your unit or club,
simply announce and encourage the nobles and ladies of your group to join you at your table for the evening.
You and your lady will be presented at the beginning of the dance for the ballroom introductions.
The theme for the evening will be “Sock Hop”. Music will be of that “cool age” when all was well!! There
will be a great disc jockey to mix the music.
The dress code for the evening will be casual or, if you prefer, penny loafer shoes and saddle oxfords
for the girls.
There will be no speeches and no politics. Just fun time!!
The sponsors are your Past Potentates known as Houston Cabiri No. 81, sanctioned by the International
Shrine of North America. Simply stated, another name to identify registered Past Potentates of Shrinedom.
Circus Chairman’s Report
We are gearing up for a fun filled 2013 Circus. I would like to thank the following people
for all the volunteer time they have given me: Paul & Arlene Rickman, Fred & Maria Verhine
& grandson Aaron, Al & Sharon Sweat, Bill & Gail Hawkins, Lindsey Teinert, John McDonald,
John and Grace Olivarri and Rachel Orear. With their combined help, we have completed
the circus script and stuffed the envelopes for the mail-out in October. Please save back a few dollars to
purchase our discounted script tickets or donate to the Moms and Dads for the circus when you receive the
packet. We also completed the printing and have our circus tickets ready for purchase at Arlene’s office.
Also, many thanks to the early sales for our circus program, T-shirt ads and Mom & Dad sales. I would like
to extend special thanks to Bill McKeown, Mark Ivey, Thad Miner, Ruben Robles, Tony Macias and Marc
Miller for most of these advance sales. This will help pay for the cost of our circus pins. The men’s and
ladies’ shirts and T-shirts will be available in October. Our dark months are coming to a close, and your Divan
will be out making the appointed rounds for fun and fellowship with the nobility and their ladies. It is time to
start selling Circus again. If you get the chance to collect some auction items; go ahead and gather them up
and bring them to the Shrine Center or call Debra Slayton or Linda Lemieux, and they will make arrangements
to collect them. Remember, it helps to ASK for donations and sales; there are very few customers who will
chase you to put money in your hands for our cause. In closing, thanks to all you who have helped us in so
many ways and will help us have another successful and prosperous CIRCUS in 2013. Keep the Faith.
Don Slayton
Assistant Rabban & 2013 General Circus Chairman
