Dear Nobles,Potentate’s MessageTSA is history and we came back with 9 trophies! I was very proud of our Unitsand the way they participated. They all did a great job and, in my opinion they ALLdeserved a First Place trophy!Sharyn and I cannot begin to thank Tony and Rosa Macias enough for chairingthe Housing Committee and making sure that we all had a place to stay at theheadquarters hotel. We all owe Sherman Markowitz and Jim and Ginny Spaldinga round of applause for one great Hospitality Suite! They were assisted by Wayneand Pat Kirkland and Jackie Cottrell, and others that I know I have forgotten tomention. Rosa made some delicious tamales and many of our ladies brought their delicious home madegoodies to share with everyone! We all had a place to kick back, relax and enjoy each other’s company.Great job and our thanks to all of you for making this a fun event!I would also like to thank Jerry and Corinne Glenn, Paul and Betty Weber and Linda for their helpin making sure we got our tickets and instructions for all the events at TSA. Our photographer, JohnMcGaughy, and his Lady Sheila were there taking pictures. They took some great photos that you willsoon be able to see on the Website.Potentate Sam Khoury of El Mina had one great TSA which was hosted by Maskat Shiners in WichitaFalls. Potentate Mark Elgin, his Lady Cathi, and all of the Nobles at Masket did an outstanding job oforganizing and planning. Now, it is on to Imperial in San Antonio in July! When we come back from Imperial, we should be aboutready to start the build out of the building. Our architect told me we can put the build-out up for bid in Mid-July and have the bid back and ready foryour approval in August. Then we can begin the Unit rooms, Ballroom and Parking. You know this meansthat we will need to have the warehouse empty so that construction can begin. We need to start workingon clearing out the warehouse in July, so please get your Unit or Club organized.Sharyn and I thank you for all the support and friendship that all of you have given us. Thank you forremaining positive and helping get the Temple back on the right road to fun and fellowship and buildingour new home.Fraternally yours,Ken Aldridge, PotentateA HUGE THANK YOU!TO ALL THE NOBLES AND THEIR LADIES WHO HELPED TOMAKE THE CLASSY CHASSIS A SUCCESSFUL EVENT.2

ARABIA SPORTSMENBy: Rudy StaudtThe Sportsmen Unit held our best FishingTournament ever on May 16th at MatagordaHarbor Marina. We had 220 fishermen competingfor over $5,000.00 in cash and prizes. Theweather cooperated this year and we weighedin plenty of large fish. Several trout were over 7pounds. After paying the bills, we show a profit ofover $15,000.00. Thanks to everyone that camedown to help with set up, refreshments, sponsors,weigh-ins, take down of the canopy and clean up.A very special thanks to Potentate Ken Aldridgeand the Divan members that helped us make thisa big success. If you haven’t signed up for our annual WhiteWing dove hunt, time is running short. We arehunting the same location as last year, Castroville,TX. Contact Ron Whitmore if you are interested.Room reservations are hard to find the closer itgets to dove season. The guide says that we willbe hunting over grain fields and, as of this time, there are plenty of birds.James VanMeter and I went to two SportingClay tournaments on May 29. The first onewas held at West Side Shooting Range. It wassponsored by the company that will be helpingour unit put on a tournament on August 15. Theirtournament benefited the Muscular DystrophySociety. With their help, we hope to have between300 and 500 shooters at our tournament whichwill take place at American Shooting Range. Nextwe went to a tournament held by the Scottish Ritebenefiting Rite Care. Their first ever tournamentwas held at the Greater Houston Gun Club. RonWhitmore and other members put on a veryenjoyable tournament. The competition was great, two shooters shot a perfect score and a shoot offwas held.By the next issue, I hope to report on anothersuccessful fishing trip to Lake Calcasieu inLouisiana. A LIVING MEMORIAL LIVES ONLest we forget our Hospital Benefit Programs are year round by virtue of their continuing needs. “ALIVING MEMORIAL” can add meaning to your remembrance for a friend or loved one and will help aphysically challenged child to walk or a burned child to live. “A LIVING MEMORIAL” will answer parents’prayers. More and more of our members are taking advantage of the postage paid memorial envelopes forsuch tributes.I respectfully ask and urge you to support this portion of our Hospital Benefit Program.Dale DeFoor, High Priest & Prophet2009 Benefit Chairman“LIVING MEMORIAL” envelopes can be obtained through the Temple Offi ce.The following is a list of DONORS:Herbert Byrd Freddie & Paul Croft Chandler Signs, L. Our heartfeltthanks to the Nobility and Divanof Maskat Shriners for taking ona job of hosting the members ofthe TSA in such a short noticeafter the damage to Galvestoncaused El Mina to seek help.Galveston is recovering and hasa long way to go yet, but thededication of Galveston familieswill say much for true Texasspirit. Now it is time to make ourfinal preparations to attend theImperial session in San Antoniowhere Fiesta is a way of life. I’msure that those who make thetrip will come away with manymemorable impressions.June also marks the start ofthe dark season for the centerand many things will slow andawait the return of September. It isbeing discussed to have a sort ofdine around in the Oriental Band, having a get together with thosewho wish to fellowship. NoblePaul Corl will be recovering fromback surgery and suggested thePotato Patch in north Houston forour first get together. The idea isto have a member contact a localrestaurant and reserve seatingfor anyone desiring to come.No business to be discussed, just good food, good friends andplenty of laughter. Each monthwe would gather in a differentpart of town to dine. Sounds likefun to me.Be sure to be a part of Arabiain whatever capacity you choose.Join a unit or club, volunteer at thehospital; visit an ailing memberor his family when you can. Mostof all be aware of those aroundyou, they are watching you andthe actions you take will leave alasting impression of Masonry.Make that impression a good one.See you again in September.5

TOMBALL AREA SHRINE CLUBBy: Robert Robertson, PresidentThe rains came, but so did the BBQ Cookoffteams. Thirty-one teams, in fact , braved thetorrential downpours (5 and one-half inches ofrain in two days) to compete in the eighth annualcook-off which is the primary fundraiser for theclub. This year the event was held at the formerExxon natural gas compressor facility on OldHumble Road just south of Tomball on SH 249.Joe Bullard, owner of the property and friend of theclub, donated the use of the facility for the event andwas a most gracious host. He even participated asone of the cook teams. Recognizing the difficultythat many of the teams would have in removingtheir cookers, campers and vehicles from the sitedue to the muddy conditions he offered all theopportunity to stay longer than planned to allowthe ground to dry out and ease their departure. The weather could not dampen the spirit nor theenthusiasm of the teams. We witnessed dancingin the mud, singing in the rain and many mindlessacts of frivolity as the wind blew and lighteningflashed. Those that braved the weather and thethree inches of rain in their tents produced someof the finest bar-b-que in Texas. In addition, thesecook teams opened their hearts and their walletsduring the live auction as we saw many items farexceed what we had hoped to earn.Between the raffle, liquor wagon, auction andregistrations the club took in over $15,000 andshould net approximately $10,000 after expenses.Though this is down from previous years we feelblessed to have done this well given the extremeconditions we faced.ARABIA & IHOP - WHAT A TEAM!!!!From the IHOP National Pancake DayNewsletter…IHOP franchise group, ACG, has over 50+locations in Texas and their Regional Director ofOperations, Steve Sula, met a company wide goalof raising more that $180,000.00 for the ShrinersHospitals for Children. That particular dollaramount equals the cost of operating one Shrinershospital for a single day. He put together a programfor the month leading up to National Pancake Daywhere any guest who donated $5 or more waspresented with a $5 “bounceback” coupon. Then,he shared his idea with other franchisees in theSW Region and they started doing it.IHOP 3008, located at 15444 Hwy 105 W inMontgomery, was the Top Donating Restaurantin the Southwest Region by raising $10,240. Oneof the servers, Denise Dean, was so moved bya Shriners video, she asked local businesses todonate goods and services and hosted a benefitauction at the restaurant. More that 30 businessesparticipated and more than $4800 was raised infour hours.More IHOP News…Donor Recognition Awards are beingpresented to 8 Top Franchisees in our area. Oneof the honorees is Noble Mitchell Wang, memberof NASA Shrine Club. He owns the IHOP in ClearLake Shores on FM 2094 and also the one inWebster on NASA Road 1. Congratulations!Receiving the IHOP newsletter from TomSmith, Area Shrine Coordinator, and reading allarticles about their successes in raising moneyfor our Shriners Hospital was great. I encourageeveryone to participate on National Pancake Dayin 2010.Dale DeFoorHigh Priest and Prophet10

ARABIA SHRINERS & AMERICAN LEGION POST 61825 YEARS TOGETHER - HELPING OUR KIDSBy: Dale DeFoor, High Priest & ProphetThis year was the 25Th anniversary of the Willis Chili Cook-Off. Our special friends at American LegionPost 618 in Willis worked hard to make this year extra special. Before the event, they surprised us with theannouncement that they would “match” the net proceeds from the cook-off because of their concerns forour hospitals and their love of our “kids”. They raised over $10,000.00 so we thought that we were goingto receive a check for $20,000.00. We went to Willis on May 12 to present the Post with an appreciationplaque and to pick up the check. They surprised us again! They had rounded the check up to $25,000.00in honor of it being the 25th anniversary! Thanks to all the Nobles and Ladies that joined me in presenting the plaque to Post 618.COLONEL’S CORNERBy: Paul WeberFourth of July:Kingwood Parade (morning)Baytown 4th of July Parade (evening)August 2nd: Schulenburg ParadeAugust 15th: TSA and Imperial Victory Dance (see back page)September 5th: Alvin All American Parade (jointly with El Mina)More details will be provided when they become available for the above parades12

MOTOR CORPSBy: Jack SanchezThe winner of the Mini 18 Wheeler donated by Brad Alford was won by Richard and Susan Manning of LaPorte TX. Talk about a couple of happy people. The Bluebonnet Bike Ride held at Yankee’s Tavern is history for2009. We had 17 bikes and riders participating in this ride. The weatherwas good to us that day, a good breeze and clouds to give us shade onthe ride over. We sold raffle tickets for a mini-chopper for $5.00 each. This unit was awarded at the June meeting.Seven Red Racers and Seven Motorcycles were in attendance forthe May 9th Brenham Maifest Parade and doings. This is always a funevent and the brethren in Brazos Valley always put on a good feed withgreat Blue Bell Ice Cream. I was a little disappointed myself after the parade and the feed. I drove around theBrenham back roads and did not find one singing or happy cow. Theymust keep them hidden from the public.Being a Shriner has been important to me, but I was never as proudas I was Saturday 5/23 when a group of individuals bonded together tohelp a brother and his daughter who has been diagnosed with Cancer. They gave of themselves and had fun helping a brother. We are stillworking for this cause. Just look at what one of the brothers and hislady donated for the cause. Buy a chance for this item from any MotorCorps member. We are still practicing hard for TSA in Wichita Falls. Arabia Goldwings has to defend their 1st Place title andI am told that if a Shrine Unit takes that trophy for three years running they get to keep that trophy for good.My money is on the Arabia Drill Team. Imperial Session will be held inSan Antonio starting July 4th thru 9thWe are coming up on the hot months on the Texas Gulf Coast.Don’t forget to drink plenty of water. Keeping yourself hydrated is thebest way to enjoy your summer activities, no matter what they are. Please remember that safety is everyone’s job not just your leaders.Come join the most exciting unit within Arabia Shrine. We meet atthe Shrine Center the 2nd Sunday each month. You don’t need to havea motorcycle or red racer to support your unit. Weather permitting apractice starts at 4:00 PM during the summer months to sharpen ourskills for TSA, Imperial and Obstacle Course.
