The 2013/2014 timetable for the teaching sessions on
the Postgraduate Certificate and Postgraduate Diploma
has been changed to allow the opportunity for our
distance learners to attend one or more of the modules
face-to-face and to allow our face-to-face students
a more focused route through the programme. Each
module will be taught in a one week block with an
additional two weeks for face-to-face students given
over to peer-led sessions and the completion of
assignments.
This is a wonderful opportunity for our distance
learners to join with our face-to-face study fellows on
the one week teaching of modules. It will provide a
way of fast tracking through the course and also allow
for learning in a truly international context.
REGULATIONS
• Open to all current Distance Learning students (those undertaking the
paper-based course will be subject to a mapping exercise to determine
suitability).
• Distance Learning students MUST have completed the online
Induction module prior to attendance.
• Distance Learning students will be required to pay an additional
£200 for the one week of intensive teaching for their chosen
module (Early Bird rates may be available).
• Attendance for distance learning students is limited to a maximum of
two modules per Academic Year.
• Assignment deadlines will be strongly encouraged for all students.
• Please refer to the closing dates for individual modules
(3 months prior to module commencement).
PLEASE NOTE: Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come
first served basis therefore it is advisable to express your interest as early
as possible.
Teaching & Learning
Monday 23 rd – Friday 27 th September 2013
This module introduces participants to the major pedagogic theories and
different teaching approaches including large group, small group, role play
and facilitation. Participants reflect on their own learning and teaching
conceptions, and critique current learning style theories. Taxonomies for
skills, attitudes and knowledge are applied to lesson planning, and a variety
of tools for measuring educational environment and teacher development
are explored. Core module at Certificate level. (Closing date: 21 June 2013)
principles of ASSESSMENT
Monday 14 th – Friday 18 th October 2013
This module looks at some of the key principles of good assessment.
It introduces the student to the characteristics of good assessment, the
idea of educational outcomes, content analysis, summative assessment and
formative assessment, criterion and norm-referenced assessment, validity
and reliability, standard setting, self and peer assessment, giving
and receiving feedback. Core module at Certificate level.

Clinical skills & simulation
Monday 11 th – Friday 15 th November 2013

The aim of this module is to introduce participants to the role of simulation
in the development of consistent clinical skills practice, and will consider the
application of educational theory to simulation in medical education. This
module will develop participants knowledge and skills in using simulation as
a facilitator and in developing a programme of clinical skills education.

MANAGEMENT & LEADERSHIP
Monday 2 nd – Friday 6 th December 2013
This module aims to help students understand management and leadership
theory and reflect critically on the application of that theory to their own
management and leadership roles within medical education. This is a core
module at Diploma level but can also be taken at Certificate level. We have
had very positive feedback about this module (both from online and
face-to-face students). (Closing date: 30 August 2013)

RESearch in medical education
Monday 6 th – Friday 10 th January 2014
The aim of this module is to introduce participants to mixed methods,
qualitative and quantitative research in medical education, including
generic issues such as ethics, use of theory and quality in research. This
module will build on basic scholarship principles learned across previous
core and optional modules for the Certificate/Diploma and prepare
students for independent medical education research as part of the
Masters. Core module at Masters level. (Closing date: 4 October 2013)
curriculum planning
Monday 27 th – Friday 31 st January 2014
This module provides you with theoretical and empirical bases for
planning and designing curricula for smaller educational units such as
modules or courses (e.g. a workshop, a module for undergraduates,
final year clinical rotations), or larger programmes (e.g. undergraduate
programmes/postgraduate training programmes). Therefore, it will be
helpful for health professional educators who are involved in course
development at various levels. You do not need to have previous
knowledge or experience in curriculum development to take part in this
module. Core module at Diploma level. (Closing date: 25 October 2013)
Assessing Knowledge, skills & attitudes
Monday 24 th – Friday 28 th February 2014
This module will introduce you to a range of methods that are available
for assessment of Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes. As well as describing
these instruments and showing how they may be used effectively the
module will look at key issues relating to validity and reliability. At
the end of this module you should be able to choose an appropriate
assessment method which takes account of what it is your students are
expected to have learnt and also why they have learned it.

e-Learning
Monday 17 th – Friday 21 st March 2014
In this module students critically reflect on eLearning situated in
a variety of contexts and from various stakeholders’ viewpoints.
Legalities and ethics are introduced, with case studies presented on
social networking and discussion boards. Students are introduced to
a variety of eLearning tools, and study the design processes, including
pedagogical underpinning, encouraging stakeholder engagement and
evaluation. (Closing date: 13 December 2013)
