A MESSAGE FROM
THE UPPER SCHOOL DIRECTOR
Education of our children is a primary duty of society. Lake Highland Upper School
takes this responsibility very seriously. In partnership with parents, we strive every
day to provide the most stimulating and challenging curriculum possible. Because
it is a choice to come to Lake Highland, we must add value to our students’ daily
experience. LHPS students enjoy an enriched experience in the quality of relationships
that are fostered here between teachers and students, in the quality of instruction
and guidance they receive, and in the attention to the whole child that a low teacherstudent
ratio allows. We welcome you to experience the extraordinary education Lake
Highland provides.
ASPIRE SCIENCE RESEARCH PROGRAM
ASPIRE matches highly motivated science and math students
in the Upper School with leading researchers and research
facilities in Central Florida. Students actively participate in
real scientific studies under the direction of their mentors,
gaining first hand analytical and research skills comparable
to those offered in many college programs. These in-depth
scientific studies have resulted in co-authoring articles in
professional science journals. Lake Highland’s ASPIRE
students win a significant number of top awards each year
in local, regional, and national competitions including
International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) and Siemens
Math, Science and Techology Competition.
TECHNOLOGY INFUSED LEARNING
All students apply the newest technologies to their learning.
Individual iPads are a daily learning tool along with the latest
mathematical calculators, science lab probes, Smartboards,
document cameras and presentation tools. Our students
think critically, communicate effectively, and solve complex
problems with the efficiency of emerging technologies.
COLLEGE AND CAREER CENTER
Our exceptional College and Career Center is recognized as a
model counseling center. The highly qualified and experienced
staff offers expert, individualized counseling and a low
student/advisor ratio. The seven counselors and registrar guide
students and their parents through a highly personalized,
four-year process of curriculum choices, college selection and
application. More than 100 college admission representatives
from every region of the country visit the Center each year to
meet with interested groups of students.
ROSSMAN WRITING CENTER
The innovative Rossman Writing Center is modeled after
writing centers found on the most selective college campuses.
The Center trains a cadre of student tutors to work one-on-one
with Upper School students as they develop advanced writing
skills. Lake Highland is dedicated to improving writing skills
campus-wide; therefore, the Lower and Middle Schools also
utilize the Center’s program. Staffed by a full time faculty
member /writing specialist, the Center is a bustling resource for
academic, personal, and college essay writing.
BROADENED HORIZONS TRAVEL
Today’s students participate in a global community of
communication and media. While our classes prepare our
students to think critically, write effectively and problem
solve, we also want to prepare them for life beyond school
and their daily routines. Broadened Horizons is the extension
of education into the world around us. Domestic and
international travel, service learning and study trips provide
growth opportunities that augment the educational landscape
at LHPS. In 2013-2014 Broadened Horizons included offerings
such as class college tours, Humanities Abroad trips to Italy
& Greece and to England & France, a Romance Languages
trip to France & Spain, science field trips to the University of
Florida and the Burnham Institute, and an Advanced Marine
Research trip to Key Largo.
