This class will teach and drill thekeystrokes for the alphabet, numeral, and punctuation keys in a sequential manner. Students arechallenged with the concept of a "Time Travel Mission" in which they must master the keystrokes andcomplete required tasks to complete the Mission. The goal is for students to improve their skills untilusing the keyboard is as natural as using pencil and paper. Research has shown that the development oftyping skills in young students is linked with improved language arts skills, including gains in spelling, vocabulary, and written composition. This class will encourage the development of language arts skillsas it teaches and reinforces the essentials of keyboarding. The program utilized combines lessons withentertaining activities to reinforce each keyboarding skill as students work through lessons. They alsopractice phonetic spelling patterns, inflections of adjectives and verbs, appropriate use of punctuation, words that are frequently misspelled, synonyms, antonyms, and other elements of written language. Inaddition to language arts skills, students will learn about history, geography, and other generalknowledge topics as they hone their keyboarding techniques while traveling through time. The methodis that of incidental learning; learning which occurs while in pursuit of another task. Since learning touse the keyboard properly requires a great deal of practice and drill, our computer program is designedto keep students motivated. Students can view charts and graphs on their best speed and accuracyscores. Each class will begin right where the previous one left off, making for a clear transition andquick progression. Other keyboarding software is also utilized to keep students engaged and successful. Many students take this class multiple semesters to increase their speed and accuracy.
