PURPOSE<br />

The primary objective of this program is to encourage reading <strong>and</strong> other literacy-based activities in the home through<br />

PARP programs by:<br />

• Giving recognition to outst<strong>and</strong>ing PARP programs<br />

• Sharing outst<strong>and</strong>ing PARP ideas with other <strong>PTA</strong>s, schools <strong>and</strong> libraries<br />

• Contributing to the underst<strong>and</strong>ing of the importance of reading <strong>and</strong> other literacy activities in the home<br />

ELIGIBILITY<br />

Individual <strong>PTA</strong> units in good st<strong>and</strong>ing, individual schools <strong>and</strong> individual public libraries may apply for the Parents As<br />

Reading Partners (PARP) Award.<br />

APPLICATION<br />

Applications must be postmarked (not metered) on or before June 15. No faxes or email transmissions will be accepted.<br />

Submit applications to your region director.<br />

Region <strong>PTA</strong> winners will be notified of the <strong>New</strong> <strong>York</strong> <strong>State</strong> PARP Award winner by September 1. Groups may not win<br />

either the region or state <strong>PTA</strong> PARP Award in more than two consecutive years.<br />

SELECTION CRITERIA<br />

The award will be granted to the group that has conducted the most outst<strong>and</strong>ing Parents As Reading Partners Program<br />

during the current school year. All programs must encourage cooperative reading between parents <strong>and</strong> children for a<br />

minimum of fifteen minutes a day, <strong>and</strong> the overall program must include the words “Parents As Reading Partners”.<br />

The selection committee reviewing the applications is particularly interested in programs that encourage <strong>and</strong> educate<br />

parents <strong>and</strong> other adults in the parental role about the importance of family reading activities. The committee is also<br />

looking for easy to reproduce programs which can be accessible <strong>and</strong> affordable to all communities. <strong>Programs</strong> might<br />

include such activities as:<br />

• Providing parents <strong>and</strong> other adults with information to help their children become better readers <strong>and</strong> about fun <strong>and</strong> easy<br />

ways to add reading to their family life<br />

• Organizing reading activities that families can participate in together<br />

• Conducting cooperative projects between the home, school, public library <strong>and</strong> community<br />

• Involving family members as active participants in reading activities<br />

• Involving parents <strong>and</strong> other adults in the parental role as active participants in all aspects of the program<br />

A region <strong>PTA</strong> PARP Award is presented in each of the 16 <strong>PTA</strong> regions. From among these 16 winners, one outst<strong>and</strong>ing<br />

PARP program is chosen by the PARP Committee of the <strong>New</strong> <strong>York</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>PTA</strong>. A special PARP plaque <strong>and</strong> $200 toward<br />

expenses to attend Convention is presented to the state winner at the annual <strong>New</strong> <strong>York</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>PTA</strong> Convention.<br />

Region <strong>PTA</strong>s are encouraged to recognize their winner at their fall conference or “Presidents <strong>and</strong> Principals Dinner.”<br />

NOTE<br />

Region <strong>PTA</strong> winners are encouraged to provide a display at the next region meeting in their area. The <strong>New</strong> <strong>York</strong> <strong>State</strong><br />

winner is encouraged to attend the <strong>New</strong> <strong>York</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>PTA</strong> Convention to be recognized <strong>and</strong> receive a plaque during a special<br />

award presentation. The award-winning program will also become part of the PARP CD <strong>and</strong> will be distributed at NYS<br />

<strong>PTA</strong> PARP events.<br />
