Twin Projects Jenkins Memorial Scholarship for Teacher Education The Jenkins Memorial Scholarship for Teacher Education was inaugurated in October, 1946 as a special Golden Anniversary Project. In 1947 the fund was established as a permanent project as a living memorial to the young people who lost their lives in military service during WWII and was named for one of them, Clifford N. Jenkins, Jr., son of Margaret Jenkins, New York State PTA President 1944-1947 and National PTA President 1961-1964. The purpose of the project is to assist outstanding students in preparing for the teaching profession. AMOUNT CRITERIA $3,000 paid in installments as follows: $700 paid at the end of each of the first two academic years (usually at the end of the spring semester) after official transcript is received confirming contract compliance. $800 paid at the conclusion of the third academic year upon receipt of official transcript confirming contract compliance. $800 paid upon receipt of official transcript stating course completion, degree completion and recommendation for teacher certification. Character and personality, academic achievement and potential teaching ability. APPLICATIONS Applications will be available on the New York State PTA web site (www.nyspta.org) on or about September 15. Notification will be made to guidance counselors in public high schools that have a PTA/PTSA unit in good standing (membership and insurance paid and bylaws current, or in process, as of November 1) in their school district, and to unit/council presidents. EACH HIGH SCHOOL MAY SUBMIT TWO (2) CANDIDATES. ELIGIBILITY Public high school seniors who: 1. Plan to prepare for a teaching career 2. Plan to attend a college of the State University of New York for baccalaureate degree in education OR plan to attend a two year community college before transferring to a baccalaureate degree program in education in a college of State University of New York. 3. Have not accepted scholarships exceeding the monetary value of $16,000. SELECTION OF WINNER REQUIREMENTS DEADLINE WINNERS Applications are reviewed by a committee of educators and members of the New York State PTA Board of Directors. Candidates whose applications pass the initial screening are invited to appear for personal interviews on either of two Saturdays in March at a location of their choosing. Check the application form for the exact interview dates. No alternate dates will be scheduled. Students awarded a scholarship are required to do the following: 1. Official education curriculum transcripts will be mailed to the state office at the conclusion of the academic year. 2. If the education curriculum is changed to another major the scholarship then becomes a loan. 3. Before the final scholarship payment is distributed, the scholar must submit documentation of graduation and documentation of recommendation for New York State teaching certification. Completed applications must be sent to the New York State PTA office postmarked, not metered, by December 15. Winners, known as Jenkins Scholars, are notified on or about May 1 and receive a contractual agreement which must be signed and returned to the New York State PTA office. Twin Projects Teacher Fellowship for Graduate Study in Memory of Richard Gazzola The Teacher Fellowship for Graduate Study in Memory of Richard Gazzola was established by the New York State PTA in 1961 to encourage excellent teachers to stay in the classroom by providing an opportunity for them to improve their teaching skills, update their professional knowledge, and expand their professional horizons. In 1992, the Fellowship was named to honor a “Master Teacher”, Richard Gazzola, who served on the New York State PTA Board of Directors for many years prior to his untimely death in 1991. GRANT CRITERIA $1,000 for advanced graduate study. Academic ability, professional promise and relevance of proposed study to improve teaching proficiency and the applicant’s PTA participation. The following courses shall not be considered: • Courses being taken to meet initial teaching certification requirements • Courses being taken to meet certification requirements (or any other courses) for guidance positions • Courses being taken to meet certification requirements (or any other courses) for administrative positions Financial need is NOT a consideration. ELIGIBILITY Applicant must: 1. Be a full-time, non-substitute teacher in a New York State public school. 2. Have obtained their masters degree and have completed at least one full year of teaching in the year immediately preceding applying. 3. Be an active member of the PTA unit of the school in which they teach, or in which their children attend. The PTA unit must be a unit in good standing (membership paid, insurance paid, bylaws valid) by February 1. 4. Not have been a previous recipient of more than one New York State PTA Fellowship. No more than TWO (2) fellowships will be given to any one individual. NOTE: Applying for a grant from another source must be indicated on the application. Receipt of a comparable grant would make applicant ineligible for this Fellowship. Notification of acceptance of such a grant should be sent to the New York State PTA office immediately. APPLICATIONS ALL of the following are the responsibility of the applicant: 1. Official transcripts for graduate degree must be submitted directly to the state PTA office from the college or university. 2. Application must be accompanied by a letter of recommendation from each of the following: a) The PTA unit president attesting to the applicant’s membership and participation in the unit. b) Applicant’s principal or superintendent. 3.
