did our best not to let 

anything stop us from 

having a good time, but 

it was a challenge.

Saturday afternoon our son and his 

friends were determined to go boating. 

They were all wearing hooded sweatshirts 

as they left the dock and though they took 

towels with them, they returned with everything 

and everyone still very dry. Later on 

we enjoyed an evening boat cruise around 

East Lake. The sky was lovely, the lake rather 

quiet — and we were bundled in our jackets 

and cuddled up under blankets to stay 

warm. One lone wave runner was still out 

on the lake and we all shuddered to think 

how cold that ride must have been. 

On Sunday to and from church we saw 

a few glimpses of sunshine through the 

clouds. The temperature felt a bit warmer 

than the previous day, and the wind was 

definitely calmer. After lunch we decided 

to catch a few rays. Armed with towels and 

beach blankets “just in case” we got situated 

on our lounge chairs. Ten minutes later the 

sky was filled with clouds and we had the 

blankets pulled up to our chins and over 

our toes.

Catch some wind 

Worthington hosts Windsurfing Regatta 

The residents of Worthington, 

MN, are harnessing the power of 

the wind. 

Not for electricity via wind turbines, 

but instead they are harnessing raw 

wind power to highlight a fun sport 

and offer a weekend of unique events 

for the whole family. The 16th annual 

Windsurfing Regatta & Musical Festival 

will be held June 12-14. 

Worthington’s Lake Okabena is 

uniquely suited to host a windsurfing 

regatta as it consistently has the most 

important thing windsurfing requires 

— wind. 

“We complain about the wind here 

all the time, and now, we’re taking 

advantage of it,” said Ken Moser, one 

of the main organizers of the event. 

The Windsurfing Regatta & Music 

Festival began in 1999 and has become 

an annual event that features 

entertainment on the water and on 

the shore. Spectators can set up their 

lawn chairs on the shore and watch 

competitive windsurfing races or they 

can get out on the water for a free 

windsurfing instruction session. 

Last year, the Windsurfing Regatta 

in Worthington was the host for the 

U.S. Windsurfing National Championship. 

Worthington previously 

hosted the championships in 2004 

and 2008. 

This year, the three-day regatta is a 

part of the MoWind circuit of races 

around the Midwest. The Windsurfing 

Regatta is a straight surfing race with 

timed events. 

The regatta usually draws a crowd of 

thousands of people each day. 

But it’s not just the windsurfing that 

they come to see. There are plenty of 

other fun activities for the whole family 

over the weekend. 

Along with plenty of windsurfing, 

the Windsurfing Regatta & Music 

Festival will feature a number of local 

bands to enjoy for free. 

“After 15 years, we had a lot of 

people asking for different kinds of 

music, so we listened,” Moser said. 

This year some of the bands that 

will be performing outdoors for anyone 

who wants to pull up a lawn chair 

or blanket will include Maiden Dixie, 

Too Drunk 2 Fish, Rebel Queens and 

the Guilty Pleasures Orchestra. 

Windsurfing and music aren’t the 

only things on the agenda for the 

weekend. There’s more. 

“Each year we try to have an arts 

component,” Moser said. 

Worthington will play host to the 16th annual 

Windsurfing Regatta & Music Festival on June 

12-14 at Sailboard Beach on Lake Okabena.

They are fulfilling that goal in two 

different ways. They are bringing in 

an artist who will be doing sidewalk 

chalk art and will host a clinic to teach 

kids some of his tricks. They will also 

be hosting the Arts on the Shore arts 

and crafts event on Saturday once 

again this year. 

Saturday will also see a bunch of 

activities for the wee ones at the Kids 

Zone. From 10 a.m.- 5 p.m., kids can 

enjoy carnival games, face painting 

and playing in a giant sandbox. 

There will also be some opportunities 

for the more athletically inclined to get 

moving. Friday night will alight with 

color with the Worthington YMCA UV 

Splash Color Dash 5K. If running isn’t 

your thing then hop on a bike. 

The Regatta Bike Ride will take off 

on Saturday morning and bicyclists 

can choose from the 15, 30 and 

50-mile routes. This year there will be 

a new seven-mile family trail ride for 

those who want a quicker ride. 

Whether your interests lie in the 

direction of art, music, athletics or 

just having a fun time, feel free to grab 

some wind and sail up to Worthington, 

MN, for the 16th annual Windsurfing

Concert series set for

season 

Bring your lawn chairs and get 

ready to rock. Live at the Lake 

has a jam-packed lineup this year 

with musical acts of all kinds ready to 

entertain every Saturday night, as 

well as a few Fridays, throughout the 

summer. 

Georgia Satellites will kick things 

off on Saturday, June 13, at Preservation 

Plaza as the park also begins to 

celebrate it’s 125th anniversary. 

Other events on that kick-off weekend 

will include a sidewalk chalk 

contest on Saturday, a parade, free ice 

cream and cake, and free carriage rides 

on Sunday, as well as the afternoon 

tea fundraiser on Monday. 

“Live at the Lake has really grown 

and that’s continued this year,” Historic 

Arnolds Park marketing and 

communications manager Di Lorenzen 

said. “We’re so fortunate to have 

many great sponsors help bring all 

these bands to the park. As a nonprofit 

we wouldn’t be able to do this 

without their help.” 

With the help of those sponsors 

there are 18 concerts filling this summer’s 

Live at the Lake concert series. 

Every Saturday night from June 13 

through Sept. 5 has a band booked, 

as well as three Fridays and Sunday, 

July 5. The three-night concert stand 

for Independence Day weekend includes 

The Rumbles on Friday, Kory 

The Live at the Lake concert series will feature a number of free concerts throughout the summer. 

& The Fireflies on Saturday, and Uncle 

Kracker for a special 125th Anniversary 

concert on Sunday. 

All the concerts are free this year. 

The lineup also includes lakes area 

regulars Damon Dotson and The Nadas. 

Fans of The Rolling Stones will 

get to hear their favorite early hits 

from the British rockers with cover 

band The Rolling Stoners. Ladies 

of the 80’s are back. As is Cowboy 

Mouth. 

Reggae lovers will be eager to pack 

the park for The Wailers and country 

fans will line up for Chris Cagle. 

These are just about half the shows 

scheduled to rock the lake this summer. 

“To help celebrate the 125th we’ve 

brought in bands like The Rumbles 

who played the Roof Garden for 

years, as well as returning favorites 

like Damon Dotson and Kory & The 

Fireflies,” Lorenzen said. 

With a lineup full of acts from a 

wide variety of musical genres, thousands 

of fans, young and old alike, 

figure to pack the plaza every weekend 

this summer. 

“People that come really enjoy the

park right there as well,” Lorenzen 

said. “It’s a family venue with 

family friendly concerts so the kids 

can come and have a blast along with 

their parents.”

All that jazz 

The Headliners showcase their skills in Okoboji 

It’s time to jazz things up a bit. The Headliners are 

coming back to Okoboji to showcase their jazz 

talents for what is sure to be a packed house in 

Pomerantz Hall at Pearson Lakes Art Center. 

The group is made up of eight guys from as near 

as Iowa City; Vermillion, SD; and Omaha, NE; to 

as far as Los Angeles, Chicago and Colorado. By 

day they teach the ways of jazz music to students 

at the Reggie Schive Jazz Camp held at Iowa Lakes 

Community College in Estherville. By night they 

entertain audiences around the Iowa Great Lakes. 

“They’ve been here for more than 10 years now 

and they’re a great group of guys, great to work with 

and they have fun on stage which the audience 

enjoys,” Pearson Lakes Art Center performing arts 

director Rachelle Fratzke said. “I think they’ll entertain 

everyone and especially any jazz lovers.” 

The group’s name came from simple necessity. 

“They were our ‘headliners’ at jazz camp and we 

needed to call them something.” Iowa Lakes Community 

College instrumental director Carol Ayres 

said. “We made a CD and they needed a name, 

simple as that.” 

Ayres helped start the camp, named for the late 

music instructor Reggie Schive, which is now in its 

35th year and runs from June 7-11 in Estherville. At 

least one of the Headliners, keyboardist and vocalist, 

Tony Gulizia of Vail, CO, has been involved

at the camp every single year. Most, if not all, of 

the group members have a connection to Schive 

whether it be as a teacher and student or band mate, 

or both. 

“They’re not just wonderful musicians, but wonderful 

teachers and they have a great rapport with 

the students getting them fired up to play jazz all 

summer long,” Ayres said. 

This is the only time of the year The Headliners 

get to together as an entire group to perform. Ayres 

thinks the concert is a great way for the community 

to see the talented musicians that are teaching at the 

camp. 

“It’s a great way to show the community what 

incredible performers they are,” Ayres said. “They 

don’t play together the rest of the year and come 

together without music or practice and just play. It’s 

really impressive.” 

As far as the music is concerned, Ayres said it will 

be a great jazz concert with a variety of straightahead 

jazz, swing, ballads and more. They will also 

sit in with the Dick Bauman Big Band on Monday 

night at the art center. 

For jazz lovers it’s an opportunity not to be 

missed. 

“I personally love jazz and we don’t get much 

around here so it’s nice to have this show on the 

schedule each year,” Fratzke said.

Rock the Roof concerts kick off June 11

Because the Iowa Rock ‘n’ Roll 

Music Association is all set to 

rock and roll this summer. 

Once again the Iowa Rock ‘n’ Roll 

Music Association will be hosting 

their Rock the Roof concert series on 

10 consecutive Thursday evenings 

at The Roof Garden in Arnolds Park 

Amusement Park. 

“This is our 13th year of Rock the 

Roof concerts. It has evolved and 

become an expected tradition,” said 

Andrea Wiesenmeyer, the director of 

operations with the Iowa Rock ‘n’ Roll 

Music Association. “We have people 

who will call here and base their vacations 

around whose going to be playing 

when.” 

The Rock the Roof concerts take 

place every Thursday evening at 6 

p.m. and will start on June 11. 

This first concert is being called 

“Throwback Thursday” to help celebrate 

the Arnolds Park Amusement 

Park’s kick-off of their 125th anniversary. 

To celebrate the event, they will 

only be charging a $2 admission fee 

for the Rock the Roof concert on June 

11 instead of the normal $5. 

“We are excited to help Arnolds 

Park Amusement Park kick off their 

125th anniversary with our first Rock 

the Roof for the summer. The park has 

been a large part of our history and we 

are excited to help them celebrate all 

summer long,” Wiesenmeyer said. 

The first concert will feature The 

Trademarkz and the DC Drifters. 

Many of the members of The Trademarkz 

were originally in the band 

The Fabulous Traidmarx. The band 

is made up of Tim Horsman on keyboards, 

Greg Hoekstra and Bob Rusk 

on trumpet, Dennis Johnson on sax, 

David Lady on guitar and they will be 

joined by Mick Buckley. 

The DC Drifters are based in Austin, 

MN, and have been playing old time 

rock ‘n’ roll for the past several decades 

all over the Midwest. 

The rest of the bands for the 

10-week lineup will offer something 

for everyone. 

“Rock the Roof has a great summer 

lineup this year. You’ll see some familiar 

names as well as some new ones. 

We tried to get a little bit of something 

for everyone in this year’s lineup,” Wiesenmeyer 

said. 

The Rock the Roof concerts generally 

bring in a crowd that numbers 

around 600-1,000 people each night. 

One new thing they are trying out 

this year is to partner with a different 

local non-profit for each of the concerts 

in an attempt to give back. 

“One dollar of each ticket will be 

donated back to a local non-profit 

this year,” said Wiesenmeyer. “It’s a 

great way for us to reach out to some 

other non-profits in the community. 

It will also help boost community 

awareness for us and for them.” 

Some of the non-profits they will 

be partnering with over the summer 

include Camp Foster, 4-H, Discovery 

House, Dickinson County Trails and 

the Humane Society of Northwest 

Iowa. The Iowa Rock ‘n’ Roll Music Association 

is on a mission to preserve 

the legacy of rock ‘n’ roll in Iowa, all

Spencer’s Flagfest set for June 12-14 

Flags are about to take center stage in Spencer, 

IA. 

For the past 31 years the second weekend 

is June has been set aside to celebrate something 

special. And this year, things won’t be any different. 

The 31st annual Spencer Flagfest celebration 

will be held June 12-14. 

It all began back in 1984 when a group of 

people decided to start an event that celebrated 

patriotism and community spirit. When that 

was combined with the fact that Spencer is one 

of the flag cities of Iowa, it seemed natural to 

adopt the flag theme for the annual celebration. 

All these years later, the flags are still flying 

high. Spencer’s Grand Avenue becomes a sight 

to see. Flags from all 50 states are flying alongside 

U.S. territory flags. 

Don’t worry. They don’t forget about Old 

Glory. The U.S. flag is predominantly displayed 

throughout the weekend. 

Events will officially kick off on Friday. For 

movie lovers, you can grab a blanket or a lawn 

chair and head to East Leach Park for the movie 

in the park. This year’s feature film will be “Big 

Hero 6.” 

Saturday is jam-packed with events and things 

get started at a brisk pace with the annual Run 

for the Sun 5K/10K. 

They say that’s there’s nothing more American 

than apple pie, and to go along with the Stars & 

Stripes waving overhead, it seems only fitting to 

also include that particular pie.

in East Leach Park. 

The biggest attractions on Saturday are the parade 

and the Grand Cruise and Tunes on Grand 

Avenue. The Grand Cruise features both cars and 

music from the days of old. 

Activities continue on Sunday with the traditional 

flight breakfast at the Northwest Iowa 

Regional Airport, where pancakes and sausage 

are served to all who drive in or fly in. 

Other Sunday activities will include a free 

swim at the Spencer Family Aquatic Center and 

performance by the Spencer Municipal Band in 

the afternoon. 

Flagfest is the place to be for those who love 

flags, fun and more flags. F

Pedaling 

for a 

purpose 

Bike ride seeks to promote 

water conservation 

Water. It’s what brings thousands 

upon thousands of 

vacationers flocking to the 

Iowa Great Lakes every year. It’s also 

something we take for granted. 

But that’s something the people at 

the Dickinson County Conservation 

Board and the Dickinson County Soil 

& Water Conservation District are 

hoping to change. 

The We Pedal Clean Water bike ride 

will be held on Saturday, June 13, and 

will hopefully fulfill two purposes. 

“It’s not only going to be educational, 

but it’s also great to get people out and 

moving during the summer,” said Kiley 

Roth, the community relations coordinator 

at the Dickinson County Nature 

Center. “Bike rides are a great way to 

draw in people of a variety of ages.” 

We Pedal Clean Water is a 20-mile 

ride around West Lake Okoboji that 

will include several stops where 

people will be able to learn about the 

efforts local people and organizations 

are making to positively impact water 

quality. 

Here is a list of the stops and the 

topics that will be discussed at each 

stop: 

1. Drainage District No. 22: What is a 

watershed? 

2. Historic Arnolds Park: How pervious 

pavers filter water. 

3. Milford Municipal Utility shoreline: 

The role native vegetation plays in 

stabilizing shorelines. 

4. West O Beer: Sustainable water use. 

5. Garlock Slough wetland complex: 

Wetland Restoration & Enhancement 

programs. 

6. Emerson Bay State Park: Soil health. 

7. Iowa Lakeside Lab: Water quality 

research and monitoring. 

8. Okoboji View Golf Course: Wetland 

restoration project. 

9. Monarch Cove: How bio-cells function. 

Even though a 20-mile bike ride 

may seem daunting to some it’s an 

event that was planned for a variety of 

athletic abilities. 

“It’s not a group ride so people can 

go at their own pace. They can take off 

and ride the trail by themselves and 

they can stop whenever they want,” 

said Roth. “The event will run from 

8 a.m. to noon and the presenters 

will just keep presenting during that 

whole time.” 

People can register the morning 

of the ride, which will start at the 

Dickinson County Nature Center and 

riders will return there to conclude 

the event. For people who aren’t ready 

to tackle the ride, but want to learn 

about some water conservation ideas, 

they can simply come to the nature 

center and talk with local conservation 

professionals. 

While getting out and moving is 

important, the organizers also want to 

stress that water conservation is something 

that everyone can do and it can 

be something small. 

“I hope the that everybody who 

comes and participates that day sees 

something along the route or talks to 

somebody who is doing this or that at 

their home already and is inspired to 

try something new,” said Jim Sholly, 

the Iowa Great Lakes watershed coordinator. 

“Efforts don’t have to be 

grand structures that are eyesores — 

the majority of things being done are 

really easy to do.” 

One small idea that can have an 

impact on water quality include ceasing 

to mow all the way down to the 

waters’ edge and instead just letting it 

grow and replacing that ornamental 

grass with native species. 

“We hope that we are able to 

educate people who might not know 

much about water conservation, but 

who come because they like bike riding 

and that they will learn something 

in the process,” Sholly said. 

Water conservation is a subject that 

should concern everyone as it will 

impact everyone, according to Sholly. 

“Clean water is something that we 

often take advantage of and especially 

in this area we base our livelihood or 

weekend recreation activities around 

it. But it’s also something we often 

take for granted,” said Sholly. “That’s 

why we want to work to ensure the 

water quality for future generation, 

not just our generation.” F

Lineup set for annual Parade of Homes 

In this parade the floats don’t move. Instead visitors tour each of the floats 

themselves at seven locations throughout the Iowa Great Lakes area. And 

the “floats” are actually a variety of homes set up for the 2015 Parade of 

Homes hosted by the Home Builders Association of Northwest Iowa. The 

parade is set for June 6-7 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
