Dear Colleague, In my 30 years at William Hill, I have been fortunate enough to have worked in almost every part of our business and I can therefore say without fear of reproach, that not only are we a great company but we’re also a very responsible one. You are all too well aware that over recent years the industry has changed significantly and that our business is the subject of far greater scrutiny than it has been historically. This is not a bad thing, it’s just a shame that we are often judged by commentators who simply don’t understand all the great things we do at William Hill. Each year we produce a Corporate Responsibility Report that showcases not only some of our people but also some significant areas of specific focus. This year we have also focussed on your great work in our communities and significantly, on some of the facts; the real answers to the questions often posed and the reasons why William Hill is such a great place to work. This booklet takes some of the highlights from the full report and also, includes the personal commitments that I and my senior team have made; I’d be grateful if you could share these with your team. I am very proud of our business and the positive difference we are making together and you should also expect to hear something soon about our new community policy; we’ll continue to make a difference together. MEET OUR COLLEAGUES. We are incredibly proud of our diverse workforce. We employ thousands of people from a variety of backgrounds and of all ages. We pride ourselves on ensuring that the training and career development we offer means that everyone has an opportunity to reach their full potential. BECKY’S STORY. SEAN’S STORY. JULIE’S STORY. CHLOE’S STORY. Becky is only 23 but she already knows that training people is her calling. Becky joined in 2010 and made an immediate impression, reaching Deputy Manager within just nine months. Her talent was spotted and she was one of 50 colleagues selected to participate in Springboard, our bespoke female leadership programme. Becky is currently shadowing an Area Training Manager so she is well on her way to achieving her goals. Sean joined William Hill in 2007 as a CSA. He was looking for a place where he could build a career. He had previous management experience and knew that William Hill had a reputation for helping their people progress. So he joined with an eye on the fast track deputies course. Just eight years on he is an Area Manager, responsible for 135 shops and 750 people. Julie walked through the doors of her local shop in 1989, looking for a part time job that would fit around raising her family. She wasn’t sure this would be for her, but a friend recommended it. It seems to have suited her because 26 years on she is still enjoying looking after her customers as the manager of her own shop in Leeds. Chloe joined in September 2014, aged 19, and is one of around 150 apprentices. The training she is receiving has meant that just six months on she is already getting a taste of what it is like to manage a shop as part of the Retail Shop Manager course. Her goal is to be managing her own shop by her 21st birthday. The opportunity to earn whilst she learns means she is right on track to achieve that goal.
