HISTORY: There are profound traditi<strong>on</strong>s to use and<br />
protect <strong>the</strong> resources of nature <strong>in</strong> <strong>Lithuania</strong><br />
Plenty of archaeological rema<strong>in</strong>s, historic metrics and folklore all<br />
proclaim <strong>the</strong> h<strong>on</strong>our-founded relati<strong>on</strong>s of <strong>the</strong> ancient <strong>Lithuania</strong>n<br />
people with nature.<br />
In deep historical times such terms as sa<strong>in</strong>t tree and sa<strong>in</strong>t <strong>forest</strong><br />
underl<strong>in</strong>ed that <strong>the</strong>se objects were untouchable.<br />
In IX-XII centuries Dukes owned lands and <strong>forest</strong>s, and <strong>Lithuania</strong>n<br />
Grand Dukes awarded <strong>forest</strong>s and lands to nobility.<br />
In <strong>the</strong> 15th century, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Lithuania</strong>n Grand Duke chartered townspeople<br />
to use <strong>forest</strong>s around <strong>the</strong> town for <strong>the</strong> pastures provid<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>y left<br />
hollow trees al<strong>on</strong>e.<br />
In summary,<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>itial noti<strong>on</strong>s of relati<strong>on</strong> to <strong>forest</strong> formed mostly<br />
because of <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>fluence of nature worship. The ancient<br />
faith and awareness of <strong>the</strong> <strong>forest</strong> guard functi<strong>on</strong> had<br />
helped to protect <strong>forest</strong>s.<br />

Up to <strong>the</strong> present day timber producti<strong>on</strong> represents <strong>the</strong> primary<br />
ec<strong>on</strong>omic value derived from <strong>forest</strong>s.<br />
Timber export has an important role <strong>in</strong> ec<strong>on</strong>omic development<br />
for many sectors.<br />
Today <strong>the</strong> role of <strong>forest</strong>s as a renewable domestic energy<br />
resource, replac<strong>in</strong>g n<strong>on</strong>-renewable energy, is steadily<br />
<strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Forestry solves some social problems: it also serves as an<br />
important source of employment <strong>in</strong> rural areas.<br />

Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore, <strong>forest</strong>s provide o<strong>the</strong>r<br />
natural resources <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g berries,<br />
mushrooms, hazel nuts and also game<br />
animals ipso facto attract<strong>in</strong>g people.<br />
For certa<strong>in</strong> groups of <strong>the</strong> populati<strong>on</strong>,<br />
ma<strong>in</strong>ly <strong>in</strong> rural areas, <strong>the</strong>se resources are<br />
an important additi<strong>on</strong>al source of <strong>in</strong>come.<br />
A significant part of <strong>the</strong> populati<strong>on</strong><br />
also enjoys hunt<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
