The SUMMER SKILLS MATH PROJECT contains a variety of fun, diverse math activities to help your child review skills taught in third grade, such as basic and advanced addition and subtraction, basic multiplication and division, fractions, decimals, and practice in the reading and solving of story problems. The SUMMER SKILLS READING PROJECT contains a variety of reading and writing activities to help your child practice basic skills of reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, spelling, phonics, and writing. Project activities are designed to be completed within a ten week time frame. You choose the activities you and your child will complete each week. Since activities become more challenging as the weeks progress, your child should complete the activities in the order that they are presented. Follow these steps if you would like your child to participate. 1...Navigate to the Westy Home page at www.whsd.org 2...Click the Elementary School link under the Our Schools tab. 3...Click on Links under the Elementary School link. 4...Scroll down to view the Grade 3 links. 5...Click the WHES End-of-Third Grade Summer Skills Project link. 6...Read the PARENT INFORMATION LETTER and the VERIFICATION FORM. 7...View the Math Skills and Reading Skills activities. 8...Download the activities for your child to complete. NOTE: If you are unable to download the activities, you make pick up Math / Reading Skills packets in our school office AFTER JUNE 28. IMPORTANT: If your child completes the Math and / or Reading Summer Skills Project(s), please complete the VERIFICATION FORM.
Helpful Learning Tips… In order for your child to get the most from the activities, consider using these helpful tips to make the learning experiences interesting and fun. ☺ Set aside a time each day for completing the activities. Make it a time when your child will be most ready to learn, and make it a routine. ☺ Provide a pleasant, quiet place to work. This means no TV or noise in your child’s work area. Make sure there is a sufficient light source. ☺ Review in advance the activity your child will complete that session. This way you will be able to familiarize yourself with the lesson, as well as what materials will be needed to complete it. Materials are usually noted in the upper right-hand corner of each page. ☺ Have your child read directions aloud beforehand to make sure your child understands the activity. Instructions are written for the child, but your child may need help understanding them. ☺ Reward your child for good effort. Praise all of your child’s work. It’s the effort, not necessarily the end result, that counts most. Congratulations to you if, at this point, you have decided to participate in the WHES End-of-Third Grade Summer Skills Project. This shows that you are concerned about the education and development of your child. You are willing to go that extra mile to ensure that your child continues to grow and learn over the summer months. Showing your child how important learning is to you will motivate your child by your example. Nothing delights your child more than individual attention from his or her favorite adult---YOU!
