ICU Patient Guide— Frequently Asked Questions in the ICU 10 In 2000, The CHEST Foundation embarked on an endowment campaign to provide a funding base for education and awards programming. From this effort, the Distinguished Scholar Program was developed to support ACCP members who are working to improve clinical chest medicine. Today, ACCP members and patients alike benefit from the work of distinguished scholars in critical care medicine, respiratory health, and thrombosis.

Guntupalli, MD, FCCP, was named the Second Eli Lilly and Company Distinguished Scholar in Critical Care Medicine in 2007 for her project, “Development and Validation of the Educational Materials for Use by the Critical Care Health-care Team (Physician Trainees, Nurses, Respiratory Therapists, Physician Assistants), and Patient/Family for Use in the Critical Care Units.” A goal of this project is to enhance and improve communication between patients, families, and physicians. To meet this goal, Dr. Guntupalli created the brochure, ICU Patient Guide—Frequently Asked Questions in the ICU, after conferring with colleagues who supervise The Foundation’s Critical Care Family Assistance Program in their hospitals. Using easy-to-read text, photos, and drawings of medical equipment, Dr. Guntupalli instructs family members of ICU patients on what to expect, why certain procedures are followed, and who to speak UCI PREGUNTAS FRECUENTES SOBRE LA UCI 11 Spanish Arabic to for important information in an ICU unit.
