The CHEST Foundation and the Kellogg School of Management Case Competition 2009 4 According to the World Health Organization, rates of smoking in developing nations, such as China and India, are on the rise. The CHEST Foundation partnered with the Carol and Larry Levy Social Entrepreneurship Lab at the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University, to combat this trend with its second case competition. The 2009 competition challenged graduate students to develop cases to promote the development of practical business models to mitigate the negative impact of smoking in China and India.
TOBACCO PREVENTION Eight teams submitted cases that detailed a variety of solutions for tobacco control. John C. Alexander, Jr., MD, FCCP, and Allen I. Goldberg, MD, Master FCCP, served as mentors, and Kalpalatha K. Guntupalli, MD, FCCP, was a guest lecturer and resource to the teams. Renowned tobacco control expert, Judith MacKay, MD, FCCP, and Janet Han, MD, FCCP, who is based in China, also served as resources to the teams. The two finalist teams presented their projects at a culmination dinner on May 12, 2009, to a panel of judges, which included CHEST Foundation Trustees Robert F. Barnett III, and D. Robert McCaffree, MD, Master FCCP. The winning team, Team Pulmo, wrote a business plan for one of India’s largest employers, Indian Railways. The team developed a viable tobacco control program to incorporate into Indian Railway’s employee health services, thus reaching 1.4 million employees and family members. The program focuses on cessation and includes teambuilding exercises, contests, education programs, telephone quit lines, and pharmaceuticals. Team Pulmo projects the model will yield 1,000 successful quitters in the pilot phase alone, resulting in a 5 gain of 8,000 life-years and 127 full-life outcomes. Full-scale implementation of the program is projected to save 1,500 to 11,000 lives. The CHEST Foundation awarded Team Pulmo $15,000 for its outstanding case. The second-place team, Novo Aer, received $5,000 for its case to address the high smoking rates in China through Quit Smoking Clubs. These smoking cessation clinics are connected with pregnancy clinics and assist expectant mothers and fathers. The cessation clinics address tobacco addiction using virtual reality, nicotine replacement therapy, discounted gym memberships, professional counseling, and a supportive cessation community. The case competitions encourage bright young people to be engaged in serious health-care issues and bring an element of innovation and possibility to pressing public health issues. This unique partnership between The Foundation and a business school is a model for others to follow for making a difference in the world. Enduring value.
