The CHEST Foundation’s Ambassadors Group
The CHEST Foundation’s Ambassadors
Group volunteers, networks, and
educates on behalf of The Foundation to
promote improved lung health in local
communities and beyond. The group’s
help and support significantly contribute
to the good work of The Foundation year
after year.
Active in Schools With Lung LessonsSM Ambassadors Group members continue to actively
present the Lung LessonsSM program in schools.
This past year, Mangala Krishnamurthy presented
to children in various grades at her local school
in Alabama. Her niece, Nikhila Janakiram, a youth
Ambassador, presented The CHEST Foundation’s
tobacco prevention educational program to
elementary schoolchildren in her neighborhood
school and at a library in Saratoga, CA. Kathy Wilder
taught the basics of Lung Lessons SM to school
nurses in several schools in Anchorage, and now
the nurses present the program to students on an
annual basis. In a closely related project, for the
past 4 years, Monir Almassi has successfully organized
walk/runs at three Wisconsin area schools to
follow up her Lung Lessons SM presentations.
Supporting the AMA Alliance Screen-Out!
Program
The Ambassadors Group is actively supporting the
AMA Alliance Screen-Out! Program. The Alliance
Screen Out! Campaign, guided by research and
evidence that supports a causal link between
movie smoking and teen smoking initiation, is
working to change the Motion Picture Association
of America’s rating system so that new movies
showing smoking or tobacco use will be rated “R.”
Mary Anne McCaffree, MD, FCCP, gave a presentation
to the Ambassadors Group at its business
meeting in March. Members agreed to support
the AMA Alliance program by sharing Foundation
tobacco prevention educational products with the
AMA Alliance. Moving forward, the Ambassadors
Group will welcome opportunities and projects to
support efforts to rid the nation of tobacco promotion
that lures children into a lifetime of tobacco
addiction.
