Lisa Mostafa, Hearing Instrument Technology
From Hair to Hear
Earn a CNC Operator
certificate in just
two quarters
Step foot into any modern machine or
manufacturing shop, and chances are
you’ll find computer numerical control
(CNC) machines. The equipment that
increases accuracy and efficiency, and
allows parts to be cut at a high speed in
a short amount of time has become an
integral part of the manufacturing and
machining industry.
To help meet the training needs of this
evolving industry, Bates will offer a
two-quarter CNC Operator certificate
program. The first quarter begins Nov.
28. Students will learn to use a variety of
machine tools, including CNC equipment.
Participants learn to make metal parts
to precise specifications, and gain
knowledge of the working properties of
metal, capabilities of machine tools and
equipment, and standard shop practices
that prepares students for employment
in all types of factories, industries and
maintenance shops.
Upon successful completion, students
will receive a CNC Operator Certificate
of Training. Students may be eligible for
tuition-free training through Workforce
Central. Contact Career Advisor LeaEllen
Licensed cosmetologist Lisa Mostafa first
considered a career change in 2010 when she
separated from her husband.
The mother of a five-year-old boy, Lisa had
been working as a hair stylist since 1993 and
wanted to secure a better living for her family.
At first, she thought she’d enter the medical
field as a nurse. “I was gearing up to pursue my
nursing credentials and realized I was in my
mid-40s, and it would take
more time than I had
to give,” said Lisa.
She then began to explore the field of hearing
instrument technology. “During the last five
years of my father’s life, he needed hearing
aids,” said Lisa. “This experience piqued my
interest in the field, so I started talking with
people in the industry.”
Through her research, she discovered Bates.
“Bates is one of only two colleges that offer the
Hearing Instrument Technology program in the
entire nation,” said Lisa, who enrolled in the
program spring 2011.
“One of the things I enjoy most is
working with my peers. I am full of
respect for them,” she said. “It’s
a small group, and we work well
together. I also appreciate the
one-on-one instruction.
[Instructor Dr. Marci Leong] is
super knowledgeable and very
approachable. She’s always here
for us,” she added.
The Hearing Instrument
Technology program will
prepare Lisa for the state
license exam she will take
when she graduates with her
associate of technology degree
summer 2012. •
