MSc Nurs<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Studies</strong><br />

Taught by mixed mode or distance learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

As a nurse, you may work <strong>in</strong> any area of the world as part of the<br />

largest s<strong>in</strong>gle health care profession. You are therefore ideally<br />

placed to improve the quality and delivery of health care to<br />

patients and their families. There is considerable and compell<strong>in</strong>g<br />

evidence to show that nurses make a difference to the health and<br />

wellbe<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>in</strong>dividuals, families and populations (Spilsbury and<br />

Meyer 2001, Cunn<strong>in</strong>gham 2004). One example from Corner et<br />

al (2003) is the impact that specialist nurses have <strong>in</strong> cancer care,<br />

where they have been identifi ed to improve outcomes for patients<br />

with cancer.<br />

This excit<strong>in</strong>g MSc <strong>in</strong> Nurs<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Studies</strong> from <strong>Oxford</strong> <strong>Brookes</strong><br />

University is offered as an onl<strong>in</strong>e distance learn<strong>in</strong>g or mixed mode<br />

course. It is open to UK, EU and <strong>in</strong>ternational nurses who wish to<br />

undertake advanced postgraduate study with a premier academic<br />

<strong>in</strong>stitution that has close l<strong>in</strong>ks with nationally and <strong>in</strong>ternally<br />

recognised cl<strong>in</strong>ical sett<strong>in</strong>gs and expert practitioners. This course<br />

is delivered with a team of lecturers and researchers with a wealth<br />

of practice and research experience and a rich track record of<br />

research publications <strong>in</strong> areas of relevance to nurs<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

The MSc <strong>in</strong> Nurs<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Studies</strong> is designed to progress your practice<br />

to an advanced level, enabl<strong>in</strong>g you to develop as a senior<br />

practitioner, educator, researcher or manager. This course will help<br />

you to develop your practice, with confi dence that it is based on<br />

the best available evidence to make effective nurs<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>terventions.<br />

Specifi c entry requirements<br />

Access to this course is open to qualifi ed nurses who hold up-todate<br />

and current registration with<strong>in</strong> their country of orig<strong>in</strong>, who meet<br />

the follow<strong>in</strong>g criteria:<br />

• Normally hold a UK honours degree or equivalent overseas degree<br />

from a recognised <strong>in</strong>stitution.<br />

• Students who do not hold a fi rst degree or equivalent will be<br />

required to submit an assignment which will be taken <strong>in</strong>to account<br />

as part of their application.<br />

• Applicants whose home language is not English must<br />

demonstrate that their level of English is appropriate for study at<br />

post-qualify<strong>in</strong>g level with fl uent writ<strong>in</strong>g skills. The English<br />

language requirements are IELTS level 6.5 or above, TOEFL<br />

600/250 or above, or equivalent. For details please contact the<br />

• Applicants must hold current nurs<strong>in</strong>g registration with<strong>in</strong> their home<br />

• Due to the nature of this course, each student will need<br />

reliable access to the <strong>in</strong>ternet, preferably through a broadband<br />

connection. You will need to have good IT skills and be profi cient<br />

<strong>in</strong> the use of <strong>in</strong>ternet and onl<strong>in</strong>e communication. For m<strong>in</strong>imum<br />

Note for International applicants. This course does not:<br />

• lead to registration with the Nurs<strong>in</strong>g and Midwifery Council (NMC)<br />

<strong>in</strong> the UK,<br />

• have a practice based component,<br />

• lead to employment with<strong>in</strong> the UK while study<strong>in</strong>g or after you have<br />

completed the course.<br />
