Merging of Cultures through Music
by Collin Spaid
Mr. Curtis Ethington, prior U. S. Army member and Roverado resident, is working side-byside
with Mr. Sean Boyle, AMHS Band Director, to make the May concert in Pordenone a success.
AMHS band students traveled to Roverado on 18 April to practice with members of the Roverado
band for the upcoming joint concert. Ethington stated that the opportunity gave the American
and Italian adolescent and teen musicians an opportunity to get used to another directing and playing
style.
Ethington and Boyle met last year and are trying to prove two concepts. One is that music is
an international language; and the other point is that the military people here aren’t just Air Force
or Army members. They have and are families with outside, cultural interests. Music is one of
those interests.
The people that are helping the concert go forward are school staff, the base commander,
and Italian commander. Ethington personally knows some of the students like Michel and David
Conway and Grace Thompson, all of whom play in both bands.
Ethington is an American citizen from Kentucky. Now he is an Italian volunteer on- and-off
base. Ethington has been in Italy since 1986, is married to an Italian woman, and has children attending
Italian schools. He came here because of the Army.
The concert will be performed on Friday evening, 11 May 2012. Proceeds will benefit the
children’s ward at the Cancer Research Hospital (CRO) on Mountain Highway, Aviano, Italy.
The CRO is funded by the Italian Government but only as far as medical treatmen is concerned.Italian
teachers volunteer their time after school. The proceeds will go towards the purchase
of school supplies, including text books.
Members of both bands rehearse in the church recreation center.
Softball...
Softball results: The Aviano Lady Saints Softball team beat Sigonella 18 – 3 and 13 – 3 on Friday of
last week. On Saturday, they lost to 3peat European Champions Naples by scores of 13 – 6 and 12
– 5. A special thank you to our super softball and baseball parents! Not only do they help to coach
our teams, but they shoveled and hauled mud, dug and refilled drainage trenches, prepared the
fields, kept score, picked up and prepared lunches for all four teams, and of course cheered on our
athletes! Without them, those games may have been cancelled due to inclement weather. Thank
you Aviano parents and other community members!
The STEM Initiative
The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA), in collaboration
with the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM),
launched a new Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics
(STEM) initiative in DoDEA schools worldwide. The STEM initiative is
partnership between DoDEA students and educators, and Federal
STEM professionals.
a
As part of this initiative my students participated in a conversation
with the one of the environmental engineers employed by the EPA who was teaching a class to students
in Germany. With the use of our infocus projector, an external microphone and a webcam
connected to my desktop we were able to see our guest engineer, ourselves and one other classroom.
We could hear her and the other classroom as we had a one
hour conversation about environmental engineering, education and
training, career opportunities and many other related topics like GIS
(geographic information systems). She discussed 2 year degrees
and beyond and definitely stimulated interest in engineering with my
students.
It was a great experience to have students get to interact and question
someone in the field of environmental engineering.

AMHS
Earth Day
This year on April 25 and 26, Ms. James
had her 10 th annual Earth Day Clean up.
Ms. James’ 7 th grade science classes along with help from JROTC, the Environmental club, and volunteers,
went around Area 1 and Area 2 to pick up trash and cigarette butts. Over the last ten years
this has been the lowest total of cigarette butts. This year, there were a total of 5,810 cigarette
butts picked up! That is 291 packs of cigarettes and a sum of $2,910! Ms. James period 3 class collected
cigarettes on Area 2 and had the most cigarettes with a total of 2,138. Luckily over the past
three years there has been a drop
in numbers. During the 2009-2010
clean up there was a total of
11,410 cigarettes! Each year since
then the numbers have declined.
After another successful clean up,
Ms. James is ready for next year’s
Earth Day and is hopeful that the
numbers will keep declining.
Thanks for those that came out to support the track team Saturday. It was our last home
meet. We honored our 10 great seniors following the field events. We did have to stop about two
hours short of finishing due to lightning in the area but we still have some additions to our European
qualifiers. To date, we have:
Mixing Up Success with The Hunger Games in Aviano
by Mary Jo Williams, Teacher, English Language Arts 7
What do you get when you mix a great novel, a bunch of seventh
graders in English Language Arts, fun projects, and just a pinch of incentive—a
private showing of the much-anticipated movie before anyone else
on base gets to see it? You get a big batch of Hunger Games excitement!
Project-based learning helped students dig into the big ideas in the
novel. Using their research skills, students created survival backpacks like
the one Katniss Everdeen snatched from the Cornucopia. In case you’ve
been living under a rock, or simply have not had time, we urge you to read
The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins. Next up, each student used concise
language to create a Haiku poem about his or her favorite character.
This resulted in lots of Haiku poetry about Katniss, Peeta, and Gale, but
Rue, Cato, Prim, and Haymitch also got their due. When nearly finished
with the novel, students explored the symbolism in the book, sharing their
Rebecca VanMarter and Teresa
Stevens eagerly anticipate the
movie premier.
findings via PowerPoint or Prezi. A final project, creating a mobile, resulted in a beautiful hallway
full of art that tall people are still dodging. Take that, tall people!
The most exciting and fun project, though: the Aviano Tribute Challenge Simulation. After
text marking and summarizing the rules of the games (after all, Continuous School Improvement
goals must be met), our very own Effie Trinket(s) conducted a reaping in each classroom to determine
our 24 tributes. Chadeya Miller created professional-looking posters and movies that brought
the Tribute Simulation to life. The tributes sought sponsors to help save them from elimination, but
many tributes succumbed quickly to arm wrestling, book holding, quiz offs, and rock/paper/scissors
challenges. With only 15 tributes left in the competition, the entire seventh grade gathered on a
bright, sunny seminar afternoon to witness the games and seek a victor.
Challenges included cross-curricular activities: a Mayan calendar challenge from Ms. Thompson
in geography; a fake cow eyeball eating contest from Ms. James in science (yes, Maddy King…
they were really marshmallows); prime / non-prime number and ―Haymitch Says‖ challenges from
Mrs. Dahlstrom in math; and a race with cart wheels to honor Ms. Burelli in P.E.
At long last, Wesley Biggs was crowned the winner and lone survivor of the Aviano-style Hunger
Games by Effie Trinket (Liz Soto). Wesley’s response: ―This whole thing was just incredibly
awesome.‖ No one went away empty handed, though. All the seventh graders raced to the field to
grab specially monogrammed pencils with sayings like PEETA, THE BOY WITH THE BREAD, THE GIRL
WHO WAS ON FIRE, and I SURVIVED THE HUNGER GAMES.
The Hunger Games cross-curricular idea spilled over into classrooms, as well. Students created
a Venn diagram in Geography to compare North Korea to Panem. This activity provided much
discussion in English Language Arts as students later began to try to create their own Utopias. In
math class, students used lessons about scale to map out the arena and create ―mutattions‖ different
from those in the novel.
Students gathered in groups in language arts to work out what the producers and directors
just HAD to include in the movie. Then, on another bright day,
all the seventh graders and the lucky chaperones piled into
buses to travel to the base theater to
watch the movie. Clutching popcorn
and soft drinks, we all hoped the movie
would live up to the book. You know
what? For the most part, it did.
Chadeya Miller’s poster of all 24 Aviano 7 th Grade Tributes.
Wesley Biggs the lone survivor
and victor of the Aviano 7 th Grade
Hunger Games.

A word from your ASACS Counselor
As an active member of the Integrated Delivery System (IDS), I am sending out information about
an upcoming event, the Caring For People Forum (see attachment). The IDS is in the process
of organizing this forum and seeking interested individuals who would like to participate. The IDS
will be facilitating teams to identify concerns with or gaps in policy and/or community support issues
within our Base.
The inception of this forum in 2009 has evolved as a preferred means for AF leaders to receive community
feedback for review, action, and resolution and has been successful not only in achieving the
initial goal of strengthening support services, but also in relaying messages of service gaps directly
to senior leadership. The Caring For People Forum recognizes the importance of quality of life issues
in developing mission-ready Airmen and supportive family members.
If you are looking for a platform to share your thoughts on ways to make Aviano a better place to
live and work now is your opportunity.
To register to be a Forum participant, please contact Keith Baronsky, LCSW at 632-5667
or keith.baronsky@aviano.af.mil.
See the attached fliers!
Library Dogs at your Aviano Library!
The Library Dogs will be at the base Library this Saturday – 5 & 19 May – from 10-12am…
children of all ages are welcome to come read some good books to some good dogs.
