<strong>Future</strong> <strong>Educators</strong> <strong>Association</strong><br />

Congratulations to the following students who were recently elected as officers of FEA:<br />

What is FEA?<br />

The <strong>Future</strong> <strong>Educators</strong> <strong>Association</strong>, sponsored by Phi Delta Kappa International, is an international network of nearly<br />

1,000 chapters located around the world. As the only pre-collegiate program for prospective teachers, FEA’s mission is<br />

to provide students with opportunities to explore careers in education. Through participation in FEA, students will gain<br />

a realistic understanding of the education profession and the role of the teacher.<br />

FEA is open to all students in grades 9 – 12. Meetings are held approximately twice a month during Super Seminar or<br />

at lunch. In addition to bi-monthly meetings, activities include: Teacher Appreciation, Shadow Days, fundraising to<br />

support teacher appreciation and the annual FEA-Europe Conference, guest speakers from various fields in education,<br />

service project(s), information about scholarships, and tutoring. Interested students should see Ms. Izzo in S40 or one<br />

of the FEA officers. National dues of $8 must be paid by the end of September.<br />

The Importance of Learning a Foreign Language<br />

According to Frank Smith, an internationally renowned psycholinguist, “One language<br />

sets you in a corridor for life. Two languages open every door along the way.” Knowing<br />

a foreign language is necessary in today’s global society. Spanish is the fourth most<br />

commonly spoken language in the world, and many colleges in the United States<br />

recommend at least three years of foreign language courses. In most careers, knowing<br />

a foreign language gives a person an advantage because they can communicate with<br />

other foreign speakers. Learning a foreign language expands your view on different<br />

cultures and allows easier communication. Confidence and self-esteem also improve<br />

with increased experiences in foreign languages. There is no doubt that being bilingual<br />

has many benefits.<br />

AMHS Community Service<br />

During Ms Hoffman’s seminar, Madison<br />

Summey and Aylin Blackwell have been<br />

given the opportunity to work with 2nd<br />

grade students from Ms Colon’s and Ms<br />

Geylani’s class. In Ms Geylani’s class<br />

Madison helps students with their work.<br />

She helps them with their math work,<br />

addition and subtraction and how to count<br />

money. Madison also helps with the<br />

organization of the classroom by putting<br />

student work in their folders. In Ms Colon’s<br />

class Aylin helps the students count and<br />

add. She also helps them with their<br />

classwork. Aylin also enjoys correcting<br />

student papers and filing for Ms Colon. Both<br />

Madison and Aylin think that the students<br />

cooperate really well, even though a few<br />

were shy at first they soon warmed up.<br />

These 8th graders are enjoying the teaching<br />

style of an elementary classroom setting.<br />

They feel it is a fun experience and want to<br />

continue serving their community in this<br />

way.<br />

On September 26, a group of middle school<br />

kids went on a hike to The Chrome Dome. It<br />

was really fun! We exercised and found a<br />

dead snake.

Robotics Club<br />

<strong>Aviano</strong> MHS has a very active robotics club that has participated in the FIRST FTC robotics<br />

competition for the past three years.<br />

The goal of our club follows the philosophy of the FIRST organization:“The FIRST Tech<br />

Challenge is more than a high school robotics program. It is a community focused on building<br />

a better world for tomorrow by engaging high school students in Science, Technology,<br />

Engineering and Math (STEM). FTC is about teaching students the value of hard work,<br />

innovation and creativity. It goes beyond competition by teaching teenagers the importance<br />

of working together, sharing ideas and treating each other with respect and dignity.”<br />

This year we have 18 club members and with a grant from FIRST we are going to be able to<br />

enter two teams in the FTC Germany Regional to be held in Munich on March 1, 2014.<br />

Last year we qualified for the World Championships held in St. Louis in late April. It was an<br />

outstanding experience for our students as they competed against 128 teams from 19<br />

countries.<br />

In Honor of 9/11<br />

On September 11, 2013 at 09:11, the students of<br />

<strong>Aviano</strong> Middle/<strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong> and the <strong>Aviano</strong><br />

Elementary school attended a special joint 9/11<br />

ceremony to honor and remember the victims of<br />

the attack. The event took place in the courtyard<br />

of the high school. The ceremony began with the<br />

sounding of Revile and the raising of the colors of<br />

the United States as well as the Italian flag. Deputy<br />

Chaplain Palomaria addressed the gathering as he<br />

stressed the importance of acknowledging our<br />

heroes and those who lost their lives during the<br />

tragedy of September 11th. The ceremony ended<br />

with the playing of TAPS and laying of a memorial<br />

wreath by the IT-951 Corps Commander and two<br />

representatives from the 4th grade.<br />

Tennis Team Feature<br />

This year the tennis team plays Mary Mount International, Vicenza,<br />

Florence, AOSR, and Naples.<br />

When we played MMI, Jade Westlake won her singles match, Taryn<br />

Williames won her singles match and Savannah Bartlow and Maggie<br />

Lewandowski won their doubles match. We hope to do well in our<br />

remaining matches.
