Future Educators Association
Congratulations to the following students who were recently elected as officers of FEA:
What is FEA?
The Future Educators Association, sponsored by Phi Delta Kappa International, is an international network of nearly
1,000 chapters located around the world. As the only pre-collegiate program for prospective teachers, FEA’s mission is
to provide students with opportunities to explore careers in education. Through participation in FEA, students will gain
a realistic understanding of the education profession and the role of the teacher.
FEA is open to all students in grades 9 – 12. Meetings are held approximately twice a month during Super Seminar or
at lunch. In addition to bi-monthly meetings, activities include: Teacher Appreciation, Shadow Days, fundraising to
support teacher appreciation and the annual FEA-Europe Conference, guest speakers from various fields in education,
service project(s), information about scholarships, and tutoring. Interested students should see Ms. Izzo in S40 or one
of the FEA officers. National dues of $8 must be paid by the end of September.
The Importance of Learning a Foreign Language
According to Frank Smith, an internationally renowned psycholinguist, “One language
sets you in a corridor for life. Two languages open every door along the way.” Knowing
a foreign language is necessary in today’s global society. Spanish is the fourth most
commonly spoken language in the world, and many colleges in the United States
recommend at least three years of foreign language courses. In most careers, knowing
a foreign language gives a person an advantage because they can communicate with
other foreign speakers. Learning a foreign language expands your view on different
cultures and allows easier communication. Confidence and self-esteem also improve
with increased experiences in foreign languages. There is no doubt that being bilingual
has many benefits.
AMHS Community Service
During Ms Hoffman’s seminar, Madison
Summey and Aylin Blackwell have been
given the opportunity to work with 2nd
grade students from Ms Colon’s and Ms
Geylani’s class. In Ms Geylani’s class
Madison helps students with their work.
She helps them with their math work,
addition and subtraction and how to count
money. Madison also helps with the
organization of the classroom by putting
student work in their folders. In Ms Colon’s
class Aylin helps the students count and
add. She also helps them with their
classwork. Aylin also enjoys correcting
student papers and filing for Ms Colon. Both
Madison and Aylin think that the students
cooperate really well, even though a few
were shy at first they soon warmed up.
These 8th graders are enjoying the teaching
style of an elementary classroom setting.
They feel it is a fun experience and want to
continue serving their community in this
way.
On September 26, a group of middle school
kids went on a hike to The Chrome Dome. It
was really fun! We exercised and found a
dead snake.

Robotics Club
Aviano MHS has a very active robotics club that has participated in the FIRST FTC robotics
competition for the past three years.
The goal of our club follows the philosophy of the FIRST organization:“The FIRST Tech
Challenge is more than a high school robotics program. It is a community focused on building
a better world for tomorrow by engaging high school students in Science, Technology,
Engineering and Math (STEM). FTC is about teaching students the value of hard work,
innovation and creativity. It goes beyond competition by teaching teenagers the importance
of working together, sharing ideas and treating each other with respect and dignity.”
This year we have 18 club members and with a grant from FIRST we are going to be able to
enter two teams in the FTC Germany Regional to be held in Munich on March 1, 2014.
Last year we qualified for the World Championships held in St. Louis in late April. It was an
outstanding experience for our students as they competed against 128 teams from 19
countries.
To learn about this year’s challenge you can go to the following link:
http://www.usfirst.org/roboticsprograms/ftc
If you have an interest in working with the robotics club
please contact us. We currently have four community
volunteers that are mentoring our club.
Workday
In Honor of 9/11
On September 11, 2013 at 09:11, the students of
Aviano Middle/High School and the Aviano
Elementary school attended a special joint 9/11
ceremony to honor and remember the victims of
the attack. The event took place in the courtyard
of the high school. The ceremony began with the
sounding of Revile and the raising of the colors of
the United States as well as the Italian flag. Deputy
Chaplain Palomaria addressed the gathering as he
stressed the importance of acknowledging our
heroes and those who lost their lives during the
tragedy of September 11th. The ceremony ended
with the playing of TAPS and laying of a memorial
wreath by the IT-951 Corps Commander and two
representatives from the 4th grade.
