MESSAGE FROM DEON VILJOEN
Southern Sun Lifestyle Resorts
moves into second gear
Message from Deon Viljoen,
Director of Operations, Southern
Sun Lifestyle Resorts
Every New Year is an enormous sunrise. Every
New Year launches an adventure and opens
fresh, brave horizons. But this New Year comes
with even greater promise. The long-awaited,
much-anticipated 2010 is at last on us – and
what an exciting year it’s going to be. 2010 will
be a boom period for tourism, a historic moment
for South Africa, and, I certainly believe, a year
that is going to bring wonderful benefits to our
Southern Sun timeshare owners.
So, as your managing agent, it’s my pleasure
to greet you with those very simple words that
always resonate so deeply: Happy New Year –
and welcome.
Welcome to the annual SunSwop resort
directory. I would like to remind you that
SunSwop was created for all our Southern Sun
timeshare owners to ensure that Southern
Sun timeshare owners easily get access back
into Southern Sun Lifestyle Resorts, easily.
The SunSwop exchange stock is reserved for
Southern Sun timeshare owners only. This
explains why 91% of SunSwop exchanges
in 2009 could be made back into Southern
Sun Lifestyle Resorts. Remember this when
next you plan to deposit your week with any
exchange organisation.
Sunswop is your vacation-exchange
provider. It’s your first-rate and first-port-ofcall
service for safekeeping your timeshare for
later use, or exchanging it into a spectacular
choice of resorts in South Africa or around the
globe. Here you’ll find a trove of information
about the superb timeshare that’s available
to you specifically in southern Africa. Keep
the directory in a handy place, consult it in
all your holiday planning, and, above all, let
your imagination fly as you craft the perfect
vacation for yourself and loved ones.
2010 is important for another reason. Our
revitalised SunSwop facility turns one this
year – and since we’re moving out of our first
year, we’re going, now, into second gear. We’re
stronger, we’re smarter, we’re in the business
of self-improvement, and we’re on track
with our mission to re-energise timeshare in
South Africa. Even the global recession, with
all its hardship, underlined one key message:
Timeshare is a hardy product that withstands
recessionary times very well, and many are
the Southern Sun Lifestyle Resorts members
who have enjoyed excellent holidays despite
the economy.
If we look to 2010, with turn-around in the
air, the value of timeshare is going to come
even more strongly to the fore.
What’s more, we are looking forward
to growth in another service we launched
in 2009, an outstanding package of member
benefits called SunSwop Choices, which
transforms your timeshare ownership into a
broader resort, hotel, concierge and lifestyle
experience. SunSwop members who upgrade
to SunSwop Choices can enjoy a variety of
benefits, chief of them being our prestigious
hotel-exchange programme. Timeshare owners
can deposit their weeks and exchange into
hotels in the Southern Sun group, a facility
that instantly gives you 59 additional choices
of top-class destination – and all without the
waiting period that’s often a normal part of
timeshare exchanges. Sunswop Choices has
been a great success and warmly received by
our members. We’re delighted to be able to
make this offering, and expect it to continue
growing in stature.
In my capacity as chairperson of VOASA
(Vacation Ownership Association of South
Africa), let me add that 2010 will bring other
good news too, given that the introduction
of the Consumer Protection Bill promises to
help bring rogue timeshare operators under
reign. In that spirit, I’d like to caution you to
be circumspect if certain organisations should
approach you and invite you to sell or cede
your Southern Sun timeshare to them. If you
have any concerns, please do contact VOASA
at voasa@voasa.co.za or call 021-914 9693
for expert advice.
2010 is set to be a benchmark year, and in
many different ways.
It’s a new year, a new adventure, and we’re
here to help you make it happen.
Above all, let
your imagination
fly as you craft the
perfect vacation
for yourself and
loved ones.
your unit and the season in which you own.
How do I go about requesting a
domestic exchange?
Once you have deposited your week with
SunSwop, we recommend that you select a
minimum of 3 resort destinations as well as
3 different dates to increase the likelihood of
securing your accommodation request. You
should request your exchange holiday as far in
advance as possible to ensure that we are able
to secure the accommodation being sought.
Can I request multiple exchanges
in the same year?
Yes, as long as you have sufficient SunSwop
Trading Points deposited.
Can I request multiple units in the
same resort?
Yes, as long as you have sufficient SunSwop
Trading Points deposited
Can I reserve consecutive weeks at the
same resort?
Yes, as long as you have sufficient SunSwop
Trading Points deposited.
Can I do midweek and weekend exchanges?
accommodation. The SunSwop Trading Value
Guide in this directory will highlight whether
friend or family member?
Yes, you can. Simply request a Guest Certificate
from SunSwop (R50 per Guest Certificate)
in the name of the relevant person. It is important
that the arriving guest matches the name
on the resorts’ reservation system. The resort
event that the name on the confirmation letter
or guest certificate does not match the name
on the reservation system.
upon confirmation of your reservation.
How do I go about requesting an international
exchange?
We recommend that you select a minimum
dates to increase the likelihood of securing
your accommodation request. You should also
request your exchange holiday as far in advance
as possible to ensure that we are able to secure
the accommodation being sought.
requesting my international exchange?
You don’t need to. In this instance, you will
only be required to deposit your week once
our international exchange request has been
fulfilled.
When do I pay the exchange fee for my
international exchange?
You would be required to pay the exchange
fee for international exchanges at the time
that you request your accommodation. This
is different to local exchanges. In the event
that your requested international exchange is
not fulfilled, then you will be refunded the full
value paid upon registering your request.
What happens if I have to cancel my
confirmed exchange?
You will unfortunately forfeit the exchange
fee paid, and will be required to pay another
You will, however, depending on when you
cancel the confirmed exchange, be entitled to
receive a refund of the SunSwop trading points
used for the exchange. The number of points
refunded would be determined as follows:
• Cancelled up to 60 days prior to
check-in date – 100%
TRADING POINTS GUIDE
To use your trading points you need to know the value of the week
that you own. To find this, you would need to go to the relevant page
in this directory which reflects the calendar and points value for the
geographical region in which your resort is located. It is important that
you know the week number and the size of the unit which you own.
If, for example, you own a week at Umhlanga Sands, you would refer
to the page which shows the values for the KZN North Coast region.
Now refer to the calendar which shows the week numbers to determine
the colour of the week owned for the particular year in which you wish
to deposit your week, e.g. week 30 = Red for 2009.
Take a look at the points table which shows your resort and look
specifically for the full week value of a red week in the unit size which
you own, e.g. if you own a 2 bedroom unit, the value of the week
would be 5875 points.
2/06 11875 9312 8500 6750 5875 2940 2935 4750 2375 2375
To determine the value of the week into which you wish to exchange, you would use the same method, e.g.:
• select the region in which the resort is situated
• select the resort into which you wish to exchange
• check the colour of the week into which you wish to exchange by using the regional calendar
• select the unit size required
E.g. if you wished to exchange into a 0/02 unit in week 20 (white week) at Umhlanga Sands, the value required for this exchange
would be 3250 points.
Please Note: The calendars and trading points provided throughout this directory were correct at the time of printing and subject to change
without notice.
** Please note that some units cannot accommodate six adults. The unit might have sleeper couches that can only fit children 12 years
and younger. Kindly confirm this with your call centre agent.
The trading points received for depositing your week with SunSwop are valid for the current year, plus another year.
