Domestic Circuit Protection BS7671 Amendment 3 

Regulation 421.1.201 – What is it and when does it 

come into force? 

> From January 2015 Amendment No. 3 to BS7671 IET Wiring Regulations prescribes 

that within domestic (household) premises, consumer units and similar switchgear 

assemblies shall have their enclosures manufactured from non-combustible material, 

or be enclosed in a cabinet or enclosure constructed of non-combustible material and 

comply with product standard BS EN 61439-3. 

> Although regulation 421.1.201 will appear in BS7671 from January 2015, it is 

expected that the implementation date for this regulation with be 1st January 

2016, however this does not preclude compliance particularly in terms of design and 

specification prior to this date. 

What is the intention behind this change to BS7671? 

> As far as it is reasonably practical, to contain any fire within the 

enclosure and minimise flames from escaping, caused mainly as a 

result of poorly installed connections. 

What is a non-combustible enclosure? 

> At the time of this publication it is expected that regulation 421.1.201 will advise 

that an example of a non combustible materials is a ferrous metal e.g. steel. Therefore 

a non combustible enclosure includes base, cover, door and any components e.g. 

hinges necessary to contain the fire. Blanks and devices are contained within the non 

combustible enclosure.

Research worldwide shows that the intensity of current flowing 

through the body determines the extent and severity of an 

electric shock.

Injuries become serious when currents exceed 40 to 

50 mA during one second.

Theoretically, a 150 mA current flows through the 

body when a person touches a 230 V energised 

conductor under dry conditions. 

By measuring the intensity difference between live and neutral conductors, 

RCDs actually detect the current flowing through the human body.

The Resi9 range of consumer units provides arguably the highest levels of residential 

circuit protection safety. With a wide range of switch disconnectors, RCDs and MCBs, 

complimented by a single pole RCBO. 

Providing speed of installation with safety in mind. 

All outgoing devices can be connected in seconds and with no incoming terminal to 

tighten, the correct mechanical connection force is guaranteed every time. For unused 

ways, Resi9’s unique fully encapsulated busbar system means that the highest levels of 

installer and end user protection are always guaranteed. 

Even with the front cover of the enclosure removed, the main busbar is protected to IP2X, 

meaning it remains finger safe but allows access with test probes by the installer. For 

energy management and safety, Resi9 can also accept a wide range of control devices.
