(This book is available at NIN Library)
Aging is a natural and irreversible
phenomenon. But should we
necessarily grow old as we age? No, it
does not have to mean a quick end to
good health conveys Chandra
through this book. He challenges
prevailing negative attitude and offers
more positive view of the process of
aging.
The book focuses on three main themes. Firstly, it
is a guide to the variety of behaviour encountered in
the years between sixty and eighty. The second theme
of this book presents a guide for coping with the
challenges of old age. The book explores ways of
bridging the generation gap and maintaining good
family relationships. It deals with the anticipation of
death, with bereavement and its aftermath. It also
deals with health- physical, mental and spiritual.
The third and most important theme of this book
is to emphasize hope and self-help. It is essential that
elders keep their minds and bodies alert and fit, for
no society will be able to bear the burden of an aging
population that is also feeble and sickly. It will not
help simply to indulge in self-pity and to make
complaint against the government, society and new
generation. How much better it will be to begin some
self-help, to be optimistic and to confront new
challenges till the last day of life! Chandra says, “Do
not tell others to cheer up, tell yourself.”
Although aging is a natural process, most of us age
prematurely and suffer from degenerative diseases
because of our un-natural lifestyle. The effect of aging
can be divided into two parts, i.e., Physical and Mental.
With advancing age, skin start losing elasticity, hair
turn grey, eyesight may start deteriorating and so on.
But author asks the readers to accept these physical
changes willingly. He has devoted many chapters on
ways to cope up with these changes and other
diseases with the help of improved
diet, yogic exercises, and some
lifestyle changes.
Like physical changes, there are
mental changes that take place with
the passage of years. Memory
specially remembering names may be
affected, capacity to concentrate may
reduce. But there is no life-altering
general mental decline as we grow
older. In contrast, knowledge shows
no change with aging, rather some
skills like problem solving may
improve with healthy aging. Author
suggests to keep oneself mentally
occupied in order to prevent from falling into disease
and senility. The brain also requires stimulation in the
form of outside interests, attitudes, plans and ongoing
search for a deeper awareness of life.
Spending time in a voluntary association or group
or starting a new hobby can have a great healing
effect. People who have dreams and visions of
accomplishment are less likely to be depressed than
those who do not have goals. Goals sustain a man’s
sense of well being and purpose. Having goals makes
you whole, i.e., spiritually, physically and emotionally.
question & answer
Naturopath's Advice
u Dr. D. Sathyanath
Nature Cure Physician
I am a 56 years old person and suffering from Chronic
Rhinitis since last 5 years, Irritable Bowel syndrome
since last 4 years, Hyperacidity since 1979 and Eczema
in legs since last 5 years. I have been suffering
from Low blood pressure for last 10 years. Kindly
suggest the possible treatment options with Naturopathy
and Yoga, to get a permanent relief.
S. K. Paul, Lukhnow
The complaints you’re suffering from had turned to
be chronic as the therapy so far you have had might
be for very symptomatic relief. Naturopathy
perceives the body as one single entity rather than
different systems. According to Naturopathy
diagnosis, it is the eliminatory channels that were
not functioning to the optimum level, thereby
leading to all your sufferings. Out of four eliminatory
channels, viz., Intestines, Kidneys, Lungs and Skin,
as per your complaints three of them have a
problem in performing their task. So the treatment
will be targeted at the eliminatory channels first, by
supporting them simultaneously preventing all the
possible triggers which may provoke the symptoms.
First, let me say, as you are crossing a chain of
problems since many years, it is highly appreciable
if you get admitted in any of the Nature Cure
hospitals as per your convenience. According to
Naturopathy, all the complaints are same. It
performs by selecting different parts of the body
when others are blocked.
You may need to undergo a course of fasting
from three to fifteen days as per your body
composition, which shall be prescribed after
assessing your physique by a Naturopath. It is
advisable to have Enema during the fasting to assist
the bowel movement. During the course of fasting,
Mud application to the eczematous parts, Sun bath
and steam baths are recommended as per your
endurance. Plantain leaf bath or full wet sheet pack
can also be had to promote the elimination via skin.
Both those therapies promote the skin functions.
Necessary care should be taken to consume enough
water before undergoing those therapies.
Avoid indulging in any Animal products including
milk and milk products. Peanuts, Chana daal and Soya
products shall also be avoided during the course of
treatment. In general, less salt and non-spicy diet is
advised. Adequate fluid intake shall be ensured. Juice
of melons, grapes, figs and alkaline vegetables like
Pumpkin, Cucumber, Lettuce, Radish etc. shall be given
preference. The diet should be rich with vegetables and
fruits. Complete raw food for a certain period is also
advisable.
Raw juice therapy will be very effective in your case
as you suffer from different problems and this will help
in purifying the blood and solving the hyperacidity
problem. Alkaline juice of Lauki, Cucumber, Snake
gourd, Plantain pith or Durva (grass) diluted with water
can be taken, empty stomach.
As of therapies are concerned, Cold hip baths for
10 to 15 mins. everyday will be beneficial, Facial steam
and Hot chest packs can be had to relieve congestion
and ease the breathe.
Yogic kriyas like Kapalbathi and Neti kriyas are the best
methods to clean the nasal tract and the surrounding
sinuses. They shall be done regularly to keep airflow
uninterrupted.
As a precaution, the skin should not be left dry.
Coconut oil can be applied as a moisturizer. Neemturmeric
paste shall be applied before bath for few days
till the itch is alleviated.
Any form of physical activity is a must; preferably
yoga. The entire body demands on the digestive system
for its energy and nutrient supply. Thus with regular
physical activity there appears keen hunger and
complete bowel evacuation, which indicates that the
digestive system is back to its normal status.
from the desk of publication officer
Welcome 2012
When this magazine
will reach to you, you must
have welcomed the New
Year 2012 and decided to
make it a great year for you.
From the core of your heart,
from the view of your
passion, from the sight of
your future. Everybody does
it; everybody wants to
welcome a chance to live a
wonderful life. What is most important here is to
retain the desire throughout the year. So that, when
we start the next year, you are full of satisfaction and
enthusiasm to take up another resolution in your
mind.
Things are relative, truly relative. There is someone
whose desires may end, where start yours. We need
to make our thinking relative to this ‘relativity’ and
we reach to ‘Absoluteness’. Inculcating the wideness
in our thinking enables us to see the things in a
relative manner. We need to view the universe with
this vision, before we start regretting, and we shall be
amazed to know our SELF.
There are various aspects to discuss on this
‘relativity’ but the most important is Peace of Mind.
The key to it is to recognize the source of it for you.
Anything what does not leave you in peace after
earning money or doing work or pleasing others is
never your source of peace. Your source of peace is
what makes you feel worthy and complete even after
a loss of materialistic and worldly object. Your source
of peace is what makes you feel Absolute from the
core of your heart without any shrink in your thoughts.
The question may be, how can we feel that always,
as the world is relative? Here is the answer and
relativity comes in role
again, your peace never lies
only in superficial
happiness, but either in
other’s happiness ‘or’ in your
own happiness without
hurting feelings of anyone
else. Recognizing the points
where we achieve this, is
finding the real source of
peace for an individual.
Everything else is secondary to it and an ongoing
process of life as a continuous set of happenings.
All of us must have taken some resolutions to start
the New Year to achieve something and have initiated
working on that. The point to be taken care is that,
the efforts are fruitful to our aim, only if they are taken
in right direction. Sincere efforts and devotion to the
goal takes us to the point of satisfaction and grants
the peace of mind. As a part of the complete circle, it
creates enthusiasm again in our acts leading to
successful execution of duty and to reach our goal.
Let us try to identify the eternal peace of mind to
be more and more efficient and happy. Let us try to
make the painting of life colorful, calm and with the
impression of dreams on it. Let us try to maintain the
desire, we have started with, throughout the year, as
if every day is the first day of the year and sunrise
occurs with a new resolution to be followed
throughout the day.
Wish you all a very Happy, Prosperous and
Energetic New Year ahead.
Malnutrition
Dr. P. Yuvaraj Paul
In most cases of Kwashiorkor, the cause is
intake of poor quality protein rather than
inadequate quantity, over a prolonged period
of time. More recently, malnutrition is defined
as an unintentional weight loss of more than
10 percent of body weight associated with a
serum albumin level below 3.2 g/dl.
Some characteristics of people suffering
from malnutrition are dull lifeless hair, greasy
pimpled facial skin, dull eyes, slumped posture.
Fatigue and depression are easily evident by
the spiritless expressions and behaviour.
Types of Protein Energy Malnutrition
l
l
Kwashiorkor (Protein malnutrition).
Marasmus (Deficiency in both calorie and
protein nutrition).
Marasmus is caused by a severe deficiency of nearly
all nutrients, especially protein and carbohydrates.
Most of the times, Marasmus occurs before the age of
one year, whereas Kwashiorkor occurs after 18
months. Marasmus can be differentiated from
Kwashiorkor by the presence of edema.
Marasmus leads to extensive tissue and muscle
wasting with edema. Other common characteristics
include dry skin, loose skin folds hanging over the
buttocks and armpit. There is also severe loss
of adipose tissue from the normal fat depositing
area like thighs. Severely affected children are
often nervous, irritated and hungry.
10 Guidelines for Good Health
1. Maintain regularity in routine
People who suffer from constipation or sleeplessness
are those who do not listen to their biological clock.
2. Eat fresh natural food
Most natural foods are more effective than their
preserved counterparts. Cooking is a method of processing
which destroys micro organisms, softens foods making them
easier to chew and digest.
Soft drink concentrates should not replace your glass
of fruit juice. Consumption of all types of natural foods
have been laid down by Naturopaths.
3. Adapt yourself to seasonal variations
Changes in seasons have a tremendous impact on our
body and this affects our health. If the diet is modified
according to the climatic conditions, our body suffers
minimum shock and adapts very easily to seasonal variations.
E.g. The intake of fats and carbohydrates is increased
during winter; it helps in providing the required additional
generation of heat by the body.
4. Eat well but do not overeat
Eat three to four meals a day, but do not overeat. We
have very well described in our early issues regarding;
l When to eat?
Eat only when you are hungry.
l
l
What to eat?
Natural organic and healthy balanced diet.
How to eat?
Chew well, concentrate and enjoy your food.
5. Avoid excessive salt and spices
Anything that is done in moderation will not harm the
body, but a slight excess every day can be harmful for the
body in the long run.
One can learn to enjoy the flavour of foods without salt,
by discrete use of lime juice, black pepper powder, coriander,
etc. Spicy foods must be avoided since they are harmful to
the delicate lining of the gastro – intestinal tract.
6. Avoid too many sweets, especially sugar
Sucrose has been proved to be one of the causative
agents of dental caries. Fresh fruits should be preferred
over canned fruits. Consumption of concentrated sugar
sources like jams and jellies must be minimized.
7. Avoid much cholesterol and saturated fats
Vegetable oils may be used. Controlled consumption of
sweet prepared in pure ghee, butter and vanaspati is
necessary. It is essential to restrict the consumption of fried
foods and high- sugar foods.
8. Carbohydrates especially Starch and Fibre
are important
Consumption of complex carbohydrates, such as
starches present in cereals, is more advisable than that of
the simpler sugars found in honey, table sugar and milk.
This is because the digestion of the complex sugars is
relatively slower than that of the simpler ones.
Fibre in the diet lowers blood cholesterol. Avoidance of
fibre or consumption of a fibre free diet is proved to be
definite cause of rectal disorders, poor bowel habits, chronic
constipation and colon cancer.
9. Watch your weight
It is always better to be slightly underweight than to be
overweight. Every gram of excess weight is a burden on the
heart and vital body resources. If loss of weight is advised then
it should be done at the rate of one kg. a week until your ideal
weight is reached. Weight loss should never be drastic as it
may lead to major health problems. The process of losing
weight depends on good eating habits, i.e., eating slowly,
chewing the morsel thoroughly by preparing smaller portions.
10. Have variety in food
Better the nutritional value, lesser is the chance of
nutritional deficiency. The following major food groups may
be used as a guide for selecting at least one food from each
group.
l Milk, dal.
l Fresh Fruits and Vegetables.
l Cereals and Cereal products.
l Oils, Fats, Brown sugar and Jaggery.
Sleep may be affected and
constipation is a common problem.
It may also cripple a person
throughout the life.
A disease which results from
lack of certain nutrient, is known
as a deficiency disease. Iron
deficiency 'Anaemia' is very common
in women and young girls. Increased
menstrual loss and unfulfillment of
increased need of iron during
pregnancy are some of the major
causes of anaemia.
Pregnant woman are especially prone
to malnutrition, specially when they are
adolescent and not matured enough to bear
children.
The period of infancy, i.e., from birth to 18
months, is a very crucial period and thus protein
quality & quantity in the diet should be taken care
of. During the process of weaning, most of the poor
children are prey to faulty nourishment since they
may be fed 'Sago kanji' (malt) as a substitute of milk.
But, no food other than mother's milk provides good
quality protein. Lack of protein in the diet may
result in severe wastage of body tissues and this
may lead to multiple deficiencies.
Infants and pre- school children are dependent
on their mother for nourishment. If her selection of
food for them is incorrect, they may suffer from
malnutrition. Snacks such as potato wafers,
popcorn, cakes, carbonated soft drinks, candies etc.
not only supply very limited nutrients but also
cause a feeling of fullness. Such hollow or empty
calorie foods should not be allowed liberally. Crash
dieting is also becoming very popular in today’s
modern culture. The resulting malnutrition due to
this crash dieting is evident in an adolescent either
in the form of anaemia or lack of stamina affecting
their day to day activities.
The women’s appetite during pregnancy
increases along with the need of the nutrients as
spinal streching exercises
Yoga for
Spine
3 Minutes Relaxation Technique
Dr. S. M. Acharya
Frequent attacks of common backaches are the
single biggest cause of absenteeism from productive
work all over the world. It is estimated that 4 out of 5
persons in the world, more so, sedentary workers and
executives at all levels suffer from those nagging
backaches resulting in loss of millions of man hours
and billions of dollars worth of production
worldwide annually.
With the onset of computerisation, internet, etc.
more and more persons are spending long hours
sitting in front of their machines and screens, straining
theirs back against the rule of nature, causing damage
to their spinal columns creating nervous troubles,
aches and pains of varied nature.
If timely precautions and curative measures are
not taken, the occasional troubles slowly complicates
into lumbago, cervical spondylosis, sciatica, slip-disc,
etc. and the person may require highly invasive spinal
surgery. Such troubles, if neglected, may turn into
irreparable degeneration of the ligaments and even
cancer of the spine.
Prevention is better than cure and cheaper too. All
animals and birds follow their natural way of eating,
drinking, sleeping, walking and even indulging in
sex. Man is the only animal, a two-legged one , of
course, who goes on breaking all rules of nature and
natural behaviour. If men could follow nature and all
natural rules, he could certainly avoid various
problems, including backaches.
Looking at the animals and birds instinctive
movements of limbs and habits of eating natural food
best suited to them. I suggest simple yogic exercises
that stretches the spine helps it to attain its natural
curvature. It has worked wonders and helped cure
one fully within a couple of weeks of practice. Briefly,
the technique is a three or four minute toning up
regimen.
Step 1. After waking up in the morning or even
after an afternoon nap, lie straight on your back on a
relatively hard bed with your palm placed in place of
the pillow under your head facing upwards. Thus, the
hands fix the spine. Then try to induce natural
stretching as if we are taking what is called in Hindi
an ‘angdai’ (instinctive stretching). This is good for
even those suffering from Cervical Spondylosis. Do
not over stretch. Just do it like an innocent child when
lying in the lap of the mother. If you are already
suffering from backache, it may take a few days to
induce this natural stretching.
Step 2. Now, remaining in that relaxed position,
join your big toes, touching each other lightly. Then
quickly pull up the feet towards your head without
moving the heels and wait for a second. Push back
your feet quickly without force keeping the heels
fixed there only. Then relax for a second or two,
enjoying the nice feeling and do it again to repeat it
for 10 times (or more if you are comfortable and have
the time to enjoy longer).
Nisargopachar Varta : January 2012 15

spinal streching exercises
The second step is to repeat the same but instead
of jerking down the feet, move one foot clockwise
and the other anti-clockwise without moving the
heels, in a synchronised manner to complete a full
circle. Relax and enjoy leaving both the feet at their
original place. Repeat this too for a minimum of ten
times or more.
Step 3. The third step is to do the same in the
reverse direction. Take the feet in a reverse manner
without moving the heels but raising the knees. When
the toes come up and touch each other, the knees
also come up. Move the feet downwards as in the
first step mentioned above, the knees falling down
automatically and relax. Enjoy that beautiful
sensation felt in the entire spinal area and the back.
Repeat ten times or more.
Step 4. The fourth step is to take the legs six to ten
inches apart, as apart as you feel comfortable. Then
pull up both feet together, keeping the heels on the
bed. That will make both the knees rise up slightly,
feet working as lever. Bring the knees together,
quickly but without force. Then push back the feet,
effortlessly to their original position. The knees will
automatically fall down where they were initially
placed. Repeat it for 10 times or more enjoying the
relaxation. Perform it playfully as if a child is playing
with his legs.
Step 5. Finally, draw both the feet to the middle of
the bed so that, the knees would also rise up; just like
when we draw our legs towards us when reading a
book lying on the bed. Now pull up the feet, not the
heels. Then quickly bring the knees together without
force. Stay for a second. Then drop down the feet back
to their place with a slight thud. This is highly relaxing
for leg muscles and for the mind to unwind from
tiredness and tension. Repeat ten times or more.
This entire relaxation technique takes 3 to 5
minutes. Thereafter, start taking your feet slowly
downwards towards the end of the bed to make them
straight, thinking only that you are stretching from
head to toe in a straight line to grow taller and taller
without allowing any other thought. When fully
stretched, take a deep breath, keeping your palms
16
Vertebral body
Intervertebral
disk
Spinal cord
under the head all the time. then start inhaling slowly
to the full and then try to induce the same ‘angdai’
effortlessly while exhaling. Then relax for a few
seconds.
For getting up from the bed, turn sideways and
get up. If you have neck pain, then after standing up,
put your palms behind your head, breath in and raise
your heels a bit as if you are standing on the toes just
for a second, take ‘angdai’ and start walking straight.
This way you can keep your posture straight
throughout your life without stoping as many aged
people do. It will keep you free from most aches and
pains of the spine and the joints as long as you live.
Hence, the good health slogan in this new year
can be said as:
“Three minutes a day, keeps the doctor away”.
And, whenever you are too tired, just lie down and
do this 3-minute stretching to come out ‘Fresh like a
flower’ each and every time. Putting this into your
daily routine, you will yourself as a rejuvenated
person.
natural diet
Dr. Sateesh Bajaj
Going into the details of statistics of Diabetes
will be the wastage of time for the reader as well as
for the writer. The rise is so high that even the people
not related to medical profession know the name of
the disease as “SUGAR”. So, it becomes the duty of the
medical professionals to guide the public to manage
it at all levels, personal & mass.
Let us understand the phenomenon of the disease
first, for a better management. Sugar (glucose,
carbohydrates, starch etc.) is the very basic thing that
is required by the body as instant source of energy.
Each & every function being performed by the body
requires this energy-providing group (COOH). The
muscles of heart, lungs, intestines or external visible
physical movements, all need energy. A definite level
of Insulin hormone in the blood makes the cells to
absorb this glucose & this energy in the cells performs
all the functions of different organs of the body. This
COOH group is like fuel which burns to produce heat
(energy) in the body & its carbon molecule (C) is
excreted out by lungs in the form of Carbon dioxide
(CO 2
) which is simple to understand.
The problem arises at two levels, i.e.,
either Beta cells of Pancreas, which
secrete Insulin, start becoming
inefficient & produce less insulin and /
or cells become resistant to Insulin.
Further, there are 2 types of Diabetes :
1. Type 1 Diabetes
Where more than 90 percent of Beta cells of
Pancreas get destroyed (systematic defects, viral
attacks, accidental damage to pancreas) stopping the
production of Insulin & is called Type1 Diabetes
Mellitus – IDDM or T 1 DM. It is controlled only with
administration of daily doses of Insulin injections.
2. Type 2 Diabetes
Efficiency of beta cells of Pancreas starts
deteriorating resulting in decreased secretion of
Insulin. This is type 2 Diabetes Mellitus or Non Insulin
Dependent Diabetes Mellitus, i.e., NIDDM or T2DM.
T2DM is kept under control with daily doses of oral
medicines. Medicines stimulate the pancreas to
secrete more insulin. But, slowly their effect decreases
and dose increases. In 5 to 10 years time, the patient is
bound to take insulin injections.
Symptoms
The symptoms include polyurea (frequent
urination), polydypsia (increased thirst, dryness of
mouth), dehydration, weight loss, delayed wound
healing, lethargy and sudden change of vision.
Causes and Complications
The cause of diabetes may be from Heredity to
Obesity due to modern sedentary lifestyle, where
there is no time for self health care. Chemically treated
junk foods, cold drinks, preserved & processed
eatables are all to be blamed.
Renal failures (Diabetic Nephropathy), Cardio
vascular problems (Hypertension, Heart attacks,
Strokes, Atherosclerosis etc.), Neuropathies
(Numbness of feet, Erectile dysfunction etc.) and
Diabetic Retinopathy are some of the major
complications in this disease.
Naturopathy at a Glance
Naturopathy brings down the Blood Glucose level
significantly in a week time in case
of T2DM though it is very difficult in
case of IDDM. If diagnosed very
early, it may even cure Diabetes in
certain cases. A careful monitoring
of Blood sugar levels is required by
regular testing. If a patient is taking
medicines, even more care is needed
as Blood sugar starts coming down & there arises a
need to taper down the dosage of medicines.
natural diet
There are basically two main groups of medicines,
i.e., Sulphonylureas and Biguanides and they mainly
work in three ways :
1. They stimulate the Pancreas to secrete more
Insulin – Sulphonylureas.
2. They increase the peripheral uptake of glucose
& thus reduce glucose levels in blood – Biguanides.
3. They reduce / hamper the assimilation of glucose
from the intestines by the blood. This action further
reduces the sudden shooting up of Blood glucose levels,
which are very harmful for a diabetic patient.
If we concentrate upon the action of medicines, it is
very clear that all these above mentioned actions could
be performed with the help of Naturopathy & Yoga.
The stimulation of Pancreas is possible with
Naturopathy Methodologies and specific Yog aasans,
as well as the peripheral uptake of glucose can also be
maintained with some other Naturopathy treatments
and brisk walks in the morning and evening.
Controlled assimilation of glucose from intestines is
also possible by simply changing the diet pattern.
Diet
Diet is the most important part to be taken care for
diabetic patients.
For Diabetics, the advice may be "Have a Breakfast
like a King, Lunch like a Prince & Dinner like a Pauper". A
heavy breakfast is recommended for a diabetic
person because increased Blood sugar will be
consumed by his day’s physical activity without
harming the internal organs. Lunch should be slightly
lighter, again for the same reason and the dinner
should be very light because of the reduced physical
activity during sleep. The diet planned in this manner
will keep a check on rising Blood sugar levels.
A very short fast on vegetable juices or vegetable
soups may prove beneficial.
Fiber / Roughage
This is the factor which is very important for Diabetics
as it performs the function equivalent to a function of
Biguanides, the third one as stated above. The fiber in
fruits & vegetables does not get fully digested in the
Alimentary canal. Rather at the first stage its semidigested
form absorbs the digested fluids and takes the
18
shape of a bolus, which keeps on moving towards
rectum with peristaltic movements of the intestines. In
this process, it keeps on releasing the digested fluids
slowly and in a controlled manner. Thus its function is
comparable to the medicines. So a Diabetic should be
advised to have a lot of green leafy vegetables, plenty
of salads & whole grains. Never take pulses without
outer covering, take it as whole. A certain 'No' to fruit
juices as they lack in fiber and are readily absorbed
causing sudden rise in B.Sugar levels. Wherever possible,
fruits & vegetables should be taken with skin & seeds.
However vegetable juices & soups are more preferable
as they have a low content of Carbohydrates.
Carbohydrates & Starch
These are always prohibited in Diabetes. But the
daily requirement is fulfilled as lesser quantities of these
found in other food. So potatoes, rice, sweet potatoes,
beetroot, fine wheat flour etc. should be avoided.
Avoid taking very sweet fruits like banana, sapota,
mangoes, grapes etc. but go for papaya, guava, jambu
fruit, falsa, prunes, cherry, loquat, pomegranate,
peaches, zizyphus, slightly sour oranges, sweet lime
etc. The mantra is that, fruits that are less sweet and / or
sour are a safer & beneficial option.
Medicinal diet
It is recommended to cover the very first action by
medicines, though not fully but it seems to help a lot.
Take at least one vegetable a day that is slightly bitter
in taste. Though it is not scientifically proven, yet it
seems to work for Diabetics. Bitter gourd is a proven
one but list may be extended to capsicum, fenugreek
leaves, drumsticks & its leaves, guar beans, French
beans, cowpea beans, sword beans, celery, colocasia
leaves, curry leaves etc.
Aloe-vera pulp, Green tea, Garlic, Stinging nettle
are proved to be helpful. Cinnamon is supposed to
multiply the efficiency of Insulin. Juice from fresh
green Amla (Indian gooseberry) is the best one. The
quantity may be about 20 to 30 ml.
Infertility refers to the failure to conceive even
after the couple stay together for more than a year
and try to conceive .Women who can get pregnant,
but unable to sustain it, is also termed as Infertility.
Primary and Secondary Infertility
Couples with Primary infertility have never been
able to conceive, while Secondary infertility is
difficulty in conceiving after already having
conceived atleast once (with a full term pregnancy
or a miscarriage).
Prevalence
Fertility problems affect one in twenty couples in
India. In one third of all cases, only male needs
treatment, in one third both male and female need
treatment and in the remaining third only female
needs treatment.
Cause of Infertility
In Females
PCOS, Endometriosis, Uterine fibroid, Thyroid
problems, Autoimmune infections, Blocked fallopian
tubes ,Pelvic adhesions, Premature ovarian failure, High
FSH, Abnormal cervical mucosa etc.
9. DIET
Nutrition plays a key role in achieving pregnancy.
Eating unprocessed, natural, whole, organic food
might assist a couple to overcome infertility. Nuts,
seeds and fresh natural products are rich in
nutrients, while packaged, processed foods contains
a few. Protein helps the body to
produce hormones, transport
oxygen and nutrients, repair cells,
fight infections and grow new
tissue. Unsaturated fats, especially
omega-3 and omega-9 fatty acids
are important nutrients as well.
Drink plenty of water to keep fluid
stores in the body at optimal levels
so that, ovaries and testes receive
enough fluid. Nutritional
supplements might also assist with
overcoming infertility. Some
people need extra zinc for optimal
sperm health in men and to assist
with hormone and egg production
in women. Even though sources of
zinc are mainly from animal origin
(from protein foods), Good
vegetarian sources are Milk and
the blood circulation and aids in muscle relaxation,
especially of the Uterine muscles. Cucumber seeds
are considered to aid in conception. Avocado due
to its high levels of Vit E, boosts fertility and also
improves sperm motility. Garlic, effective in the
treatment of Endometriosis, is a potent anti
inflammatory agent and stimulates the reproductory
organs in both the sexes. A mixture of Cinnamon and
Cardamom (1 tsp) is found to enhance the sexual
energy and is also good in case of PCOD.
By improving the health of the vital organs the
body can revitalize the reproductive organs. Patients
who are using conventional fertility treatments are
encouraged to combine with Naturopathic
treatments for better results.
Cheese, Peanuts, Beans, Whole grain cereals, Potato,
Pumpkin seeds etc. Researchers demonstrate that,
adding extra Folic acid, Vitamins E, B6, B12, Iron,
Magnesium and Selenium increase fertility. Vitamin
E has shown to help hormone production. Wheat
germ and Pumpkin seeds are good sources of
vitamin E. B vitamins helps maintaining healthy
nervous systems and muscles. Vitamin B6 is also
known to help progesterone production. Selenium
helps to minimize free radical damage and works
together with vitamin E to combat infertility. Its
food for thoughts
People consume different food for varied reasons. Youngsters
consume mostly out of compulsion (from parents and other
peers),adults mostly to maintain weight and complexion, fitness
enthusiasts for balancing the proteins, water and fats, and the elderly
mostly as a routine. Of course this is all much generalized and may
differ depending on individual choice. So the question to be asked
is what determines our choice to eat particular food? Why do we
crave for certain foodstuffs more than others? And finally, does mood
determine our food choice or is it the food choice that determines
our mood?
Many factors such as smell, sight and touch influence the desire
to eat. These senses invoke ‘salivation’ – the first sign of hunger. Now
hunger is different from appetite, which is more of a desire to eat
rather than the need. Both, hunger and appetite are controlled by
the hypothalamus in brain which releases hormones that target
receptors in the liver. A lot of emotional states (happiness, sadness,
irritation, anger etc.) affect these hormones (like leptin and ghrelin
among others). This could probably be the reason why the elderly
keep insisting on maintaining a happy frame of mind during meals.
Nisargopachar Varta : January 2012

food for thoughts
Research in the connection between a person’s
mood and the food he or she eats has revealed what
many people have long believed, that eating a
certain food can influence a person’s mood – at least
temporarily! Judith Wurtman, professor at the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT ), USA, has
focused on how certain foods alter one’s mood by
influencing the level of certain brain chemicals
called neurotransmitters. While many other factors
influence the level of these chemicals, such
as hormones, heredity, drugs and alcohol, three
neurotransmitters – dopamine, norepinephrine
and serotonin – have been studied in relation to food,
and this research has shown that neurotransmitters
are produced in the brain from components of certain
foods.
The behavioral response varies from the individual
to individual. Some people binge after a stressful
episode, whereas, for some people, the appetite may
get suppressed. Thus it is clear that emotions play an
important role in determining the food choices and
consequently affecting the lifestyle. Depending on
the events occurring around us, our mental state can
induce secretion of those hormones that are
responsible for inducing hunger. Hence, it becomes
vital to be totally disconnected with the external
world during a meal. Praying (or meditating) before
meals can be an excellent method to help focus on
the meal. Multitasking while having food can also
cause fluctuation in the hormone secretion. Activities
like watching television, speaking over the phone, or
reading, during a meal, all contribute to either a
reduced appetite or result in overeating.
Indian system of medicine has classified food based
on six tastes – sweet (madhur rasa), sour (amla rasa),
astringent (kashaya rasa), salty (lavana rasa), pungent
(katu rasa) and bitter (tikta rasa). The ancient science
goes on to mention the qualities of each of taste.
sweet Satisfaction and soothing
sour
Resentment and envy
astringent Fear and anxiety
salty
Craving and uncontrollable desires
pungent Unsettling and dryness
bitter
Irritation and unsteadiness
Though, these qualities are only indicative and not
diagnostic, there are some important nutrients for
brain development and function, but they can work
properly only if a wide range of other nutrients are
also available in the right amounts and in proportion
to each other. There is no single nutrient that holds
the key to mental health and well being.
The combination of nutrients that is most
commonly associated with good mental health and
well-being is as follows:
l Polyunsaturated fatty acids particularly the
omega 3 types found in some plants – flaxseed oil
(alsi/Javas ka tel), canola oil (safed sarson ka tel – less
common in India), walnut (akhrot) etc.
l Minerals, such as zinc in whole grains,
legumes (phaliyan) and milk, magnesium in green
leafy vegetables, nuts and whole grains and iron in
green leafy vegetables and some fruit.
l Vitamins, such as folate (in green leafy
vegetables and fortified cereals, e.g. sashakt anaaj),
a range of B vitamins (whole grain products, yeast
and dairy products) and antioxidant vitamins such
as C and E (in a wide range of fruits and vegetables).
People having diets that lack one or more of this
combination of polyunsaturated fats, minerals and
vitamins, and/or contain too much saturated fat or
other elements, including sugar and a range of
food and agricultural chemicals, seem to be at
higher risk of developing the conditions like
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD),
range of Depressive conditions, Schizophrenia and
Dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease. It must be
borne in mind that the products available in the
market which provide concentrated forms of
specific compounds (such as Omega 3 fatty acids)
may not be that effective as those consumed from
naturally occurring sources. One of the reasons for
this postulation could be that other supporting
nutrients that might be required for the digestion
and absorption may also be present in the naturally
occurring source, whereas, isolating the compound
may not make this possible.
Foods that make
you feel alert
Food
Apples, nachni, rajma and
broccoli.
Protein-packed foods like
sprouts, nuts, pulses, lowfat
paneer, skim or low-fat
milk, low-fat yoghurt.
How?
These foods contain boron, which is responsible for handeye
co-ordination, attention and short-term memory.
Boron-rich foods also maintain healthy bone and bloodsugar
levels.
When you supply tyrosine (from eating protein), your brain
will be ready to make it into more of the two alertness
neurotransmitters (dopamine and nor epinephrine).
[Do not avoid carbohydrates, as it is your main source of
energy, especially the B group which is the energy-giving
vitamin. Therefore, a combination of complex carbohydrates,
fibre (vegetables and salads) and a bit of protein is best.]
Foods that make
you feel energetic
Foods that make
you smart
Foods that make
you happy
Foods that
refresh you
Brown rice, sweet potato,
nachni, bajra, oats.
Prunes (Manukka)
Carrots, broccoli (Hari
Gobi), sweet potatoes
(Shakarakand), raw
cabbage, unroasted
walnuts (Akhrot).
Bananas
Nuts
Pistachios (Californian)
Dark chocolate
Oranges, apples, and
yoghurt.
Sunflower seeds
These are low-glycemic carbohydrates(High-glycemic
carbohydrates, e.g., sugar, white bread, rice cakes, bagel/bun,
instant rice, rice, pasta should be avoided.)
They prevent mood swings and good for memory. Prevent
constipation since high in fibre, maintain blood pressure levels
being high in potassium and an excellent source of iron.
Rich in antioxidants. Raw or unroasted walnuts are considered
the healthiest nuts, with twice as many antioxidants as other
nuts. Also good for diabetes.
Contain vitamin B6, which is known to build serotonin levels.
They contain no fat, and are available everywhere.
Walnuts (Kashmiri) are high in antioxidants, omega 3 fatty
acids, prevent ageing, and are excellent sources of vitamin E.
Low in glycemic index, high in vitamin B and fibre, low in fat
and maintain blood sugar levels. Almonds are high in
antioxidants and vitamin E.
Releases pleasure-enhancing endorphins into the brain and
also contains phenyl ethylamine, a stimulant associated with
love. Hence, it makes you feel good.
These foods are slow digesting carbohydrates and can supply
a steady source of fuel for the body.
Contain magnesium which helps maintain normal muscle
and nerve function, and keeps heart rhythm steady and
bones strong. It is also involved in energy metabolism and
protein synthesis. Just a handful of sunflower seeds will give
half of daily magnesium needs.
food for thoughts
Lack of sleep causes many side effects, but most frequently
it compromises mood, performance and alertness. It is a bad
cycle. Stress keeps one up at night and releases hormones that
affect mood, decreasing concentration and thereby increasing
stress. There are certain foods that can decrease stress and break
the cycle. Eating foods rich in B vitamins, namely folic acid, B6
and B12, can stabilize mood by helping to create serotonin, a
chemical that directly affects mood in a positive way and is
responsible for relaxation and sleep regulation through its
conversion to melatonin. Antioxidants also play a role by
attacking the free radicals that are released when a person is
stressed. Vitamins C, E and beta-carotene are being heavily
researched for their abilities to boost brain power. All of these
can be found in fruits and vegetables, especially citrus fruits,
carrots, spinach and other dark green, leafy vegetables
(amaranth - chauli, celery- ajmod, cluster beans- gawarphali,
Colocassia leaf- Arabi Patta, coriander- dhania, Lettuce-Salaad
In a nutshell, the principles of Naturopathic Nutrition play
an important role in promoting healthy mind-set – alert, sharp,
intelligent, positive and satvic. The following guidelines of Life
Natural will help in attaining the goal of complete holistic
health:
l A balanced diet: Complete meals with sufficient gap in
between; preferably all fruits and vegetables should be from
organic sources devoid of chemicals and insecticides.
l Hygiene: Personal cleanliness and mental soundness is
a must.
l Physical activity: Yoga or other forms of mild exercise
regularly keeps metabolism normal.
l Rest: Adequate and undisturbed sleep at night (at least
6 to 7 hours for adults) is mandatory. It is often said, “After lunch
rest for a while; after dinner walk a mile”.
l Fasting: Resting the digestive system along with
physical and sensory rest, at least once a week augments health
and longevity. Fasting is generally done by drinking only water
for the entire day.
Psychosomatic Medicine
Yoga
Dr. Pradeep M. K.
Introduction
The current age of progress and science may also
be called as the age of tension, age of anxiety and
depression etc. We are obsessed with our bodies,
generally with the materialistic aspects of life. The
epidemic tension, anxiety, depression, fear in the mind
have a negative effect on our physical health. The
body-mind connection is a powerful and universal
force that exists in our life and often, we are unaware
of it. It is the main driver of our health, whether we
realize it or not.
Fast foods, counter pills, psychotropic medications,
hallucinogenic drugs will not cure our emotional
ailments permanently. This is the time for us to make
more practical use of our moral and spiritual insights
and to pursue “ What is good for our health ? or how
can we get rid of our mental woes ?”
The common causes of any psychosomatic disease
include lack of support in the family, hormonal
changes in the late decades of life, over exhaustion,
memory loss, lack of self respect, poor mental status.
People having Psychosomatic illness complain of
some problems without a natural reason. These are
Ulcers, Head aches, Body aches, Frequent maturation
and defecation, Insomnia, Excessive perspiration,
Vomiting, Loss of appetite, Fatigue, Inability to
perform any work efficiently and Autoimmune
disorders.
The diseases which affects the mankind today have
a strong psychological base. We can see persons now
a days suffering from lots of physical problems like
body aches, tremors, ulcers, digestive problems but
doesn’t have an organic cause or pathology behind
it. These all are due to the altered mental status which
further develop as physical troubles.
When the mental factors such as anxiety or stress
builds up in side a person, it affects his physiological
status leading to psychosomatic illness which
includes gastrointestinal disturbances, respiratory
ailments, cardiovascular problems, genitourinary
disorders, endocrine disorders, migraine,
integumental problems as well as sexual
dysfunction.
Intake of psychotropic drugs does not helps them
in a permanent way until the mental agony is relieved.
Osteoarthritis is a painful problem of the joints. Arthritis
hampers joint movement and disturbs normal life. Healthy joints
help your body move, bend, and twist. But, when you have
arthritis, even simple and everyday’s movement can hurt. Using
stairs can be painful, walking a few steps, opening a door even
combing your hair can be hard.
The nature's effort of expelling foreign matter from our body
are signs of acute disease. Each disease of the attempt of the
body to expel accumulated poison. Disease is a sign which warns
us that our enemy, foreign matter has entrenched itself in our
body and we should be alert about it.
It may happen because of
1. Unnatural way of living/Wrong life style.
2. Foreign matter accumulation
3. Depletion of vital force
4. Hereditary
5. Incorrect treatment
Definition of Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease and
it can occur in one joint or more than one joint. It
causes the cartilage tissue covering the ends of the
bones to wear away.
'Arthritis' is the inflammation of the synovial joints
of the body and is one of the most common of all
disabling disease. It is a crippling degenerative
process which can eventuate in erasable destruction
of the joint.
Osteoarthritis is a chronic degenerative arthritis
commonly seen in middle and old age, especially
afflicting those who are overweight and have avoided
exercises. It frequently develops in a joint which has
suffered injury earlier in life, the injury causing pranic
and structural derangement which was not
completely corrected at that time. It may also be
associated with an excess deposition of calcium in
the body, either due to high dietary intake or due to
imbalance of the parathyroid glands. In the science
of Yoga and Naturopathy arthritis is not consider to
be disease itself, but one symptoms of a widespread
metabolic and pranic malfunction which begins early
in a person’s life.
Prevalence
The prevalence of osteo-arthritis among elderly as
per the Community survey data was 56.6 percent.
The most curious fact regarding Osteoarthritis is
that the number of women affected by this disease
increases greatly after the age of 45. Obesity, history
of joint injuries and trauma, genetic conditions,
hormonal factors, nutritional deficiencies and
indigestion can all cause the suffering of
Osteoarthritis. Low thyroid function has even been
implicated as a possible contributing cause to
osteoarthritis. Since osteoarthritis of the knee is twice
as common in women as men, researchers
investigated the impact ofhigh-heeled shoes on knee
osteoarthritis.
Types of Osteoarthritis
(A) 1. Mono arthritis
Arthritis of any single joint.
2. Poly arthritis
Arthritisof four or more joints
(B) 1. Primary OA
Primary osteoarthritis is related to the
aging process. It focuses of the hand,
knee, and hip joints
2. Secondary OA
Secondary OA occurs in young person.
Symptoms
Pain:Joints may ache, the pain may be burning or
sharp type. For some people, the pain may aggrevate
and subside. Constant pain while you sleep may be a
sign that your arthritis is getting worse.
Redness and Stiffness: In arthritis, getting up in
the morning can be hard. Joints may feel stiff and
creaky for a short time, till you start moving.
Muscle weakness: The muscles around the joint
may get weaker. This happens a lot with arthritis
involving the knee.
Heat and Swelling : Arthritis can cause swelling in
your joints, making them feel tender and sore.
Deformed joints : Joints in wrong shape,
especially as arthritis gets worse.
Reduced range of motion : As your arthritis gets
worse, you may not be able to fully bend, flex or
extend your joints. Or you may not be able to use
them at all.
Nisargopachar Varta : January 2012 29

naturopathy & yoga
Cracking and creaking : Your joints may make
crunching, creaking sounds.
The symptoms of OA can differ from gradual and
subtle inception of severe aching joint pain,
restricted movement, painful bony growths in the
finger joints to joint pain in wrist, knee, foot, elbow,
low back pain and sometimes joint inflammation.
Patient must seek assistance of doctor when there is
continuous pain with no benefit from common pain
relievers. If there is confusion regarding the
diagnosis, he must change the doctor and go for
second opinion.
There are several stages of osteoarthritis:
l Cartilage loses elasticity and is more easily
damaged by injury or use.
l
l
Wear of cartilage causes change to underlying
bone. The bone thickens and cysts may occur
under the cartilage. Bony growths
called spurs or osteophytes develop
near the end of the bone at the affected
joint.
Bits of bone or cartilage float loosely in
the joint space.
l The joint lining, or the synovium,
becomes inflamed due to cartilage
breakdown causing cytokines
(inflammation proteins) and enzymes
that damage cartilage further.
Causes of Osteoarthritis
(A) As per Yogic Science
1. Metabolic and pranic malfunction.
2. Blockage of prana in the joint for a
long time.
(B) As per ModernScience
The cause of osteoarthritis is not known. It is
mostly related to aging. With aging, the water
content of the cartilage increases and the protein
makeup of cartilage degenerates. Eventually,
cartilage begins to degenerate by flaking or forming
tiny crevasses. Osteoarthritis occasionally can
develop in multiple members of the same family,
implying a hereditary (genetic) basis for this
condition.
30
Finger
joints
Thumb
joint
(C) Calcium Crystals
Crystal deposits in the cartilage can cause cartilage
degeneration and osteoarthritis. Uric acid crystals
cause arthritis in gout, while calcium pyrophosphate
crystals cause arthritis in pseudo gout.
And the other factors leading to Osteoarthritis may
be -
1. Overweight
2. Lack of Exercises
3. Excessively rich diet and fatty substance and
overeating.
4. Wrong posture (continuous sitting in chair and
working too long).
5. Mental Factors like tensions, supressions of
emotions, fear, hypersensitivity.
6. Faulty life style
7. Diet
Healthy Joint
Osteoarthritis
Bone
Cartilage
Damage to
bone and
cartilage
Not everyone with a risk factor for a disease will
develop the disease. Risk factors simply increase your
chance of developing the disease in the long-run.
Risk factors we can not change is Hereditary
(Genetic) and the risk factors we can change are
mainly Major injury, Overweight and Muscles
weakness.
Management of Osteoarthitis
The disease can be diagnosed by the clinical signs
and symptoms and investigations such as X-ray, Blood
DC, ESR etc. and following could be the points of
natural management.
6. Patient education and the encouragement of a
7. Avoidance of trauma and undue physical stress
to affected joints.
8. Occupation change, transfer to lighter work,
giving time to strenous hobbies.
9. Modification of existing activities to avoid
prolonged standing or working.
10. Hydrotherapy to relive pain and muscle
spasm.
11. Dietary restrictions.
Modern medicine has not yet fully come to terms,
with the overall dimention of arthritis. It concentrates
on the relief of arthritis pain, but fails to treat and
correct its underlying causes. But, the points in
Alternative treatment of OA can be as given below:
1. Mental attitude : Positive Mental attitide is
very necessary for a patient. Osteoarthritis may be
acute or chronic. These patients suffer severe pain for
a longer period. Hence OA patients require a positive
attitude.
2. Fasting: Fasting is very effective in OA. Fasting
with orange juice for 3-4 days, will be hepful for pain
removing.
3. Hydro therapy : Knee pack for 45 minutes daily
is useful for the swollen condition of the knee. Direct
application of mud is also beneficial for OA of Knees.
Warm water Enema once in a week can be helpful to
remove the impurities from the body.
4. Diet : Scientists have established that the
antioxidants Vitamin C and D are important in
developing normalcartilage, andit may also be able to
reverse some cartilage damage. Researches have
found that osteoarthritis patients who consume more
vitamin c in their diet have a slower progression of the
disease than patients who eat low levels of Vitamin C.
Osteoarthritis progresses more slowly in patients who
have plenty of Vitamin D in their diet. In addition, this
vitamin has been linked to rebuilding cartilage and
preventing the breakdown of cartilage.Simple
Vegetariandiet is recommended for OA.
5. Heat and Massage Therapy : Massage helps
to relieve muscle tension caused by joint pains
associated with osteoarthritis. In addition, massage
therapy boosts circulation of blood to the affected
joint, thus, decreasing joint stiffness and promoting
cartilage repair. The process involves massaging the
muscles surrounding the inflamed joint(s). Muscle
spasms that are as a result of Osteoarthritis can also
be averted through massage light as this will help to
relieve the tensed muscles that supported the
weakened muscles of the joint.
6. Exercise : Obesity is a major causeof OA. So it is
very necessary to reduce weight through the exercise
and diet control. Most health experts agree that
regular exercise can be effective in helping alleviate
arthritis pain. Stretching your muscles as well as
building up muscular strength will lead to not only
bulid up stronger joints but alleviate stress over them
as well. Your doctor will be able to determine what
exercises will help with your particular condition.
7. Lifestyle Changes : Avoid doing activities that
exert added stress on the affected joints, be it your
fingers, knees, back or hip. If it is absolutely necessary
to perform tasks that tax arthritic joints, make sure
Nisargopachar Varta : January 2012 31

naturopathy & yoga
you rest often to relieve joints before starting up
again.
8. Hot & Cold Therapy : Alternate heating pads
and ice packs can provide significant pain relief for
osteoarthritis, much the same way it helps athletes
and those with injuries. Both can help soothe joint
pain and stiffness.
9. Relaxation and Sleep : Learning to relax is an
important part of dealing with stress. Here are some
techniques you can use to relax.
l
l
l
Deep Breathing This is as simple as it sounds.
Breathing deeply can help you calm down and
unwind. And it feels great! Find a quiet place
and find five to 15 minutes to practice this every
day.
Progressive Relaxation Progressive relaxation
involves lying on your back and, starting with
your feet and moving up your body to your
face, consciously tensing and relaxing the
muscles in your body. Combine with deep
breathing for extra relaxation.
Creative or Guided Imagery Use this with deep
breathing and progressive relaxation. Either use
a tape of someone speaking or just use your
imagination to take your mind on a minivacation.
Choose a place that you feel you can
relax and go there mentally. See every detail
and see yourself there refreshed and relaxed.
10. Walking : A new Northwestern Medicine
research has shown that, people with knee
Osteoarthritis are more likely to walk fast enough if
they lead physically active lives,”The more active
people are, the faster they can walk,” said Dorothy
Dunlop, Associate Professor of medicine at
Northwestern University Feinberg School of
Medicine and leadine Author of the study.
11. Yogic approach : Yogic management of OA
effectively compliments standard, medical majors.
Yoga will never advocate drug management for the
symptoms of OA in isolation, while neglecting to
correct the underlying deficiency of diet, exercise, life
style modification and so on. A well rounded
programme on yogic therapy includes the following.
32
Asana like Pawanamuktasana-1(joints movement)
and Nadisodhana Pranayam and Bhastrika Pranayam
are very effictive for the patient of OA. If possible,
patients may practise Poorna and Laghoo
Sankhapraskhalana, Kunjal and Neti but following
simple vegetarian diet and fruits.
l Stretching of the muscles relieves strain on the
joints thereby relieving pain, tenderness, stiffness, and
improving the range of motion (Physical).
l
l
Yoga relieves stress (Mental).
Improving perspective towardS life (Spiritual).
Osteoarthritis can be best managedand prevented
by methods of Naturopathy and Yoga. Prolonged use
of Allopathic drugs like NSAIDs cause many adverse
effects like gastritis. This can be avoided by regular
practice of yogic methods.
Fasting
&
its Effects on Health
Dr. Rabin Karati
'When drugs are used, the
patient has to recover
twice – once from the illness
and once again from the
drug. Drugs cannot cure
disease, disease continues.
It is only its pattern
that changes'
According to Herbert M.Shelton, "Fasting is
abstention, entirely or in part and for longer or shorter
period of time from food and drink or from food
alone."
Nutrition may be conveniently divided into two
phases – positive and negative, corresponding to
the periods of eating and periods of abstaining
from food. Negative nutrition has received the
terms 'Fasting'.
The vital organs and tissues must receive
nourishment during a fast and this is provided by :
1. Food stock within the body.
2. The soluble portions of dead and ‘diseased
tissues’,
as insisted by Hazard and Carrington that,
during a fast toxins and accumulated waste are
eliminated first.
Physiologists tell us that, while it is activity that
disintegrates cells, there is no replacement by new
tissue unless there are distinct intervals of rest.
More people keep their bodies constantly
stuffing with food, forcing every organ to work
Gives the vital organs a complete rest.
Stops the intake of foods that decompose in
Empties the digestive tract and disposes off
putrefactive bacteria.
Increases the power of digestion and
assimilation.
Re-establishes normal physiological
chemistry and normal secretion.
l
l
l
Restores a youthful condition of the cells
and tissues and rejuvenates the body.
Permits the conservation and reconalization
of energy.
Gives the organs of elimination an
opportunity to catch-up with their work
and promotes elimination.
Clears and strengthens the mind.
Improves function throughout the body.
overtime. Their nervous and
glandular system are overtaxed
and their reserve forces called
upon to digest and assimilate
this surplus food or to eliminate
the poisons that result from its
decomposition in the intestines.
A 'Fast' reverses all this. This
surplus food is used up, the
toxins are eliminated, the organs
of the body get a needed rest
and are able to repair
themselves. It is not merely the
digestive organs which rest
during a fast. The benefits
extend to every part of the
organism.
Fasting Affects
Blood
Since, toxaemia underlies
most diseases, the elimination of
toxin from the blood and
through the blood from the cells,
is the chief factor in the benefit
which diseased bodies derive
from the fast.
Blood disease, whether the so
called specific disease (syphilis),
bacterial disease or just the
ordinary toxaemic conditions
should be treated by the fast.
Disorder of the blood such as
sclerosis, fibrosis, atheroma,
arthritis etc. in ready response to
the fast , and diseases of
lymphatic respond, as do those
of the blood and blood vessels.
Dr. George S. Wager says,
During long fast, the red blood
cell count increased from
1,500,000 to 3,200,000.
Haemoglobin increased from 50
percent to 85 percent and the
number of white cells declined
from 37,000 to 14,000.
Heart
Fasting takes a heavy load off
the organs and exerts lesser
resistance to overcome in
Pumping the full volume of
blood around the body circuit.
This easing of the strain enables
the heart to repair its structure
and improve its function.
For this reason, many cases of
both functional and organic
heart affection have been
benefited and even cured by
Fasting. Circulation is also
improved.
Stomach
During fast, the muscles and
glands of the stomach are
rejuvenated. So, Morbid
sensibilities are overcome,
digestion is improved, a
distended and buldged stomach
shrinks and tends to resume its
normal size. Ulcers heal,
inflammation subsides, gastric
catarrah is eliminated and the
appetite tends to become normal.
Lungs
Congestion of the lungs is
quickly relieved when food is
discontinued. Regenerative
power of the lungs is very great
detoxing method
Vital Reactions during 'FAST'
and the benefits are derived by them through fasting.
Liver, Spleen and Kidneys
The benefit derived by these organs from a fast
are striking. Abscess of the liver can be completely
and permanently cured by a fast lasting only four
weeks. The glycogen content of the liver is almost
entirely consumed during the first two days of a fast.
Enlarged spleens have been reduced after a few
days or weeks of fasting. Kidney affections of many
forms can be cured by fast.
Muscles
The skeletal muscles may lose 40 percent of their
weight by the time death from starvation occurs. The
heart muscles loses only about 3 percent. There is no
actual loss of the number of muscle cell in a fast of
ordinary duration.
Special senses
Except where certain pathology prevents it, fasting
invariably brings about.
a. Remarkable improvement in the faculty of
sight, clarity and brightness of the eyes.
Nervous System
Nerve function is greatly improved by a fast. In
cases of nervous and mental disorders, one must see
the effects of the fast to be able to appreciate the
patient. Paralysis and Semi – paralysis are frequently
overcome by fasting. Neurasthenia and even insanity
have also been curved, this way.
Nothing will increase elimination as will fast. When
we cease to take food and when we cease to absorb the
products of the decomposition of food, the organ of
elimination have an opportunity to catch-up with their
work.
Subjective Effects
a. All of our power is enhanced by fasting.
Memory is strengthened. Alteration
association and the reasoning faculty are
improved. Love, sympathy, intuition and all
the other spiritual powers are increased.
b. Fasting frequently brings relief to a person in
Pain. After a few days without food, the pain
usually disappears or is greatly reduced in
intensity.
b. Sharpening of sense of touch.
c. Refinement of the capacity of testing.
d. Improvement of the sense of smell.
