Anatomy & Physiology of
Yogic Practices
Dr. M. M. Gore
228pp. Soft cover book, 2003
Price Rs. 150/-
Published by Kanchan Prakashan
(This book is available at NIN Library)
Basic knowledge of human anatomy
helps to understand the mechanism of
yogic practices and their appropriate
application for the patient. But the
physiology of yogic practices differs
greatly from that of exercise physiology.
In the first part of the book author
explains about structure of human body
and working of various systems like
digestive, skeletal and respiratory system. At the end of
each chapter, a special note in the form of tips ‘from yoga
point of view’ makes readers understand various
concepts and aphorisms of yoga clearly.
As an example, we all know that our digestion is
affected by our thinking style. Anger, irritation, tense,
negative mind leads to various types of digestion
problems. The reason is that our appetite and satiety
centers lie in the hypothalamus. It is therefore advisable
to maintain mental peace and balance with a positive
approach, which can be achieved through yoga.
The second part of the book describes standard
techniques of various yogic practices like asanas,
pranayamas, bandhas, mudras, cleansing practices, their
concepts and the mechanism in terms of physiology
along with their traditional background. The psychophysiological
correlates of the yogic practices have been
given so that the readers will understand its therapeutic
Many people consider asanas as exercises and
practice them like exercises. But these differ in many
aspects. During an asana the movements are very
smooth and slow. The mild exercise at the joints and
muscles increase the blood circulation in that area,
without consuming much energy. The heart rate remains
in the normal range thus putting no extra burden on the
cardio respiratory system.
If asanas are performed in a relaxed way, the
coordination between the nervous and the muscular
systems increases, the muscle tone
is corrected and thus the emotions
are balanced.
Mudras and bandhas are special
features of Hatha yoga. They are
practiced to enhance the intensity of
the effect of asana and pranayama. In
bandhas there is an awareness of
suspended breathing movement.
This contributes to the tranquility and
stability of mind and also helps to
detach it from the past and future.
Mudras are postures with the help of
which the prana is controlled and
directed through a particular nadi.
During bandhas and mudras, specific muscle
sphincters are brought into action in order to stimulate
related nerve plexuses. For example, in ashwini mudra
the anal sphincters are alternately contracted and
relaxed. Later author also explains the scientific
background of the Om chanting. With rhythmic and slow
recitation of Omkar, all the nerves and other channels in
the body are cleaned and purified.
question & answer
Naturopath's Advice
u Dr. D. Sathyanath
Nature Cure Physician
My father aged 88 has peripheral neuropathy. This is probably
caused by diabetes. What is the cure for this in
Naturopathy?
Mr. Priyadarshan
Peripheral neuropathy is nerve damage in the arms and
legs caused by decreased blood flow and high blood
sugar levels.
Symptoms of peripheral neuropathy may include,
l Numbness or insensitivity to pain or temperature
l
l
l
l
A tingling, burning, or prickling sensation
Sharp pains or cramps
Extreme sensitivity to touch, even light touch
Loss of balance and coordination
These symptoms are often worse at night.
Peripheral neuropathy may also cause muscle
weakness and loss of reflexes, especially at the ankle,
leading to changes in the walk pattern. Foot deformities
may also occur if the condition is left untreated.
Blisters and sores may appear on numb
areas of the foot because pressure or injury usually
goes unnoticed. Neuropathy makes winter
weather more risky for seniors.
Naturopathy Treatment
l The first treatment step is to bring blood
glucose levels within the normal range to help
prevent further nerve damage. Blood glucose
monitoring, Diet planning, physical activity, and
diabetes medicines or insulin if necessary will
help to control blood glucose levels. Symptoms
may get worse when blood glucose is first
brought under control, but over time, maintaining
lower blood glucose levels helps lessen
symptoms. Good blood glucose control may
also help prevent or delay the onset of further
neuropathies.
l The best rejuvenator for the nerves is the massage.
It mechanically removes the free radicals and the
lactic acid which are produced in the inactive muscles
which causes further damage to the supplying nerves.
Studies have shown that massage induce improved
Peripheral Neuropathy
affects the nerves in
your toes, feet, legs,
hands, and arms.
blood circulation, increase oxygen capacity by up to 15%,
allowing muscles to relax and increase of endorphins. Massage
with evening primrose oil has shown to relieve symptoms
and may improve nerve function better. Self care is a
must to inspect the feet daily for any injuries. "Pumice stones"
are often used in beauty salons during the pedicure process
can be used to remove dry and excess skin from the bottom
of the foot as well as calluses.
l Alternate hot and cold packs to legs, Foot bath shall be
had to improve the innervations. In general, use cold water is
advised as they are more invigorating. Necessary care should
be taken to avoid the shoot up of pain.
l Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation therapy is
one of the effective and safe treatments for diabetic peripheral
neuropathy. Improvement in pain will remain effective
with prolonged use, but usually the symptoms return to
baseline on treatment termination.
l Infrared light is also very effective in Diabetic
Neuropathy Pain Relief. Infrared Light helps in reviving
the upper tissues of the pain area especially
foot area and works effectively in pain management.
Exposure to direct sun will equally benefit to
improve the nerve functions and to reduce the pain.
l Alpha-lipoic acid(ALA), a powerful antioxidant
found in food, may be effective at relieving
the symptoms of peripheral neuropathy. Vegetables
especially broccoli, spinach, Brussels
sprouts, peas and tomatoes are not only rich in
ALA but are very much suitable for Diabetics.
l Magnetic therapy may be helpful in improving
the microcirculation to the nerves. It is recommended
to use the “North” side of a magnet toward
the body when treating pain conditions. Using
magnets for a maximum of about an hour at a
time would be beneficial.
l Foot reflexology and Acupressure work synonymously
by improving the nerve signals. They work by
opening up the blocked energy channels, which hinders the
nerve signals.
from the desk of publication officer
On ‘International Youth Day’
The base of society and a
country; only the youth power, has
capabilities to change the scenario
in the overall development of the
country. The questions are, Is the
young generation given enough
opportunity to work for the nation’s
development by thinking in a
broader and farer perspective? And,
is our young generation willingly
utilizing its power to contribute to
the society? There are bunches of issues to be discussed
in this regard.
We talk about very important role of Science and
Technology in a Nation’s development. How many of
good upcoming scientists remain in our own country?
In fact, a very few! Because, they are actually not able to
have a better lifestyle and working facilities they may
get abroad. They are supposed to be the most
intellectual set of people in any country but they are
the most worried about a standard livelihood. Those who
do not get chances abroad, can also do very well in
Research but they are not even paid well in order to
make them more responsible and concentrated towards
their profession; a profession which is more in the
interest of the Nation. Most of the foreign companies
take our Engineers and Technologists. Of course, it still
plays a very important role in the development of the
country but it could be better if we had the same or
more repute, working with the Indian companies too.
The main agenda remains the same here.
How many of our youth have the resources to excel
in the field they actually want? Let it be Science,
Engineering, Medical, Media, Sports, Entertainment or
Farming, it’s the best which survives. Either due to their
family financial conditions or because of not being much
clever in their fraternity, they have to compromise and
quit. They ultimately seek for their livelihood. Though,
things have changed now to some extent which will
definitely make revisions in the performance of next
generation. It is about urban areas we are talking,
actually a small part of the country.
If we talk to the rural youth
also, we discover various talents
but they are not going to get
opportunities to excel in the
field they love. They have to opt
for farming or small businesses.
They are never provided with
better genuine facilities to help
them flourish their interest. They
are deprived of education, they
are deprived of health and they
are deprived of opportunities.
The second question still left to be answered. We; the
young generation is the most powerful part of the
society. We therefore need to be ready to take risks and
work for the nation at least to an extent. I know some
scientist who did not opt for working abroad though they
had wonderful chances. I have seen our engineers and a
very few of civil officers doing service to the rural public
and helping them uplift the standards of next
generation. I am aware of a few teachers who are
providing their free services in the rural areas directly
or through NGOs. Rejecting the luxurious life style to
devote a part of life doing such work indeed seems a
tough affair. But, there are people who are doing it now
and this is the only method for an accelerated
development of the country instead of blaming the
system everytime. We, the youngsters need to correct
us and that would help correct the system. It may be
observed as a difficult path but truly sensible.
System and the part of system both need to rectify
each other in positive views. System can be corrected
by providing with better opportunities to its most
precious limb, i.e., the Youth. Youth can play a wonderful
role by thinking a little beyond their own lifestyle and
putting up examples to the society and the system.
Passion rebuilds the world for the youth. It makes all
things alive and significant-Ralph Waldo Emerson.
Obesity
Obesity is defined as increased fat mass in
the body more than the normal limits. Now a
days, the development of the childhood
obesity is on rise especially in the developed
and the developing countries. The modern life
style, increased calorie intake and decreased
utilization are the main causes for the obesity.
The obesity affects both body and mind.
Naturopathy and yoga is not mere a system of
medicine but also a way of life. Thus, it helps to
treat the whole body as well the mind those
are affected by the obesity. By correcting the
poor life style to a healthy one, it prevents
further development and complications of
obesity as well.
Dr. L. Nivethitha
Childhood obesity
Obesity may be defined as an abnormal
growth of the adipose tissue due to an
enlargement of fat cell size (hypertrophy
obesity) or an increase in fat cell number
(hyperplasic obesity) or a combination of both.
Obesity is often expressed in terms of body
mass index (BMI) for example the WHO defines
Obesity as, "A BMI greater than or equal to 30 is
obese". Body mass index (BMI) is a simple index
of weight-for-height and it is defined as a
person’s weight in kilograms divided by the
square of his height in meters (kg/m 2 ). Obesity
has become a pandemic, with more than a
billion people affected worldwide. Over the
past 30 yrs, the frequency of overweight/ obese
children has increased. For example, in the
United States more than 30 percent of children
are overweight or obese. The data from the
International Obesity Task Force indicates that
22 million of the world’s children under 5 yrs of
age are overweight or obese and more than
two third of children aged 10 yrs and older who
are obese will become obese adults. Obesity in
Nisargopachar Varta : August 2013 13
naturopathy & yoga
young adults decreases life expectancy by 5–20 yrs.
The increased frequency and severity of childhood
obesity is accompanied by the expected medical
complications for example one in four overweight
children in the 6 to 12yr age group has impaired
glucose tolerance, and 60 percent of these children
have at least one risk factor for heart disease.
Causes
l Lack of knowledge.
l Changes in lifestyle.
l Decrease in physical
activities like walking,
cycling, swimming, sports
activities, and exercise etc.
l Increase in caloric intake.
l Watching television and
playing on the computer
than exercising.
l Changes in diet like nonveg,
fast food, soda,
bakery foods, canned and
bottled foods, oiled and
highly salted food, high fat
food and high
carbohydrate foods,
sweets, ice creams,
chocolates and other junk
foods have also
contributed to pediatric obesity.
l Maternal malnutrition and obesity.
l Intrauterine exposure to elevated insulin levels.
l Socioeconomic status.
l Disturbed sleep.
l Drugs like corticosteroids, anti-psychotic drugs etc.
l Psychological problems.
l Eating disorders.
l The defect in the hunger and the satiety centers
due to defect in the hypothalamus.
l Genetic and neuroendocrine cause like defects in
genes or the receptors of leptin, pro
opiomelanocortin, cocaine and amphetamineregulated
transcript (CART), and melanocortin-4.
Naturopathy management
The childhood obesity is mainly because of the
unhealthy lifestyle and the main objective of the
naturopathy management is to change the
unhealthy living habits of people and to teach them
a lifestyle in accordance with the laws of Nature. So
the naturopathic treatments are the best choice for
the prevention and the correction of the childhood
obesity.
1. Naturopath counseling
This is very important before the commencement
of the any naturopathic treatments, to make the
patient understand about their conditions and the
treatments. The counseling in childhood obesity is
important for both the children and their parents to
educate them to find out the causes and complication
of obesity and the importance of the naturopathy in
its management and prevention of further
development and complications.
2. Hydrotherapy
Hydrotherapy is internal or external use of water
at various temperatures in any of its forms (water, ice,
steam) for health promotion or treatment of disease.
Hydrotherapy with the use of clean water is very
effective as it opens up the pores of skin, imparts
lightness and alertness to the body. All systems and
muscles of the body are activated and the blood
circulation improves. Main hydrotherapy treatments
for childhood obesity are the aquatic exercises, aqua
jogging, walking in the water, aquatic games, aquatic
yoga, enema, neutral spinal bath/neutral spinal spray,
cold under water massage, cold hip bath, cold chest
pack, cold abdominal pack, cold water drinking, full
immersion bath with friction, cold douche to whole
body, wet sheet pack, steam bath, sauna bath etc.
3. Diet therapy
The diet plays an important role in the
development and progress of childhood obesity. The
wrong selection or combination and intake of high
calorie food is the main cause of obesity. The
awareness about the food what we are eating is very
important in the management and prevention of
obesity. For an effective weight reduction, diet should
be in the negative caloric intake (the intake of the
calorie should be slightly less than that of normal
requirements).
Avoid : Food rich in high
calorie, high glycemic
index food, high fat
and
high
carbohydrate diet
etc, non-veg, oily
foods, fried, highly
salted, spicy, packed,
colored, flavored,
wasted, preserved,
bakery, excess of roots
and tubers, white sugar,
maida products, soft
drinks, junk foods, ice
cream, dairy products, chocolates, tea, coffee, alcohol
and, avoid fruits like custard apple, mango, sapota,
banana, jack fruit.
Take : Low caloric diet, low fat and low
carbohydrate and protein diet, Fresh fruits and
vegetables like goose berry, lemon, sweet lime,
orange, pomegranate, guava, pine apple, apple,
pear, papaya, melons, grapes, berries, fig, onion,
garlic, ash guard, bitter guard, bottle guard, ridge
guard, cucumber, carrot, tomato, etc. take antioxidant
rich foods like foods rich in vitamin A,
vitamin E, vitamin C and more of green leafy
vegetables like curry leaves, coriander leaves, mint,
amaranthus, fenugreek leaves etc. Take fenugreek,
cumin seeds, ginger, dry ginger, pepper, coriander
seeds, sprouts, fruits or vegetable salads, vegetable
soups, ragi, wheat, bajra, jowar, corns, green gram,
black gram, Bengal gram, horse gram, soya bean,
fresh honey, green tea etc.
4. Fasting therapy
Fasting is an important modality in naturopathy. It
is a process of providing rest to the entire digestive
system for a particular period of time to attain
therapeutic purposes. The vital energy which digests
the food is wholly engaged in the process of
elimination during fasting. The Juice fasting (fruits
and vegetables) or fruit fasting is the safest and very
effective method of fasting for the children. The fruits
and vegetables are the lowest in calorie and rich in
the nutrients. So there will be a negative calorie intake
and the energy requirement will be fulfilled by the
accumulated glycogen and the fat. Normally once a
week fasting will help in weight reduction and health
promotion.
5. Massage therapy
The massage therapy
is a scientific and
systemic manipulation
of the tissues and
organs of the body,
aims at improving
the
blood
circulation and also
at strengthening
muscles and bodily organs. When the organs get
proper blood circulation, its functions will be
promoted that helps to improve the physical activities
and helps to reduce the body weight. Abdominal
massage, full body massages or massages to the fat
accumulated areas are useful to reduce the obesity.
These massages help to mobilize the fat from the
accumulated areas and also help to promote the
metabolism to burn more calories.
6. The mud therapy
Mud therapy is one of the simple but highly
effective treatment modality. The mud used for
therapeutic purpose should be neat, clean and free
from contamination of stone pieces or chemicals,
manure etc., and is taken from 5 to 6 ft. depth from
the surface of the ground. Mud packs and Mud baths
are the main forms of treatment. Mud pack to
abdomen, eyes and full mud bath gives coolness to
the body and reduces the physical and the mental
fatigue promoting its activity. It helps to promote the
functions of the abdominal organs and promote the
proper digestion, absorption of the nutrients,
eliminate the waste products.
7. Helio (sun) therapy
Helio therapy (sun therapy) is one of the basic
treatment in the naturopathy. The sun bath and
attapasnana (plantain leaf bath) is the most important
modalities of sun therapy. These are very effective
methods for the management and prevention of the
childhood obesity and its complications but care
must be provided during the treatment. Sun bath can
be taken in the early morning and in the late evening;
the Plantain leaf bath can be taken once a week.
These treatments are useful for the vitamin D
synthesis. The vitamin D helps to promote the calcium
absorption from the gut and strengthen the
musculoskeletal system and the cardiac functions.
The sun rays help to promote the blood circulation
and promote the metabolism, also it facilitates the
nerve conduction and neuromuscular functions.
These help to improve the physical activities thus help
to increase the caloric expenditures. The
attapasnanna helps to eliminate the waste product
from the body by promoting the perspiration which
is also useful for the management of childhood
obesity.
8. Colour (chromo) therapy
The colour (chromo) therapy mainly consists of
the seven colors of the spectrum i.e. Violet, Indigo,
Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange and Red and its
combinations. Each colour has different therapeutic
properties and effects. The red, yellow and orange
are the best colours for weight reductions and green
can be used when the over dose of the above
mentioned colours because of its balancing effect.
These colours can be applied by different methods
like direct application by the shade of colour glasses
exposed in the sun light, colour lights, application
of coloured stone, coloured bottles filled with water
or oil and exposed to Sun rays for specified hours.
This colour charged water is used as an external
application for skin disorders and it can also taken
as a tonic for digestive disorders. These colours can
be applied in daily life in various ways like coloured
light in the room, coloured clothing, colours in
dining form, foods charged by specific colors, wall
paints, color of furniture etc. Colored food, colored
charged water, massage with the particular color
charged oil, colored garments, color glasses, color
lamp, color papers etc.
9. Magneto therapy
The magnet therapy consists of the application
of different magnetic poles in various forms which
have different therapeutic properties and effects. The
South Pole is commonly applied in the treatment of
obesity as it has the heating properties and to
promote the metabolisms. This can be applied by
different methods like direct application of South
Pole, South Pole charged water or oil for specified
hours. This magnetic charged water is used as an
external application on the skin and also ingested
as a tonic for digestive disorders. Massage with the
South Pole charged oil, magnetic waist belt etc is
also practices.
Management through Yoga
Yoga consists of various techniques like
shatkarmas, asana, pranayama, mudra, bandha,
relaxation techniques, meditations, yogic
counseling and yogic diet etc. These practices help
to attain balance between body and mind, thereby
alleviate the diseases and promote the health. It
should initially be practiced under a trained yoga
teacher.
1. Yogic Diet
According to yoga, food is divided into 3 types :
Satvic food which nourishes the body and calms
the mind and provides better physical and mental
health.
Rajasic food which irritates the body and
aggravates the mind and produces hyperactivity/
aggressive behavior.
Tamasic food which sludge the body and mind
and produces hypoactivities/ laziness.
To reduce weight, children should take Satvic
foods (fresh fruits and vegetables etc.), avoid Rajasic
Nisargopachar Varta : August 2013 17

(spicy, non-veg etc.) and Tamasic foods (wasted foods,
bottled, packed foods, preserved foods etc.)
2. Asanas
Asana means a physical posture which is easy and
comfortable to the body. It helps to make the body
flexible and supple which is useful for maintenance
and promotion of the health and prevention of
diseases. As asanas are being mild to moderate
aerobic kind, during the practice the demand for
energy is fulfilled more from fat and less from
carbohydrate. When accumulated fat is
utilized to yield energy, its
amount gradually decrease to
an extent which is useful for the
obese.
Standing : sukshmavyayama, suryanamaskara,
tadasana, triyak tadasana, kati chakrasana, artha
kati chakrasana, chakrasana, ardha chakrasana,
trikonasana, garudasana, vrikshasana, utkatasana,
padhahasthasana.
Sitting: Padmasana, vjrasana, supta vajrasana,
sashankasana, yogamudrasana, gomukhasana,
paschimothanasana, vakrasana, ardha
matsyendrasana, matsyasana, naukachanlanasana,
chakkichaalanasana, simhasana, tittely asana,
marjariasana, vyaghrasana.
Supine lying posture: Uttan padasana, cycling,
naukasana, pawanmuktasana etc.
Prone lying posture: Bujangasana, triyak
bhujangasana, dhanurasana, shalabhasana.
Inverted posture: Vipareethakarani asana,
sarvangasana, halasana etc.
3.Pranayama
Pranayama means breath control or expansion
of vital/ life force. The pranayama effective for the
obesity are, hand in and out stretch breathing,
abdominal breathings, the heating pranayamas like
right nostril breathing, kapalabathi and basthrika
etc. nadishodhana pranayama, bhramari pranayama
etc. These pranayama helps to promote health and
general wellbeing. The heating pranayama helps to
increase the calorie expenditure by enhancing the
metabolism.
18
4. Bandha
Bandha means bind, lock or hold which indicates
holding of energy in a particular area/ part of the
body for a particular period of time. There are 4 types
of bandha depending upon the place where we are
holding/ locking the energy. The most useful bandha
for the obesity are the uddhiyana bandha, jalandra
bandha, maha bandha etc.
5. Shatkarma
The shatkarma means the six cleansing
process which is useful in the elimination
of the waste products
and keep the body clean
and healthy. This
cleansing process also
called as kriyas. The kriyas which are
useful for the obesity are neti, dhauti,
kapalapathi and trataka.
Conclusion
The childhood obesity is a
major health problem in the
world which is associated
with various other health
problems. The incidence
and the prevalence of
childhood obesity are
Photo Courtesy : www.yogawiz.com increasing day by day
because of the
modern life style. The modern medicine has no
particular drugs or the surgery for obesity without side
effects. The naturopathy and yoga system of
medicine helps to balance both body and mind and
promote the natural lifestyle. Hence, these play the
main role in the management of the obesity and
prevention of its complications without any side
effects.
Mud is one of the five great elements. Natural mud represents earth and it has tremendous
impact on maintenance of health and prevention of diseases. Mud has healing powers that can
restore the body’s balance by removing accumulated toxins. Mud is entirely composed of organic
substances that have absolutely no side-effect on the body. The earth contains many minerals that
are beneficial for human health. It is true that it can aid in the treatment of many diseases and health
problems. Minerals and trace elements present in the mud are known for its renowned effects and
healing properties. The Minerals found in mud are - sulfur, iron, magnesium, potassium, bromide,
iodine, silicon, selenium, calcium, zinc. Mud also has the remarkable property
of holding moisture for a long time, which has the cooling effect on
the part of the body applied.
In fact, mud bath has been popularly used by Ancient Greeks
and In modern times it again came in to prominence as a valuable
therapeutic agent in the last century trough Emmanuel Felke a
German born who was nick named Clay Pastor. Felke fond that
the forces of earth have remarkable effects upon the human
body especially during night (these effects are described
as refreshing, strengthening and vitalizing). Adolf
Just was one of the pioneers of nature cure, he
believed that all diseases can be cured if sleeping
or lying on the earth at night made customary.
Selection of Mud
For the treatment purpose mud can be taken from
either river side /Hill side mud/black soil/ potters mud
or multani mud also can used for various disease
condition. But the mud should be clean, free from
chemicals and other contamination. One should take
the mud digging the ground atleast 2-3 feet from
ground level, and remove the pebbles, decomposed
matter and other soil impurities. Area from which the
mud is taken should be clean and should be free from
waste and garbage.
Preparation of the mud
1. After selection of mud it should be exposed to
sun for 5-7 days ,so that all insects and bacteria
can be killed.
2. After sun exposures grind the mud and filter it.
3. Mud has to be soaked for 12 hours in mud, cement
or porcelain container before use for the
treatment.
4. Mud should not be soaked in aluminum, iron,
plastic or steel containers because it reduces t
chemical and magnetic property and it will not
remain cool.
5. If possible always use spatula for mixing and
application of mud. Avoid using hand directly.
6. Mix the mud well in the container make it a
smooth paste so it can be completely beneficial.
Before application the mud is mixed with water to
20
form a clay-like paste which is applied to the skin. The
mud should be smooth and not too sticky It is allowed
to dry in the sun until it becomes crusty and starts to
fall off. This may last anywhere between 20 minutes to
1 hour. With the help of water, the dried mud is made
wet again, and scrubbed off the skin. Do not use soap
to bathe post mud bath therapy. When the wet mud is
applied to the skin, its minerals are absorbed by the
skin and they enter our blood stream. Hence, this
therapy has an overall cleansing effect on the body.
The treatment should be taken for a minimum
duration of 2 weeks to obtain maximum benefits.
Mud Bath
Mud can be either applied directly or indirectly as
packs, it can be either local application or full mud
application. The full body application of mud is
known as mud bath.
Effects
1. It helps to improve the skin condition by
increasing the circulation and energizing the skin
tissues.
2. Effects of mud are invigorating and vitalizing.
3. It cools down the body.
4. It dilutes and absorbs the toxic substances of body
ultimately eliminates them from body.
5. The mud bath is found to tone up the skin by
increasing the skin tissues.
Nisargopachar Varta : August 2013

diseases like psoriasis, leucoderma.
8. It is useful in getting relief from rheumatic pain
or any kind of arthritis.
9. It cleanses, exfoliates, draws out toxins, hydrates
and improves the flow of nutrients to the skin
surface.
10. It helps in sun tan and hyper pigmentation of skin.
Mud pack
Packs applied locally in different places gives a
cooling effect by reducing the temperature locally.
After the preparation of the mud, spread it over, linen
or cotton cloth and folded according to the area of
usage. Place it locally for 15-30 mins.
Effects
1. Mud pack on abdomen helps in relieving
indigestion.
2. It is effective in decreasing intestinal heat and
stimulates peristalsis.
3. The use of mud pack is effective and beneficial in
the treatment of chronic inflammation caused by
internal diseases, bruises, sprains, boils.
4. The mud pack treatment helps to retain moisture
and coolness for longer time span than
compared to water packs or compress.
5. The mud pack relaxes the pores of the skin, draws
the blood into the surface, relieves inner
blockage and pain.
Nature Cure And Yoga For Andropause
(Male Menopause)
Dr. Kushan Shah
What is Andropause?
Andropause refers to a set of gradual physical and
psychological changes that men generally go
through, beginning in the middle age. Andropause
is equivalent to the menopause that women over 45
go through. Yet, in some ways it is quite different from
the female menopause. Common age of onset of
symptoms of Andropause is 51 to 60 years but also as
early as 35 years have been reported in literature.
History
In 1944 two American doctors, Carl Heller and
Gordon Myers in one of their article reported, what
we now describe as the male menopause. They
compared the symptoms with those of the female
menopause. Unfortunately, men were unwilling to
accept that they could also attain ‘menopause’. Men
with genuine symptoms were told that ‘this is just a
mid-life crisis’. Testosterone therapy was blamed for
its abusive purposes and so the concept of
testosterone replacement therapy for Andropause
22
was not well tolerated. Further TRT was discouraged
due to the panic of the side effects like prostate
cancer.
Andropause occurrs due to lower levels of
testosterone. After age of 30, testosterone levels drop
by about 10 per cent every decade. Rapid
deterioration starts after the age of 50. Men may
experience Andropause symptoms after around 25
percent drop of his Testosterone level.
Symptoms
Symptoms of Andropause can vary from man to
man which may include,
- Lack of energy.
- Decrease in strength and muscle power.
- Decrease in sex drive.
- Depression, anger and confusion.
- Hot flashes and night sweats.
- Deterioration in sports ability.
Nisargopachar Varta : August 2013
healthy over age
- Falling asleep immediately after dinner.
- Decrease in work performance.
- Thinning of bone and loss of height.
Any four or more from above may
need medical attention.
Nature cure
1. Eat nutritious, low fat and
high fiber diet.
2. Reduce calorie intake by
around 30 percent.
3. Drink lot of water.
4. Exercise and do yoga
regularly.
5. Take good sleep.
6. Make friends and groups to share your feelings.
7. Find new ways to relive stress.
8. Although there are many vitamins and nutrients
those are very important for adequate hormonal
functioning, specific nutrients have been researched
and found to be beneficial for men’s health and for
counteracting the effects of andropause. A few of
these nutrients are listed below.
Essential Fatty Acids : There is a group of fats that
the body is incapable of synthesizing on its own
known as “essential fatty acids” (EFAs). They include
omega 3 (linolenic) and omega 6 (linoleic) fatty acids.
EFAs are required constituents of every cell membrane
in the body and are required to maintain the fluidity
of these membranes, aid in producing and balancing
hormones and play an essential role in managing
inflammation. Classic signs of deficiency include
depression, mood disorders, memory loss,
hyperactivity, anxiety, dry flaking skin, inflammation,
arthritis, decreased bone density, muscle spasm, food
allergies, fatigue, increased body fat and most
important to our discussion, hormonal imbalance.
Prostate health is also directly tied to adequate
essential fatty acid intake and levels in the body
Zinc : The prostate gland has a unique characteristic
of storing high levels of zinc. Healthy prostate tissue
contains higher concentrations of zinc than all other
tissue in the human body. Therefore, it is no
coincidence that the level of zinc in the prostate gland
declines dramatically in patients with BPH and even
more so in patients with prostate cancer.
L-Arginine : It is an essential amino acid
that can be very effective for erectile
dysfunction that can help to
produce harder and longerlasting
erections and increasing
libido. Supplementation with
arginine has also been shown to
improve low sperm counts and
male infertility. Arginine
promote the production of nitric
oxide, a substance that opens up
blood vessels in the penis much like
the drug Viagra. But unlike Viagra, arginine is free of
side effects like Viagra and is relatively inexpensive.
Arginine also helps to stimulate the release of growth
hormone which also acts to stimulate sex drive. For
men, losing muscle mass and gaining more fat mass
during andropause can be very frustrating. Arginine,
along with a healthy exercise regimen can help to
increase muscle mass and decrease fat mass.
healthy over age
9. Acupuncture is one of the oldest form of
medicine, dating back thousands of years. It is an
energy-based medicine which acknowledges the
existence of unseen electrical energy in the body
which flows in documented patterns and pathways.
Disease occurs when there is an imbalance or
blockage of energy. Acupuncture is used to treat
many conditions ranging from pain relief to chronic
disease, to addictions (e.g. smoking cessation). More
importantly acupuncture is a great treatment
modality to use in conjunction with the
aforementioned therapies to treat hormonal
imbalances and fertility problems in men, combat
aging and stress and assist with insomnia, depression
and pain.
The aging process is related directly to the amount
of free radicals present in the body. Food rich in
antioxidant and phytonutrients such as fruits and
vegetables reduces the free radicals and thus slows
down the aging process.
Yogic therapy
Yoga practices help prevent onset of Andropause.
There are 3 special exercises you can perform.
Each of these ‘mudras’ or ‘bandhas’ work with
different areas of the sexual regions. When we
perform a 'bandha' we stop the breath at different
levels to regulate the energy to a particular part.
There are several types of bandhas. The ancient
classical text, the 'Gheranda Samitha'
described 25 mudras
and bandhas. (Note,
the term ‘mudra’ is
popularly used in
yoga to describe hand gestures. However, they are
‘locks’ and the term mudra can also be applied to
‘body-locks’). Of the 25, we will concentrate on few
of them.
In addition to the bandhas, there are yoga asanas
which can be practised to help delay andropause and
retain a man’s vitality and strength.
1. Ashwini Mudra : In this exercise, the muscles of
the anus are contracted and pulled upwards.
'Ashwa' means Horse and the exercise mimics the
movement the horse makes with its muscles after
emptying his bowels. The exercise focusses on quick
contractions. There are several ways to perform this
ashwini mudra. One method is described as follows:
You can sit in padmasana (lotus) or cross-legged
pose. Inhale and exhale breathing slowly.
Concentrate your attention on the anal region, but
don’t fixate it, let it be a natural relaxing type of
concentration.
Contract the sphincter muscles of the anus (rectum)
area. Hold for 2-3 seconds. Feel the squeeze. Relax
for few seconds. This is one round of ashwini
mudra.
As your practice is perfected and your stamina grows
you can repeat this exercise for longer and hold the
sphincter muscles for longer than 2-3 seconds.
Also you can increase the speed of the contractions
gradually.
2. Moola Bandha : This point is
situated between the anus and
scrotum - perineal point.
Note that, men contract a spot
between the anus and testicles. For
women, the point of contraction will be
the cervix. This exercise is also known as
the perineal lock.
This works with the 1st
chakra point which
is situated in the base of the spine. Mool means
root, source, origin.
'Bhandha' has several
meanings including
body-lock and
stoppage.
l
l
This bandha tones up the perineal muscles and
pelvic organs such as the prostate, bladder and
testicles which are stimulated and function more
effectively, by increasing sexual power,
strengthening the 1st chakra and helping to delay
ejaculation.
There is increased production of sexual energy.
Long-term yoga practitioners can direct the sexual
energies upwards rather than downwards into
sexual intercourse. This exercise is performed
regularly to help do so.
When sexual energy is directed upwards it turns
into “ojas”, which is then used for higher
intellectual purposes.
3. Vajroli Mudra : Performed by contracting the
genital area and pulling upwards to the abdominal
region. Testicles will be pulled upwards when this is
performed.
In the ancient classical yoga text 'Siva Samitha' the
vajroli mudra is described in Chapter III. It is
considered as a ‘secret’ mudra and is credited with
destroying the ego and illusions.
When you practice vajroli, what you are doing is
contracting and squeezing the urethral sphincter
muscles located at the tip of the penis. When you pass
urine and stop it midway these same muscles are used.
This example should give you an idea of where the
muscles are located.
4. Uddiyana Bandha : According to the ancient
classical text 'Siva Samitha' this bandha will give you
the strength of a lion. It is recommended to practice
this bandha 4 times a day. This will clean the intestines
and purify the body. This is an excellent exercise which
benefits the whole body. It also works with the
abdomen, improving its vitality and strength. The
abdominal muscles are exercised and regular
performance of this bandha helps improve digestion
and alleviate conditions such as constipation and
indigestion.
5. Shalabhasana (The Locust) : Locust works with
the spinal region and increases its flexibility helping
the body to remain agile and youthful. When the
spine is stiff or damaged it affects not only the
movements of other parts of the body but will
psychologically affect you also. As we grow older, we
lose flexibility of the spine. There are many yoga
practices those specifically massage and work with
the spine, helping it to retain its elasticity.
Regular and correct performance of locust will also
revitalize the bowel, liver and pancreas. It is also
excellent for people who experience back pain and
sciatica.
Conclusion
In conclusion , it may be stated that the male
menopause is a definite entity. It affects men over 50
years of age or sometimes earlier. Symptoms are
gradual and usually not pronounced as in the female.
Early diagnosis and prevention therapy can improve
symptoms.
Dermatitis is a common skin condition
characterized by inflammation of the skin – the
skin usually gets swollen, red and itchy.
It occurs in many forms and due to several
causes, few are known while others remain
unknown. This skin condition is not serious but
can cause much discomfort if not treated
properly.
The symptoms and signs of dermatitis may be
Itching, Redness, Swelling, Skin lesions. Its
diagnosis is based on symptoms as well as
medical history.
Certain tests may be performed to identify the
substance causing the allergic response and
these include Biopsy and Patch testing.
1. Contact dermatitis
Its common causes may be contact of
nickel, rubber, potassium dichromate or
paraphenylenediamine. Reddish marking and
itching will occur due to this.
This type of dermatitis occurs as a result of
direct contact with irritants such as Cleaning
products, detergents and Laundry soap powder
or soaps.
It may also be caused by contact with allergens
such as cosmetics, perfumes, jewelry, certain
metals, rubber, weeds or grass.
2. Irritant Contact Dermatitis
Non-allergic reaction that results from
exposure to an irritating agent (Physical or
chemical) producing cell damage and an
inflammatory reaction.
Its common causes may be chemicals like
acids, alkalis, soap, detergent or dusts, gases,
heat, cold, humidity and mechanical causes
like friction, rubbing, scratching.
Its treatment lies in avoidance of causative
agent.
Naturopathic approach
l Effective management requires relief from and
prevention of, itching while treating the underlying
metabolic abnormalities.
l The food and environmental allergens must be
detected and controlled; prostaglandin metabolism
should be normalized.
l Immune system abnormalities must be
balanced.
1. Diet
The patient should eliminate all
major allergens (milk, eggs and
peanuts account for the offending
food in approximately 81 percent
of cases).
As the patient improves,
allergens can slowly be
reintroduced and a stringent
rotation diet can be followed.
Some vitamins and minerals
such as Magnesium and Calcium
actually help reduce the severity
of allergic reactions. Prohibit all
types of animal products.
2. Hydrotherapy
For treating skin allergies, bathing in Epsom salt is
one of the easiest ways to supplement the mineral.
In a 2004, British study endorsed by the Epsom Salt
Council, researchers from the University of
Birmingham recruited 19 individuals to test the
effectiveness of bathing in magnesium sulfate.
For seven consecutive days, volunteers took a 12-
minute bath in water that ranged from 122 degrees
to 131 degrees Fahrenheit. Blood tests revealed that
magnesium and sulfate levels increased significantly.
If your skin allergy is only on your feet or hands,
you can dissolve magnesium sulfate into a half-full
bath and just soak the affected areas.
For treating a skin allergy, soaking more than two
or three times a day, may lead to excessive dryness.
3. Fasting Therapy
Observing the vegan diet, some patients
experience an improvement in the symptoms.
The concentrations of lactoferrin in serum reflect
the turnover and activity of neutrophil leukocytes.
When this protein was initially increased it fell to
normal values in most cases.
The improvement or impairment of signs and
symptoms was related to the
lactoferrin levels in serum.
4. Mud Therapy
Dead Sea (DS) minerals have
been used in a wide range of
dermatological conditions,
especially psoriasis, atopic
dermatitis, vitiligo and eczema.
5. Turmeric Bath
Several herbs used as
seasonings, including turmeric, red
pepper, cloves, ginger, cumin,
anise, fennel, basil, rosemary,
garlic, pomegranate etc. can block
nuclear factor-kappaB (NFêB)
activation of inflammatory
cytokines.
Dermatitis an inflammatory
disorder, should benefit from an anti-inflammatory
diet, identification and elimination and/or rotation
of allergenic foods and therapeutic fasting.
Curcumin gel yielded 90-percent resolution of
plaques in 50 percent of patients within 2-6 weeks;
the remainder of the study subjects showed 50- to
85-percent improvement.
Curcumin was found to be twice as effective as
calcipotriol cream (which generally takes three
months to exert its full effect).
The mechanism of curcumin is as a selective
phosphorylase kinase inhibitor, thereby reducing
inflammation.
6. Psychologic corrections
Determine if the patient has significant levels of
anxiety, hostility or neurosis. If present, assist the
shower natural products is a positive start; preferably
hypoallergenic, free from fragrances and harsh
chemicals such as Sodium Lauryl Sulphate.
3. Water
Water can be a big problem where Contact
Dermatitis is concern. Tap water contains vast
amounts of metals, minerals and harsh chemicals
such as Chlorine, Fluorine and pesticides in order to
kill off dangerous bacteria and microbes.
Contact dermatitis usually clears up without
complications in 2 or 3 weeks. However, it may return
if the substance or material that caused it can not
be noticed and avoided. It may also result in Bacterial
skin infections, if not attended.
Precautions
1. Avoid scratching
Try not to pick and scratch your Contact Dermatitis,
it will only delay the healing process. If you scratch in
your sleep, try trimming your nails short and
moisturizing well before bed - this should help to keep
itching at bay. Consider changing to a natural
moisturizer.
prevention through diet
Dr. Kamal Patel
Recent research has dramatically changed our
opinion about the role of diet in both prevention and
treatment of cancer.
To Prevent Cancer
1. Increase intake of citrus fruits and
dark green or yellow vegetables
for vitamin-C, Beta-Carotene,
Bio-flavonoid and plant chemicals.
2. Stop fatty foods which are high
in saturated fats like fried items,
dairy products, Non-Veg food etc.
3. Stop food which may contain
pesticide residues and
environmental pollutants.
It is becoming Increasingly clear that certain
dietary elements help to promote the development
and spread of malignancies (cancer), while others
slow or block tumor growth. Around 30 to 35 percent
of Cancers are found to be diet related.
The anti – Cancer diet
1. Enjoy plenty of vegetables and fruits
There are lots of Bio-flavonoid and other dietary
fibers, plant chemicals, folate and antioxidants, Betacarotene
and vitamin C in vegetable and fruits. These
are substances protect body cells by detoxifying
carcinogens. Folate is crucial for normal DNA
synthesis and repair. Its low levels are thought to
make cells vulnerable to carcinogens.
l A person should make habit of eating 3
different colored vegetables and 2 different fruits
daily, to prevent cancer.
5. Eating when you have cancer
Cancer patients may face problems like loss of
appetite, nausea, and other eating problems. The
2. Reduce your fat intake
following tips work for many cancer patients.
Numerous studies link a high fat diet and obesity
with an increased risk of cancers such as colon, uterus,
u Let someone else prepare food. Cooking odor
prostate and skin. There should not be more than
30 percent of total calorie intake from fat. It takes only
may provoke nausea. Food that is served at room
temperature or cold gives less odor than hot food.
a few changes in the diet to reduce fat intake. eg: u Have food with others in pleasant social
enjoy vegetarian diet, adopt low fat cooking methods
like baking and steaming, limit use of added fats such
atmosphere. Ask family members to bring homecooked
food to hospital after a check by dietician.
as butter, mayonnaise, oils etc.
u To overcome nausea, try chewing on ice chips
3. Eat more fiber
Increased intake of fibers fastens the transit of
or sucking on a ginger candy or lemon before eating
food.
waste through the colon and reduces the risk of bowel
u Rest in sitting or upright position for half an hour
cancer. A high fiber and low calorie diet reduces the
after having food. Lying flat may trigger reflux,
risk of cancers related to high body fat.
nausea and vomiting.
prevention through diet
u Plan Your meal for the time of the day
when you are least likely to
experience vomiting
and nausea, i.e., early
morning. Otherwise eat
small frequent meals
throughout the day.
u If mouth sores are
the problem, eat bland
food for example, rice and
curd milk and blended
soup avoid salty, spicy or
acidic foods.
u If a dry mouth makes
swallowing difficult, liquefy
foods in blender and moisten
them with low-fat milk and
gravies.
u If Diarrhea is a problem while
chemotherapy avoid fatty food, raw fruits whole grain
product and other foods that can make it worse.
Instead, eat bland, binding food such as rice, banana
or cooked apples.
Nature (body) is wise
Growing numbers of cancer specialists discourage
urging some cancer patients to eat when they don’t
feel like. In past, forced feeding in the form of enriched
dietary supplements, intravenous nutrition, or gastric
tube was recommended to maintain nutrition, but
these all approaches usually did not result in weight
gain.
Instead, many who were forced fed actually died
sooner; experts now believe this may be because the
feeding actually spurs tumor growth. Many medical
scientists believe that the anorexia and cachexia
(severe form of malnutrition and body wasting) that
occurs in advanced stage of tumor may be an example
of “Wisdom of body” as it attempts to starve the tumor.
In some conditions, cachectic patients are allowed to
do starving while doctors undertake aggressive
therapy to destroy tumor.
Millions of Indians take vitamin
and mineral supplements, often in
high dose, sometimes without
expert opinion. There is increased
intake of Beta-carotene and
vitamins A, C and E in the form
of medicines. Unfortunately,
this does not seems to protect
body from cancer. When
these all vitamins consumed
in the form of fruits and
vegetables, these do have
an antioxidant effect,
but when taken as
supplements or
medicine, these
substances may have an
adverse effect, which increase the
growth of tumor.
Why Not? Natural therapies are often used in
palliative care to provide comfort and relaxation. It
assist our body to fight against disease and to help
restore a healthy balance of body, mind and spirit,
resulting in a feel of overall well- being.
Palliation
The word Palliation originates from Latin root –
Palliate or 'Cloaked', i.e., mask a person’s pain.
The alleviation of a disease’s symptoms without
a cure can be termed as Palliare or Pallium.
Palliation is any form of medical care or treatment
that concentrates on reducing the severity of
disease. Patients with terminal diseases need
palliation. It’s a kind of cure that makes one feel
better, even though it can not cure them.
According to WHO, Palliative care is an approach
that improves the quality of life of patients and their
families facing the problem associated with life
threatening illness , through the prevention and
relief from suffering by means of early identification
and impeccable assessment and treatment of pain
and other problems.
Scope of Pallition
l Provided by a team of doctors, nurses, and other
specialists who work together with patients and
giving extra layer of support to patients. It provides
relief from pain and other distressing symptoms like
nausea, shortness of breathing etc.
l Palliative care is applicable at any age and any
stage of serious illness.
l Provides symptomatic relief with curative
treatment.
l
Affirms life and explain death as normal process.
l Addresses the needs of the patient and their
families.
l Improves the quality of life for both the patients
and the family.
l Specialized medical care for the people who has
serious illness.
l Focus on providing relief from the pain and
stress of a serious illness whatever the prognosis may
be.
l Offers a support system to help patients live as
actively as possible until death.
l Offers a support system to help the family cope
up during the patient’s illness.
Palliative Medicine
Medications and treatments that are said to have
an effect to reduce symptoms without having a
curative effect on the underlying disease or cause, is
called as Palliative medicine. For example, treating
nausea which is caused by chemotherapy.
Palliative medicine is appropriate for patients in all
disease stages, including those undergoing treatment
for curable illness and those living with chronic diseases
as well as patient who are nearing the end of life.
Who Need Palliation
The term 'Palliative Care' mainly is used for the
disease like Cancer, Chronic progressive pulmonary
disorders, Renal diseases, HIV/AIDS, Chronic heart failure,
Progressive neurological conditions etc.
The patients may get distress symptoms like,
Pain, Shortness of breath, Fatigue, Nausea, Loss of
appetite, Sleep disorders and others.
Sometimes, the side effects & severity of chronic
illness may trouble the patient and drop the level of
enthusiasm in life. Palliative care specially through
naturopathy & yoga and behavioral response is very
much useful in such cases.
Naturopathy & Yoga in Palliation
Through Naturopathy treatment, we can reduce the
severity of chronic illness and the side effects of
chemotherapy or any other treatment for chronic
diseases. The goal of palliative care is to improve the
quality of life with or without permanent cure. The
common natural therapies are as follows :
Diet &Fasting : Eat less, eat raw, eat simple and eat
natural foods. Fresh fruits and vegetables are immune
boosting and rejuvenating. Whole grains reduce the
risk of type-2 diabetes. Fasting eliminates the metabolic
toxic waste from the body.
Cryotherapy : Hot and cold applications reduces
the severity of pain.
Acupunture & Acupressure : It increases the
harmony of life and also gives symptometic relief in
diseases.
Yoga : Stretching and breathing exercises and
pranayamas reduce the risk of shortness of breath during
chemotherapy. Asanas and Meditations relax the body
and mind. It gives physical, mental, moral and spiritual
support to the patients. Behavioral treatments, such as
relaxation techniques, MSRT, PET and DRT reduce the
stress and strain due to chronic illness.
Allopaths Fasted Their Diabetes
Patients, A Hundred Years Ago!
Late Dr. M. M. Bhamgara
Of my two uncles who were
from the medical field, one had
gifted me a book titled The
Treatment of Diabetes Mellitus,
written by Elliott P. Joslin, M.D., who
was a Professor of Medicine at the
Harvard Medical School, as also a
Consultant Physician in Boston City
Hospital, about a hundred years ago.
The book was published from
Boston in 1916; in its preface, Dr.
Joslin had stated that the book was
a sort of detailed report of his 18
years of practice as a diabetologist.
It was one Dr. F. M. Allen Of the
Rockefeller Institute for Medical
Research who had introduced
fasting and emphasized physical
exercise in the treatment of
diabetes in the 1890s; and Dr. Joslin
had adopted Dr. Allen’s line of
treatment in his own practice, with
wonderful results to show to the
medical world in the early 1900s.
The 440-page book is highly
technical, with numerous
references from various medical
journals, detailing case histories of
glycosuria and hyperglycemia.
Under “glycosuria” are descriptions
of various types, such as alimentary,
emotional, physiological and
traumatic.
In this article, I have simply
culled some useful information for
the diabetic patients as also for
naturopaths treating them. Some
suggestions by Dr. Joslin follow.
(1) “A considerable number of
my milder cases of diabetes, by
giving up bread and bread
preparations entirely, have been
able to eat potatoes freely.” Of
course, the much maligned
vegetable was to be taken boiled,
baked or steam cooked only never
fried. Fried wafers, chips and
The Greek philosophers
Pluto and Socrates used to
undertake 10-day fasts,
once or twice a year.
Pythagoras too advocated
fasting; he had fasted for
40 days before appearing
for an important
examination conducted by
the Alexandria University.
As a professor, he used to
admit students only after
they undertook a fast for
a few days.
“fingers” are forbidden to
everybody, sick or well; in fact, no
food should ever be fried. Only
boiling, baking (without fats), and
steaming are the conservative ways
of cooking. Frying is the worst way
of cooking any food item. Refined
starch of bread and bakery products
are totally prohibited to all
diabetics, to all patients in general,
and to every one of us in general.
Refined starch includes polished
rice as well. And what is true of
refined starch is true of refined sugar
too; the consumption of refined
carbohydrates can cause many
ailments, besides diabetes, such as
dental decay, osteoporosis and
obesity. According to Dr. John
Yudkin, refined carbs can cause
cardiac ailments also.
(2) Almonds and walnuts, just
five or six of either, chewed very
thoroughly, can be of some good to
the diabetic. The pentosan,
galactan, and other hemicelluloses
present in certain nuts are the types
of carbs that do not readily form
glucose or dextrose.
(3) Dr. Joslin considers grapefruit
the best fruit for diabetics, since it
has only 5% sugar; pomelo, a little
known fruit with the same
percentage of sugar, is equally good;
blueberries, strawberries and other
sour fruits also are beneficial to the
diabetic. In passing, a German
diabetologist’s name can be
mentioned here; Dr. Eugene Heun
was a scientist who had his own
research center for finding out
which were the best fruits for the
diabetics. Besides the aforesaid
fruits, Dr. Heun considered apples,
pears, plums, peaches, and cherries,
as also the Indian gooseberry
(Aamla), and all violet colored
Indian fruits such as mulberry,
Jamun and falsa to be the top grade
phytonutrients that were
hypoglycemics. Even mildly sweet
melons were acceptable to him;
only mangoes, custard apples,
sapotas and very sweet types of
bananas were proscribed by
Dr. Heun.
(4) For those patients who had
the energy, Dr. Joslin used to
prescribe camping trips, canoeing,
mountain trailing and other
physically demanding activities,
which combined exercise with a
change of atmosphere. He has
noted in his book that such outings,
34
Nisargopachar Varta : August 2013
traditional health
which combined physical exercise
with mental relaxation, were
excellent stress relievers, and their
effect lasted for months in many
cases. To quote his words, “It is only
natural to conclude that if the
muscles, in which is stored one-half
of the carbohydrate in the body, are
kept in good condition by training,
a favorable effect must be
exercised upon the general
metabolism of carbohydrates. The
man who, in middle life, gives up
hard physical work and is promoted
to an office chair, with increased
mental worry, is exposed to
diabetes.”
(5) At one place, Dr. Joslin states,
“I have gradually increased the
exercise of all my patients, except
those unduly weak ... The effect of
this increase of exercise upon the
well-being of fat diabetics has been
pronounced, and it is striking how
many miles a semi ill or an obese
diabetic can learn to walk in just two
weeks. The patients are encouraged
to take their walks soon after their
frugal meals and to go outdoors at
least five times in a day. Even
FASTING DIABETICS, as a rule,
appear to do better when up and
about the wards, few hours a day,
than when in bed. Of course, caution
is necessary in suggesting this plan
to severe cases. But finally, it is
astonishing how much exercise a
diabetic in training can thrive on!”
(6) Dr. Joslin had introduced in
his hospital, didactic and practical
instruction in preparation of each
diabetic’s diet, individually. Almost
like a naturopath, he says in his
book, “In Hospitals There Should Be
Daily Lessons ... The Patient Is At A
School To Learn How To Save His Life
... The patient has to learn lessons,
and the sooner he learns, less need
he will have to see the doctor ... Let
The Patient Understand That He Is
At A School Rather Than A Hospital.”
(7) Dr. Joslin often employed so
called Fasting for a minimum of 4
days to a maximum of 9 days. The
hospitalized patient was kept on
water mostly, with just a cup of tea,
coffee or meat-broth. The other
regime employed successfully by
this doctor was a diet consisting of
leafy and other greens, tomatoes,
celery, cucumber, cabbage,
broccoli and other vegetables. He
some times alternated this
“vegetable day” with an OATMEAL
DAY, in which the diabetic was given
only 250 gm of oatmeal, and
nothing else!
In some cases he would
prescribe potatoes with the leafy
greens and tomatoes. Since there is
only 100 gm of starch in as much as
500 gm of potatoes, Dr. Joslin
justified its use, preferring it to
bread, which would have thrice as
much starch, and that too of the
deleterious refined type of starch.
(8) Other interesting findings of
Dr. Joslin are these: “Arteriosclerotic
changes in the vessels of pancreas,
liver and brain can lead to
degeneration of these organs,
which may lead to diabetes.”
“Albuminuria is often observed in
the diabetic, as also carbuncles and
gangrene. All these complications
can be avoided completely by right
diet and exercise.” Walks, other leg
movements to improve circulation
in the lower extremities, and even
climbing up and down stairs cause
hyperemia in legs; calisthenics also
were prescribed by Dr. Joslin to all
patients who were able to move
around. The doctor had found that
the diabetics were mostly
constipated; and he used to say,
“Physical exercise is the best
treatment for constipation.” He also
used to say, “If the accustomed
exercise is not taken, Eat Less.” And
further, he used to affirm, “Patients
must know that if exercise is
lessened, food intake will also be
lessened.” He advised five to six
sessions of exercise not only to adult
patients but also to children. And he
fasted diabetic children too; Dr.
Joslin’s observation was that “fasting
is borne perfectly well for a few
days, and with comparatively little
complaint by children.”
Conclusion
What Dr. Allen and his disciple
Dr. Joslin achieved in treating their
diabetic patients by judicious
fasting or vegetarian diets, besides
mild to moderate exercises several
times daily, is possible to achieve
today, a century later, with equally
successful results. Of course, they
used drugs available at the time, but
they prescribed and emphasized
the vegetarian fare, fasting, and
exercises more than they
prescribed the drugs. Since the
incidence of diabetes is increasing
worldwide and India has more
diabetics in the world than any
other country should not our
hospitals become health education
centers in order to check the high
morbidity and mortality of this killer
disease? To reiterate Dr. Joslin’s
words, “Let the patient understand
that he is at a school, rather than a
hospital. The patient is at a school
to learn how to save his life.” We wish
and pray our hospitals become
Health Education Centers and not
remain mere Disease Treatment
Centers; for unless this happens, not
only the incidence of diabetes, but
the incidence of all major killer
diseases, world wide, will continue
to rise, unmanageably. May the
doctors of all streams of medicine,
as also all the other patients
suffering from the worst of diseases,
heed our appeal!
