IN LIFE. JoIN ITS CULTUrED, MULTI-ETHNIC
PoPULATIoN For THE FEAST.
Since its stint as the Cultural
Capital of Europe in 2000
Brussels has been doing much to
improve its international image.
Contrasts and contradictions
are all part of the experience
– the medieval core of the Lower
Town couldn’t be more different
than the cosmopolitan Upper
Town with its wide boulevards,
monumental buildings and chic
shopping precincts. Brussels
is the birthplace of Art Deco,
and glorious buildings from this
era stand beside the Gotham
City-like modern architecture of
the EU quarter. This is all part
of Brussels’ rich tapestry and
makes exploring the city such an
adventure.
Hot tip!
Culture vultures will happily
swoop on the city’s impressive
range of museums while
shopaholics will not be
disappointed by the consumer
opportunities ranging from
antiques to cutting-edge
fashion. Best of all, Brussels’
exquisite dining scene offers
everything from the freshest
seafood served in the grandest
of surroundings to piping hot
waffles to be scoffed on an
atmospheric street corner or in
the serene confines of a formal
garden. The sumptuous locally
made chocolates are worth the
trip here alone and let’s not even
get started on the sheer diversity
and overall quality of Belgian
beer. Brussels is the place to
sample the best of it all.
Check out the Atomium (www.atomium.be) – the giant structure
resembling an iron crystal molecule magnified 165 billion times. It has
had a €24 million facelift and is looking as good as it did when first
unveiled for the 1958 World Fair.
Suggested Itinerary:
Day 1
Take in the amazing architecture of the aptly named Grand Place then indulge in
a little retail therapy at the elegant Galeries St Hubert, Europe’s oldest shopping
arcade. Museum hop around the Upper Town peeking into the Musées Royaux des
Beaux-Arts de Belgique and the Musée des Instruments de Musique, followed by
chocolate tasting in the Place du Grand Sablon.
Day 2
Learn all about the fine art of beer making at the Musée Bruxellois de la Gueuze then
sample a few more jars in one (or several) of the city’s many old pubs before sobering
up over a slap-up lunch of Belgian cuisine. While away the afternoon at the sublime
Musée David et Alice van Buuren, then the night exploring the cobblestone streets
of the Lower Town.
INTErNATIoNAL orGANISATIoNS THAN
YoU CoULD SPELL IN SCrABBLE – GENEVA’S
APPEAL IS FLAWLESS.
From the competing chatter
of scores of languages
heard on its streets, it would
seem like the whole world lives
in Switzerland’s third-largest
city. Home to the United
Nations, the World Health
Organisation and a host of other
international bodies, Geneva is
a cosmopolitan city packed with
secretive banks, luxury jewellers
and amazing chocolate shops.
Once part of the Roman empire,
this calm, efficient place has long
been the envy of Europe. Watchmaking,
banking and commerce
are well-established industries
but it was the birth of the Red
Cross here in 1864 that set
Geneva on the road to becoming
the international melting pot it
is today.
Hot tip!
Although it ranks as one of the
world’s most expensive cities, it’s
possible to visit Geneva and not
break the bank. It costs nothing
to enjoy the views across Lake
Geneva or the languorous
atmosphere of the old town and
the many parks and gardens.
Geneva’s dining scene is the
best in Switzerland. For the
culinary curious on a budget, the
multi-ethnic Les Pâquis district
is the place to head, while the
rejuvenated factories of Carouge
are the location of alternative
clubs and bars with attitude.
Want to avoid the tourist trail? Then follow one of nine thematic,
colour coded walks devised by Geneva’s city planners to off-beat
sights and locations. Pick up a leaflet at the tourist office or go to
www.ville-ge.ch/plan-pietons.
Suggested Itinerary:
Day 1
Wander along Lake Geneva’s left bank avoiding the spray from the Jet d’Eau, the
world’s tallest fountain. Hit the old town for lunch then return to the water to board a
Les Mouette boat for a trip across the lake to the Parc de la Perle du Lac. The avant
garde Musée d’Art Moderne et Contemporain (MAMCO) is also worth checking out
for its sculptures and performance art.
Day 2
Take a tour of the UN headquarters, the Palais des Nations. Book ahead if you plan
to take a similar tour of CERN, the giant nuclear research lab where the world wide
web was created in 1989. Taste the bohemian life of the Italianate area of Carouge
where funky bars, restaurants, boutiques and artists’ workshops fill the narrow streets.
1km = 0.6 mile approximately. The featured distances on the map correspond to the approximate distance
between the city centre and the hotels. For a full list of hotels and other destinations, see pages 28-35.
FAMED For ITS GASTroNoMIC DELIGHTS.
The intellectual and
cultural capital of Alsace
is a meeting place of French
and Germanic cultures. After
centuries within the Germanic
Holy Roman Empire (during
which period its monumental
pink sandstone Cathédrale Notre
Dame was built), Strasbourg
became part of France in 1681.
The border shifted back and forth
a few more times until, following
World War II, Strasbourg
– the ‘City of the Roads’ – was
resurrected as the political heart
of the European Union (EU).
It’s here that you’ll find the EU
parliament as well as the Council
of Europe and European Court of
Human Rights.
Hot tip!
Politics aside, Strasbourg is
a beautiful city packed with
museums and focused around
the Unesco World Heritage
listed Grande Île (Grand Island),
a pedestrianised paradise for
the aimless ambler. The narrow
streets of the old city behind
the cathedral are particularly
enchanting at night, while by
day you shouldn’t miss out
on the fairy tale Petite France
quarter. In and around here
you’ll discover the traditional
Alsatian restaurants known as
winstubs (literally wine rooms).
These convivial eateries with
their warm atmosphere, bare
beams and shared benches,
serve up comforting dishes
based on pork and veal,
washed down with local
wines and beers.
Strasbourg’s museums (www.musees-strasbourg.org) are free on the first
Sunday of the month. Also enquire about the Pass Musées, a good-value
pass covering all of the city’s museums.
Suggested Itinerary:
Day 1
Take an early morning stroll through the picturesque Petite France neighbourhood
before the tourist hoards arrive. Ready your camera to snap the lovely panorama of
the River Ill from the nearby Barrage Vauban. Head into the heart of the Grande Île
navigating your way to the Gothic Cathédrale Notre Dame by its 142m spire. Lunch
at a winstub, then explore the impressive art collection of the Musée l’Œuvre Notre-
Dame, occupying a group of magnificent 14th- and 16th-century buildings.
Day 2
Journey to the suburb of Cronenbourg for a thirst-quenching tour of the major
brewery Brasseries Kronenbourg. Dip into the various museums of the Palais Rohan,
once home to the city’s princely bishops. Enjoy some more beer and wine at a
convivial bar such as La Taverne Française (12 av de la Marseillaise).
1km = 0.6 mile approximately. The featured distances on the map correspond to the approximate distance
easygoing self-confidence and
the harbour that make Germany’s
second largest city so wonderful
to visit.
Hot tip!
Immigrant workers mingle
with students among the
Portuguese, Turkish and Asian
eateries of vibrant St Pauli and
Schanzenviertel. Shipping,
TV and newspaper magnates
drive their Porsches up to lavish
mansions in leafy Blankenese,
Harvestehude and Winterhude.
Take a cruise around the Alster
Lakes and the neo-Gothic
Speicherstadt warehouse
district, or haggle at the rowdy
fish market as cargo ships
navigate the Elbe River. And
if this hubbub isn’t enough to
hold your interest, there are
huge brown-brick buildings
shaped like ocean liners in
the Merchant’s District and
the HafenCity archipelago,
the largest building project
in Europe.
Rather than a costly cruise, use the city’s inexpensive ferries for a
sightseeing trip along the Elbe. A recommended route is to catch Ferry
No 62 from Landungsbrücken towards Finkenwerder and change there
for the No 64 to Teufelsbrücke.
Suggested Itinerary:
Day 1
Explore the Altstadt, home to Hamburg’s opulent baroque town hall, the Rathaus,
and the Alsterarkaden, elegant Renaissance-style arcades sheltering shops and cafés
alongside a canal. Then head to the Merchant’s District to marvel at the brownbrick
Chile Haus shaped like an ocean liner. Relax on a cruise across the Inner and
Outer Alster Lakes (Binnenalster and Aussenalster) – it’s a great way to appreciate
Hamburg’s elegant architecture.
Day 2
If it’s Sunday, get up early for the boisterous Fischmarkt in St Pauli, a Hamburg
institution since 1703; on any evening, this area has a great bar scene. Hamburg’s
main shopping drags – Spitalerstrasse and Mönckebergstrasse – are located back
near the Alster Lakes; find more elegant shops within the triangle created by
Jungfernstieg, Fuhlentwiete and Neuer Wall. Don’t leave town without dining
along the Elbmeile Hamburg’s new gastro strip.
Sprinkled across a crinkly
rocky islands, the Finnish capital
was founded in 1550 as a rival
to the Hanseatic trading port of
Tallinn, just across the Gulf of
Finland. The harbour remains
at Helsinki’s heart and watching
the giant ferries glide into and
out of the port is a defining
memory and essential Helsinki
experience.
Winter in Finland is without
doubt chilly, but the addition
of snow adds a sparkling
white glamour to this stylishly
cool city renowned for its
off-beat bars and restaurants
owned and designed by avant
excellent – come here to pick
up international brand-name
homewares by Artek, fashions
and fabrics by Marimekko,
jewellery by Kalevala Koru and,
of course, the latest mobile
Helsinki has a very different feel
to the rest of the country, partly
because it was once Finland’s
sole point of contact with
almost all the rest of the world.
Delightful Art Nouveau buildings
line the streets, there are
elegant cafés and local heritage
is carefully preserved in dozens
of museums and the wonderful
saunas and baths that are so
much a part of Finnish culture.
The Helsinki Card is a pass that covers urban transport, entry to
over 50 attractions in and around the city and even discounts on day
trips to Tallinn. It’s available at the tourist office, hotels, kiosk and
transport terminals.
Suggested Itinerary:
Day 1
Finns are world-class coffee drinkers; join them for a cup at one of the city’s many
cafés such as the elegant Café Strindberg on the Esplanad or the charming Café
Ursula which has lovely views across Kaivopuisto Park. Next nip into Kiasma, Helsinki’s
outstanding museum of contemporary art. From here you’re well placed for browsing
the shops of the city centre, including the department store Stockmann, a prime
hunting ground for well-priced souvenirs and local handicrafts.
Day 2
Pay your respects at the Tuomiokirkko Lutheran Cathedral, which dominates
handsome Senate Square, and the stunning Orthodox cathedral on Katajanokka
Island, where you’ll also find many tempting eating options. Warm up at one of
Helsinki’s traditional saunas and heated swimming pools such as the Art Deco-styled
Yrjönkadun Uimahalli (Yrjönkatu 21) or the historic Kotiharjun Sauna (Harjutorinkatu 1).
nowhere else is quite
holidaymakers since the time of
the Roman emperors, the great
port was for many centuries a
capital of the region and only
just missed out on the top job
when Italy was formed in 1860.
The centro storico, or historic
centre, is packed with ancient
churches, a medieval university
and numerous restaurants and
cafés. Much of it is looking
splendid following a facelift over
the last decade, although there’s
still plenty of gritty scenes of
washing hanging from windows
and urban decay to delight those
who feared that Naples’ in-yourface
reality may have gone the
way of Pompei.
Hot tip!
With brooding volcanic Mt
Vesuvius in the background
it’s hardly surprising that
Neapolitans have a devil-maycare
reputation and a hedonistic
lifestyle which includes healthy
appetites for eating and
shopping. You can combine
these two pleasures at Naples’
colourful open-air markets,
among Italy’s best. Whether
you’re after the latest luxury or
something cheap and cheerful,
Naples has the emporium for
you. All the top Italian designers
are represented here, but the
city is also particularly good for
small shops stocking unique
goods, such as jewellery
made of coral or Christmascrib
miniatures, a Neapolitan
speciality known as presepi.
The Campania Artecard, a ticket covering museum admission and
transport in the city and surroundings, is a great investment. It can be
bought at train stations, newsagents, participating museums and via
the internet. (www.campaniartecard.it)
Suggested Itinerary:
Day 1
Enjoy the peaceful cloisters of the Basilica di Santa Chiara, a spectacular monument
to Italy’s restoration experts. Then head past the densely packed palazzi (mansions)
and churches of the centro storico to the incredible Cappella Sansevero.
After a pizza lunch, admire the ancient mosaics and sculptures at the Museo
Archeologico Nazionale, then limber up your credit card at the smart shops along
the well-heeled Via Toledo.
Day 2
Take in the fabulous art collection at the Palazzo Reale di Capodimonte and the 2nd
century frescos of the Catacomba di San Gennaro. Alternatively make a half-day
trip out of town to Mt Vesuvius and Pompei. Leave time for the designer boutiques
around Piazza dei Martiri where you can also enjoy a coffee at La Caffettiera or
browse the shelves at Feltrinelli, Naples’ best bookstore.
With origins stretching back
to the 7th century, Kraków
was Poland’s royal capital for 500
years and remains the nation’s
symbolic heart. Long a seat of
learning (Nicolaus Copernicus
studied at the city’s Jagiellonian
University from 1491 to 1495),
Kraków miraculously emerged
intact from the destruction of
WWII, only to be closeted behind
the Iron Curtain for the next 40
years. It has now re-emerged,
triumphant, as Poland’s bestpreserved
medieval city.
Bisected by the Wisła River, the
most interesting area of the city
lies on the northern bank around
the pleasingly compact Stare
Miastro (Old Town) centered
on the Rynek Główny, Kraków’s
great medieval market square.
Hot tip!
The asymmetrical St Mary’s
stands in one corner while at the
centre is the magnificent Cloth
Hall; in the upper galleries you’ll
find the city’s finest collection of
Polish art.
Birthplace of Pope John Paul
II, Kraków is a deeply religious
place; monks, nuns and priests
are a common sight and it’s
rare for a church to stand
empty. Even so, this vibrant
and cosmopolitan university
town retains a bohemian air,
with students and intellectuals
hanging out at the countless
cafés and bars. Seldom a night
will go by when you can’t
enjoy some performing arts or
musical entertainment.
A short walk northwest of the Rynek Główny is the quirky House Under the
Spider (Karmelicka 35), a grand mansion decorated with scores of Gothic
gargoyles and a carved spider sitting at the centre of a web.
Suggested Itinerary:
Day 1
Hike up Wawel Hill to Kraków’s magnificent castle and cathedral. Descend the
135 steps through the Dragon’s Cave to the banks of the Wisła. Head north to the
bustling Rynek Główny, zoning in on the Cloth Hall for art viewing and souvenir
shopping. Come nightfall sample one of the city’s excellent jazz clubs or attend the
opera at the elegant Slowacki Theatre.
Day 2
Journey 15km southeast of the city to the Unesco World Heritage listed Wieliczka
Salt Mine. Deep underground you’ll discover the ornamental Chapel of the Blessed
Kinga – everything, including chandeliers and altar – is carved from salt. Return
to Kraków to explore the old Jewish enclave of Kazimierz, calling into the Old
Synagogue and the excellent Ethnographical Museum. Sample Jewish cuisine at
one of the several atmospheric restaurants and relaxed cafés of the area.
To be tired of London, is
certainly to be tired of life.
The UK capital is a timeless
classic where deeply ingrained
tradition collides spectacularly
with vibrant modernity. Nowhere
else would you find a building
like the wildly successful Tate
Modern, occupying a former
power station, squaring up to
graceful St Paul’s Cathedral
across the Millennium Bridge.
Further down the Thames the
clash of icons is repeated with
the Houses of Parliament and the
London Eye.
Not far shy of celebrating its
2000th birthday, London can
fairly claim to have written the
book on art and architecture.
Hot tip!
Royal patronage and the
spoils of a global empire have
bequeathed the city a treasure
trove of art; dive into the riches
of institutions such as the
National Gallery and Victoria &
Albert Museum then re-emerge
to explore the contemporary
space of Hoxton’s White Cube
Gallery.
Whether your taste in
architecture runs to the
magnificence of palaces, the
solemnity of churches or the
contemporary clean lines of the
gherkin-shaped 30 St Mary Axe
skyscraper, London will deliver.
However much you think you
know it, this ever-evolving city
is guaranteed to yield delightful
surprises and new discoveries.
Combine a visit to both Tate Modern and Tate Britain with a cruise along
the Thames by taking the Tate-to-Tate ferry (10am-5.30pm; £4). Decorated
by Damien Hirst, the ferry also stops en route at the London Eye.
Suggested Itinerary:
Day 1
Take an early morning spin in the big wheel of the London Eye, then cross
Westminster Bridge, paying your respects to Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament and
Westminster Abbey en route to Trafalgar Square and the big hitting art collections of
the National Gallery and the more manageable National Portrait Gallery (at whose
Portrait restaurant you could have lunch). Shopping around Covent Garden could
could be followed by a gallop around the British Museum – although either pursuit
could pleasantly fill an afternoon. Grab a pre-theatre meal in Soho, returning later
for a nightcap in one of the area’s multitude of buzzy bars.
Day 2
Get acquainted with the Wallace Collection’s treasure trove of 17th- and 18th-century
art. London’s finest small gallery is not far from Bond St tube station from where you
can take the Jubilee Line south to London Bridge, close by the Tate Modern. After
exploring this phenomenal modern art gallery, stroll across the elegant Millennium
Bridge towards Sir Christopher Wren’s masterwork St Paul’s Cathedral; Norman
Fosters’ modern icon, 30 St Mary Axe (nicknamed the Gherkin), is framed off to
the right. Wander down Ludgate Hill to Fleet St to explore the atmospheric Inns of
Court, the heart of legal London. Brave the crowds inspecting the distinctive Temple
Church, which had a starring role in The Da Vinci Code, or avoid them by heading to
Sir John Soane’s Museum, one of London’s most atmospheric and fascinating sights.
Revive over a pint in the spectacular Victorian surrounds of High Holborn’s Princess
Louise pub.
it flourished as a trading port.
The historical city centre, with
its broad plazas, magnificent
cathedral (reputed home of
the Holy Grail) and Unesco
World Heritage listed La Lonja
commodity market hall, is a joy
to behold.
However, it’s Valencia’s
contemporary architecture that is
causing the biggest buzz today,
Hot tip!
with all eyes turned towards
the stunning Ciudad de las
Artes y las Ciencias (City of Arts
& Sciences). This 350,000 sq
metre complex is proving more
popular than Madrid’s Prado;
the highlight is the fabulous
Oceanogràfic aquarium. The
Institute Valenciano de Arte
Moderno (IVAM) is one of
Europe’s leading repositories of
contemporary art while the fine
art on display at the Museo de
Bellas Artes – including works by
El Greco, Murillo and Goya – has
benefited from an extensive
renovation of the building.
The harbour is also back in the
spotlight, spruced up for 2007’s
America’s Cup yachting regatta
from April to July.
Attend a concert at the monumental Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia, another
bold creation of Santiago Calatrava. It took nine years and over €250
million to build this ambitious arts complex, hailed as the 10th wonder of
the world.
Suggested Itinerary:
Day 1
A day will fly by at the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias; the spectacular white
buildings are mostly the work of internationally renowned local architect Santiago
Calatrava and include the wonderful Oceanogràfic aquarium, the Museo de las
Ciencias Príncipe Felipe looking like the skeleton of a giant whale, and the brooding
Hemisfèric housing a planetarium, IMAX cinema and laser show.
Day 2
Head to Plaza del Mercado where you’ll find both the colourful Mercado Central
market and the former silk exchange La Lonja, a Gothic beauty whose rib-vaulted
ceiling is held aloft by soaring columns looking like giant sticks of barley sugar.
Later compare and contrast old and modern art at both the Museo de Bellas Artes
and Institute Valenciano de Arte Moderno. For dinner sample paella, the dish that
Valencia bequeathed to the world.
1km = 0.6 mile approximately. The featured distances on the map correspond to the approximate distance
between the city centre and the hotels. For a full list of hotels and other destinations, see pages 28-35.
