Common concern to contractors & how to handle them
08:00 – Quantitative and qualitative data on the Qatar & GCC Project Market
A comprehensive forecast and assessment of the projects market in the region
The GCC projects market has struggled so far in 2012 after a pick-up in activity in Qatar and the UAE is
not enough to offset a slowdown in Saudi Arabia, the region’s largest projects market.
Just $55bn worth of projects were awarded in the GCC in the first half of the year, some 10 per cent
lower than the equivalent period in 2011, and the worst performance overall since 2005. The
comparatively weak performance means that the market will struggle to match the $130bn worth of
contracts awarded in 2011, which itself was also the lowest annual total since 2005.
Edward James, Head, MEED Insight
Edward James has been with MEED for nine years. Until September 2008 he was MEED’s Gulf Bureau
Chief. He wrote features and news for MEED magazine on nearly all of the countries of the region. His
specific areas of expertise are hydrocarbons, power and water, and the petrochemical market. He has
also worked as a consultant in the Gulf for UK risk consultancy firm Control Risks. He is a regular guest
commentator on Middle East issues for news channels such as the BBC, CNN and ABC News. He also
has a degree in Arabic.
