The World is Coming!<br />

Palm Springs Chosen as Host Town to Special Olympians<br />

Palm Springs is honored to be a Host Town for the <strong>2015</strong> Special Olympics<br />

World Games, and we are deeply honored to be chosen to participate in<br />

the Law Enforcement Torch Run Final Leg for the <strong>2015</strong> Special Olympics<br />

World Games.<br />

On May 14, <strong>2015</strong>, the “Flame of Hope,” the official torch for the Special<br />

Olympics World Games Los Angeles <strong>2015</strong>, was lit at the Sacred Site of<br />

Pnyx, opposite the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. This will formally began<br />

the journey to the World Games. In keeping with Olympic tradition and<br />

custom dating back to the Ancient Greeks, the torch was lit by the sun’s<br />

rays and will remain lit until the end of the Games on August 2, <strong>2015</strong>.<br />

Over the course of 46 days, in a hand-to-hand exchange, over 20,000<br />

participants throughout the nation will be carrying the Special Olympics<br />

Flame of Hope across the country, helping to deliver the flame to Los<br />

Angeles for the Special Olympics World Games. The City of Palm Springs<br />

is honored to be a part of this amazing journey.<br />

On Saturday, <strong>July</strong> 18, <strong>2015</strong> Mayor Steve Pougnet, along with local law<br />

enforcement and Special Olympic Athlete Maria Brandt, will participate<br />

in the Law Enforcement Torch Run Final Leg, the last journey of the Flame<br />

of Hope throughout the State of California. The Flame of Hope will be<br />

carried to the Opening Ceremonies of the Special Olympic World Games<br />

in Los Angeles.<br />

The event will start at the Palm Canyon Theater parking lot on N. Palm<br />

Canyon Drive at 6:30 p.m. and will end at the Palm Springs Convention<br />

Center at 7:00 p.m. A community ceremony celebrating the Final Leg tradition,<br />

which will be open to the public, will be held at the Palm Springs<br />

Convention Center.<br />

The Flame of Hope will complete its journey on <strong>July</strong> 25th when the Law<br />

Enforcement Torch Run Final Leg team carries it into the Opening Ceremony<br />

of the <strong>2015</strong> Special Olympics World Games and ignites the cauldron<br />

at the historic Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, site of the 1932 and<br />
