Winning art by children
from around the world
Since 1991, Colgate Bright Smiles, Bright Futures ® has reached 500 million children worldwide.

Over Years
of Oral Health Education
for Children!
The award-winning Colgate Bright Smiles, Bright Futures ® global oral health education program continues to spread smiles
to children everywhere. Each year, Bright Smiles, Bright Futures TM (BSBF) reaches over 50 million children and their families in
30 languages and 80 countries throughout the world!
The BSBF Philosophy
From the tiniest community to the most populated urban center, BSBF inspires kids to take control of their own oral health. Using Dr. Rabbit and
Dr. Brushwell — the engaging cartoon dentists — as its mascots, the program speaks out to children in ways that intrigue and inspire them.
Bright Smiles, Bright Futures TM is a comprehensive
classroom program — but it’s a philosophy, too.
It’s all about giving teachers, children, and families
the tools they need to make good oral health
a permanent part of their lives. With its focus
on prevention, the program builds self-esteem
and teaches good oral health practices that help
children’s smiles last a lifetime.
Welcome to the World of Colgate Bright Smiles, Bright Futures ® . . .
Teachers
Pre-K — 3
Making It Easy to Teach Oral Health!
With BSBF, oral health becomes part of the everyday classroom environment!
For teachers today, the greatest challenge is having time to fit in everything
they need to teach. BSBF fits into the existing curriculum, providing quality
classroom materials that can be used to teach the required classroom
subjects — like language arts, science, social studies, and math.
High-quality Materials = Memorable Learnings
The BSBF program was developed with an International Advisory Board
of educational, dental, and multicultural experts, and Teachers tested with children
and teachers in real classrooms. Since its inception in Pre-K the U.S., — 3
BSBF has
worked side-by-side with the Head Start Bureau, Maternal and Child
Health, and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to
provide materials appropriate Teachersfor younger children.
Pre-K — 3
Over the years, BSBF has included a variety of classroom
components and is continually updated to engage and excite
both teachers and children. The videos in the program have
received the prestigious “Silver Screen Award” from the U.S.
International Film & Video Festival, and the kits have been
recognized as a tool for outstanding achievement in social
commitment by the Globals Healthcare Communications
Competition.
It’s All About Bright Smiles!
Above all, the crowning achievement of BSBF truly lies in the faces of
the smiling children who participate in this confidence-building program,
year after year. Children discover that they can take control of their own
oral health — which is what BSBF is all about.
DISTINGUISHED ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Colgate recognizes that fostering partnerships between governments, health care and educational organizations, professional associations,
and health care providers strengthens the impact of the BSBF initiative around the world.
In the Global Community
Reaching children with a message of prevention, the Bright Smiles, Bright Futures TM
community extends far and wide. Here’s how…
Australia and New Zealand: Launched in
1997, BSBF is endorsed by the Australian
Dental Association, New Zealand Dental
Association, Australian Dental and Oral
Health Therapist Association, Dental
Hygiene Association of Australia,
the New Zealand Dental Therapist
Association and the New Zealand Maori
Dental Association. Colgate provides BSBF
training to dental professionals working
with children and teachers. The combined
pre-school program and third grader program
have reached 5.34 million children since the
launch.
China: In the last 14 years, 111 million
children have been reached. BSBF is
endorsed by the Chinese
Stomatology Association (CSA)
and the National Education
Committee (NEC). Each year, BSBF
reaches over 450 cities and teaches
oral health care habits to over 6 million
first graders in more than 40,000 schools.
Bright Smiles, Bright Futures TM : A Partnership Approach
Malaysia: Today, the BSBF
program reaches 7,700 schools
and 630,000 first graders.
The program’s success is
made possible with the
support of the Ministry
of Education
and the
Ministry of
Health.
Pakistan: In 2002, the program
expanded to remote areas of
Pakistan. Lack of electricity in these
areas is no obstacle to spreading the
BSBF message, where flip charts and
other print materials are used. Since
its launch, the program has reached
over 2.9 million children. In 2009,
the global art contest received an
unprecedented 30,000 entries!
In the Schools
Reaching children in the schools is
a cornerstone of the Colgate effort.
Developed with an International
Advisory Board of educational, dental,
and multicultural experts, the awardwinning
BSBF education materials
are designed to be used by children
ages 5-10 years. There are a variety of
materials — from flip charts to videos,
storybooks and posters — so that
limited technology is not an obstacle
to spreading the message of BSBF.
In the Dental Office
Providing educational outreach materials to
children and their parents during the dental visit
is another important facet of Colgate’s global
commitment. With the goal of enhancing the
critical role dental professionals play in influencing
positive oral health behaviors among children
and their families, Colgate created a Professional
Resource Guide to help dental professionals utilize
the various educational materials in the dental
office and other settings.
Costa Rica: Since the BSBF education curriculum
launched 17 years ago, over 1.6 million 6 to 9 yearolds
have benefited from the oral health program.
Currently, 72% of all 9 year-olds in public schools
are benefiting from this program. The initiative is
endorsed by the Ministry of Education, the Ministry
of Health, the Costa Rican Pedodontics Academy
and the College of Dental Surgeons of Costa Rica.
The program now extends to dentists who, through
"Join Your School Community," are able to teach
students about oral health in their local community
schools.
Singapore: The BSBF program has
reached out to almost 150,000
children since its launch three years
ago. This initiative is supported by
the Health Promotion Board.
Venezuela: Since the program’s
inception 38 years ago, BSBF has
reached over 12 million children
and continues to teach nearly
700,000 children about oral health
every year.
My Bright Smile Art Contest
For the past 13 years, the My Bright Smile Global
Art Contest has invited children from classrooms all
over the world to create artwork that shows what
their own bright smiles mean to them. Country
winners receive scholarships for themselves and for
their schools. This year’s calendar features winners
from Australia, China, Costa Rica, Malaysia, New
Zealand, Pakistan, Singapore, United States
of America, and Venezuela.
There are four distinct seasons in
my city and we have various kinds
of plants and animals. The local
wild animals are Manchurian tigers
and pandas but I see rabbits and
dogs most often.
On my free time I love to read
Harry Potter and traditional Chinese
novels, surf the Internet, watch
movies and play table tennis. My
favorite music is rock and roll and,
when I go to middle school, I want
to learn how to play guitar.
A really cool fact about my
country is that we respect the old
and love the young. And, if I could
travel to one other country, it
would be Australia to experience
the beautiful scenery and lovely
koala bears.
I love to read and my favorite
authors are Enid Blyton and Roald
Dahl. I also love to paint and, when
I grow up, I want to be a painter or
maybe a teacher. I like traditional
music and play the piano, too.
My favorite season is summer
because I get to eat mangos and
watermelon, and have a lot of fun
on vacation! I would take a visitor
If someone my age came to visit, I
My family lives in an apartment in
Karachi, also known as the “City of
Lights.” It has big and beautiful
buildings. Here, the animals I see
most often are monkeys and parrots.
A really cool fact about my country
is that the second highest mountain
peak in the world, K2, is located
here!
My favorite subjects are math
and Urdu, the language I speak at
home, and my favorite music is
classical.
I love to play hide and seek, video
games, badminton (my favorite
sport) and piano. In my free time,
I also like to sketch and watch TV.
Protect your teeth with a mouthguard when you play sports.
If you do, your smile can last a lifetime!
November
Floss every day! If you are under 8 years of age, have a grown-up help you.
Flossing gets rid of food and plaque that brushing may miss.
I live in a house with my Mom,
Dad, two brothers and two sisters,
and we have lots of pets: two
dogs, one cat and eleven fish! We
speak Spanish and I am learning
English.
If a student from another
country came to visit my family,
I would offer them a tamal which
is made of corn, pork or chicken,
green peas, chili and rice, and is
wrapped into plantain leaves.
My favorite subject in school is
sports and I am on the soccer
team. After school, I love to ride
my bike with my friends, skate,
play with the scooter and play in
the park.
Malaysia is a society with many
different races and cultures. There
are five people in my family and we
speak Mandarin at home. I also
speak English and Malay.
I love to play table tennis, read
comics and draw. My favorite type
of music is pop.
The most beautiful and
interesting places in my country are
Kuala Lumpur (our capital city), the
Genting Highlands and Melaka. The
most beautiful place in my
neighborhood is the beach because
it is quiet, harmonious and nice. The
local animal I see most often is the
monkey.
If I could travel to one country, I
would go to Switzerland to see the
snow because I have never
experienced winter.
