He pauses, then says, “But not at the office. That’s like harassment
or some shit.”
RBBS played many other songs from various albums. “Comin’
Down” a jazzy, blues song from their 1996 self-titled debut album;
“Train”, a song from the 2002 New Ground album with
beautiful guitar melodies; and a very pretty, romantic song from
his new album, Still Lovin’ You, called “Virginia”.
All of the songs on the Blackwater Surprise playlist were standout
performances. Some songs turned into jam sessions when
Bradley briefly left the stage. Each member of the band is fantastically
gifted. Lead guitarist, Ruffino, played his guitar with a
violin bow for part of one of the songs.
Some songs also have some elements of spoken word poetry.
On the popular track, “Once Upon a Time,” Bradley reminisces
about high school and favorite musicians from yesteryear, such
as Otis Redding, Elvis Presley, Sam Cooke, and Marvin Gaye.
When Bradley performed this live, he also paid tribute to some
of the recent losses in music: Stevie Ray Vaughn, Johnny Cash,
and Barry White. This is a fitting tune because it’s easy to draw
comparisons between Robert Bradley and such greats as Otis
Redding and Marvin Gaye.
Another crowd favorite was “The Governor”. Bradley began this
fight-the-man tune a cappella, and with such feeling that you
could hear a pin drop in the room. In the chorus of the tune,
Bradley pleads, “I wish the governor would just leave me alone!
He’s breakin’ up my home!” He also did some ad-libbing here
and added, “I wish he would leave me alone if I want to smoke
marijuana, if I want to drive with the top down!” Then he yelled,
“Can I get a witness?”
Yes, Mr. Bradley… you can get a “Hallelujah” too! Amen.
