Lowrider culture originated in 1930s LA,
where it became popular for style-conscious
Latino-Americans to load their cars with
sandbags to lower them closer to the road.
When lowered cars were banned in the
1950s, it became necessary to find a way to
raise and lower cars to avoid traffic tickets
and impounds. The solution was to use
hydraulics from old WWII fighter planes.
The rapper Kid Frost showcased lowriding
in the early 90s hit song Lowrider, and since
then, the cars have been closely associated
with hip hop culture. Today, lowriding is
bigger than ever.
