Welcome to your fi rst issue of Colne Life, which joins the Estuary Life group of 

magazines - also covering Tiptree, Mersea and Maldon. We want to hear your 

views, so please get in touch with your thoughts, frustrations, observations, events 

and stories and of course, any suggestions for your new local community magazine. 

County Council round-up 

Cllr. Kevin Bentley is the County 

Councillor representing Rowhedge 

and Fingringhoe. He regularly 

attends Parish Council meetings 

and local events. Here he rounds 

up the latest news from County 

Hall that affects all residents.

Bad state of the roads 

I am very aware of the current 

conditions of many of the roads in 

our area and my I say thank you 

to everyone who has contacted 

me with concerns. I faithfully 

report all potholes and road 

damage that I am told about 

or I see myself while travelling 

around. As a result I met with the 

Cabinet Member for Highways 

recently to express my views. 

He fully understood the issues 

and explained that at this time 

of year we do see an increase 

in the number of potholes and 

even more this year due to the 

unprecedented amount of rain 

and ice we have experienced 

this winter. He also told me that 

because of the rain it is not 

possible to use the jet patcher to 

fi ll in the holes because you can’t 

put hot tarmac on top of water. 

Dangerous potholes have been 

fi lled in by hand which has taken a 

long time to do and makes it feel 

like that nothing is happening. He 

assures me that with drier weather 

work will be underway and we 

should all start to see the many 

potholes and defects fi xed. As 

ever, please do let me know if you 

see any problems on the roads 

and I will get them reported. 

The new Police and Crime 

Commissioner wants to 

talk to you! 

The newly elected Police and 

Crime Commissioner for Essex, 

Nick Alston is holding a series of 

public meetings around the county 

and is coming to Colchester. 

He wants to hear from people 

about their views on policing of 

our local areas and to hear your 

concerns. The event is being held 

Cllr. Kevin Bentley 

on Monday 15th April between 

4.30pm and 6.30pm in the Council 

Chamber at the Town Hall. You 

do not have to stay for the whole 

meeting and you can join it at 

any stage during these times.

Young People in your

Essex County Council is 

working with businesses to 

raise awareness of Government 

legislation – titled Raising of the 

Participation Age. The changes 

require young people, currently 

in Year 11, to remain in some 

form of education, training or a 

job with training from September 

2013 until July 2014. If you are 

a business that employs young 

people aged 16 and above, get in

as there are training solutions 

that will enable a young person to 

enhance their future and support

Fingringhoe 

Drama Group From Sally Jowers 

Each year in the February halfterm, 

the Fingringhoe Drama 

Group entertain their local 

communities with a Pantomime. 

This year the production was 

Rapunzel, which was welcomed 

with laughter and applause from 

each of the audiences. 

Rehearsals begin in 

September and we welcome 

members from 8 years old and 

especially adults. 

Our Annual General Meeting 

will be held at Fingringhoe 

Methodist Chapel on 

Wednesday May 1st at 7.30pm. 

All are welcome!

Catch Up Cafe 

Now open at Rowhedge 

Village Hall on the 2nd 

Thursday of the month from 

2pm to 4pm. 

A scheme that has been 

introduced by the Rural 

Community Council of Essex 

for village halls within rural 

villages in Essex is proving 

successful across the County. 

Meeting up with neighbours and 

friends and making new friends 

in villages where no facilities 

exist is bringing a purpose to life 

for lonely people to get out and 

have a friendly chat. 

There is also the added 

benefi t of Home Made Cakes 

(renowned in Rowhedge) by 

a team of cake makers. A 

selection of teas, coffee and 

cold drinks are also available. 

Our next Cafe` date is 11th 

April, followed by 9th May and 

13th June, everyone is welcome 

so please come along and try 

it, you never know you may 

even want to come back again.

Base Camp Climb 

Raising funds for Colchester Hospital Critical Care Unit 

Charlotte Wilkin, a resident of Rowhedge, has set herself the 

challenge of climbing to the base camp of Mount Everest, on the 

18th September in memory of her sister (pictured above), who 

passed away last November aged just 24. 

Charlotte wishes to increase the money raised so that she can give 

something back to the people who treated her sister. She says: 

“The level of care she 

received from Colchester 

Hospital Critical Care Unit 

was amazing and I now 

want to give something 

back to the staff by raising 

funds for the unit. I have set 

myself the ambitious target 

of £10,000 for this”.

Rowhedge Village Lunch

The Village Lunch is a regular 

social occasion, familiar to most 

Rowhedgians. It has a reputation 

for offering a light, inexpensive 

lunch in pleasant surroundings with 

an opportunity for a get-together 

with friends and neighbours. 

The lunch has been going for 

several years in our lovely Village 

Hall and is staffed by local 

volunteers. It happens on the 

third Tuesday of every month 

with the exceptions of August and 

December. 

The Village Lunch is open to 

all, you don’t have to live in the 

village to attend, children are also 

welcome. Diners in wheelchairs 

can also be accommodated. 

As you might imagine, an operation 

like the Village Lunch takes quite 

a team to get together. If you like 

the idea of serving your community, 

meeting people and working in 

cheerful company, you might like to 

give it a go. 

The group includes those who put 

up tables, lay them, serve them, 

clear them and then put them away 

again, and of course the most noble 

who do all the washing and drying 

up. Then there are the people who 

shop, the soup makers and those 

who prepare the green and potato 

salads. Also there are tea and 

coffee makers, the money takers 

(£3.00 a head) as well as those in 

charge of the raffl e and fl owers. 

Soups and salads are made in 

advance. The team arrive at the 

Hall at 12.15 pm and open up shop 

at 1.45 pm. All is peace and quiet 

again by 3.00 pm and no-one would 

know we had been there. 

We think it’s a very neat operation 

which gives pleasure to so many 

and is no great chore to us. If you

Rowhedge 

Farmers Market 

After a short break, the local Farmers & 

Crafts Market has restarted. We are open 

from the new time of 9.30am until 1pm. 

Hopefully this will catch the people who 

enjoy a lay in on a Saturday. We have also 

introduced Breakfast Rolls, with supplies 

from our Market Traders Primrose Pork, 

Willow Hall and Table Dainties. This proved to be a great success, 

so hopefully more of you will join us for breakfast. 

The majority of our regular stalls have joined us again, so you can 

buy all your favourites items plus we now offer a key cutting service 

from Kippers Keys - located outside the door on the car park side 

of the building. A quick reliable service that is very reasonably 

priced, so no need to get the bus or pay parking fees in town - you 

can get your keys cut in the village. Our selection of crafters has 

a regular following but additional extra stalls join us from time to 

time. Amongst the regulars are Angelina and her Arts, Colne Soaps, 

Phoenix Cards and Alaric Jewellery and some clothing. We have 

tried to make the market as interesting as possible and hope to run a 

small additional event alongside each market in the small hall. You 

will need to watch out for posters around the village promoting this.

Exhibition & Sale of 

Oriental and Contemporary 

Rugs & Carpets 

The Persian Carpet Studio will be exhibiting at the 

magnifi cent Layer Marney Tower, from Thursday 18 to 

Sunday 21st April. 

The Long Gallery will be transformed into a stunning showroom overfl owing 

with rugs of every size and colour, ranging from the traditional Persian 

designs to the increasingly popular soft muted colours of Ziegler rugs. 

This is a great opportunity to purchase a quality rug from their extensive 

collection of rugs, runners and room size carpets. Their team will be on 

hand to offer expert advice and you can even take the rug home to try 

before buying. 

On Thursday 18 April two exciting events are planned - ‘Restoration Day’ 

and ‘A Study Evening with Sara Barber’. During the Restoration Day highly 

skilled restorers will be demonstrating restoration techniques and offering 

advice on restoration, cleaning, aftercare and maintenance. Bring your rugs 

along for free valuations and quotations for any repairs. 

In the evening Sara Barber, the owner of the Persian Carpet Studio, will give 

an informative introduction to the art of Oriental rug making. With slides 

from her many trips, Sara will describe the making of a rug from ‘fl eece to fl oor’. Using rugs and weavings she will compare and contrast 

town, village and tribal rug design and production. Sara will also talk about her fascinating stay with the nomadic tribes-people of South 

West Iran, and provide a fascinating insight into this wonderful ancient way of life.

The pitfalls of 

using a Will 

Writing Service...

My colleagues and I have sadly lost count of the numerous times 

we have come across a Will that has been written by a Will 

Writing Service, and the Will is clearly not suitable for the client’s 

circumstances. I do not wish to tar the entire industry with the 

same brush however; I am astounded at the issues that I come 

across. 

A frequent, misconception is that to make a Will with a Solicitor is 

expensive. Recently I have been informed, by several clients, that 

they have paid up to £600 plus VAT to use a Will Writing Service. 

Not only is this expensive, more often than not the Wills are not 

tailored to the client’s particular needs. Adverts may proclaim 

‘£49 plus VAT for your Will’ however; rarely will this be the final 

price that you pay. 

More often than not a Will Writing Service will persuade you that 

your Will needs a Trust – this Trust miraculously saves you from 

paying care home fees. Trusts can be useful however; they 

should only be used in the correct circumstances. When Trusts 

are incorrectly placed into Wills, and the issue is only discovered 

upon the person’s death, then it can be time consuming and 

distressing to resolve. It can also be expensive to rectify. 

Will Writing Services are also not regulated. The people who 

draft your Will do not have the wider knowledge of law that a 

solicitor has therefore in some situations they do not have the 

ability to advise you properly. Solicitors are regulated by the 

Solicitors Regulation Authority. We have 

strict procedures that must be complied with, 

therefore, with a Solicitor you know you are 

in safe hands.

About Ed (Life Magazine’s resident character) 

We’re not sure how old Ed is but we 

reckon he’s in his early twenties. He 

came to us by chance, after moving 

to the area from Kent. With nowhere 

to live and no money, our designer 

took pity on him and allowed him 

to live amongst the pages of our 

magazines and in return, he must tidy 

the borders and margins and make 

sure they’re all aligned plus clear out 

the magazine after each month so 

that we can start again. 

A few years ago, on a trip to 

Colchester Zoo, Ed negotiated a 

Free family ticket with their marketing 

department and they told him “Yes, 

but your readers have to work for 

it because we can’t just GIVE you 

a ticket ”. And so…. ‘Find Ed’ was 

born. Not only does Ed now earn his 

keep looking after the magazine – he 

hides each month to earn a £50 zoo 

ticket for our readers too! 

Ed’s family members visit him now 

and again and also take up residence 

in the magazine – hiding to help with 

our competitions. His Mum Edina 

currently lives in Turkey (married a 

waiter half her age last year). She 

visits about twice a year and is a bit 

of a ‘Hyacinth Bucket’ (bouquet). A 

keen gardener and very critical and 

proper woman, with a penchant for 

squid and trouble with gout. 

His Dad ‘Ned’ doesn’t visit often at all. 

Bit of a loner and never found anyone 

else since losing Edina to a younger 

man. Ned lives in Rotherham with his 

dog ‘Spud’. Cousin Fred is a loveable 

rogue and a bit of a wanderer. We 

don’t know where he is now but he’ll 

turn up sooner or later, with some 

tale. We call him ‘Web Fred’, as he 

hides in our website when he stays. 

Bit of a techie – loves video games! 

We don’t really know where Ed’s love 

of hats comes from but he’ll never be 

seen without one! We even offered to 

sponsor him for Comic Relief, to see 

if we could persuade him out of his 

hat but no luck. He has never worn 

the same hat twice. EVER.

not allowed in adverts (we’d get into 

a lot of trouble with our advertisers if 

he did because all the others would

Just before Christmas Stacey Clout joined Rowhedge Heritage

Visiting a Chiropractor 

When you meet your chiropractor for the fi rst time, he/she will discuss 

your health and your reasons for asking for chiropractic care. Some 

questions may appear irrelevant, but they are extremely important 

to your chiropractor as we will need to establish your overall health 

picture. Your details are confi dential. 

Your chiropractor will examine you to confi rm any early ideas about 

your problem. Gowns are provided for the examination, which will 

concentrate on your neuromusculoskeletal system (nerves, muscles 

and joints). We may also check other things such as your heart, lungs 

and abdomen to rule out other causes. 

On-site x-ray is available, but if further information is needed from your 

GP (e.g. blood test results) treatment could be delayed by one or two 

days. Where appropriate, your chiropractor may refer you for an MRI/ 

CT scan. Any imaging will only be requested where clinically justifi ed. 

You will be told, in clear, simple language, what is wrong with you, what 

can be done about it and what you should expect when you receive 

your fi rst treatment. We will discuss any exercises, lifestyle changes or 

diet that may be benefi cial. Part of getting better is also up to you, so 

please follow any instructions and advice carefully and completely. 

You will also be advised of all costs that relate to your future care. It 

would be appropriate, at this point, for your chiropractor to tell you 

of any likelihood of a recurrence of your problem and the possible 

need for any ongoing supportive care. This is not an unusual situation 

for patients who have had serious injuries or those with a long-term 

problem due to wear and tear of the joints.

Crime Watch

In the morning of 17th February a male was seen 

hiding in the back garden of a property in Fingringhoe 

Rd, Langenhoe. The male ran off when seen by the 

occupants. No items were damaged or stolen but 

fence panels were removed to allow access into the 

garden. The male is described as wearing a navy 

quilted waist length coat with a large hood up and 

blue denim jeans. 

On 20th February a Dwelling burglary was reported 

in Haye Lane, Fingringhoe. Entry was gained via an 

insecure ground fl oor window. Items stolen include 

Jewellery and computer equipment. Enquiries are ongoing 

with offi cers from CID at Colchester Station. 

On 22nd February it was found that lead fl ashing had 

been stolen from a window at the Post Offi ce in Mersea. 

During the evening of the 27th February a male was 

reported canvassing in West Mersea for an internet 

supply company. He was stopped and checked by 

Police and was found to be working legitimately. 

On the 1st March an unknown male was seen offering 

to sell goods – jet washers and generators – from 

the back of a vehicle. The male and his vehicle were 

seen in Peldon and across Mersea Island.

Raspberries 

Raspberry canes are 

easy to grow, with 

only a small amount of 

maintenance required. 

All varieties benefi t from 

a mulching of well rotted 

manure in the spring. 

They need soil that 

does not become too 

waterlogged. Having said that, they do thrive in 

a climate that that is cool and damp, hence the 

wonderful fl avoured raspberries that we can buy 

in our supermarkets that are grown in Scotland. 

I freeze many pounds of raspberries each 

summer. They seem to be a little sour when 

defrosted but I always put them in a red jelly 

and this is all that is needed to make them very 

palatable, even to fussy grandchildren! 

For two seasons we have grown the Autumn 

fruiting cane called POLKA. Autumn fruiting 

does seem to have a lot more fl avour, but maybe 

it depends on the weather. We certainly had 

the required cool and damp climate last year. 

AUTUMN BLISS has been 

a favourite for a long time 

and is still available. I am 

going to mention pruning 

because Summer and 

Autumn types need quite 

different methods. 

Summer Fruiting 

These will fruit from beginning of 

July to end of August. Then you 

can immediately remove all the 

canes that have fruited that year, 

at the same time tying in the fresh

the end of August and beginning 

of October. 

Please use a moss killer on your 

lawn before trying to remove 

the moss. Raking it out will just 

spread it if it is still alive. Be 

patient it can take up to two

ingredients peak like 

soufflés, so make the 

most of them before 

they run out of puff. 

Days are longer, 

the sun should be 

shining - it’s the 

month to revel in 

watercress, sample 

spinach, love lettuce, 

and make the most 

of prawns, crab and 

purple sprouting 

broccoli. 

Zingy Stir-fry 

A vegetarian dish to blow the cobwebs away. 

Serves 2 generously - takes 20 minutes 

Ingredients 

2 tbsp vegetable oil 

2 garlic cloves, chopped 

1 red chilli, seeded and 

chopped 

1 level tsp fresh chopped 

ginger 

1 kilo purple sprouting 

broccoli, trimmed 

1 red onion, fi nely sliced 

Juice of 1 lime and 1/2 

its grated zest 

2 level tbsp soy sauce 

1 tsp runny honey 

Method 

1. Heat the oil in a wok 

and when hot, throw 

in the garlic, chilli and 

ginger. Fry, stirring for 

about 30 seconds before 

adding the broccoli and 

red onion. Stir and fry 

for another 30 seconds 

before adding the lime 

juice and zest. A minute 

or so later add the soy 

sauce and honey. 

2. Taste a piece of 

broccoli. Some like it 

really crunchy but keep 

going for another minute 

or so if you don’t feel 

Chilli Crab & Prawn Tarts 

Satisfying enough to serve as a main course or substantial snack. 

Makes 4 - takes 15 minutes to make, 30 minutes to bake, plus standing 

Ingredients 

375g pack ready-rolled shortcrust 

pastry, at room temperature 

25g butter 

Bunch of spring onions, trimmed and 

fi nely sliced 

1 large red chilli, deseeded and fi nely 

chopped 

250g raw, peeled medium prawns 

170g canned or fresh white crab meat 

200ml single cream 

3 large free-range egg yolks 

Bunch of fresh coriander, chopped 

Grated zest of 1 lime 

it’s done. This stir-fry is 

fantastic with seafood – 

a few scallops or prawns, 

or a couple of squid, 

cut into rings, would 

make great partners. 

Alternatively (and easier 

on your pocket), pop 

it on a plate next to a 

whole, grilled mackerel! 

Method 

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/fan160°C/ 

gas 4. Cut the pastry into 4 squares 

and use to line 4 x 10cm round x 2cm 

deep fl uted tart tins. Trim the excess 

pastry and prick the bases with a fork. 

Line each with baking paper and fi ll 

with baking beans or rice. Bake for 15 

minutes. 

2. Meanwhile, melt the butter in a frying 

pan and gently cook the spring onions 

and chilli for 2-3 minutes. Add the 

prawns and cook for 2 minutes, until 

pink. Remove from the heat and stir in 

the crab and some seasoning. 

3. Mix together the cream, egg yolks, 

coriander and lime zest in a jug. 

4. Remove the paper and beans from 

the pastry cases. Spoon in the crab 

mixture, then pour in the egg mixture. 

Bake for a further 15 minutes, until set 

but still with a slight wobble. Stand for 

10 minutes before serving.

carbs, 3.8g sugar, 2g salt
